…é veterano da maldita Guerra Colonial Portuguesa tal como nós e o seu nome é (RC), no entanto, para nós é simplesmente “Roger”!. Felizmente ainda está vivo, apesar de quase uma dezena de intervenções cirurgicas, 7 delas relativas àquela maldita guerra e…, é por ele que periódicamente vamos recebendo algumas notícias de Portugal, notícias estas que não aparecem na comunicação social!.

…He’s a veteran of the bloody Portuguese Colonial War just like us and his name is (RC), however, for us it’s simply “Roger”!. Fortunately, he is still alive, despite almost a dozen surgical interventions, 7 of them related to that damn war and…, it is because of him that we periodically receive some news from Portugal, news that does not appear in the media!.

…e, um dia destes referindo um escrito nosso dizia-nos: “amigo Tony, tu que estás vocacionado para esta escrita tão sensivel, podias dar uma achega, e comparar o tratamento que os USA dão aos seus veteranos, em comparação com o tratamento que os nossos sucessivos governos, nos têm dado, uma vergonha!. Há veteranos que são actualmente sem abrigo, não há local para albergar muitos idosos, que combateram por Portugal, com todas as suas forças e coragem”!.

 …and, one of these days, referring to one of our writings, he said to us: “my friend Tony, you who are destined for this very sensitive writing, could you give a contribution, and compare the treatment that the USA gives to its veterans, in comparison with the treatment that our successive governments have given us, a shame!. There are veterans who are currently homeless, there is no place to house many elderly people, who fought for Portugal, with all their strength and courage”!.

…sim, somos muito sensíveis a esse pormenor do “tratamento dos veteranos após a guerra”!. É um assunto bastante melindroso, muito difícil de comparação, no entanto varia do facto consoante dos países envolvidos, o motivo da origem do conflito, a causa do envolvimento ou ainda de outros factores!.

…yes, we are very sensitive to this detail of the “treatment of veterans after the war”!. It is a rather touchy subject, very difficult to compare, however it varies depending on the countries involved, the reason for the origin of the conflict, the cause of involvement or other factors!.

…e, no caso da Guerra Colonial Portuguesa, apesar de todos nós veteranos combatentes, sabermos que envolveu um governo então colonialista Europeu, que nos arrancou das nossas aldeias, vilas ou cidades e nos forçou a ir combater pessoas que lutavam e morriam pela liberdade e independência do seu território, que nós oriundos da Europa, nunca antes tínhamos visto e nada tínhamos em contra, largando-nos naquela horrorosa guerra de guerrilha que fomos forçados a viver lá em África, onde às vezes parecia que nos estávamos movendo para trás!. 

…and, in the case of the Portuguese Colonial War, despite all of us combat veterans, we know that it involved a then European colonialist government, which took us out of our villages, towns or cities and forced us to go and fight people who fought and died for freedom and independence of its territory, which we from Europe had never seen before and had nothing against, letting go of that horrible guerrilla war that we were forced to live there in Africa, where sometimes it seemed that we were moving backwards!.

…e, ainda hoje, e já lá vão mais de cinquenta anos, quase sessenta, o nosso cérebro vincula fortes respostas emocionais a essa experiência de combate, desencadeando uma cascata de respostas que pensávamos que foram úteis no campo de batalha, mas não agora, na vida real, que só nos trazem sofrimento e muito!. E era agora que alguns veteranos precisavam de auxilio, mas infelizmente parece essa ajuda não acontece, pelo menos em Portugal!. 

...and even today, and it’s been more than fifty years, almost sixty, our brain links strong emotional responses to that combat experience, triggering a cascade of responses that we thought were useful on the battlefield, but weren’t. now, in real life, that only bring us suffering and a lot!. And it was now that some veterans needed help, but unfortunately it seems that help does not happen, at least in Portugal!.

…e, tal como o amigo e veterano combatente “Roger” nos solicita, por aqui nos USA, o “Veterano de Guerra”, não importa em que guerra combateu é muito respeitado!. Vamos então exemplificar um pouco o que por aqui acontece, dando como exemplo a “Guerra do Vietname”, que aconteceu mais ou menos na mesma época e onde convivemos com alguns companheiros quando ainda fazíamos parte do mercado de trabalho e, que com quem constantemente falávamos!.

…and, as the friend and combat veteran “Roger” asks us, here in the USA, the “War Veteran”, no matter what war he fought in is very respected!. So let’s exemplify a little what happens around here, giving the example of the “Vietnam War”, which happened more or less at the same time and where we lived with some companions when we were still part of the job market and, with whom we constantly spoke!.

…por exemplo, quando, numa manhã fria de Janeiro do ano de 1965, foram dadas ordens a um esquadrão de caças F-105 da Base Americana de Okinawa, no Japão, para que se transferisse para a base aérea de Da Nang, no Vietname do Sul, para dar cobertura ao Corpo de Marines, que tinham por missão cruzar o Paralelo 17, que era uma linha de demarcação militar provisória e desmilitarizada entre o Vietname do Norte e o Vietname do Sul!.

…for example, when, on a cold January morning in 1965, orders were given to a squadron of F-105 fighters from the US Air Base in Okinawa, Japan, to transfer to Da Nang Air Base, in Vietnam from the South, to provide cover for the Marine Corps, whose mission was to cross the 17th Parallel, which was a provisional and demilitarized military demarcation line between North and South Vietnam!.

…ou quando, no dia seguinte, 49 destes caças levantaram voo da base de Da Nang, para atacar alvos do Vietname do Norte, fazendo com que a partir desse dia, a guerra não ficasse mais restrita ao território do Vietname do Sul e o primeiro desembarque de 3.500 soldados americanos em Março, naquele território, já se havia transformado em 200 mil em Dezembro do mesmo ano e, quando em 1973, as tropas americanas se retiraram do conflito, havia cerca de 58 mil soldados americanos mortos!.

…or when, the following day, 49 of these fighters took off from the Da Nang base, to attack targets in North Vietnam, meaning that from that day on, the war was no longer restricted to the territory of South Vietnam and the first the landing of 3,500 American soldiers in March, in that territory, had already become 200,000 in December of the same year, and when, in 1973, American troops withdrew from the conflict, there were about 58,000 dead American soldiers!.

…foi uma guerra de guerrilha mortífera, onde o Jack, 1.º cabo do Corpo de Marines, que nasceu no estado do Wyoming e depois de fazer dois “tours” de seis meses cada àquela guerra, regressou ao continente americano, continuou no Corpo de Marines seguindo a carreira militar, pois as suas possibilidades de sobrevivência nas planícies do Wyoming eram montar um cavalo durante todo o dia, guardando manadas de vacas ou cavalos, comendo carne de algum animal que tivesse que ser abatido!.

…it was a deadly guerrilla war, where Jack, 1st Corporal of the Marine Corps, who was born in the state of Wyoming and after making two “tours” of six months each to that war, returned to the American continent, continued in the Corps of Marines following a military career, as their chances of survival on the plains of Wyoming were riding a horse all day, guarding herds of cows or horses, eating meat from any animal that had to be slaughtered!.

…no entanto, o jovem Smith, soldado do Alabama, que foi ferido em combate e transferido para o hospital militar de Saigon, fazia-se transportar numa cadeira de rodas, orgulhando-se de ser combatente, dizendo mesmo, que não se queixava do destino, pois criou a sua família e sempre foi ajudado pelo governo, que lhe proporcionou algum conforto no meio da sua vida de pessoa com alguma desvantagem!. E mesmo o John, soldado ferido em combate, onde posteriormente lhe foi amputado um membro superior, não queria qualquer ajuda, mudando ele mesmo a roda do seu carro!.

…however, young Smith, a soldier from Alabama, who was wounded in combat and transferred to the military hospital in Saigon, was transported in a wheelchair, proud of being a combatant, even saying that he did not complain about the destiny, as he raised his family and was always helped by the government, which provided him with some comfort in the middle of his life as a person with some disadvantage!. And even John, a soldier injured in combat, where an upper limb was subsequently amputated, did not want any help, changing the wheel of his car himself!.

…como tal, o Jack de Wyoming, seguiu a carreira militar sendo um veterano que se encontrava estável na vida!. O jovem Smith do Alabama e o John, também tiveram toda a assistência de que necessitavam, tal como outros veteranos, foram sempre encorajados na procura de trabalho, na compra de casa e outros bens!. Existe mesmo um Banco dos Veteranos, que lhes facilitava e continua a facilitar empréstimos para compra de habitação ou qualquer outro investimento!. 

…as such, Jack from Wyoming, followed his military career being a veteran who was stable in life!. Young Smith from Alabama and John, also had all the assistance they needed, like other veterans, they were always encouraged in looking for work, buying a house and other assets!. There is even a Veterans Bank, which facilitated and continues to facilitate loans for the purchase of housing or any other investment!.

…são preferidos e respeitados, por vezes basta dizer que são veteranos, para algumas portas se abrirem e os ainda sobreviventes da guerra do Vietname têm assistência, existem os Hospitais dos Veteranos, localizados nas principais cidades de quase todos os estados, têm ajudas relativas em algum caso de necessidade extrema e acima de tudo, orgulhavam-se quando começávamos qualquer conversação, pois as primeiras palavras eram em dizer, que não queriam nem ouvir a palavra, “Vietnam Syndrome”, levantavam a cabeça e falavam bem alto, que eram “veteranos de guerra”!.

…they are preferred and respected, sometimes it is enough to say that they are veterans, for some doors to open and the survivors of the Vietnam War are assisted, there are Veterans Hospitals, located in the main cities of almost all states, they have relative help in some case of extreme need and above all, they were proud when we started any conversation, because the first words were to say, that they did not even want to hear the word, “Vietnam Syndrome”, they raised their heads and spoke very loudly, that they were “ war veterans”!.

…claro, também existem excepções como em tudo na vida, há aqueles que procuram ser livres, onde o seu orgulho de “veterano de guerra” é tão forte que não lhes permite receber ordens de estranhos ou conviver com alguma sociedade, e esses…, recebem a sua pensão e também andam por aí, no entanto, muitos não recebem esmolas ou auxilio de estranhos, empurram um carrinho de um qualquer supermercado onde levam todo o seu património, normalmente são acompanhados por um animal de estimação que lhes faz companhia, que pode ser um cão ou um gato, e quando necessitam de assistência, normalmente dirigem-se ao edificio da Perfeitura da Cidade ou ao Hospital dos Veteranos e são recebidos com dignidade!.

…of course, there are also exceptions as in everything in life, there are those who seek to be free, where their pride as a “war veteran” is so strong that it does not allow them to take orders from strangers or live with some society, and those…, receive their pension and also walk around, however, many do not receive alms or help from strangers, they push a cart in any supermarket where they take all their assets, they are usually accompanied by a pet that keeps them company, which it can be a dog or a cat, and when they need assistance, they usually go to the City Hall building or the Veterans Hospital and are received with dignity!.

…obrigado “Roger” por trazer este “assunto à baila”, e nós vamos escrevendo tudo isto com a intenção de que a nossa dor sirva de exemplo, sobretudo para os jovens, para que nunca se envolvam em nenhum conflito armado e compreendam, sem nunca tentar começar ou viver uma qualquer guerra, por mais pequena que seja…, aliás, não existem guerras pequenas, todas são horriveis e mortíferas!. 

…thanks “Roger” for bringing this “subject to the forefront”, and we are writing all this with the intention that our pain serves as an example, especially for young people, so that they never get involved in any armed conflict and understand, without never try to start or live any war, however small it may be…, in fact, there are no small wars, they are all horrible and deadly!.
