…um pouco comovidos, dissémos adeus a Homer Spit, talvez nunca mais voltemos a este maravilhoso local!. (a little moved, we said goodbye to Homer Spit, we may never return to this wonderful place)!.

…hoje, iniciamos a viagem de regresso a casa, pois a partir de hoje viajamos na direção do estado da Florida, iremos passar pelas mais remotas povoações, mas sempre no sentido do sul este, dos Estados Unidos, portanto cá vamos de regresso a nossa casa!. (today, we started the trip back home, because from today we travel to the state of Florida, we will pass through the most remote villages, but always towards the south east, the United States, so here we go back our house!.

…viajamos na mesma estrada, agora no sentido norte, passamos por algumas povoações que já visitámos, não paramos, só se for para compra de gasolina ou algum género de primeira necessidade!. (we travel on the same road, now towards the north, we pass through some villages that we have visited, we will not stop, only if it is to buy gasoline or some kind of first necessity)!.

…vamos para a estrada que nos leva à povoação de Whittier, a estrada continua a ter o número 1, mas agora chama-se “Seward Highway”!. (we are going to the road that leads us to the village of Whittier, the road continues to have the number 1, but now it’s called “Seward Highway)!.

Seward Highway, Alaska! (Begich, Boggs Visitor Center)

…aberto ao público em 1986 e rededicado com novas exposições em 2001, o Centro de Visitantes de Begich, Boggs é construído sobre a muralha terminal, deixada pelo  Portage Glacier, (que não visitámos desta vez) em 1914. O Centro de Visitantes oferece uma oportunidade única para aprender sobre a Floresta Nacional Chugach, a segunda maior floresta nacional da América!. (opened to the public in 1986, and rededicated with new exhibits in 2001, the Begich, Boggs Visitor Center is build upon the terminal moraine left behind by Portage Glacier, (which we did not visit this time) in 1914. The Visitor Center offers an unique opportunity to learn about the Chugach National Forest, America’s second largest single national forest!.

…atravessando Portage Creek, entrando no túnel de 450 pés, sob Begich Peak!. (crossing Portage Creek, entering 450-foot tunnel, under Begich Peak)!.

Seward Highway, Alaska! (Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel)

…construído em 1943 como um túnel ferroviário para o Vale do Urso do interior, conectando com o pequeno porto de Whittier, o Túnel Memorial de Anton Anderson foi construído debaixo da Montanha Maynard e, agora não é apenas o túnel da estrada mais longa da América do Norte, mas também um dos únicos a servir tanto os combóios como os automóveis, e quase certamente é o único a usar motores a jato, para manter o ar fresco!. (built in 1943 as a railroad tunnel to connected inland Bear Valley with the small port of Whittier, the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel was built beneath Maynard Mountain and is now not only the longest highway tunnel in North America, but also one of the only ones to service both rail cars and automobiles, and is almost certainly the only one to use jet engines to keep the air fresh)!.

A pequena cidade de Whittier, tem apenas dois prédios. Um está  abandonado e é frequentado por ursos, enquanto que nas outras casas, vive quase toda a população da cidade. Whittier, não pode ser alcançado, seja de carro ou de comboio, sem primeiro passar pelo túnel mais longo da América do Norte!. (the small city of Whittier, has only two buildings. One is abandoned and frequented by bears, while other houses almost all of the city’s population. Neither can be reached without first passing throught the longest tunnel in North American, either by car or train)!.

…recebeu o nome após um Glacier que existe próximo, no entanto, a cidade de Whittier foi estabelecida durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, como um posto de fornecimento militar, chamado Camp Sullivan. Os soldados americanos que chegavam ao Alaska reuniam-se num acampamento antes de se mudarem para outros locais. A presença militar permaneceu na cidade até 1960, quando se tornou num porto de pesca próprio. Além do porto do mar, a única maneira de entrar ou sair do que é agora Whittier, é o túnel, que passa por baixo de uma montanha inteira!. (named after a nearby glacier, the city of Whittier was established in World War II as a military supply post named Camp Sullivan. American soldiers arriving in Alaska would assemble at the camp before moving out. The military presence remained in the city until 1960, when it became a fishing port all its own. Other than the sea port, the only way into or out of what is now Whittier is the Tunnel, that runs right under an entire mountain!

…dado que a estrada só é capaz de acomodar uma única linha de tráfego, indo apenas de uma maneira, em qualquer momento, o túnel agora é controlado por um sofisticado sistema informático que direciona o tráfego a intervalos regulares, com os carros que se dirigem para Whittier, saindo a cada meia hora e, os carros que deixam Whittier podem passar de hora a hora. Os combóios  passam quando podem!.  Aproveitámos este tempo de espera, para comer algo e tirar fotografias à nossa volta! (given that the road is only able to accommodate a single line of traffic, going only one way, at any given time the Tunnel is now controlled by a sophisticated computer system that directs traffic at regular intervals with cars heading into Whittier leaving every half hour, and cars leaving Whittier allowed through on the hour each hour. Trains make it through when they can!. We took advantage of this waiting time, to eat something and take pictures around)!.

…entrámos de novo no tunel, onde a água em alguns locais descia pelas rochas, era longo, mas finalmente saímos, com um grande alívio!. (we entered the tunnel again, where the water in some places descended by the rocks, was long, but finally we left, with great relief)!.

…talvez não seja muito fácil de compreender, mas em muitos locais do estado de Alaska, por onde se entra, também se sai!. (may not be very easy to understand, but in many places in the state of Alaska, where you come in, you also get out)!.

…de novo no sentido norte, no “Turnagain Arm”, em direção à cidade de Anchorage!. (again in the north, in the “Turnagain Arm.” towards the city of Anchorage)!.

…chegámos à cidade de Anchorage, mais uma vez o tempo era sem sol, um pouco cinzento, a estrada continua a ser a número 1, mas muda o seu nome, agora chama-se “Glenn Highway”, já falámos desta cidade em textos anteriores, agora, passamos, dizendo “Benvindo” e logo em seguida “Adeus”!. (we arrived in Anchorage, once again the weather was sunless, a little gray, the road remains number 1, but it changes its name, it’s now called “Glenn Highway”, we’ve already talked about this city in previous texts, now, we go by saying “Welcome” and then “Goodbye”)!.

…as montanhas, ainda com neve, começaram a aparecer, já seguimos na direção do este, a cidade de Palmer era já ali, mas não paramos, pois hoje queríamos alcançar a cidade de Tok, que se situa perto da fronteira com o Canadá!. (the mountains, still with snow, began to appear, we already headed towards the east, the city of Palmer was already there, but we did not stop, because today we wanted to reach the city of Tok, that is located near the border with the Canada)!.

…o cenário começava, com montanhas e vales, o Rio Matanuska a aparecer constantemente, pois é um fluxo longo de 75 milhas no South Central do Alaska, onde este  rio drena num amplo vale, ao sul da Cordilheira do Alaska, conhecido como o Vale de Matanuska!. (the scenery began, mountains, valleys, the Matanuska River, constantly appear, is a 75 mile long stream in South Central Alaska. The river drains a broad valley south of the Alaska Range eponymously known as the Matanuska Valley)!.

…já próximo do Matanuska Glacier, havia placas com anúncio do Glacier, fomos ver, a entrada para o Glacier estava fechada, devia de ser visitas guiadas, e claro, pagando, mas na nossa idade “todo o centavo conta”, portanto seguimos em frente para o parque nacional do Glacier!. (we were approached by the Matanuska Glacier, there were signs with Glacier announcement, we went to see, the entrance to the Glacier was closed, it must be guided tours, and of course, paying, but at our age “every penny counts” so we head to Glacier National Park)!.

…parámos, fomos ver e o Glaciar Matanuska é uma pequena montanha só de gelo, neste vale, no estado do Alaska. Tem mais ou menos  27 milhas (43 km) de comprimento por 4 milhas (6,4 km) de largura, é a maior montanha de gelo, acessível por carro, nos Estados Unidos. O seu terminal alimenta o Rio Matanuska, fica perto da estrada Glenn, a cerca de 100 milhas (160 km) a nordeste de Anchorage. A pequena montanha de gelo Matanuska, flui cerca de 1 pé (30 cm) por dia. Devido à separação do gelo inferior, junto à terra, a partir de 2007, a localização do seu terminal, mudou pouco ao longo das três décadas anteriores!. (we stopped, went to see and Matanuska Glacier is a valley glacier in the state of Alaska. A 27 miles (43 km) long by 4 miles (6.4 km) wide, it is the largest glacier accessible by car in the United States. Its terminus feeds the Matanuska River, it lies near the Glenn Highway about 100 miles (160 km) north-east of Anchorage. Matanusca Glacier flows about 1 foot (30 cm) per day. Due to ablation of the lower glacier, as of 2007, the location of the glacier terminus changed little over the previous three decades)!.

…Glennallen, é um pequeno “oasis”, num cruzamento de estradas. Aqui, quem segue para north, a estrada número 4, que vem de Fairbanks e segue para Valdez, junta-se à estrada número 1, por algumas milhas. A povoação, encontra-se ao longo da estrada de Glenn na sua junção com a estrada de Richardson, a 189 milhas (304 quilómetros) a leste de Anchorage, e apenas um pouco fora do limite ocidental do Parque de Wrangell-St. Elias!. (Glennallen, is a small oasis at a crossroads. Here, who heads north, road number 4, which comes from Fairbanks and goes to Valdez, joins Highway number 1, for a few miles. It lies along the Glenn Highway at its junction with the Richardson Highway, 189 road miles (304 km) east of Anchorage, it is just outside the western boundary of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve!

…com alguma curiosidade, própria de viajantes, parámos para ver os pequenos aviões!. (with some curiosity, own of travelers, we stopped to see the small airplanes)!.

…depois de muitas horas na estrada, passando por bom tempo, mau tempo, algum tráfico, outras vezes estrada deserta, algum sol, nevoeiro, também algum frio, cenários deslumbrantes, outras vezes situações perigosas, em descidas, subidas, túneis ou junto a alguns precipícios, mas chegámos ao local que estava no nosso roteiro de viajem para hoje. Procurámos um RV Parque, confeccionámos a nossa comida, e dormimos na nossa “White Fox”!. (after many hours on the road, passing through good weather, bad weather, some traffic, sometimes deserted road, some sun, fog, also some cold, dazzling scenarios, sometimes dangerous situations, in descents, ascents, tunnels or along some cliffs, but we came to the place that was on our travel itinerary for today. We searched for an RV park, made our food, and slept on our “White Fox” !.
