Highway 5, Washington! (to south, to Seattle)

…em Portugal, onde nascemos, numa aldeia na encosta da montanha, nós crianças, onde as pessoas mais idosas diziam, em certos dias pela manhã, em que não havia sol nem céu azul, “que o dia estava encoberto”!. Pois, prezados amigos de viajem, hoje o dia “está encoberto”!. (in Portugal, where we were born, in a village on the mountainside, we children, where the older people said, on certain days in the morning, when there was no sun or blue sky, “that the day was covered”! For, dear friends of travel, today the day “is hidden”)!.

…ainda era manhã cedo, já muito próximo da cidade de Seattle, deviámo-nos para a estrada 99, na intenção de visitar a torre, “Space Needle”!. (it was still early morning, already very close to the city of Seattle, we were off to Highway 99, intending to visit the tower, “Space Needle”)!.

…a Space Needle é uma torre de observação em Seattle, é um marco do noroeste do Pacífico, é um ícone de Seattle, foi construído no Centro de Seattle para a Feira Mundial de 1962, que atraiu mais de 2,3 milhões de visitantes, quando cerca de 20 mil pessoas, usavam por dia, os seus elevadores!. (the Space Needle is an observation tower in Seattle, a landmark of the Pacific Northwest, and an icon of Seattle, it was build in the Seattle Center for the 1962 World’s Fair, which drew over 2.3 million visitors, whem nearly 20,000 people a day used its elevators)!.

…está construída, para suportar ventos de até 200 milhas por hora, ou terremotos de 9,1 de magnitude, tão fortes como o terremoto de 1700, em Cascadia!. (it is built to withstand winds of up to 200 miles per hour, and earthquakes of up 9.1 magnitude, as strong as the 1700 Cascadia earthquake)!.

…o horizonte do centro de Seattle, bem como as Montanhas Olímpicas e Cascade, Mount Raineier, Mount Baker, Elliott Bay e as ilhas vizinhas, podem ser vistas do topo da Space Needle!. (the downtown Seattle skyline, as well as the Olympic and Cascade Mountains, Mount Raineier, Mount Baker, Elliott Bay and surrounding islands can be viewed from the top of the Space Needle!.

…antes de seguir para a área do porto de Seattle, ainda tirámos mais algumas fotografias, pois dizem-nos que a  Space Needle é uma das estruturas mais visitadas e fotografadas do mundo, uma vez que é a estrutura mais alta a oeste do Rio Mississippi, tem 605 pés (184 m) de altura, 138 pés (42 m) de largura e pesa 9,550 toneladas!. (before heading to the Seattle Harbor area, we still took some more photos, as they tell us that the Space Needle is one of the most visited and photographed structures in the world, and one the tallest structure west of the Mississippi River, it is 605 ft. (184 m) high,138 ft (42m) wide, and weighs 9,550 tons)!.

…guiando por um labirinto viaturas, que é muito típico nas grandes cidades, chegámos à área do Porto de Seattle, com muita sorte, encontrámos um espaço para a nossa “White Fox” descançar!. (driving through a labyrinth of vehicles, which is very typical in big cities, we arrived in the Seattle harbor area, with great luck, we found a space for our “White Fox” to rest)!.

…nós andando por ali, visitávamos o que qualquer pessoa vê, ou quer admirar, numa zona de movimento, com lojas, restaurantes, áreas lindas, com água e barcos de pesca ou de cruzeiro, tanto pequenos como grandes, mas o grande problema, que afinal até nem era problema, era que “o dia estava encoberto”!. (we walked there, we visited what anyone sees, or wants to admire, in a zone of movement, with shops, restaurants, beautiful areas, water and fishing boats or cruise boats, both small and large, but the great problem, which was not even a problem, was that “the day was covered”)!.

…fomos caminhando para a área do Centro do Mercado Público!. (we were walking to the Public Market Center area)!.

…uau, que azáfama, vende-se de tudo, existem linhas de pessoas, esperando para serem atendidas, os vendedores dizem que vendem os produtos melhores do mundo, tanto em vegetais, como pão ou qualquer outro género alimentício, ou mesmo qualquer outro produto, é do género “chega-te para lá, que eu quero ser atendido primeiro”!. (wow, bustle, sell everything, there are lines of people, waiting to be served, sellers say they sell the world’s best products, whether on vegetables, bread or any other food, or even any another product, is the genre “get there, I want to be served first!”)!.

…o mercado tem fama, é construído à beira de uma colina íngreme e consiste em vários níveis mais baixos,  localizados abaixo do nível principal. Cada um apresenta uma variedade de lojas exclusivas, como antiquários, lojas de livros de quadrinhos, que hoje são procurados e  colecionáveis, até pequenos restaurantes familiares e,  algumas das lojas mais antigas de Seattle!. (the Market has fame, the Market is built on the edge of a steep hill, and consists of several lower levels located below the main level. Each features a variety of unique shops such as antique dealers, comic book and collectible shops, small family-owned restaurants, and one of the oldest head shops in Seattle!.

…o local onde os visitantes se juntam mais, é na área do mercado do peixe e, sempre que alguém compra um exemplar de peixe, lagosta  ou carangueijo gigante, o vendedor emite um som típico, quase cantando, como por exemplo, “mais um peixe fresco bem vendido”,  que logo é seguido pelos visitantes, que tentam imitar o vendedor!. Além desta curiosidade, em qualquer mesa de peixe exposto, existe um que está “armadilhado” e, o vendedor, sem ninguém dar por nada, puxa um fio e o peixe morto, salta e abre a boca, para delícia de alguns e horror de outros, que saltam de medo!. (the place where visitors gather most is in the area of the fish market, and whenever someone buys a fish, lobster or giant crab, the salesman makes a typical sound, singing, such as ” more fresh fish well sold “, which is soon followed by visitors, who try to imitate the seller !. In addition to this curiosity, in any exposed fish table, there is one that is “trapped” and the seller, with no one giving for anything, pulls a thread and the dead fish, jumps and opens his mouth, to the delight of some and horror of others, who jump from fear)!.

…Pike Place Market, é um mercado público com vista para a Baía Elliott, em Seattle. O mercado abriu a 17 de Agosto de 1907,  e, hoje é um dos mais antigos mercados de agricultores públicos,  operando continuamente, nos Estados Unidos. É um local de trabalho para muitos pequenos agricultores, artesãos e comerciantes. Situado logo a seguir à rua Central, Pike Place, estende-se para noroeste, da Union Street para Virginia Street. Com mais de 10 milhões de visitantes anualmente, o Pike Place Market é o destino turístico mais popular de Seattle, e é a 33ª atracção turística mais visitada do mundo!. (Pike Place Market, is a public market overlooking the Elliott Bay waterfront in Seattle. The Market opens August 17, 1907, and is one of the oldest continuosly opered public farmers’ markets in the United States. It is a place of business for many small farmers, craftspeople and merchants. Named after the central street, Pike Place,runs northwest from union Street to Virginia Street. With more than 10 million visitors annually, Pike Place Market is Seattle’s most popular tourist destination and is the 33rd most visited tourist attraction in the world!).

…a Seattle Great Wheel, é uma grande roda gigante, no Pier 57,  em Elliott Bay, foi a roda gigante mais alta da Costa Oeste, quando abriu em Junho de 2012!. (the Seattle Great Wheel, is a giant Ferris wheel at Pier 57 on Elliott Bay, it was the tallest Ferris wheel in the West Coast, when it opened on June, 2012)!.

…nem tudo é perfeito, pelo menos para quem viaja como nós, por vezes, não existe local apropriado para cozinhar e comer, portanto qualquer local é bom para se comer, desde que não esteja a chover!. (not everything is perfect, at least for those who travel like us, sometimes there is no suitable place to cook and eat, so any place is good to eat, as long as it is not raining)!.

…quando tencionavamos abandonar a cidade de Seattle, surge sol e céu azul, num momento tirámos algumas fotos no que entendemos ser, o melhor local, na frente da Baía!. (when you intend to leave the city of Seattle, sun rises and blue sky, in a moment we took some photos in what we understand to be, the best place, in front of the Bay)!.

…quando entrámos no Highway 101, no sentido norte, a nossa intenção é percorrer a área das Montanhas Olympicas, em toda a sua extensão, pois talvez amanhã, quando regressarmos pela costa do Oceano Pacífico, no sentido sul, nos disseram que o cenário é único! (when we entered Highway 101, heading north, our intention is to traverse the area of the Olympic Mountains, in all its extension, because perhaps tomorrow, when we return by the coast of the Pacific Ocean, heading south, we were told that scenery is unique)!.

…a Floresta Nacional Olímpica é uma Floresta Nacional dos U. S., localizada em Washington, com uma área de 628.115 acres (2.541,89 km2), quase envolve o Parque Nacional Olímpico e a Serra Olímpica. A Floresta Nacional Olímpica contém partes dos condados de Clallam, Grays Harbor, Jefferson e Mason. A paisagem da floresta nacional varia, desde a Floresta Tropical Olímpica temperada, até ao fiorde de água salgada do Canal da Capota, e estende-se  até aos picos do Monte Washington!. (the Olympic National Forest is a U. S. National Forest located in Washington, with an area of 628,115 acres (2,541.89 km2), it nearly surrounds Olympic National Park and the Olympic Mountain range. Olympic national Forest contains parts of Clallam, Grays Harbor, jefferson and Mason counties. The landscape of the national forest varies, from the temperate Olympic rain forest to the salt water fjord of Hood Canal to the peaks of Mt. Washington)!.

…paramos nesta pitoresca povoação, de Port Angeles, que há muitos anos se chamava “Puerto de Nuestra Señora de los Angeles”, que foi explorado pelo explorador espanhol Francisco de Eliza em 1791. Em meados do século 19, após a colonização dos ingleses dos Estados Unidos, o nome foi encurtado e parcialmente anglicizado em sua forma atual de Port Angeles Harbour!. (stop at this picturesque village, the city’s harbor was dubbed “Puerto de Nuestra Senora de los Ángeles” (Port of Our Lady of the Angels) by Spanish explorer Francisco de Eliza in 1791. By the mid-19th century, after settlement by English speakers from the United States, the name was shotened and partially anglicized to its current form Port Angeles Harbor)!.

…finalmente chegámos ao parque de RV, onde cozinhámos a nossa refeição da noite, comemos e dormimos na nossa “White Fox”!. (we finally got to the RV park, where we cooked our evening meal, ate and slept on our “White Fox”)!.
