…a cidade de Jackson no estado de Wyoming, hoje é uma cidade cheia de lojas, cafés, restaurantes e hoteis, geralmente caros, onde para nós e devido à nossa um pouco avançada idade todos os centavos contam, portanto, somos uns viajantes de “classe económica”, onde acampar também é uma opção!. 

(…the city of Jackson in the state of Wyoming, today is a city full of shops, cafes, restaurants and hotels, generally expensive, where for us and due to our slightly advanced age every cent counts, therefore, we are travelers of “ economy class”, where camping is also an option)!.

…no entanto, por lá ainda se cultiva a lenda dos “Índios & Cowboys”, onde existe o “Xerife”, os “Sallons” ou a “Main Street” onde se praticavam os “duelos” de há muitos anos atrás!. Presentemente é o local onde entre 3 a 4 milhões de pessoas todos os anos se reunem para visitar o Parque Nacional Grand Teton, lar da incrivel e distinta Cordilheira de Teton!. 

(…however, the legend of the “Indians & Cowboys” is still cultivated there, where there is the “Sheriff”, the “Sallons” or the “Main Street” where the “duels” of many years ago were practiced!. (It is the place where between 3 to 4 million people every year gather to visit Grand Teton National Park, home to the incredible and distinctive Teton Range)!.

…e, onde no final da década de 1820, um tal David Edward “Davey” Jackson, andando por esta região, aprisionou um Castor, pensando que era uma boa zona de caça, por aqui ficou, sendo um dos primeiros homens brancos a passar o inverno inteiro no Vale das Montanhas de Teton, talvez na companhia de Nativos Americanos que usavam o vale para fins de caça e cerimónias!.

…assim, hoje esta pequena cidade de Jackson, com uma população de pouco mais de 10.000 habitantes, situada numa área metropolitana economicamente das mais desiguais nos USA, para onde os super-ricos frequentemente voam de jacto particular, para visitarem a área de Jackson Hole que é todo o vale da região e inclui comunidades como Teton Village, Wilson, Aspens, Moran Junction ou outras áreas vizinhas perto do Parque Nacional Grand Teton!.

(…so today this small town of Jackson, with a population of just over 10,000, is situated in one of the most economically unequal metropolitan area in the US, where the super-rich often fly in private jets to visit the Jackson Hole area. …no entanto, visitar o Parque Nacional de Grande Teton é um previlégio!. Porquê?. Porque é lá que ainda existe uma grande vida selvagem activa, sendo um destino privilegiado e muito popular para pessoas tal como nós, que gostam da natureza, fazer caminhadas, pescar ou qualquer outra forma de passar o tempo ao ar livre, pois existem algumas centenas de milhas em trilhos, que nos levam ao lado das montanhas!. 

(…however, visiting Grand Teton National Park is a privilege!. Because?. Because it is there that there is still a great active wildlife, being a privileged and very popular destination for people like us, who enjoy nature, hiking, fishing or any other way of spending time outdoors, as there are a few hundred of miles on trails, which take us to the side of the mountains)!.

…a elevação média do vale é de mais de 6.500 pés acima do nível do mar, com grandes montanhas da cordilheira Teton, que podem atingir mais de outros 6.500 pés de altura, onde começando no início da manhã com algum frio, certamente vamos suar ao subir uma montanha já perto do meio dia, onde em mais nenhum lugar podemos ter um cenário parecido como este!.

…o Snake River ao passar por aqui, com muita frequência forma pequenos lagos, onde existem muitos animais, várias espécies de peixes, entre elas a maior quantidade são trutas, mais de 1.000 espécies de plantas e mais de 300 espécies de pássaros!.

…os manuais de publicidade que nos recomendam quando visitamos este parque dizem-nos que se pode andar por aqui em qualquer época do ano, e nós, já por duas vezes o vistamos, em anos diferentes mas no mesmo mês de Julho!. Da primeira vez havia sol brilhante e da segunda vez, chuva, nevoeiro e alguma neve caindo!. 

(…the advertising manuals that we recommend when we visit this park tell us that you can walk here at any time of the year, and we have visited it twice, in different years but in the same month of July)!. The first time there was bright sun and the second time, rain, fog and some snow falling)!.

…no entanto, em ambas as ocasiões mostrava um cenário deslumbrante, com a particulariedade que da segunda vez, caminhando sobre uma neve suave, aproximando-nos de um riacho, mesmo sabendo que este parque é o lar de ursos, tanto para ursos pretos quanto para ursos pardos, no entanto, geralmente não são agressivos, mas podem agir de forma agressiva se os seus filhotes estiverem próximos, e nós vendo-o, simplesmente batemos as palmas e logo ele fugiu em direcção oposta!.

…por aqui e como a princípio já explicámos, a vida selvagem é constante, mesmo na estrada, as nossas paragens eram frequentes, apreciando entre outras, o pico mais alto das montanhas de Teton, o “Grand Teton”, que foi baptizado por um caçador francês, que devia de ser uma pessoa romântica, pois ao observá-lo, do lado do estado de Idaho, logo lhe chamou “tétons”, que dizem que é um calão francês que designa “mamilos”!.

(…here and as we explained at the beginning, the wildlife is constant, even on the road, our stops were frequent, enjoying, among others, the highest peak of the Teton Mountains, the “Grand Teton”, which was baptized by a French hunter, who must have been a romantic person, because when observing him, from the state of Idaho, he soon called him “tetons”, which they say is a French slang that designates “nipples”)!.

…e, no percurso que íamos fazendo era impossível não parar em alguns locais onde o cenário era deslumbrante, sendo quase obrigados a parar e fotografar ou quando algum animal selvagem cruzava ou simplesmente estava parado ou alimentando-se ao lado da estrada rural!.

(…and, on the route we were doing, it was impossible not to stop in some places where the scenery was stunning, being almost forced to stop and photograph or when some wild animal crossed or was simply stopped or feeding on the side of the rural road)!.

…e desta última vez, embora o tempo não estivesse muito bom para fotos, ainda fotografámos as ruinas do que é o celeiro considerado mais fotografado dos USA, a oeste da estrada conhecida como Mormon Row, próximo da cadeia de montanhas que está quase sobre ele, formando uma composição visual impressionante!. No entanto, o local não é apenas famoso porque é fotogênico, porque o celeiro é tudo o que resta da propriedade construída por Thomas Alma Moulton e seus filhos entre 1912 e 1945!. Pena foi que na ocasião de fotografar, o tempo estava de frio e de chuva!.

(…and this last time, although the weather was not very good for photos, we still photographed the ruins of what is considered the most photographed barn in the USA, west of the road known as Mormon Row, close to the mountain range that is almost above it. , forming an impressive visual composition!. However, the site is not only famous because it is photogenic, because the barn is all that remains of the property built by Thomas Alma Moulton and his sons between 1912 and 1945!. It was a pity that at the time of photographing, the weather was cold and rainy)!.

…mais uma vez andámos pelo estado agora chamado de Montana e, se podesse-mos contar a história de como o território de Montana surgiu, seria uma história um pouco dramática, porque envolvia continentes que colidiram e vulcões que entraram em erupção!. Algumas destas coisas aconteceram muito lentamente e ao longo de milhões de anos e outras talvez tivessem acontecido de repente e, se qualquer de nós pudesse assistir a tudo isto, seria como num filme, que seria o filme mais emocionante do mundo!.

(…once again we walked through the state now called Montana and, if we could tell the story of how the territory of Montana emerged, it would be a somewhat dramatic story, because it involved continents that collided and volcanoes that erupted!. Some of these things happened very slowly and over millions of years and others might have happened suddenly, and if any of us could watch all this, it would be like in a movie, which would be the most exciting movie in the world)!.

…as montanhas cobertas de gelo de há milénios que hoje ao longe avistamos, milénios atrás, devia de ser uma área onde os ventos sopravam quando os mares se encheram rebentando as suas margens que possívelmente inundaram a terra e depois foram recuando, e hoje, os picos dessas montanhas, aos nossos olhos parecem-nos um “naufrágio” com a proa do barco apontando para o céu, onde nos dizem que por lá já encontraram fósseis de criaturas marinhas!.

(…the mountains covered with ice for millennia that we can see in the distance, millennia ago, must have been an area where the winds blew when the seas filled up, bursting their shores that possibly flooded the land and then retreated, and today, the peaks of these mountains, to our eyes they look like a “shipwreck” with the bow of the boat pointing to the sky, where we are told that there they have already found fossils of marine creatures)!.

…e nós, simples visitantes, viajantes do mundo, percorremos os caminhos usados pelos imigrantes que seguiam pela “California Trail”, “Mormon Trail” ou a “Oregon Trail”, que todas iam no nosso pensamento, onde centenas de anos atrás, caravanas de carros puxados por animais, por aqui viajavam, rumo ao oeste, atravessavam planícies, montanhas rochosas ou rios, suportavam calor, frio, neve ou chuva, muitos eram europeus tal como nós, desembarcados nos portos de Boston, New York ou Philadelphia, havendo famílias que começavam a viagem rumo ao oeste com um filho,  chegando ao seu destino com três e quatro!. Foram esses “heróis”, os que iniciaram estas longas estradas, no meio de nada!.

(…and we, simple visitors, world travelers, walked the paths used by immigrants who followed the “California Trail”, “Mormon Trail” or the “Oregon Trail”, which all went in our thoughts, where hundreds of years ago, caravans of carts pulled by animals, here they traveled, heading west, crossing plains, rocky mountains or rivers, enduring heat, cold, snow or rain, many were Europeans like us, disembarked in the ports of Boston, New York or Philadelphia, having families who started their journey westward with one child, arriving at their destination with three and four!. …e continuando, no século dezoito, o hoje Território de Montana foi organizado fora do Território de Idaho, onde as áreas a leste da Divisão Continental haviam sido parte do Território de Nebraska e do Território de Dakota que tinham sido adquiridas pelos USA na compra da Louisiana, que como já explicámos também incluía uma parte do Território de Idaho, situado a oeste da divisão continental e a leste da Cordilheira de Bitterroot, que já havia sido adquirida pelos USA no Tratado de Oregon, que originalmente incluída no Território do Oregon!.

…portanto, e para que se compreenda melhor, estamos a explicar tudo isto para lembrar-mos que, hoje viajando por aqui por uma estrada rápida, a uma velocidade de 75 milhas (120 km) por hora e, olhando o mapa dos USA, vemos diversos estados, todavia naquela época era diferente e, querendo exemplificar melhor a nossa história, temos que nos posicionar tal como se estivésssemos a viver no século dezoito!.

…e continuando nessa época, não encontramos melhores palavras para explicar a paisagem deste maravilhoso hoje estado de Montana, do que ler e meditar nas memórias de um descendente dos povos Lakota, Cheyenne do Norte e Arapaho,que entre outras coisas nos explica que tinha seis anos e quatorze dias na época da luta com o então Tenente-Coronel George Armstrong Custer, que comandava um dos batalhões do famoso 7.º Regimento de Cavalaria dos USA na Batalha de Little Big Horn, (local que também visitámos, prestando o nosso respeito numa meditação profunda), e como lhe foi dito por seu pai Chefe Águia Negra e sua mãe, Cisne Branco, irmã do Chefe Cavalo Louco e nos diz que:

Lá, podemos caçar o alce, o veado e o antílope quando suas peles estiverem aptas para se vestir!. Lá podemos encontrar muitos ursos brancos e ovelhas da montanha!. No outono, quando os cavalos estão gordos e fortes dos pastos da montanha, podemos descer para as planícies e caçar búfalos ou prender castores nos riachos e quando chega o inverno, podemos abrigar-nos nos fundos lenhosos ao longo dos rios!.

(…the “Crow Country”, (now the state of Montana), is in exactly the right place, because it has snowy mountains and sunny plains, all kinds of weather and good things for all seasons, and when the summer heat burns the prairies, we can go down under the mountains where the air is sweet and fresh, the fresh grass and the glistening streams spring from the snow banks!. …depois de ler tudo isto e ter fotografado algum cenário por onde andámos, só nos resta concordar que defacto…, o Grande Espírito colocou exactamente tudo no lugar certo e tudo de bom se encontra lá e, não importando por onde viajamos, quando de lá saímos…, vamos com toda a certeza…, ter algumas saudades!.

…considerado como parte designada da “Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail”, que nos oferece oportunidade para ver o verdadeiro “antigo habitat da Flórida” com mais de 40 espécies de aves migratórias e pernaltas, como garças nevadas e garças azuis!.

…uf…, que maravilha!. E mais, tem estacionamento pavimentado para veículos nos seus dois terminais!. A superfície da trilha é pavimentada, tem duas pontes em madeira sobre dois pequenos riachos e a sua largura é de aproximadamente 5 a 6 pés e com muitos espaços de passagem mais amplos!. 

(…uf…, how wonderful!. What’s more, it has paved parking for vehicles at its two terminals!. The trail surface is paved, has two wooden bridges over two small streams and its width is approximately 5 to 6 feet and with many wider passage spaces)!.

…no extremo sul existem banheiros com pátio coberto e 2 mesas de piquenique, um cais para pescar ou relaxar, uma estação de manutenção de bicicletas disponível para uso 24 horas por dia, sete dias por semana e vários bancos ao longo da trilha!.

(…at the south end there are restrooms with a covered patio and 2 picnic tables, a pier for fishing or relaxing, a bicycle service station available for use 24/7 and several benches along the trail)!.

…o seu comprimento de ida e volta é de aproximadamente 3,2 milhas e é geralmente considerado um percurso fácil, levando em média à volta de 1 hora para ser concluído!.

…como já explicámos, é uma trilha popular para observação de pássaros, caminhadas e ciclismo de estrada, mas também podemos desfrutar de um pouco de solidão durante os horários mais calmos do dia!.

…uma semana depois dos ventos fortes e da água de chuva abundante que originaram algumas inundações quando rios e canais transbordaram com o escoamento da chuva e que nos prenderam à volta de casa, onde entre outras tarefas íamos limpando toda a bagunça que a tempestade IAN por aqui nos deixou!.

(…a week after the strong winds and abundant rainwater that caused some floods when rivers and canals overflowed with the rain runoff and that trapped us around the house, where among other tasks we were cleaning up all the mess that the IAN storm caused. here left us)!.

…felizmente o furacão IAN já passou!. Na nossa área as ruas estão de novo limpas, as linhas de energia estão repostas no lugar, já esquecemos o susto da vida real e afortunadamente ninguém ficou machucado e, fomos à praia de novo!.

…agora o som era diferente, não se ouvia o bater do vento ou da chuva, ouvia-se sim, aqui e ali, o som de motosserras que cortavam em pedaços para serem removidas, algumas árvores que não resistiram à tempestade!.

…e, a vegetação tropical vinda de outras paragens inundou o areal da praia, onde também se podia ver parte de embarcações, resto de madeira de passadiços, troncos de palmeiras gigantes e outras “coisas estranhas”, que vieram dar à costa!.

…mas tudo já parece voltar à normalidade e as aves marinhas voltaram à praia, as tartarugas e os golfinhos já vêm à superfície como a querer “saudar-nos”!.

 …a Mãe Natureza é linda e incrível, mas temos que ter por ela muito respeito antes que seja tarde demais e ela se revolte de novo!.

…a cidade onde vivemos na região norte/leste do estado da Florida deu-nos o alerta!. As recomendações para sobrevivência, no caso de ser-mos atingidos pela tempestade que se aproximava vinda da ilha de Cuba eram constantes, pois podia colocar-nos em risco de vida, com ventos de força de furacão, inundações repentinas e possíveis deslizamentos de terra, que podiam começar na nossa área na noite de quarta-feira, prolongando-se por alguns dias, com potenciais ventos devastadores, causando relâmpagos e inundações consideráveis nos riachos, rios e lagos, onde o possível núcleo da tempestade IAN era previsto passar!.

(…the city where we live in the north/east region of the state of Florida gave us the alert!. The recommendations for survival, in case we were hit by the storm that was approaching coming from the island of Cuba were constant, as it could put our lives at risk, with hurricane force winds, sudden floods and possible landslides, which could start in our area on Wednesday night, extending for a few days, with potentially devastating winds, causing lightning and considerable flooding in streams, rivers and lakes, where the possible core of the IAN storm was predicted to pass)!.

…nós, já um pouco experientes, pois vivemos por aqui vai para duas dezenas de anos, embora sabendo que é muito difícil saber exactamente a  localização do seu núcleo e tempo de passagem, colocámos as lanternas, baterias e o gás propano, em local seguro e à mão, amarrámos os vasos das plantas e pequenas árvores em redor da casa, comprando com antecedência alguma comida de sobrevivência como embalagens de secos, conservas, água, biscoitos ou pão, pois existe um perigo de marés altas e de tempestade ao longo de grande parte da costa da Flórida, causando dificuldade em nos deslocar de um local para outro!. 

(…we, already a little experienced, since we have lived here for two decades, although knowing that it is very difficult to know the exact location of its nucleus and time of passage, we placed the flashlights, batteries and propane gas, in a safe place. and by hand, we tied the potted plants and small trees around the house, buying in advance some survival food such as dry packets, preserves, water, cookies or bread, as there is a danger of high tides and storms along large part of the Florida coast, causing difficulty in moving from one location to another)!.

…ficámos em alerta e…, eram precisamente 05:26 horas da madrugada de quarta-feira dia 28 de Setembro que a tempestade tropical chegou à área onde vivemos com fortes rajadas de chuva e vento que iam aumentando de velocidade levando consigo folhas, galhos dos pinheiros que se começaram a quebrar, voando por toda a parte!. 

(…we were on alert and…, it was precisely 5:26 am on Wednesday, September 28th that the tropical storm arrived in the area where we live with strong gusts of rain and wind that were increasing in speed, taking with it leaves, branches of the pine trees that began to break, flying everywhere)!.

…a chuva caía cada vez com maior força, a palmeira do vizinho curvava-se e balançava fustigada pelo vento e pela chuva, no nosso quintal as pequenas árvores de laranja e tangerina também eram varridas pelo vento e pela chuva que uivava nas portas de rede de uma pequena divisão da casa onde existem alguns vasos com flores trppicais que a dedicada esposa Isaura cuida!.

(…the rain was falling more and more, the neighbor’s palm tree bent and swayed by the wind and rain, in our backyard the small orange and tangerine trees were also swept away by the wind and the rain that howled through the hammock doors a small room in the house where there are some vases with tropical flowers that the dedicated wife Isaura takes care of)!.

…ficámos com algum receio!. Lá fora o vento e a chuva era cada vez mais forte, arrastando atrás de si folhas, galhos e ramos de árvores que se dobravam, balançando-se e…, passado algumas horas ficámos sem energia eléctrica, o som que se ouvia lá fora era com se fosse um combóio passando e de seguida um animal uivando!. Acendemos as lanternas e bebemos alguma água, ficando mais serenos!. Entretanto a energia eléctrica returnou mas…, o sinal do telefone fixo e de internet desapareceu!.

(…we were a little afraid!. Outside the wind and rain was getting stronger, dragging leaves, branches and tree branches behind them that bent, swaying and…, after a few hours we were without electricity, the sound that could be heard outside was (as if it were a train passing by and then an animal howling!. We lit the lanterns and drank some water, becoming more serene!. Meanwhile, the electricity returned but…, the landline and internet signal disappeared)!.

…o telefone celular constantemente recebia mensagem com avisos de que não se devia transitar pelas ruas, pois os níveis das águas costeiras continuavam a subir ao longo da costa oeste da Flórida, existindo o perigo de risco de vida, pois os ventos com força de tempestade tropical continuavam causando entre outras catástrofes, a inundação dos rios e lagos!. E tudo isto iria acontecer ao longo das costas do nordeste da Flórida, Geórgia e da Carolina do Sul!.

(…the cell phone was constantly receiving messages with warnings not to walk on the streets, as coastal water levels continued to rise along the west coast of Florida, with the danger of life, as the storm-force winds (tropical rain continued causing, among other catastrophes, the flooding of rivers and lakes)!. And all of this would happen along the coasts of northeast Florida, Georgia and South Carolina)!.

…as mensagens no telefone celular eram constantes avisando-nos de que havia inundações aqui e ali!. Às 03:18 horas da madrugada de quinta-feira, 29 de Setembro a tempestade ocorria com vento entre 65 knots, 75 milhas por hora e a previsão de chuva era de 4 a 8 polegadas!. Nós, felizmente vivemos a uns 11 ou 12 pés acima do nível da água do mar e continuávamos sem vestígios de inundação, todavia, na frente da casa a água da chuva e as folhas, galhos e ramos das árvores cobriam a estrada!. 

(…messages on the cell phone were constant warning us that there were floods here and there!. At 03:18 a.m. on Thursday, September 29, the storm occurred with wind between 65 knots, 75 miles per hour and the forecast of rain was 4 to 8 inches!. We, luckily, lived about 11 or 12 feet above sea level and still had no traces of flooding, however, in front of the house rainwater and leaves, twigs and branches of trees covered the road)!.

…quando tudo passou, recolhemos algumas telhas do nosso telhado, alguém especializado veio reparar o telefone fixo e o sinal de internet e…, as notícias na televisão era de que na nossa área os ventos ultrpassaram as 75 milhas por hora!. 

(…when everything was over, we collected some tiles from our roof, someone specialized came to repair the landline and internet signal and…, the news on television was that in our area the winds exceeded 75 miles per hour)!.

…estamos agradecidos ao criador por tentar-mos controlar as nossas emoções enquanto tudo isto passava e termos sobrevivido a mais uma tempestade tropical e…, amanhã será outro dia nas nossas vidas e…, iremos na beira do mar ver o que resta da nossa praia!.

(…we are grateful to the creator for trying to control our emotions while all this was going on and having survived another tropical storm and…, tomorrow will be another day in our lives and…, we will go to the seaside to see what is left of our beach)!.

…e fomos ver, as ondas eram revoltosas e gigantes, em algumas áreas galgaram a terra, os passadiços estavam em parte destruídos, as gaivotas e outras aves marinhas andavam pela floresta e…, não havia golfinhos, que tinham fugido das ondas, onde era costume por ali andarem!.

(…and we went to see, the waves were revolting and gigantic, in some areas they overcame the land, the walkways were partially destroyed, the seagulls and other seabirds were walking through the forest and…, there were no dolphins, which had fled from the waves, where it was customary to walk there)!.

…felizmente já passou!.
