…pelo trajecto de hoje, já podem reparar que vamos em direcção ao sul e leste, portanto o nosso rumo é a nossa casa, no estado da Florida!. (by today’s route, you can already notice that we are heading south and east, so our course is our home in the state of Florida)!.

Highway 17, Arizona! (to south)

…como já explicámos anteriormente, “as cidades passam-se”, portanto passamos ao lado da cidade de Flagstaff, entrando no Highway 17, no sentido sul em direcção à cidade de Phoenix!. (as we have explained before, “cities are passing by,” so we passed the city of Flagstaff, entering Highway 17, heading south toward Phoenix)!.

…o Highway 17, tem algum cenário, mas a nossa atenção era viajar para sul e, a nossa “White Fox”, seguia sempre um pouco abaixo da velocidade permitida, mas com segurança!. (the Highway 17 has some scenery, but our attention was to travel south, and our “White Fox” always followed slightly below the allowed speed, but with safety)!.

…já próximo da cidade de Phoenix, começou a aparecer os célebres Cactus, era uma espécie a quem chamam Saguaro, que pode crescer até 70 pés de altura e pode viver por mais de 150 anos, a planta é nativa do Arizona e do deserto de Sonoran, que se estende para o México e, as flores aparecem, brancas e amarelas, em Abril até Junho, seguido de frutas no final de Junho!. (near the city of Phoenix, began to appear the celebrated Cactus, was the species that they call Saguaro, that can grow to 70 ft tall and may live for more than 150 years, the plant is native to Arizona and Sonoran Desert, which extends into Mexico, and flowers appear, white and yellow, in April through June, followed by fruit in late June)!.

…parámos na cidade de Phoenix, que está situada a 150 milhas (242 km) norte da fronteira US-Mexico na cidade de Sonoyta e, em torno da cidade, a topografia de Phoenix é geralmente plana, permitindo que o tráfico nas principais ruas e avenidas da cidade funcionem com precisão, pois são largas e com um espaço aberto!. Percorremos algumas ruas e avenidas na procura de comprar pão, pois foi esse o motivo que nos fez parar na cidade!. (we stop at the city of Phoenix, which is located 150 miles (242 km) north of the US-Mexico border at Sonoyta, and around the city, the topography of Phoenix is generally flat, allowing the city’s main streets to run on a grid-wide, open-spaced roadways!. We walked some streets and avenues in search of buying bread, because that was the reason that made us stop in the city)!.

…finalmente entrámos no Interstate 10, que nos havia de levar ao estado da Florida, pois é a estrada interestadual mais ao extremo sul do país, no sistema norte-americano de estradas interestadual. Começa no Oceano Pacifico, em Santa Monica, Califórnia, até ao Interstate 95, em Jacksonville, na Flórida!. E mais, as cidades populosas que o Interstate 10 conecta, desde o oeste até ao leste, são, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Tucson, El Paso, San Antonio, Houston, Baton Rouge, Nova Orleans e Jacksonville!. (we finally entered Interstate 10, which was to take us to the state of Florida, because is the southernmost cross-country interstate highway in the American Interstate Highway System. It streches from the Pcific Ocean, at State Route 1, in Santa Monica, California, to Interstate 95, in Jacksonville, Florida!. And more, the populous cities, that Interstate 10, connects to includes, from west to east, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Tucson, El Paso, San Antonio, Houston, Baton Rouge, New Orleans and Jacksonville)!

…passando pela cidade de Las Cruces, o cenário de montanha era lindo, nós, só diminuimos a velocidade da nossa “White Fox”, para admirar as montanhas!. (passing through the city of Las Cruces, the mountain scenery was beautiful, we only slowed down our “White Fox” to admire the mountains)!.

…a alguns anos, talvez duas décadas, passámos na cidade de El Paso, vindos da Califórnia, na companhia do nosso filho Sérgio, que regressava a casa, depois de cumprir o seu dever como militar, fazendo parte do Corpo de Marines, nesse tempo, também parámos em El Paso, mas a cidade era pequena, passava-se em pouco tempo, hoje, a cidade é grande, algumas secções do Highway estão em obras, pois a cidade continua a crescer!. (a few years, maybe two decades, they pass in the city of El Paso, coming from California, in the company of our son Sérgio, who returned home, after completing his duty as a soldier, being part of the Marine Corps, at that time, we also stopped at El Paso, but the city was small, it was soon, today, the city is big, some sections of the Highway are under construction, as the city continues to grow)!.

…procurámos, mas não encontrámos disponível nenhum parque de RV, por tal dormimos num hotel, mas o preço até era barato!. Obrigado!. (we searched, but found no RV park available, so we slept in a hotel, but the price was even cheap!. Thank you)!.

…fomos comer, num restaurante local, boa comida, mas não havia ninguém servindo, nem pratos, procurávamos o que queríamos, pagava-se e, num qualquer espaço, podiamos comer!. Havia um letreiro dizendo: “A tua mãe, não está aqui, por tal limpa o que sujares”!. (we went to eat in a local restaurant, good food, but there was no one serving, no dishes, we searched for what we wanted, paid for it and, in any space, we could eat!. There was a sign saying, “Your mother is not here, so clean what you  dirty”)!.

U.S. Route 89, Utah!

…hoje percorremos mais ou menos 580 milhas, quase sempre viajando num cenário de montanha, planície e alguma água!. Viajamos, no cénico Highway 89, faz parte do “Utah Heritage Highway 89”, esta estrada passa pela área  ocidental de Bryce Canyon Country, de norte a sul. Esta área por onde passa o “Utah Heritage Highway 89”, é uma aventura, através de uma beleza cénica, que representa uma história viva!. (today we travel more or less 580 miles, almost always traveling in a mountain scenery, plain and some water!. We traveled, on the Scenic Highway 89, is part of the Utah Heritage Highway 89, this road passed through the western section of Bryce Canyon Country from north to south. This section of the Utah Heritage Highway 89 is an adventure through scenic beauty and living history)! .

…saindo de um cenário de rio e montanha, entrámos de novo no U.S. Route 89, no sentido sul, que por aqui chamam também de “Utah Heritage Highway 89”!. …estendendo-se por mais de 500 milhas, desde o estado do Idaho até ao Arizona, o Highway 89, leva-nos através do coração de uma cultura, arquitectura, história e cenários únicos!. (extending 500 miles from Idaho to Arizona, Highway 89, brings you through the heart of unique culture, architecture, history, and scenery)!.

…a comunidade de Panguitch, Utah, faz parte do que é conhecido como a área da “Headwaters da National Mormon Pioneer Heritage Area”!. (the community of Panguitch, Utah, are part of what is known as the Headwaters section of the National Mormon Pioneer Heritage Area)!. 

…toda a comunidade de Panguitch está mencionada como um Distrito Histórico Nacional, por causa de muitos edifícios de tijolos originais e restaurados, alguns que remontam às origens da comunidade, na década de 1860!. (the entire community of Panguitch is listed as a National Historic District, because of the many original and restored brick buildings some dating back to the community’s origins in the 1860’s)!.

…é uma boa oportunidade para comer o pequeno almoço!. (is a good opportunity to eat breakfast)!.

….à comunidade de Panguitch, chamam-lhe de “The Center of Scenic Utah” e, é um ótimo ponto central para conhecer lugares como, o Red Canyon, que fica a cerca de uma milha da interseção do Highway 89 e da Scenic Byway 12, Bryce Canyon, Kodachrome Basin State Park, Cedar Breaks National Monument, e muito mais!. (is nicknamed “The Center of Scenic Utah”, and is a great central point to experience places such as Red Canyon, which is just about a mile from the intersection of Highway 89 and Scenic Byway 12, Bryce Canyon,  Kodachrome Basin State Park,Cedar Breaks National Monument, and more!.

…seguindo de oeste a leste por 122 milhas (quase 200 km), a estrada fica a sul de Panguitch, numa intersecção com a U.S. Route 89, atravessa uma parte do Dixie National Forest e o Parque Nacional Bryce Canyon, continua pelas pequenas cidades, montanhas, rios e parques nacionais!.(proceeding west to east for 122 miles (nearly 200 km), the highway sterts south of Panguitch at an intersection with US-89, crosses part Dixie National forest and Bryce Canyon National Park, continues through the small towns, mountains, rivers  and National Parks!.

…esta é State Route 12, ou Scenic Byway 12, também conhecida como “Highway 12-A Journey Trough Time Scenic Byway”, é uma estrada estadual designada como “All-American Road”!. This is State Route 12, or Scenic Byway 12, also known as “Highway 12-A Journey Trough Time Scenic Byway”, is a state highway designated an “All-American Road”)!.

…a Floresta Nacional Dixie, ocupa quase dois milhões de acres (8.000 km2) e estende-se por cerca de 170 milhas (270 km) em todo o sul de Utah. (Dixie National Forest, is it occupies almost two million acres (8,000 km2) and stretches for about 170 miles (270 km) across southern Utah)!.

…os pinheiros ponderosa cercam as “hoodoos” (são grandes colunas naturais em forma cónica que sustêm no seu topo um bloco de rocha maior, que funciona como protector da erosão até que, com o continuar da erosão, não seja mais possível sustentar esse bloco) de arenito vermelho, que povoam o Red Canyon em abundância, pois Red Canyon certamente não é tão famoso quanto as lendas do “Wild West” (Oeste Selvagem), da área, como Butch Cassidy, pois os seus crimes infames são bem conhecidos em toda a área, e a sua casa de infância era uma cabine próxima, em Circleville. A sabedoria do “Wild West”, fala de um momento em que o velho Butch entrou numa zaragata, numa dança de cidade, em Panguitch, por causa de uma moça, jovem e bonita. Acreditando que matou um homem com um duro golpe, Cassidy fugiu para as montanhas vermelhas do deserto, hoje conhecido como Red Canyon. O homem a quem ele bateu, viveu, mas um grupo perigoso de homens desejosos de matá-lo, foram mandados para encontrá-lo. Butch conseguiu escapar, escondendo-se ao longo da estrada acidentada que agora é famosa como a Cassid Trail. A história deixou o Red Canyon com uma sombra do infame proscrito do “Wild West”, e os habitantes da área não são rápidos em esquecer!. (ponderosa pines surround the red sandstone hoodoos populating Red Canyon in abundance, because Red Canyon is certainly not as famous as the area’s Wild West legends, like Butch Cassidy, but his infamous crimes are well known throughout the area, and his childhood home was a cabin nearby, in Circleville. Western lore tells of a time when old Butch got into a scuffle at a town dance in Panguitch over a girl. Believing he killed the man from a hard blow, Cassidy fled to the craggy sweep of desert, today known as Red Canyon. The man he hit lived, but a dangerous gang of handlers were dispatched to find him. Butch managed to elude the posse by hiding out along the rugged road that is now famoudly known as the Cassid Trail. The story has left Red Canyon with a shadown of the infamous western outlaw, and the area’s locals aren’t quick to forget it)!.

…Bryce Canyon City está localizada a cerca de 20 milhas (32 km) a leste de Panguitch, apenas fora da entrada do parque, no canto noroeste do Parque Nacional Bryce Canyon!. (Bryce Canyon City is located some 20 miles (32 km) east of Panguitch, just outside the park entrance at northwest corner of Bryce Canyon National Park)!.

…tanto nós, como todos os que chegam pela primeira vez, junto à ravinas vermelhas do Bryce Canyon National Park, a primeira expressão, logo, a seguir à admiração do cenário é: “Oooohhhh, como é possível isto existir”!. (we, as well as all of us who arrive for the first time, near the red gullies of Bryce Canyon National Park, the first expression, then, following the admiration of the scenery is: “Oooohhhh, how can this exist)!.

…Bryce Canyon, que apesar do seu nome, não é uma ravina, mas uma colecção de anfiteatros naturais gigantes ao longo do lado leste do planalto de Paunsaugunt. Bryce, é distintivo devido a estruturas geológicas chamadas “hoodoos”, (já explicámos o significado desta palavra) formadas por erosão atmosférica e erosão das rochas sedimentares do rio e do lago. As cores vermelhas, alaranjadas e brancas das rochas oferecem vistas espectaculares para os visitantes do parque!.(Bryce Canyon, which despite its name, is not a canyon, but a collection of giant natural amphitheaters along the eastern side of the Paunsaugunt Plateau. Bryce, is distinctive due to geological structures called “hoodoos”, (they are large, conical shaped natural columns that support a larger block of rock on the top, which acts as a shield for erosion until, as erosion continues, it is no longer possible to sustain this block), formed by frost weathering and stream erosion of the river and lake bed sedimentary rocks. The red, orange, and white colors of the rocks provide spectacular views for park visitors)!. 

 

…pouco se sabe sobre a habitação humana precoce na área de Bryce Canyon, levantamentos arqueológicos do Parque Nacional Bryce Canyon e do Planalto de Paunsaugunt mostram que as pessoas estiveram na área, há pelo menos 10.000 anos, os artefatos de Basketmaker Anasazi de vários milhares de anos, foram encontrado ao sul do parque. Outros artefactos do Anasazi, do período Pueblo e da Cultura Fremont, também foram encontrados!. (little is know about early human habitation in the Bryce Canyon area, archaeological surveys of Bryce Canyon National Park and the Paunsaugunt Plateau show that people have been in the area for at least 10,000 years, Basketmaker Anasazi artifacts several thousand years old have been found south of the park. Other artifacts from the Pueblo-period Anasazi and the Fremont Culture have also been found)!.

…viajando algumas milhas para leste, na estrada 12, encontramos a “Mossy Cave e Waterfall”. Estão localizados fora do Bryce Canyon National Park, onde podemos caminhar através desta trilha, que faz parte do parque, e é mantida pelos serviços do parque. A trilha é muito curta, o sinal diz 0,4 milhas para a caverna, sendo assim, são 0,8 ida e volta e, há dois excelentes retornos ao longo do caminho, que são, uma queda de água e uma Caverna Mossy!. (traveling a few miles east on Highway 12, we found the Mossy Cave and Waterfall. Is located outside of Bryce Canyon National Park. Through this trail is part of the park maintained by the Park Service. The trail is very short, the sign says 0.4 miles to the cave, so 0.8 roundtrip, and there are two great payoffs along the way, a Waterfall, and Mossy Cave!.

…regressámos à cidade de Panguitch, ao cruzamento da U.S. Route 89, admirando de novo todo o cenário que observámos na viagem de ida! (we returned to the town of Panguitch, at the intersection of U.S. Route 89, admiring once again the whole scenary we observed on the outward journey)!.

…parámos em Mount Carmel Junction, para comprar gasolina, água, café e pão, comprámos tudo menos pão!. Mount Carmel Junction, situa-se na junção da U.S. Route 89 e da Route 9 do estado do Utah!. (we stopped at Mount Carmel Junction, to buy gas, water, coffee and bread, we bought everything but bread!. Mount Carmel Junction sits at the junction of U.S. Route 89 and State Route 9 in southwern Utah!.

U.S. Route 89, Utah! (Moqui Cave)

…a Caverna Moqui, é uma caverna de erosão de arenito, no sul de Utah. Está localizada a cerca de 5 milhas (8,0 km) ao norte de Kanab, ao longo da estrada 89 e, o nome vem do Moqui, que alguns arqueólogos acreditam ser uma antiga tribo na área de Anasazi-Hopi, num período de tempo desconhecido. A caverna Moqui já foi usada por pessoas Anasazi, como abrigo ou loja de alimentos, de acordo com as escavações arqueológicas na área!.  Nós paramos aqui, apreciámos o cenário, mas não entrámos, pois vendiam bilhetes de entrada e, o tempo e o dinheiro, eram poucos!. (Moqui cave is a sandstone erosion cave in southern Utah. It is located roughly 5 miles (8.0 km) north of Kanab, along U.S. Route 89, and the name comes from the Moqui, which some archaeologists believe to be an ancient tribe in the Anasazi-Hopi area at an unknown time period. Moqui Cave was once used by Anasazi people as a shelter or food store, according to archaeological digs in the area!. We stopped here, enjoyed the scenery, but did not go in because they sold entrance tickets, and time and money were few)!.

…mais uma vez passamos no Kanab, que está situado na área do “Grande Círculo”, localizado centralmente entre o Monumento Nacional Vermilion Cliffs, o Parque Nacional Bryce Canyon, o Grand Canyon, o Parque Nacional Zion e o Lago Powel. Outras atrações próximas incluem o Monumento Nacional Grand Staircase-Escalante Nacional, o Parque Estadual das Dunas de Areia de Coral e o maior santuário de animais nos EUA. Os locais referem-se a Kanab, como “Little Holywood”, devido à sua história como um local de filmagem para muitos filmes e séries de televisão, proeminentemente “Westerns”!. (once again we passed in Kanab, which is situated in the “Grand Circle” area, centrally located among Vermilion Cliffs National Monument, Bryce Canyon National Park, the Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, and Lake Powel. Other nearby attractions include Grand Staircase-Escalante Nacional Monument, Coral Pink sand Dunes State Park, and the largest animal sanctuary in the USA. The locals refer to Kanab as “Little Holywood”, due to its history as a filming location for many movies and television series, prominently “Westerns”!).

…passando pelo Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, o cenário era único, calor, muito calor, alguma paisagem mostrava uma pequena névoa, rente ao solo, que devia de ser o reflexo da temperatura quente! (passing through the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, the scenery was unique, warm, very hot, some landscape showed a small mist, close to the ground, which must have been a reflection of the hot weather)!

…a Área de Recreação Nacional de Glen Canyon, é uma unidade de recreação e conservação do Serviço de Parques Nacionais, que engloba a área ao redor do Lago Powell e da baixa Catarata Canyon, em Utah e no Arizona, cobrindo 1.254.429 acres (5.076 km2) de área de deserto, principalmente!. (the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, is a recreation and conservation unit of the National Park Service, that encompasses the area around Lake Powell and lower Cataract Canyon in Utah and Arizona, covering 1,254,429 acres (5,076 km2) of mostly desert)!.

 

… como tal, a área foi desenvolvida para acesso ao Lago Powell, através de 5 marinas!. (as such, the area has been developed for access to Lake Powell via 5 marinas)!.

…a área de recreação, faz fronteira com o Parque Nacional Capitol Reef e o Parque Nacional Canyonlands no norte, o Monumento Nacional Grand Staircase-Escalante no oeste, o Monumento Nacional Vermilion Cliffs e os confins do nordeste do Parque Nacional do Grand Canyon no sudoeste e, o Navajo Reserva Indiana no sudeste! (the recreation area borders Capitol Reef national Park, and Canyonlands National Park on the north, Grand Staircase-Escalante national Monument on the west, Vermilion Cliffs National Monument and the northeasternmost reaches of Grand Canyon National Park on the southwest, and the Navajo Indian Reservation on the southeast)!.

 

 

…o atual Lago Powell está acima do Glen Canyon, que foi inundado pela represa Glen Canyon!. (the current Lake Powell lies above Glen Canyon, which was flooded by the Glen Canyon Dam)!.

…quando chegámos a esta barragem, a temperatura era alta, deixámos cair no chão, as chaves da nossa “White Fox” e, ao apanhá-las, escaldámos as mãos!. No entanto valeu a pena, pois é uma obra gigante, à qual tirámos algumas fotos, pois a Glen Canyon Dam, é uma barragem de gravilha de arco, em concreto, no Rio Colorado, no norte do Arizona, perto da cidade de Page. A barragem, tem 710 pés de altura (220 m) foi construída de 1956 a 1966 e, forma o Lago Powell, um dos maiores reservatórios artificiais nos EUA, com uma capacidade de 27 milhões de pés quadrados. A barragem levou o seu nome para Glen Canyon, uma série de desfiladeiros de arenito profundo, agora inundados pelo reservatório!. (when we arrived at this dam, the temperature was high, we dropped the keys of our “White Fox” on the floor and when we picked them, we scalded our hands! However it was worth it, because it is a giant work, to which we have some photos, since the Glen Canyon Dam, is a concrete arch-gravity dam on the Colorado River in northern Arizona, near the town of page. The 710-foot (220 m) high dam was built from 1956 to 1966 and forms lake Powell, one of the largest man-made reservoirs in the U.S. with a capacity of 27 million acre feet . The dam is named for Glen Canyon, a series of deep sandstone gorges now flooded by the reservoir)!.

...quando ainda crianças, vimos uma cena, no salão de espectáculos da vila onde nascemos, em Portugal, era uma película onde entrava o actor John Wayne, cujo cenário, era passado no local, nas rochas do “Horseshoe Bend”, ficou-nos no pensamento, aquele rio, dando a volta lá em baixo!. Uff, tanta emoção, que sentimos agora, ao pisar este local!. Não é fácil, ir lá, ao local, temos de caminhar mais ou menos 1,5 milhas, com o percurso de ida e volta, desde a estrada 89. Podemos ver todo o tipo de pessoas, que querem vistar o local, desde  caminhantes bem preparados, até aqueles “flip flop”, com  sapatos de ir às festas! Não fique desanimado pela multidão, porque ficar no limite do penhasco, ver aquela  vista, vale bem o curto momento de sacrifício, de uma caminhada forçada. A trilha começa no final do parque de estacionamento, com um sinal avisando os caminhantes para ter cuidado, e lembrando de que não há trilhos com segurança, na borda do penhasco!. Tudo começa  com uma caminhada gradual, por uma pequena colina, depois, boa sorte!. (when we were still children, we see a scene, in the hall of shows of the village where we were born, in Portugal, it was a film where the actor John Wayne, whose scene, was passed in the place, in the rocks of the “Horseshoe Bend”, stayed us in the thought, that river, going around down there !. Uff, so much emotion, that we feel now, when stepping on this site!. It is not easy to go there, to the place, we have to walk about 1.5 miles, round trip from U.S. Route 89, you’ll see every type of people visiting, from well prepared hikers to flip flop and wedge shoes wearing folks. Don’t be discouraged by the crowd, to stand at the edge of the cliff and see the view is well worth the short moment of sacrifice of a solitude hike. The trail starts at the end of the parking lot by a sign warning hikers to be careful and a reminder that there are no rails at the edge of the cliff!. Begin with a gradual walk up a small hill, then, good luck)!.

…no cimo da colina, existem alguns bancos espalhados e um pequeno cabanal, se por acaso precisar-mos de um abrigo rápido, do sol, ou de uma forte chuvada do deserto!. A partir daqui, a trilha começa a descer, oferecendo vistas aos visitantes, que rolam pela borda dos penhascos. Qual o melhor ponto para a vista?. Todos os locais são bons!. Encontramos um local e, tiramos a foto, e se possível, repetimos!. Cada ponto que escolhemos, vai render uma boa foto!. O Rio Colorado, que flui e esculpiu, lá no fundo, esta forma de ferradura de 270 graus, fez este cenário bonito e incrível, para nós hoje, fotografar-mos quanto possível, pois as paredes de rocha de Horseshoe Bend contêm uma variedade de minerais, tais como, hematita, platina e granada!. (at the top of the hill, there are some benches spread out and a small hut, if by chance we need a quick shelter, the sun, or a heavy desert rain! From here, the trail begins to descend, offering views of the visitors, who roll by the edge of the cliffs. What is the best point for the view? All the sites are good!. We found a place and, we took the photo, and if possible, we repeat!. Every point we choose, will yield a good picture!. The Colorado River, which I went to and sculpted in the background, this horseshoe shape of 270 degrees, made this scenery beautiful and incredible, for us today, to photograph as much as possible, because the rock walls of Horseshoe Bend contain a variety of minerals, among which are hematite, platinum and garnet)!.

…o regresso ao parque de estacionamento, foi mais difícil, faltou-nos alguma força nas pernas e, já não havia água fresca, pois a que levámos acabou-se! (the return to the parking lot, it was more difficult, we lacked some strength in the legs and there was no fresh water, because the one we took is over)!.

Highway 84, Idaho! (Twin Falls/Jerome, RV Park)

…pela manhã, o sol a despertar, deixámos o RV Park. Antes de ir para a estrada, comprámos gas, que estava a um preço razoável, água e café. A água era cara, mas a pessoa que estava a vender, diz-nos, com aquele gesto na cara, que caracteriza as pessoas ocupadas, “se querem comprar, comprem, se não querem não comprem”!. Nós comprámos, pois precisávamos!. (in the morning, the sun waking, we left RV Park. Before we hit the road, we bought gas, which was reasonably priced, water and coffee. The water was expensive, but the person who was selling it tells us, with that gesture in the face, that characterizes the busy people, “if they want to buy, buy, if they do not want to not buy!”. We bought it because we needed it)!.

…entrámos na estrada estadual 108, que dá acesso ao Antelope Drive, que nos leva ao “causeway”, que é nem mais nem menos do que o “Antelope Island Road”, que esse sim, nos leva à Ilha de Antelope, que queríamos visitar! (we entered State Highway 108, which gives access to Antelope Drive, which takes us to the “Causeway”, which is neither more nor less than the “Antelope Island Road”, which does lead us to Antelope Island, which we wanted to visit !.

…o contador da nossa “White Fox”, mostra aproximadamente mais 7 milhas no final deste “causeway”, que percorremos, parando aqui e ali, apreciando, tanto de um lado como do outro, sal, água, pássaros penicando no sal e na água, com alguma vegetação seca. No horizonte, pareceu-nos que existia algum nevoeiro junto da água!. (the counter of our “White Fox”, shows approximately 7 more miles at the end of this “causeway”, that we traveled, stopping here and there, enjoying, on one side and the other, salt, water, birds pining in salt and in the water, with some dry vegetation. Antelope Island Road, Utah! (Memorial)

… doze homens morreram no dia 29 de Outubro de 1992, quando  um helicóptero da Força Aérea MH-60G Pave Hawk, voando sem luzes, com baixa cobertura de nuvens e pouca visibilidade, chegou muito perto da água e caiu, apenas a 100 metros do nordeste canto da ilha. Tivemos um momento meditação em memória destes homens, com muito respeito!. (twelve men died on Oct. 29, 1992, when their Air Force MH-60G Pave Hawk helicopter, flying without lights, in low cloud cover and little visibility, got too close to the water and crashed just 100 yards off the northeast corner of the island. We had a meditation moment in memory of these men, with much respect)!.

…a Ilha do Antílope, com uma área de 42 quilómetros quadrados (109 km2), é a maior das 10 ilhas localizadas no lago Great Salt, no Utah. A ilha fica na parte sudeste do lago, perto de Salt Lake City e Davis County, e torna-se numa península quando o lago está com níveis extremamente baixos! (Antelope Island, with an area of 42 square miles (109 km2), is the largest of 10 islands located within the Great Salt lake, utah. The island lies in the southeastern portion of the lake, near Salt Lake City and Davis County, and becomes a peninsula when the lake is at extremely low levels)!

…os primeiros conhecidos não-nativos a visitar a ilha foram, John C. Fremont e Kit Carson, durante a exploração do Great Salt Lake, em 1845, que “montaram a cavalo sobre o sal da espessura de uma água para doze polegadas” e ” foram informados pelos índios que havia uma abundância de água fresca e abundância de antílopes”. Diz-se que eles atiraram num  antílope “pronghorn” na ilha, e foi em gratidão pela carne, que eles chamaram a Ilha Antílope!. (the first know non-natives to visit the island were John C. (Antelope Island has natural scenic beauty and holds populations of pronghorn, bighorn sheep, American bison, porcupine, badger, coyote, bobcat, and millions of waterfowl. The bison were introduced to the island in 1893, and Antelope island Bison Herd has proven to be a valuable genetic pool for bison breeding and conservation purposes)!.

…entrando de novo no Highway 15, no sentido sul, começando a ver a cidade de Salt Lake City, com destaque para o Capitol, decidimos visitar a cidade!. (entering Highway 15, heading south, starting to see the city of Salt Lake City, highlighting the Capitol, we decided to visit the city)!.

…estávamos cerca do Utah State Capitol, é o edifício principal do Complexo do Capitólio Estadual de Utah, que está localizado no Capitólio, com vista para o centro de Salt Lake City! O arquitecto do Capitólio foi inspirado pela arquitetura clássica e, alguns jornais locais compararam os primeiros projetos com o Parthenon da Grécia!. (we were near the Utah State Capitol, is the main building of the Utah State capitol Complex, which is located on Capitol Hill, overlooking downtown Salt Lake City! The capitol’s architect was inspired by Classical architecture, and some local newspapers compared the early designs to Greece’s Parthenon)!.

… dirigindo-nos para a parte baixa da cidade, que em outros tempos começou o seu desenvolvimento com a imigração dos membros internacionais da Igreja de Jesus Cristo dos Santos dos Últimos Dias, a chegada em grande escala, de mineiros  procurando metais preciosos e a construção do primeiro Caminho de Ferro Transcontinental, levaram inicialmente o crescimento económico, e a cidade foi apelidada de “Cruzamento de Estradas do Ocidente”! Foi atravessada pela estrada de Lincoln, a primeira Estrada Transcontinental, em 1913, e actualmente duas grandes auto-estradas, I-15 e I-80, cruzam-se na cidade!. (directing us to the lower part of the city, which in other times began to develop with the Immigration of international The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints members, mining booms, and the construction of the first transcontinental railroad initially brought economic growth, and the city was nicknamed the “Crossroads” of the West!. …parando na área do Templo Square, a nossa esposa Isaura, foi lá dentro, apreciar a área e tirar algumas fotos, enquanto nós, ficámos na “White Fox”, pois não havia local para estacionar, no entanto podemos dizer que a  Praça do Templo é um complexo de 10 hectares (4,0 ha), de propriedade da Igreja de Jesus Cristo dos Santos dos Últimos Dias, no centro de Salt Lake City. Nos últimos anos, o uso do nome mudou gradualmente para incluir várias outras instalações da igreja que são imediatamente adjacentes à Praça do Templo, como por exemplo o Salt Lake Tabernacle e outros edifícios, assim como diversas estátuas e lindos jardins!. (stopping in the Temple Square area, our wife Isaura, went in there, enjoying the area and taking some photos, while we stayed in the “White Fox” as there was no place to park, however we can say that Temple Square is a 10-acre (4.0 ha) complex, owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in the center of Salt Lake City. In recent years, the usage of the name has gradually changed to include several other church facilities that are immediately adjacent to Temple Square, such as the Salt Lake Tabernacle and other buildings, as well as several statues and beautiful gardens)!.

…em 1847, quando os pioneiros Mórmons chegaram ao Vale do Lago Salgado, selecionaram o terreno do deserto e proclamaram: “Aqui vamos construir um templo para o nosso Deus”!. (in 1847, when Mormon pioneers arrived in the Salt Lake Valley, selected plot of the desert ground and proclaimed, “Here we will build a temple to our God”)!.

…Salt Lake City, desenvolveu uma forte indústria de turismo recreativo ao ar livre, baseada principalmente no esqui, e hospedou os Jogos Olímpicos de Inverno de 2002!. (Salt lake City has since developed a strong outdoor recreation tourist industry based primarily on skiing, and hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics)!.

… devido à sua proximidade com o lago Great Salt, a cidade foi originalmente chamada “Great Salt Lake City”, no entanto, a palavra “Great” foi retirada do nome oficial em 1868 pela 17a Legislatura Territorial de Utah!. (due to its proximity to the Great Salt Lake, the city was originally named “Great Salt Lake City”, however, the word “Great” was dropped from the official name in 1868 by the 17th Utah Territorial Legislature!.

 

…pelo menos pela área que percorremos da cidade, quase tudo tem referencia à religião Mormon, e lembramos  Brigham Young e outros seguidores, que procuravam escapar da perseguição religiosa, encontraram um vale árido e inóspito que então irrigaram e cultivaram extensivamente, estabelecendo assim a base para sustentar a sua grande população de hoje!. (at least for the area we are in the city, almost everything has reference to the Mormon religion, and we remember the Brigham Young, and other followers who were seeking to escape religious persecution, they encountered an arid, inhospitable valley that they then extensively irrigated and cultivated, thereby establishing the foundation to sustain its large population of today)!.

U.S. Route 161, Utah! (Cove Fort)

…há anos que desejamos ver este forte, agora surgiu a oprtunidade!. (for years we have wished to see this strong, now the opportunity arose)!.

…Cove Fort, é um lugar mais conhecido para o terminal ocidental da I-70, resultando em Cove Fort, sendo mencionado como um  clugar de controle, em sinais de auto-estradas, embora o forte seja histórico e, não tenha população permanente!. (Cove Fort is the closest named place to the western terminus of I-70, resulting on Cove Fort being listed as a control city on freeway signs, though the fort is historical and has no permanente population!.

… o lugar de Cove Fort, foi selecionado por Brigham Young, por causa da sua localização a meio caminho entre Fillmore, depois a capital do Território de Utah, e a cidade mais próxima, Beaver!. (the site for Cove Fort was selected by Brigham Young because of its location about halfway between Fillmore, then the capital of the Utah Territory, and the nearest city, Beaver)!.

…. proporcionou uma estação de caminho, para pessoas que viajavam pelo Corredor Mórmon. O forte é quadrado, com um comprimento de 100 pés (30 m) de cada lado, as paredes são construídas em pedra vulcânica preta e calcário escuro, ambas extraídas das montanhas próximas e, contém 12 salas interiores!. (it provided a way station for people traveling the Mormon Corridor. The fort is a squqre, 100 ft (30 m) on each side, the walls are constructed of black volcanic rock and dark limestone, both quarried from the nearby mountains, and contains 12 interior rooms)!.

…como uma paragem diária para duas linhas de diligências, bem como muitos outros viajantes, Cove Fort foi fortemente usado por muitos anos, muitas vezes habitando e alimentando até 75 pessoas por dia. Além de dar um lugar para descansar, um ferreiro/agricultor residia no forte, que calçava cavalos e bois e também reparava rodas de carroças e diligências. Também tinha um escritório de telégrafo e era uma paragem do Pony Express!. (as a daily stop for two stagecoah lines, as well as many other travelers, Cove Fort was heavily used for many years, often housing and feeding up to 75 people at a time. In addition to proding a place to rest, a blacksmith/farrier resided at the fort, who shod horses and oxen, and also repaired wagon wheels. With its telegraph office and as a Pony Express stop)!.

…companheiros de jornada, ainda andam por aí?. Ainda nos seguem?. Que paciência!. Bem, esperamos que viajem connosco, que apreciem o cenário, tanto ou mais que nós, pois já andamos há semanas fora de casa, longe do nosso quintal, do nosso espaço preferido, dos nossos  amigos, dos nossos visinhos, da nossa rua, enfim, das nossas manhãs de sol da Florida, onde fazemos as nossas caminhadas!. (fellow travelers, are they still out there? Are you still following?. What patience!. Well, we hope you will travel with us, enjoy the scenery, as much or more than we do, since we have been away from home for weeks, away from our backyard, our favorite space, our friends, our neighbors, our street, of our Florida sunny mornings, where we take our walks!

…hoje, viajamos através do estado de Oregon, de leste para oeste, além de outros motivos, as principais “vedetas” da nossa jornada, são, o Rio Columbia, que divide a fronteira com o estado de Washington, vamos segui-lo, ao longo de muitas milhas e, a célebre “Oregon Trail”, tal como já fizemos na “Santa Fé Trail”, na “Appalachian Trail” e na “Mormon Trail”, finalmente pensamos em caminhá-la por algum tempo! (today, we travel through the state of Oregon, from east to west, and other reasons, the main “vedettes” of our journey are the Columbia River, which divides the border with Washington state, we will follow it to the for many miles, and the celebrated “Oregon Trail”, as we have done on the “Santa Fe Trail”, the “Appalachian Trail” and the “Mormon Trail”, we finally thought to walk it for a while!

…algumas vezes durante a noite e, mais pela madrugada, ouvi-mos aquele som característico, “wooonnnnwaaannnnwuuunnn”, e “trrraaakkk, trrraaakk, trrraaakkk”, dos combóios que carregam mercadorias, e circulam devagar, como a querer dizer, “esperem, olhem para mim, eu é que marco o passo da vossa vida, esperem que eu passe, não se coloquem no meu caminho”!. Sim, foi mais ou menos isto que aconteceu durante a noite, pois o combóio passava próximo, mas dormimos, pois a nossa “White Fox”, é algo confortável!. (sometimes at night, and more at dawn, we hear that characteristic sound, “wooonnnnwaaannnnwuuunnn”, and “trrraaakkk, trrraaakk, trrraaakkk”, of trains carrying goods, and circulate slowly, as if to say, “wait , look at me, I mark the step of your life, wait for me to pass, do not get in my way!”. Yes, that was more or less what happened during the night, as the train passed nearby, but we slept, because our “White Fox” is something comfortable !.

…antes da construção do Interstate 84, Mitchell Point era a localização do túnel panorâmico, na Histórica Estrada do Rio Columbia. Hoje, a vista que se observa da base do Mitchell Point, oferece excelentes cenários do Columbia River Gorge. O Broughton Flume, também pode ser visto, empoleirado nas encostas de Washington, em frente a este ponto!. (before construction of Interstate 84, Mitchell Point was the location of scenic tunnel on the Historic Columbia River Highway. Today the overlook at the base of Mitchell Point provides great views of the Columbia River Gorge. The Broughton Flume can be seen perched on the Washington hillsides across from the point)!.

…entrámos de novo no Oregon Highway 30 e Interstate 84, a quem também chamam “Columbia River Highway”,  que se estende desde a cidade de Astoria, para a fronteira de Idaho. Este Highway, foi a primeira estrada cénica, construída nos Estados Unidos. Hoje, a estrada é propriedade do Departamento de Transportes de Oregon e foi listada no Registro Nacional de Lugares Históricos em 1983 e, em 1984, a Sociedade Americana de Engenheiros Civis declarou a estrada um Marco Histórico Nacional de Engenharia Civil, e mais, em 1998, a estrada foi designada uma “All-American Road”!. Nós, com algum carinho, chamamos-lhe cénico “Highway 84”!. (we re-entered Oregon Highway 30 and Interstate 84, which they also call the Columbia River Highway, which extended from Astoria to the Idaho border. The Highway was the first scenic highway constructed in the United States. Today the Highway is owned by Oregon Department of Transportation and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, and in 1984, the American Society of Civil Engineers declared the road a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark, and in 1998 the road was designated an “All-American Road”!. We, with some affection, call it scenic “Highway 84”)!.

…o rio Grande Ronde, é um afluente do rio Snake, com 182 milhas (293 km) de comprimento, no nordeste do Oregon e sudeste de Washington, atravessando o Vale Grande Ronde agrícola, no seu percurso médio e, uma série de desfiladeiros com muito cenário, através do seu percurso inferior!. (the Grande Ronde River, is a tributary of the Snake River, 182 miles (293 km) long, in northeastern Oregon and southeastern Washington. It flows through the agricultural Grande Ronde Valley in its middle course and through a series of scenic canyons in its lower course)!.

…aqui, deixámos o Highway 84, desviando-nos para a U.S. Route 86, no sentido leste, para finalmente poder caminhar no local, onde muitos dos nossos avós, alguns vindos da Europa, na esperança de uma vida melhor, rumavam para oeste, sem conhecer o trajecto por onde iam passar, a não ser pequenos sinais do sol, tropeçando aqui, levantando-se ali, tendo contacto com um terreno que podia ser plano ou acidentado, podia haver água ou ser seco, podia haver vejetação ou árido, podia fazer calor, frio ou neve, podia haver sol ou chuva, podia o céu ser azul ou haver tempestade, iam, por vezes arrastando-se, mas iam para oeste, que era a terra da esperança!. (here, we left Highway 84, diverting to US Route 86, eastbound, to finally be able to walk there, where many of our grandparents, some from Europe, hoping for a better life, west, without knowing the route they were going to pass, other than small signs of the sun, stumbling here, rising there, having contact with a land that could be flat or rough, there could be water or be dry, there could be arid, it could be hot, cold or snow, there could be sun or rain, the sky could be blue or there was a storm, they would sometimes crawl, but they would go west, which was the land of hope)!.

…já no cimo da pequena montanha, podemos apreciar, o que representa para nós, hoje, num mundo onde existem algumas facilidades, o que era a vida do dia a dia, destas pessoas, que demoravam anos a chegar ao seu local de destino, aqueles que tinham a sorte de sobreviver, porque muitos ficavam pelo caminho, outros nasciam, porque havia famílias que saíam do leste com dois filhos e chegavam ao oeste com quatro ou cinco!. (on the top of the small mountain, we can appreciate what it represents for us today, in a world where there are some facilities, what was the daily life of these people, who took years to reach your place of destiny, those who were fortunate enough to survive, because many stood by the way, others were born, because there were families that left the east with two children and came to the west with four or five)!.

…o National Historic Oregon Interpretive Center, é um centro de interpretação, sobre a Oregon Trail, localizado a 9 milhas a nordeste da cidade de Baker, Oregon, na estrada de Oregon 86, no cimo da Flagstaff Hill, que é uma pequena montanha. É operado pelo Bureau of Land Management, em parceria com a  Oregon Trail Preservation Trust, e oferece demonstrações de história viva, programas interpretativos, exposições, apresentações multimédia, eventos especiais e mais de quatro milhas (6 km) de trilhas interpretativas!. (the National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center is a  interpretive center about the Oregon Trail, located 6 miles (9.7 km) northeast of Baker City, oregon on Oregon Route 86 atop Flagstaff Hill. …há alguns anos que pretendiamos visitar o estado de Oregon, gostámos do cenário e da gentileza das pessoas, pelo menos nos centros de visitas, agora dizemos adeus com alguma nostalgia, mas talvez até qualquer dia!. …depois de passar a fronteira, entrámos no estado de Idaho, continuámos no Highway 84, passando por algumas cidades, mas não paramos, a velocidade autorizada era de 80 milhas por hora, mas nós continuámos entre 65 e 70 milhas por hora!. …deixámos o RV Parque, que estava situado entre frondosas árvores, que proporcionava um silêncio divino, na esperança de um dia com sol e céu limpo, pois é esse o cenário mais desejável para o viajante e, a região que íamos atravessar, se existisse esse pormenor, era propício a lindos e únicos cenários!. …como já explicámos no texto de ontem, a Floresta Nacional Olimpica, é um a área onde a paisagem da floresta varia, pois vai desde uma zona temperada, passando pelos fiordes de água salgada do Canal da Capota, até aos picos do Monte Washington, como tal, aqui está sol, ali chove, acolá pode estar nevoeiro e mais além a temperatura é fresca, quente ou assim, assim!.
