New Jersey! (Garden State Parkway)
…despedimo-nos da família no estado de Pennsylvania, seguindo em direcção ao estado de Nova Jersey, onde, depois de percorrer algumas estradas, entrámos no famoso Garden State Parkway, que foi construído entre 1946 e 1957 para conectar o suburbano norte de Nova Jersey, com áreas de recurso, ao longo da Costa Atlântica e, para aliviar o trânsito nas rotas tradicionais norte-sul, que passavam pelo centro das cidades, como por exemplo, o US 1, US 9 e a Route 35. Não oficialmente, o Garden State Parkway, tem duas secções, a “secção metropolitana”, ao norte do rio Raritan, e a “secção da costa”, entre o rio Raritan e a cidade de Cape May!. E, foi por esta estrada, com bastante cenário, quase sempre encostados ao Oceano Atlântico, que viajámos até à cidade de Cape May, mesmo no sul do estado de Nova Jersey! (we said goodbye to our family in the state of Pennsylvania, heading for New Jersey, where, after walking some roads, we entered the famous Garden State Parkway, that was constructed between 1946 and 1957 to connect suburban northern New Jersey with resort areas along the Atlantic coast and to alleviate traffic on traditional north-south routes runing through each town center, such as US 1, US 9, and Route 35. Unofficially, it has two sections, the “metropolitan section”, north of the Raritan River and the “shore section”, between the Raritan River and Cape May!. And, it was on this very scenic road, almost always leaning against the Atlantic Ocean, that we traveled to the city of Cape May, even in southern New Jersey!

…o dia estava com o tempo bom, o céu apresentava algumas nuvens, mas a temperatura era agradável!. Depois de comprar o respectivo bilhete de passagem, não como lá no norte, na remota cidade de Dawson City, no Canadá, onde tem quase o mesmo sistema de ferry, para atravessar o Rio Yukon, mas é de graça, não se paga nada, entrámos num dos três navios da frota, que transportam veículos automóveis, camiões de passageiros, RVs, trailers, motocicletas, bicicletas, e passageiros a pé, cada um tem capacidade de cerca de 100 carros!. (the day was in good weather, the sky showed a few clouds, but the temperature was nice!. …depois de estacionar a nossa “White Fox”, fomos à aventura pelo barco, procurando um bom local para fotografar, pois o Cape May-Lewes Ferry é um sistema de ferry nos Estados Unidos, que atravessa um cruzamento de 17 milhas (27 km) na Baía de Delaware e, faz conectar-se North Cape May, New Jersey com Lewes, Delaware!. (after parking our “White Fox”, we went to the adventure by the boat, looking for a good place to photograph, because the Cape May-Lewes Ferry is a ferry system in the United States, that traverses a 17-mile (27 km) crossing if the Delaware Bay to connect North Cape May, New Jersey, with Lewes, Delaware)!.
… a viagem do barco, leva aproximadamente 80 minutos e, podemos, com bom tempo, como por sorte hoje acontece, ver cardumes de golfinhos, ver algum barco que vai em direcção ao Oceano Atlântico, ou simplesmente sentar-se nas diversas cadeiras que por lá existem e admirar o cenário!. (the ferry trip takes approximately 80 minutes, and we can, with good weather, as luckily happens today, see schools of dolphins, see some boat that goes towards the Atlantic Ocean, or simply sit in the various chairs that are there and admire the scenery)!.
…aproximamo-nos da cidade de Lewes, já no estado de Delaware, o terminal substituiu a estrutura existente, construída em 1988, que foi expandida e renovada ao mesmo tempo!. …chegámos à cidade de Lewes, já no estado de Delaware, a cidade é muito, muito antiga, tem história de muitos navegadores, que por aqui aportaram, alguns eram “navios piratas” e, foi o site do primeiro assentamento Europeu em Delaware, um local baleeiro de comercialização, que os colonos holandeses fundaram em 1631 e, chamado de Zwaanendael (Swan Valley). A colónia teve uma existência curta, uma vez que uma tribo local, de nativos americanos “Lenape”, terminou com os 32 colonos em 1632!. Que pena não tivémos, em estar um pouco mais tempo nesta cidade, mas a nossa escala de viajem não o permitia, pois o nosso rumo era o sul!. (we have reached the city of Lewes, already in the state of Delaware, the city is very, very old, it has a history of many navigators, who here contributed, some were “pirate ships”, was the site of the first European settlement in Delaware, a whaling and trading post that Dutch settlers founded on 1631, and named Zwaanendael (Swan Valley). …seguindo na estrada 13, rumo ao sul, entrámos no estado de Maryland, na parte leste, pois também chamam a este estado, “American in Miniature”, por causa das várias dunas de areia, pontilhadas com ervas marinhas, aqui, no leste, com pântanos baixos, repletos de vida selvagem, ou o grande cipreste liso, perto da Baía de Chesapeake, ou as colinas suaves de florestas de carvalho, na região do Piemonte, ou os pinhais, nas Montanhas de Maryland, ao oeste!. (on Route 13, heading south, we entered the state of Maryland, in the east, because they also call this state “American in Miniature”, it ranges from sandy dunes dotted with seagrass in the east, to low marshlandes teeming with wildlife and large bald cypress near the Chesapeake Bay, to gently rolling hills of oak forests in the Piedmont Region, and pine groves in the Maryland mountains to the west)!.

…depois de percorrer uma estrada com algum cenário de muitas árvores, alguns locais onde vendiam peixe e marisco fresco, chegámos ao estado de Virginia, onde nos conta a história que várias expedições europeias, incluindo um grupo de jesuítas espanhois, exploraram a Baía de Chesapeake durante o século XVI. Em 1583, Quenn Elizabeth I, da Inglaterra, concedeu a Walter Raleigh, uma carta patente para plantar uma colónia a norte da Flórida Espanhola. Em 1584, Raleigh enviou uma expedição para a costa atlântica da América do Norte. O nome “Virgínia”, talvez tenha sido sugerido por Raleigh ou Elizabeth, talvez observando seu estado, como “Rainha Virgen”, e também pode ser relacionado a uma frase nativa, “Wingandacoa”, ou nome, “Wingina”!. Nós não sabemos, haverá alguém que saiba, quem deu o nome ao estado?. …já passámos por muitas pontes, mas esta deve de ter sido a mais longa, pois a Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, é um cruzamento de ligação fixa de 23 milhas (37 km), na boca da Baía de Chesapeake, no estado americano da Virgínia. Conecta Northampton County, na península de Delmarva, com Virginia Beach, que faz parte da área metropolitana de Hampton Roads. O túnel da ponte combina originalmente 12 milhas (19 km) de ponte, dois túneis de 1 milha (1.6 km), quatro ilhas artificiais, quatro pontes de alto nível, aproximadamente 2 milhas (3,2 km) de calçada e 5,5 milhas (8,9 km) de estradas de aproximação, atravessando a Baía de Chesapeake e preservando o tráfego, nos canais de entrada da Thimble Shoals e Chesapeake!. (we have passed many bridges, but this must have been the longest, because the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel is a 23-mile (37 km) fixed link crossing at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay in the U.S. state of Virginia. …dizem que esta ponte, no local estratégico que se encontra, poupa aos motoristas, à volta de 95 milhas (135 km) e 1,5 horas numa viagem entre, Virginia Beach e os pontos a norte e a leste do Vale de Delaware, sem passar pelo congestionamento de trânsito, na área de metropolitana de Baltimore e Washinghton!. (say that this bridge, in the strategic place that is, saves motorists 95 miles (153 km) and 1,5 hours on a trip between Virginia Beach and points north and east of the Delaware Valley, without going through the traffic congestion in the Baltimore- Washinghton Metropolitam Area!.
…esta ponte túnel, substituiu os serviços de ferry de veículos, que operavam a partir de South Hampton Roads e da Península de Virgínia, na década de 1930!. (this tunel bridge, replaced vehicle ferry services that operated from South Hampton Roads and from the Virginia Peninsula from the 1930s)!.
…e continua a ser um, dos apenas dez sistemas de túnel de ponte no mundo, três dos quais estão localizados em Hampton Roads, Virgínia.! (and remains one of only ten bridge-tunnel systems in the world, three of which are located in Hampton Roads,Virginia)!.
Highway 64, Virginia! (to west)
…logo à saída da ponte, tomámos a estrada número 60, com intenção de ver as praias de Virginia, tal como já fizemos há muitos anos atrás, porém agora, existem edifícios, restaurantes, lojas, hoteis e outras estructuras na beira do mar, que nos fecham o acesso à praia, é o progresso, voltámos, rumo ao oeste, na estrada número 64!. (just off the bridge, we took road number 60, intending to see the beaches of Virginia, as we did many years ago, but now there are buildings, restaurants, shops, hotels and other structures on the edge of the sea, which closes us access to the beach, is progress, we returned, heading west, on road number 64)!.
Highway 64, Virginia! (Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel)
…passámos outra ponte túnel, é a Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, é um cruzamento de 3,5 milhas (5.6 km) para a Interstate 64 e Route 60, é uma instalação de quatro pistas que inclui pontes, cavaletes, ilhas artificiais e túneis sob os principais canais de transporte para o Porto de Hampton Roads, na parte sudeste da Virgínia!. (we passed another tunnel bridge, it’s the Hampton Roads Bridge- Tunnel, is a 3.5 miles (5.6 km) long crossing for Interstate 64 and U.S.Route 60, it is a four-lane facility comprising bridges, trestles, man-made islands, and tunnels under the main shipping channels for Hampton Roads harbor in the southeastern portion of Virginia)!.

…para quem viaja na estrada 64, em direção ao oeste, no lado direito, desperta a nossa atenção um lindo edifício, que dá pelo nome de Hampton Coliseum, é uma arena polivalente e, a capacidade do local, é configurável de 9,800 a 13,800 lugares!. (for those who travel on highway 64, towards the west, on the right side, arouses your attention a beautiful building, which gives the name Hampton Coliseum, is a multi-purpose arena, and the venue capacity is configurable from 9,800 to13,800 seats)!.
