Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia! (Visitor Center)

…pela manhã, dirigimo-nos para o Centro de Visitas da Vila Colonial Williamsburg. No Parque de Rv, onde passámos a noite, o nosso visinho de Parque, recomendou-nos para visitar a Vila Colonial, com alguma informação, era bom que comprásse-mos um bilhete de entrada, que além de nos proporcionar transporte nos autocarros, dava-nos acesso a alguns locais históricos!.  Como na nossa idade, “todos os centavos contam”, iremos poupar noutras coisas, por tal, comprámos o bilhete, que vem junto de um programa com muita informação e um “livre trânsito”, com a nossa identificação, que nos dá acesso a todos os lugares históricos da Vila Colonial!. (in the morning, we drove to the Visitor Center at Colonial Williamsburg Village. In Parque de Rv, where we spent the night, our neighbor of Parque, recommended us to visit the Colonial Village, with some information, it was good that we bought an entrance ticket, that besides providing us transportation in the buses, gave us access to some historical sites!. As in our age, “all cents count”, we will save on other things, so we bought the ticket, which comes with a program with a lot of information and a “free transit”, with our identification, which gives us access to all historical places of Vila Colonial)!.

…entrámos no autocarro, com destino à Vila Colonial, a primeira paragem foi próximo do Palácio do Governador, onde havia alguns cavalos a pastar nos terrenos ao lado!. (we got on the bus, bound for Vila Colonial, the first stop was near the Governor’s Palace, where there were some horses grazing on the land next door)!.

…quando se olha a frente do Palácio do Governador, que foi reconstruído nos anos 30, no seu local original, fica-se com a impressão de que por aqui houve muita história, é imponente, senhorial!. Quando se abrem as suas portas, daquela que era a residência oficial dos Governadores Reais da Colónia da Virgínia e, também foi uma casa para dois dos governadores pós-coloniais da Virgínia, Patrick Henry e Thomas Jefferson, que aqui fixaram residência!. Foi reconstruído, porque a casa principal foi queimada pelo fogo, em 1780, embora as dependências tenham sobrevivido, ainda algum tempo depois!. (when you look at the front of the Governor’s Palace, which was reconstructed in 1930s on its original site, one gets the impression that there was a lot of history around here, it is imposing, magestic!. When you open its doors, was the official residence of the Royal Governors of the Colony of Virginia, and it was also a home for two of Virginia’s post-colonial governor’s, Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson, residence!. …os anexos do Palácio e, toda a área à volta, é frequentada, por simpáticas senhoras, que vestidas com roupas imitando o passado, prestam todo o tipo de informação, ao qual a nossa esposa Isaura, teve muito orgulho em fotografar-se ao lado de uma dessas personagens! …Williamsburg, foi estabelecida como a nova capital da Colónia da Virgínia em 1699 e, serviu naquela capacidade até 1780, e durante a maior parte desse período, o Palácio do Governador era a residência oficial do Governador Real!. (Williamsburg, was established as the new capital of the Virginia Colony in 1699, and served in that capacity until 1780, and during most of that period, the Governor’s Palace was the official residence of the Royal Governor’s)!.

…a simpática personagem, vestida a rigor, tal qual os antigos colonos, que nos guiava nesta visita, quando chegados à parte de trás do Palácio, diz-nos com algum orgulho, apontando com a mão para cima, “reparem nas Armas Reais, aquele escudo, conta toda a história da Virginia Colonial”!. (the nice character, dressed to the test, just like the old settlers, who guided us on this visit, when we arrived at the back of the Palace, proudly points us, pointing upwards, “look at the Weapons Real, that shield, tells the whole story of Colonial Virginia”)!.

…saindo do Palácio, olhando-o ao longe, caminhando pela grande praça que existe na frente, lembramo-nos de que, por volta do ano de 1781, o prédio principal foi destruído por um incêndio. Na época, estava sendo usado como um hospital para soldados americanos feridos, que seguiam o cerco vizinho de Yorktown, alguns edifícios de tijolos sobreviveram ao fogo, mas foram demolidos durante a Guerra Civil Americana para que pudessem ser recuperados para materiais de construção por forças de ocupação!. (coming out of the Palace, looking at him in the distance, walking through the great square that is in front, we remember that, around the year 1781, the main building was destroyed by a fire. At the time, it was being used as a hospital for wounded Americans soldiers following the nearby Siege of Yorktown, some brick buildings survived the fire, but were demolished during the American Civil War so they could be salvaged for building materials by occupying forces)!.

…fomos caminhando pela Palace Green Street, ao lado da grande praça, que existe na frente do Palácio do Governador, começámos a ver e admirar as primeiras casas deste marco histórico, que é um museu de história viva, havia por lá alguns interpretes de Teatro de Rua, que nos divertiam! (we walked through Palace Green Street, next to the large square that exists in front of the Governor’s Palace, we began to see and admire the first houses of this historical landmark and a living history museum, there were some street theater performers there who had fun)!.

…as estruturas coloniais sobreviventes foram restauradas o mais próximo possível da aparência do século XVIII, com vestígios de edifícios posteriores e melhorias removidas, muitas das estruturas coloniais desaparecidas foram reconstruídas em seus locais originais, que começaram na década de 1930!. Parávamos aqui e ali, tiramos fotos com alguns personagens, que vestiam e falavam, como fossem antigos colonos!. Queriam que entrássemos nas suas casas, para ver como viviam!. (surviving colonial structures have been restored as close as possible to their 18th-century appearance, with traces of later buildings and improvements removed, many of the missing colonial structures were reconstructed on their original sites begining in the 1930s!. We stopped here and there, we took pictures with some characters, who dressed and talked, like old settlers!. They wanted us to enter their homes to see how they lived)!.

…chegámos à Duke of Gloucester Street, logo ali na esquina está a Bruton Parish Church, dizem-nos que é a original, e que foi estabelecida em 1674, pela consolidação de duas paróquias anteriores na Colónia da Virgínia e continua sendo uma paróquia episcopal activa. O edifício, construído em 1711-15, foi designado como Marco Histórico Nacional, em 1970, como um exemplo bem preservado de arquitectura religiosa colonial!. (we arrived at the Duke of Gloucester Street, just around the corner is the Bruton Parish Church, they tell us it’s the original, it was established in 1674 by the consolidation of two previous parishes in the Virginia Colony, and remains an active Episcopal parish. …Colonial Williamsburg, é um marco histórico e um museu de história viva, a sua parte principal, corre ao longo da Duke of Gloucester Street e da Palace Green Street, que se estende de norte para sul, perpendicular a elas. Esta área, é em grande parte plana, com algumas ravinas e riachos, se ramificando na periferia. O critério da cidade de Williamsburg, a rua Duke of Gloucester, assim como outras vias da Área Histórica, estão fechadas para veículos motorizados durante o dia, a favor de pedestres, ciclistas, corredores, caminhantes para cães e veículos de puxados por animais!. (Colonial Williamsburg, is a historical landmark and a living history museum, its core runs along Duke of Gloucester Street and Palace Green, that extends north and south perpendicular to it. This area is largely flat, with ravines and streams branching off on the periphery. At the City of Williamsburg’s discretion, Duke of Gloucester Street and other Historic Area thoroughfares are closed to motorized vehicles during the day, in favor of pedestrians, bicyclists, joggers, dog walkers, and animal-draw vehicles)!.

…na Área Histórica Colonial de Williamsburg, a combinação da restauração e recriação, das partes das três principais vias da Cidade Colonial, e as ruas laterais que se conectam, tentam sugerir a atmosfera, e as circunstâncias dos Americanos do século XVIII!. (Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic Areas combination of restoration and re-creation of parts of the colonial town’s three main thoroughfares and the ir connecting side streets attempts to sugest the atmosphere and the circunstances of 18th-century Americans)!.

…caminhando sempre no sentido sul, pela Duke of Gloucester Street, aparece-nos o edifício da Courthouse, que foi construído de 1770 a 1771 no estilo georgiano, e foi o local onde Benjamin Waller leu em voz alta a Declaração de Independência, em 25 de Julho de 1776, depois que chegou de Filadélfia. O edifício, foi usado como um hospital, para o Exército Confederado, após a Batalha de Williamsburg!. (always heading south on the Duke of Gloucester Street, you will see the Courthouse building, which was constructed from 1770 to 1771 in the Georgian style, and was the site where Benjamin Waller read aloud the Declaration of Independence, on July 25, 1776, after it arrived from Philadelphia. The building was used as a hospital for the Confederate Army, after the Battle of Williamsburg)!.

… os empregados, trabalham e vestem-se como as pessoas fizeram na era, às vezes usando gramática e dicção colonial, embora não acentos coloniais!. Nós caminhando, passando aqui e ali, tirando fotos, entrando em alguns estabelecimentos, vendo o cenário, era verdade, se fechamos os olhos e pensamos, estamos a viver no século 17 ou 18, mas se abrimos os olhos de novo, reparamos em nós e dizemos, “aqui, usando uma máquina de fotografar e vestindo assim, não somos desta era”!. (costumed employees, work and dress the people did in the era, sometimes using colonial grammar and diction, although not colonial accents!. We walked, passing here and there, taking pictures, entering some establishments, seeing the scenery, it was true, if we close our eyes and think, we are living in the 17th or 18th century, but if we open our eyes again, we notice ourselves and we say, “here, using a camera to photograph and wearing so, we are not of this age!”.

…a Área Histórica, inclui edifícios do século 18, durante a qual a cidade foi a capital da Colonial Virgínia, bem como as estruturas do século XVII, do século 19 e do “Renascimento Colonial”, assim como reconstruções mais recentes, mas tudo é agradável de ver! (Historic Area includes buildings from the 18th century, during part of which the city was the capital of Colonial Virginia, as well as 17th-century, 19th-century, and Colonial Revival structures, as well as more recent reconstructions, but everything is nice to see)!.

…chegámos ao fundo da rua, à área do Capitol, tiramos uma foto na entrada e vamos entrar, pois dizem-nos que em 1698, o edifício do Capitólio em Jamestown, Virgínia, ardeu durante um fogo. Após o incêndio, o governo da Virgínia decidiu mudar-se para o interior, longe dos pântanos, no local de Jamestown. Um edifício melhor, um bom Capitólio foi construído, com início em 1701, ficando concluído em 1705, era uma estrutura de duas lojas em forma de H, funcionalmente eram dois edifícios conectados por um arcada!. Durante a visita, uma senhora, vestida como na era colonial, contou-nos alguns pormenores, onde nos explicou entre outras coisas, que em 29 de Junho de 1776, os Virginianos declararam a sua independência da Grã-Bretanha e, escreveram a primeira constituição do estado, criando assim um governo independente, quatro dias antes do Congresso votar em favor da Declaração de Independência, na Filadélfia, em 4 de Julho! (we got to the bottom of the street, to the Capitol area, we took a photo at the entrance and we will enter, as we are told in 1698, the Capitol building in Jamestown, Virginia, burned. Following the fire, the governament of Virginia decided to relocate inland, away from the swamps at the Jamestown site. A better capitol building was constructed, begum in 1701, the Capitol was completed in 1705, was a two-store H-shaped structure, functionally two buildings connected by an arcade!. During the visit, a lady, dressed as in the colonial era, told us some details, where she explained to us other things, that in June 29, 1776, Virginians declared their independence from Great Britain and wrote the state’s first constitution, thereby creating an independent governament four days before Congress voted for the Declaration of Independence, in Philadelphia on July 4!.

…antes de entrar de novo na Duke Gloucester Street, não perdemos a oportunidade de ir ver, numa pequena ravina, junto a um riacho, num cenário perfeito, um “Teatro de Rua”, onde estava em cena, uma história de um casamento de escravos, feito às escondidas, mas apareceu um guarda de uma qualquer Plantação que queria levar presos, todos os intervenientes na cerimónia!. Houve uma pequena confusão, com uma zaragata, entre guardas e escravos, acabando com o guarda a fugir!. No final, toda a assistência, aplaudiu!. (before returning to Duke Gloucester Street, we did not miss the chance to see, in a small ravine, by a stream, in a perfect setting, a “Street Theater”, where it was on the scene, a story of a a slave marriage, done in secret, but there appeared a guard of any Plantation who wanted to take prisoners, all those involved in the ceremony! There was a little confusion, with a ruckus, between guards and slaves, ending with the guard fleeing!. In the end, the whole tour, applauded)!.

…voltámos à Duke Gloucester Street, o tempo passa e, nós não queríamos abandonar a rua, pois todas as pequenas casas, cheias de história, as carruagens antigas, puxadas por cavalos, passando, nos encantavam, são uma atracção turistica, é parte do Histórico Triangulo da Virginia, que inclui, além de Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown e Yorktown, este último, que por falta de tempo não vistámos!. Fica para a próxima!. (we returned to Duke Gloucester Street, time passed and we did not want to leave the street, because all the small houses, full of history, the old carriages, pulled by horses, passing, enchanted us, are a tourist attraction, part of the Historic Triangle of Virginia, which includes, in addition to Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown, the latter, which for lack of time we did not! Next time maybe!.

…estava um dia de sol, mas o calor não era problema para nós, pois vivemos no estado da Florida, onde o sol nos abraça durante todo o ano, mas verificando bem todo este cenário aqui em Colonial Williamsburg, é bem verdade o lema: “Que o futuro tem de se aprender com o passado”!. (it was a sunny day, but the heat was no problem for us as we live in the state of Florida, where the sun holds us all year round, but seeing all this scenery here in Colonial Williamsburg, it is true that motto has been, “That the future may learn from the past”!.

… como no século 18, a Praça do Mercado, é um centro de actividades, onde podemos caminhar nos degraus dos fundadores, enquanto que, com alguma sorte, na nossa imaginação, podemos observar uma qualquer delegação de Indios, que vêm aqui, fazer uma qualquer troca, ou simplesmente na vida real, ver as pessoas que passam!. (as in the 18th century, the Market Square, is a center of activities, where we can walk on the steps of the founders, while, with some luck, in our imagination, we can observe any delegation of Indians, come here, make any exchange, or simply in real life, see people passing by!

…estamos-nos aproximando do final da Duke Gloucester Street, logo aparece a parte comercial, com aqueles restaurantes e bares, casas de recordações e outros estabelecimentos, onde se costuma gastar dinheiro, sem qualquer necessidade e, como na nossa idade o lema é “todos os centavos contam”, passamos em frente, recordando a rua por onde passamos, onde havia uma loja de tipografia, um sapateiro, um ferreiro, uma casa de fabricar pipas, um marceneiro, um armeiro, um queimador de peles, ou um ourives, mas também lá havia, comerciantes que vendiam lembranças turísticas, livros, brinquedos de reprodução, artigos de cerâmica, relojoaria e outras coisas, mas o preço, também não era para nós!. (we are approaching the end of Duke Gloucester Street, soon appear the commercial part, with those restaurants and bars, houses of memories and other establishments, where one usually spends money, without any necessity and, as in our age the motto is “all the cents count,” we go on, remembering the street we passed, where there were, printing shop, a shoemaker’s, blacksmith’s, a cooperage, a cabinetmaker, a gunsmith’s a wigmaker’s and a silversmith’s, but there was also merchants selling tourist souvenirs, books, reproduction toys, pewterware, pottery, but the price, it was not for us either)!.

..o nosso bilhete de entrada, dava-nos acesso ao DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum, que é um museu dedicado às artes finas e decorativas Britânicas e Americanas, de 1670-1840 !. Não nos deixaram tirar fotos, mas o museu realiza diversas coleções relacionadas à fundação dos Estados Unidos, incluindo móveis, pinturas, prata, numismática, cerâmica, ferramentas, texturas, vidro, mapas, armas, média e outros objectos da colecção permanente de Williamsburg Colonial!. (our entry ticket, gave us access to the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum, is a museum dedicated to British and American fine and decorative arts from 1670-1840!. They did not let us take photos, but the museum fetures diverse collections related to the founding of the United States, including furniture, paintings, silver, numismatics, ceramics, tools, textles, glass, maps, weapons, media and other objects from the permanent Colonial Williamsburg collection)!.

…com a visita a este maravilhoso e instructivo Museu, que se situa próximo da South Henry Street, acabou, com bastante pana nossa, a visita a Colonial Williamsburg. Agora, vamos ver se conseguimos encontrar o Colonial Parkway, que nos vai levar a Jamestown Settlement, que é o nosso próximo destino!. Jamestown Settlement, Virginia! (Settlement Village)

…continuando, vamos até à aldeia, é um Forte Colonial do ano de 1610-14, é uma réplica do que era o local dos primeiros navegadores que por aqui aportaram!. É um museu histórico vivo, andam por aqui pessoas vestidas tal como na época, que amávelmente nos informam e, nos explicam, fazendo mesmo eles a sua roupa, de como era a vida destas pessoas naqueles anos, as galinhas andam por ali, penicando no chão, também lá anda um cão rafeiro, cheirando as pernas das pessoas, as pipas, que eram muito frequentes naquela época, os canhões e outras armas, estão lá, armaduras para combate, que deviam de pesar mais que o guerreiro que as usava, o local onde se fazia uma enorme fogueira, que devia de ser comunitária, está cercada por uma enorme paliçada, com pequenos canhões, em locais estratégicos, enfim um museu vivo!. …vamos caminhando para o local onde estão os três navios que aqui chegaram, vamos vendo alguma informação, pois Jamestown foi o primeiro assentamento da Colónia da Virgínia, fundada em 1607, e serviu como capital da Virgínia até 1699, quando a sede do governo foi transferida para Williamsburg!. …chegámos ao local onde a Virginia Company of London, enviou uma expedição para estabelecer um assentamento na Colónia da Virgínia, em Dezembro de 1606. A expedição consistiu em três navios, Susan Constant, Godspeed e Discovery. O Discovery era o navio mais pequeno, o maior navio, a Susan Constant, foi capitaneado por Christopher Newport, de quem já falámos  neste blog. Os navios deixaram Blackwall, agora parte de Londres, com 105 homens e rapazes, e 39 membros da tripulação!. Não havia mulheres nos primeiros navios!. Admirámos o cenário e tirámos algumas fotos!. (we arrived at the place where the Virginia Company of London, sent an expedition to establish a settlement in the Virginia Colony, in December 1606. The expedition consisted of three ships, Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery. The Discovery was the smallest ship, the largest ship, the Susan Constant, was captained by Christopher Newport, of who we talked about on this blog. …já era noite, depois de sair do estado de Virginia, entrando no estado Norte Carolina, parámos para comprar algo para comer, enquanto era oportunidade de os restaurantes estarem abertos. Viajámos mais um pouco, parando na primeira Área de Descanso, no estado Carolina do Sul, onde descansamos, pois não eram horas de procurar um RV Parque!. (it was night, after leaving the state of Virginia, entering the state of North Carolina, we stopped to buy something to eat, while it was an opportunity for the restaurants to be open. (We traveled some more, stopping at the first Rest Area, in the state of South Carolina, where we rested, as it was not time to look for a RV Park)!.
