Historic Alaska Highway, Alaska! (Tok)

…o dia estava com alguns indícios de chuva, mas já era normal, portanto, nada que nos fizesse tirar aquela vontade de aventura que sempre foi nossa orientação. Já chegámos ao Alaska!. Portanto, que mais vamos ver?. Estamos na povoação de Tok, que nos dizem que Tok encontra-se numa planície aluvial muito grande e plana, do Vale Tanana, entre o Rio Tanana e o Alaska Range, que é uma cordilheira de montanhas, numa importante junção da Estrada do Alasca (estrada do Alasca 2), com a Estrada Glen, (estrada do Alasca 1). (the day was with some signs of rain, but it was normal, therefore, nothing that would make us take away that desire for adventure that has always been our orientation. We’re already in Alaska! So, what else are we going to see ?. We are in the village of Tok, who tell us that Tok lies on a large, flat alluvial plain of the Tanana Valley, between the Tanana River and the Alaska Range at an importante junction of the Alaska Highway, (Alaska Route 2), with the Glen Highway, (Alaska Route 1).

…chegámos à povoação de Delta Junction. As placas de sinalização dizem-nos que chegámos ao fim do Historico Alaska Highway, contudo alguns dizem que a historica estrada só termina na povoação de Big Delta, outros até dizem que só termina na cidade de Fairbanks. Nós, entendemos que deve terminar na povoação de Big Delta, são mais umas milhas e, vamos em frente, até Big Delta!. Falando só um pouco de Delta Junction, a cidade está localizada a uma curta distância ao sul da confluência do rio Delta com o rio Tanana, que é um grande Delta. Os habitantes nativos são os Tanana Athabascans. A história inicial do assentamento não nativo na área, ocorreu no cruzamento do rio, em Big Delta, que hoje se chama à povoação de Big Delta, em 1904, Delta Junction, primeiro serviu como uma estação de telégrafo. Andámos por lá e tirámos fotografias no Marco Historico que assiná-la o fim da famosa estrada, visitámos o Centro de Visitas recebendo valiosa informação.

…ao lado do parque onde se encontra o Marco Historico do fim da famosa estrada, está o parque da “Sullivan Roadhouse”, que nos pareceu que as instalações do museu estavam em reparação, no entanto admirámos diversos veículos antigos, que foram utilizados na construção da famosa estrada!. (we reached the village of Delta Junction. The signposts tell us that we have reached the end of the Historic Alaska highway, yet some say that the historic road ends only in Big Delta village, others even say that it ends only in the city of Fairbanks. We, we understand that must end in the village of Big Delta, are over a few miles and, let’s go on, up to Big Delta!. Speaking just a little Delta junction, the city is located a short distance south of the confluence of the Delta River with the Tanana River, which is a Big Delta. Native inhabitants are Tanana Athabascans. The early history of non-native settlement in the area occurred at the river crossing at Big Delta and is found at the entry, Big Delta, and in 1904, the town first served as a telegraph station. We walked there and took photographs in the Historic Landmark that sign the end of the famous road, visited the Visitor Center receiving valuable information.Next to the park where the historical landmark of the end of the famous road lies, is the park of the “Sullivan Roadhouse”, which seemed to us that the museum facilities were under repair, however we admired several old vehicles, which were used in the construction of Famous road)!.

…chegámos a Big Delta Landing, onde pensamos que termina a famosa estrada. Parámos, tirámos algumas fotografias e, de agora em diante, já nos referimos a povoações, vilas ou cidades do Alaska.  Só voltaremos a falar da famosa estrada no regresso, que viajaremos só metade da estrada, pois mais ou menos ao meio, vamos para sul!. (we arrived at Big Delta Landing, where we thought the famous road ends. We stopped, took some photographs, and from now on, we are already referring to villages, towns or cities in Alaska. We will only talk about the famous road on the way back, we will travel only half the road, for about the middle, we will go south)!.

…passámos pela Eielson AFB, o som chamou-nos à atenção, vemos aviões na terra e no ar, e dissé-mos, olha aviões e, claro, pensando não fazer nada de mal, tiramos umas fotos! (we passed by the Eielson AFB, the sound caught our attention, we see airplanes on the ground and in the air, and we said, look at airplanes and, of course, thinking of doing nothing wrong, we took some photos)!.

Route 2 Alaska! (North Pole)

…mais uma vez parámos na povoação de North Pole, percorremos a rua principal e como costume fomos ao estabelecimento de vendas de artigos do Pai Natal!. É quase uma paragem obrigatória, pois quem viaja na estrada 2, em direcção ao norte, olhando à sua esquerda, vê uma figura gigante do Pai Natal, mas falando um pouco desta povoação, que já visitámos por várias vezes, vamos dizer-vos que North Pole faz parte da área estatística metropolitana de Fairbanks. Esta área estende-se entre Fort Wainwright e Eielson Air Force Base, e entre o rio Chena e o rio Tanana, a cidade é uma atração de verão para os turistas que visitam a cidade de Fairbanks e as suas proximidades. Enquanto o North Pole real, não tem terra firme, muitos viajantes descobriram esta cidade como uma maneira ideal de visitar a casa do Pai Natal, esta revelação fez com que esta pequena cidade no Alaska seja visitada, pelo menos durante as férias, fazendo com que a cidade criasse mais e mais atracções temáticas de Pais Natais. A sua maior atração é um estabelecimento de presentes denominado Casa do Pai Natal, que é a encarnação moderna de um posto comercial estabelecido na cidade. As ruas têm nomes temáticos de Natal,  que incluem, Rua do Pai Natal, St. Nicholas Drive, Snowman Lane ou Kris Kringle Drive, as luzes da rua na cidade estão decoradas com um motivos de Natal e, muitas empresas locais têm decorações semelhantes!. (once more we stopped in the village of North Pole, we walked the main street and as usual we went to the establishment of sales of articles of Santa Claus !. It is almost a must stop, since anyone traveling on Highway 2, heading north, looking to their left, sees a giant Santa Claus figure, but speaking a little of this town, which we have visited several times, we will tell you that North Pole is part of the Fairbanks metropolitan statistical area. This area stretches between Fort Wainwright and Eielson Air Force Base, and between the Chena River and the Tanana River, and the city is a summertime attraction for tourists visiting nearby Fairbanks. While the real North Pole has no terra firma many travelers discovered this town as an ideal way to finaly visit the home of Santa Claus, this revelation made this small town in Alaska a must visit during the holidays causing the town to created more and more Santa Claus themed attractions. Its biggest attraction is a gift shoop named Santa Claus House, the modern-day incarnation of a trading post established in the town’s early days. Christmas-themed streets in North Pole include santa Claus lane, St. Nicholas Drive, Snowman Lane and Kris Kringle Drive, and the street lights in the city are decorated in a candy cane motif, and many local businesses have similar decorations!.

…mais uma vez visitámos a cidade de Fairbanks, desta vez com mais tempo, andámos pela área do Centro de Visitas, apreciámos o cenário, lembrando-nos o que teria passado ao capitão E. T. Barnette que fundou Fairbanks em agosto de 1901, enquanto se dirigia para Tanacross (ou Tanana Crossing, onde a trilha de Valdez-Eagle atravessava o rio Tanana), onde pretendia montar um  posto comercial. O barco de vapor em que Barnette era um passageiro, o “Lavelle Young”, encalhou-se enquanto tentava navegar em águas rasas. Barnette, juntamente com a sua carga de suprimentos, foram depositados ao longo das margens do rio Chena, a 7 milhas (11 km) a montante da confluência com o rio Tanana. A visão da fumaça dos motores do navio, chamou a atenção de prostectores de ouro que trabalhavam nas colinas ao norte, mais notávelmente um imigrante italiano chamado Felice Pedroni (melhor conhecido como Felix Pedro) e o seu parceiro Tom Gilmore. Os dois encontraram-se com Barnette, onde desembarcou e o convenceram do potencial naquela área. Barnette estabeleceu o seu posto  comercial naquele local, ainda pretendendo acabar por chegar a Tanacross. Muitos prospectores de ouro, logo se reuniram ao redor daquele local, que hoje se chama  Fairbanks. Esses recém chegados, criaram minas, maquinaria para a pesquisa, procuraram ouro na terra, por vezes gelada, nos rios ou na lama, fundando assim a cidade de Fairbanks! (once again we visited the city of Fairbanks, this time with more time, we walked through the area of the Visitor Center, we enjoyed the scenery, reminding us what would have happened to the Captain E. T. Barnette founded Fairbanks in August 1901 while headed to Tanacross (or Tanana Crossing, where the Valdez-Eagle trail crossed the Tanana River), where he intended to set up a trading post. The steamboat on which Barnette was a passenger, the “Lavelle Young”, ran aground while attempting to negotiate shallow water. Barnette, along with his party and supplies, were deposited along the banks of the Chena River 7 miles (11 km) upstream from its confluence with the Tanana River. The sight of smoke from the steamer’s engines caught the attention of gold prospectors working in the hills to the north, most notably an Italian immigrant named Felice Pedroni (better know as Felix Pedro) and his partner Tom Gilmore. The two met Barnette where he disembarked and convinced him of the potential of the area. Barnette set up his trading post at the site, still intending to eventually make it to Tanacross. Teams of gold prospectors soon congregated in and around the newly founded Fairbanks, they build drift mines, dedges, and lode mines in addition to panning and sluicing)!.

…depois de visitar o Centro de Visitas, recebemos informação de alguns locais importantes para admirar na cidade e arredores e, foi o que fizemos, andando pela cidade visitando alguns locais! (after visiting the Visitor Center, we received information from some important places to admire in the city and its surroundings, and that is what we did, walking around the city visiting some places)!.

…o Pioneer Park está localizado ao longo do rio Chena e comemora a história do Alaska, no início, com vários museus e exposições de história, no local!. (The Pioneer Park is located along the Chena River, and commemorates early Alaskan history with multiple museums and history displays on site)!.

Fairbanks, Alaska! (Fox, 40th Anniversary Alyeska Pipeline)

…saindo de Fairbanks em direção a Fox, existe um parque chamado “The Trans Alaska Oil Pipeline”. Nós podemos caminhar até ao Pipeline, admirar a sua dimensão, ver partes do seu actual funcionamento, tocá-lo, ler informação, tirar fotografias e, talvez por sorte, era o dia da comemoração do 40 aniversário da sua existência, havia festa e exposição de equipamento usado na altura da sua construção!. (Heading out of Fairbanks towards Fox, there is a park called The Trans Alaska Oil Pipeline. We can walk to the Pipeline, admire its size, see parts of its current operation, touch it, read information, take photos and, luckily, it was the day of the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of its existence, there was a party and exhibition of equipment used at the time of its construction)!.

Fairbanks, Alaska! (returning to RV Park)

…foi um dia bastante divertido, regressámos ao RV Park, dormindo na nossa “White Fox”, pois pela manhã temos a intenção de concretizar a segunda experiência importante desta nossa viajem, que é viajar no célebre “Dalton Highway”!. (it was a very fun day, we returned to RV Park, sleeping on our “White Fox”, because in the morning we intend to realize the second important experience of our trip, which is traveling on the famous “Dalton Highway”)!.
