…ouvindo e sentindo o vento do oeste!. (Listening and feeling the wind from the west)!.

…quinto dia!. (Fifth day)!.

…estávamos no estado do Utah, estávamos cercados de aventura!. (We were in the state of Utah, we were surrounded by adventure)!.

…esperando ver, sobretudo as coisas que no nosso pensamento julgamos que nos vão assustar!. Queremos vê-las, senti-las, esperando sentir o que nunca antes sentimos!. (Hoping to see, above all the things that in our thinking we think will frighten us!. We want to see them, to feel them, hoping to feel what we have never felt before)!.

…esperamos encontrar lugares e pessoas que nunca vimos antes, com cenários e pontos de vista diferentes que, sem olharem a preconceitos ou religiões, sintam algum orgulho em habitar este planeta a que vamos chamando Terra e, se não encontrarmos esses cenários e essas pessoas, esperamos ter forças para começar tudo de novo, até outra oportunidade!. (We hope to find places and people that we have never seen before, with different scenarios and points of view that, without looking at prejudices or religions, feel some pride in inhabiting this planet that we are calling Earth and, if we do not find these scenarios and these people, we hope to have the strength to start all over again, until another opportunity)!.

…pernoitámos num parque de campismo da cidade de Moab, que é uma cidade no leste do estado do Utah, uma verdadeira porta de entrada para as grandes formações rochosas vermelhas, como as do Parque Nacional dos Arcos, onde chegámos ainda manhã!. (We stayed overnight at a camping site in the city of Moab, which is a city in the eastern state of Utah, a true gateway to the great red rock formations, such as the Arcos National Park, where we arrived in the morning)!.

…já por aqui andámos uns anos atrás, mas de passagem, ficando muito por ver e admirar neste Parque Nacional, que fica acima de uma camada de evaporação subterrânea ou talvez um leito de sal, que é a principal causa da formação dos seus arcos, pináculos, rochas equilibradas, barbatanas de arenito e monólitos erodidos, que se espalham por toda esta área!. (We have been here a few years, but in passing, much to see and admire in this National Park, which is above a layer of underground evaporation or perhaps a bed of salt, which is the main cause of the formation of its arches, pinnacles, balanced rocks, sandstone fins and eroded monoliths, which spread throughout this area)!.

…entrando no Parque, viajámos pelas diversas artérias que nos conduzem perto de alguns lugares estratégicos, com vista para os principais monumentos, alguns em arco, compostos de arenito vermelho, onde quase todos os visitantes procuram o melhor angulo para uma boa fotografia!. (Entering the Park, we traveled through the various arteries that lead us near some strategic places, overlooking the main monuments, some arched, composed of red sandstone, where almost all visitors look for the best angle for a good photograph)!.

…desta vez queríamos ver de perto o célebre “Delicate Arch” (Arco Delicado), que não só é o símbolo emblemático do Parque Nacional dos Arcos e também do estado de Utah, como é sem qualquer dúvida a mais famosa formação de arcos naturais do mundo!. (This time we wanted to see up close the famous “Delicate Arch”, which is not only the emblematic symbol of the Arches National Park but also the state of Utah, as it is undoubtedly the most famous arches of the world)!.

…a melhor vista vem depois da escalada mais difícil!. (The best view comes after the most difficult climb)!.

…aproximámo-mos!. As pessoas vêm de todo o mundo para visitar o Parque Nacional dos Arcos!. (We’re getting closer!. People come from all over the world to visit the Arches National Park)!.

…é difícil ver “Delicate Arch” da estrada principal do parque!. No nosso caso, de pessoas já com idade um pouco avançada, saindo da nossa “White Fox” (caravana), procurámos caminhar numa trilha com uma distância de aproximadamente uma milha no percurso de ida e volta, com escadas improvisadas em pedra e terra, sem danificar o cenário natural, para termos uma visão previlegiada, sòmente obstruída por um pequeno desfiladeiro!. (It’s hard to see “Delicate Arch” from the park’s main road!. In our case, people of a slightly advanced age, coming out of our “White Fox” (caravan), we tried to walk on a trail of approximately one mile in the round trip, with improvised stairs in stone and earth, without damaging the natural scenery, to have a privileged view, only obstructed by a small gorge)!.

…todavia, principalmente as pessoas mais novas, aquelas que ainda possuiem o previlégio de poderem caminhar sem qualquer restrição, subindo e descendo por algumas trilhas com precipícios, com a distância de aproximadamente 3 milhas no percurso de ida e volta, podem ir até junto do “Delicate Arch”, que sem qualquer dúvida, está no topo das listas de afazeres de muitos visitantes!. (However, especially the younger people, those who still have the privilege of being able to walk unrestrictedly, up and down some precipitous trails, with a distance of approximately 3 miles on the round trip, can go up to next to the “Delicate Arch”, which without a doubt, is at the top of many guest’s to-do lists)!.

…num parque com mais de 2.000 arcos de pedra, este arco independente tornou-se um símbolo amplamente reconhecido do estado de Utah e, como já mencionámos anteriormente, numa das características geológicas mais famosas do mundo!. …este monumento natural, onde a sua abertura da luz sob o arco é de 46 metros de altura e 32 metros de largura, tornando-o no maior arco livre em todo o universo!. …o termo “Delicate” apareceu pela primeira vez num artigo de Janeiro de 1934 sobre a Expedição Científica do Monumento Nacional de Arcos, que o descreveu como “o arco mais delicadamente esculpido em toda a área”!. (The term “Delicate” first appeared in an article from January 1934 on the Scientific Expedition of the National Monument of Arcos, which described it as “the most delicately carved arch in the whole area”)!.

…contentes por finalmente ter o previlégio de admirar de perto esta formação geológica, viajámos para sul pela estrada cénica US-191, que entra no estado de Utah em terra da Nação Navajo, atravessando principalmente as áreas mais desoladas deste estado!. (Glad to finally have the privilege of admiring this geological formation closely, we traveled south on the scenic road US-191, which enters the state of Utah on land of the Navajo Nation, crossing mainly the most desolate areas of this state)!.


…depressa chegámos de novo à cidade de Moab, onde pernoitámos e já aqui mencionámos!. (And we came quickly to the city of Moab, where we tarried, and we have already mentioned it).

…continuando para sul, entrando na área deserta do Spanish Valley (Vale Espanhol)!. (Continuing south, entering the deserted area of the Spanish Valley)!.

…onde pouco depois, já no Canyonlands Country, que quer dizer mais ou menos Terra dos Desfiladeiros e visível a partir da estrada para leste, parámos, para entre outras coisas, admirar o memorial da casa de Albert e Gladys Christensen!. (Where shortly afterwards, already in the Canyonlands Country, which means more or less Land of the Gorges and visible from the road to the east, we stopped, among other things, to admire the memorial of the house of Albert and Gladys Christensen)!.

…em grandes letras pintadas na rocha de arenito vermelho, podemos ler, Hole N”The Rock!. (In large letters painted on red sandstone rock, we can read, Hole N”The Rock)!.

…é um pitoresco lugar com uma histórica casa inigualável esculpida na rocha, onde existem excelentes facilidades, uma loja de presentes incomum e um posto comercial para viajantes!. (Is a picturesque place with an unparalleled historic stone carving house, where there are excellent facilities, an unusual gift shop and a commercial post for travelers)!.

…qualquer viajante ao longo da US Highway 191, no sudoeste de Utah, fica surpreso ao descobrir esta histórica casa, que começou a tomar forma há quase um século pela família Christensen, que começou com uma pequena alcova para os jovens meninos Christensen para dormir à noite e, se transformou numa maravilha da engenharia feita pelo homem!. Tem lareira, 14 quartos dispostos em torno de uns pilares enormes, onde uma banheira profunda construída na rocha encantam os visitantes que visitam esta casa, que quer queiramos ou não, é defacto incomum!. (Any traveler along US Highway 191 in southwestern Utah is surprised to discover this historic home, which began to take shape almost a century ago by the Christensen family, who began with a small alcove for the young Christensen boys to sleeping at night, and turned into a marvel of man-made engineering! …viajando sempre em direcção ao sul, já no condado de San Juan, com uma elevação de cerca de 1850 pés, (565 m), surge-nos o Wilson Arch (Arco do Wilson), que foi assim batizado em homenagem a Joe Wilson, um pioneiro local que tinha uma cabana próxima, mais propriamente em Dry Valley, (Vale Seco)! (Traveling ever southwards, already in the county of San Juan, with an elevation of about 1850 feet, (565 m), appears to us the Wilson Arch, that was thus baptized in homage to Joe Wilson, a local pioneer who had a cabin nearby, more properly in Dry Valley)!.

…esta formação é conhecida como Entrada de Arenito!. Com o tempo, rachaduras superficiais, juntas e dobras dessas camadas foram saturadas com água!. O gelo que se formou nas fissuras, foi derretendo sob o extremo calor do deserto e, os ventos eliminaram algumas partículas soltas, no entanto uma série de barbatanas permanentes permaneceu, onde o vento e a água atacaram essas barbatanas até que, em alguns, o material cimentante cedeu e pedaços de rocha caíram!. (This formation is known as Sandstone Entrance!. Over time, surface cracks, joints and folds of these layers were saturated with water!. The ice that formed in the fissures melted under the extreme heat of the desert, and the winds eliminated some loose particles, but a series of permanent fins remained, where the wind and water attacked these fins until, in some, the cementing material gave way and pieces of rock fell)!.

…continuando na direção sul, cruzámos algumas povoações que, consideramos uma confluência do património pioneiro e o nativo americano, onde por necessidade frequentámos algumas lojas de conveniência, onde compramos bens de primeira necessidade para viajantes, como gasolina, água, legumes, pão ou fruta, com a particularidade de que as pessoas que atendiam eram muito cordiais e atenciosas, falando entre elas um dialecto local, que pensamos nós, devia ser o da Nação Navajo!. (Continuing southwards, we crossed some villages that we considered a confluence of the pioneer heritage and the native American, where by necessity we went to some convenience stores, where we bought essential necessities for travelers, such as gasoline, water, vegetables, bread or fruit, with the peculiarity that the people they attended were very cordial and attentive, speaking among them a local dialect, which we think should be the Navajo Nation)!.

…seguimos viajem adorando estes lugares, sentindo na face o vento do oeste, que nos fazem perceber o quão pequenos os nossos problemas do dia a dia são!. (We continue to travel in adoration of these places, feeling in the face the wind of the west, that make us realize how small our problems of the day to day are)!.

…estávamos quase a deixar a estrada US-191, estávamos na povoação de Bluff, localizada nos povoados escoceses e pouco povoados do estado do Utah, mais propriamente estávamos no planalto do Colorado!. (We were about to leave US-191, we were in the village of Bluff, located in the sparsely populated towns of the state of Utah, but we were actually on the Colorado plateau)!.

…é uma pequena comunidade que fica na margem norte do vale do rio San Juan que, muitos anos atrás alguns colonos, sobretudo dinamarquêses, lideraram cerca de 230 mórmons numa expedição para iniciar uma comunidade agrícola no sudeste deste estado do Utah!. (Is a small community on the north bank of the San Juan River Valley that many years ago some settlers, mostly Danes, led about 230 Mormons on an expedition to start an agricultural community in the southeastern state of Utah)!

…eles, os colonos, depois de percorrer cerca de 200 milhas (320 quilómetros) na sua própria trilha em terrenos difíceis, que foi a área que nós acabávamos de atravessar, que seguia por cima e por baixo do “Hole In the Rock”, chegaram ao local de Bluff cerca do ano de 1880!. …sempre com o pensamento de que o mundo é grande e nós, querendo dar-lhe uma boa olhada antes que escureça, entrámos, na direção sul/oeste, na cénica estrada US-163!. …que segue até ao sul do estado do Utah, entrando pelo norte no estado de Arizona, onde quase toda a sua extenção está dentro do território da Nação Navajo, fazendo parte do Trail of the Ancients (Trilha dos Antigos), e da National Scenic Byway (Estrada Panorâmica Nacional)!. (That runs to the south of the state of Utah, entering from the north into the state of Arizona, where almost all of its extension is within the Navajo Nation territory, forming part of the Trail of the Ancients, National Scenic Byway)!.

…atravessando o coração da área do Monument Valley (Vale do Monumento) e, que tem sido destaque em inúmeros filmes e comerciais!. (Crossing the heart of the Monument Valley area and, which has been featured in countless movies and commercials !.

…entretanto chegámos à área designada como Mexican Hat (Chapéu Mexicano) que, para quem viaja do norte, é visível para leste, sobressaindo do topo de uma formação rochosa, cujo nome, bastante incomum, vem de um afloramento de rocha curiosamente sombrio, medindo 18 m de altura por 3,7 m de largura!. (Meanwhile we arrived at the area designated as Mexican Hat which, for those who travel from the north, is visible to the east, standing out from the top of a rocky formation, whose name, quite unusual, comes from a curiously somber rock outcrop, measuring 18 m high by 3.7 m wide)!

…um pouco em frente, continuando a viajar no sentido sul, aparece o Valley of the Gods (Vale dos Deus), composto por uma série de formações de arenito, altos, vermelhos e isolados, morros e falésias que se elevam acima do fundo do vale e podem ser vistas enquanto se viaja por uma estrada de cascalho de aproximadamente 17 milhas, esculpida ao longo de 250 milhões de anos a partir do arenito Cedar Mesa, onde esta variedade de formações mostra o poder do tempo, da água, do vento e do gelo em ação nesta paisagem desértica!. …este ponto da estrada US-163, no Utah, entre o Chapéu Mexicano e o Vale do Monumento, ficou famoso após o filme Forest Gump!. (This point of the US-163 highway in Utah, between the Mexican Hat and the Monument Valley, became famous after the movie Forest Gump)!.

…está na rota do norte, através de Utah para Monument Valley e é o local onde no filme “Forrest Gump” onde Forrest (interpretado pelo vencedor do Oscar de Melhor Ator, Tom Hanks) terminou a sua corrida pelo país!. (Is on the northern route through Utah to Monument Valley and is where in the movie “Forrest Gump” where Forrest (played by Academy Award for Best Actor, Tom Hanks) ended his race for the country)!.

…muitas pessoas param aqui, esperando a oportunidade em que não passam veículos na estrada, para tirar fotos em diferentes posições!. (Many people stop here, waiting for the opportunity in which there are no vehicles on the road, to take pictures in different positions)!.

…equipas de cinema e fotógrafos professionais, acampam por aqui, esperando oportunidade da luz do sol, do luar da noite, da chuva miudinha ou torrencial, da neve, do vento batendo na ramagem dos arbustos que rodeiam a estrada, ou outra qualquer anomalia da natureza para fotografar ou filmar esta área!. (Filmmakers and professional photographers camp here waiting for the light of the sun, the moonlight of the night, the small or torrential rain, the snow, the wind hitting the branches of the bushes that surround the road, or any other nature anomaly to shoot or shoot this area)!.

…o vale é palco de imponentes formações rochosas de arenito que foram esculpidas ao longo do tempo e sobem 400 a 1.000 pés acima do fundo do vale, combinado com as mesas circundantes, buttes e ambiente desértico, sendo verdadeiramente uma das maravilhas naturais do mundo!. …o mundo conhece melhor esta área, talvez em parte devido ao diretor cinematográfico John Ford, que usou este local para vários dos seus filmes mais conhecidos, protagonizados pelo actor John Wayne, e assim, os seus 13 quilômetros quadrados definiram para o mundo, o que décadas de espectadores pensam, quando imaginam o oeste americano!. …voltando à história deste vale, como é que estas incríveis torres de arenito se formaram? Tal como os Parques Nacionais de Arches e Canyonlands, de que já falamos anteriormente, que se localizam ao norte, o Vale do Monumento, exibe eras do poder erosivo da natureza!. (We live in a wonderful world, full of beauty, charm and adventure, where there is no end to the adventures we can have, only needing to look them with our eyes open and, this iconic symbol of the American West is recognized internationally, having appeared in countless films and today, whenever visitors stop here, even though they pay a ticket, they are treated like guests of honor)!.

…e nós, simples viajantes do mundo, tivémos o previlégio de ocupar um lugar no parque de campismo, mesmo junto ao parque, para poder retemperar forças, para que no dia seguinte possamos continuar com a nossa jornada, recebendo na face o vento do oeste!. (And we, simple travelers of the world, had the privilege of occupying a place in the campsite, right next to the park, to be able to retemper forces, so that the next day we can continue our journey, receiving in the face the wind from the west)!.

…um bom viajante não tem planos fixos e não tem a intenção de chegar, todavia nós, já chegámos a casa, no estado da Flórida!. Respiramos fundo e dizemos, “Bem vindos de volta ao mundo real”!. (A good traveler has no fixed plans and does not intend to arrive, yet we have already arrived home in the state of Florida!. We breathe deeply and say, “Welcome back to the real world”!).

…era já quase noite mas não foi pela calada da noite, foi um pouco cansados mas com alguma alegria que retornámos, podendo de novo ver o nosso jardim, o nosso lar, deixando as estrelas da noite serem a luz que nos iluminaram!. (It was already almost night but it was not in the dead of night, it was a bit tired but with some joy we returned, being able to see our garden, our home again, letting the stars of the night be the light that illuminated us)!.

…foram quase duas semanas onde existiu algum mundo, umas vezes virtual outras real, mesmo real, onde a natureza pura nos foi mostrando, primeiro áreas planas, parques abertos, prados de feno, trechos de rios e riachos, cidades ou pequenas povoações aqui e ali, seguindo sempre para oeste, em diagonal na direcção norte, onde pouco a pouco fomos observando uma atraente diversidade de terrenos montanhosos, alguns densamente arborizados, outros nem tanto!. …saindo, ainda era madrugada, do estado da Flórida, viajámos no sentido oeste, sempre com um cenário plano, numa auto-estrada rodeada de vejetação, onde existiam áreas de descanso, atravessando rios, lagos ou pontes contínuas com algumas milhas de distância sobre áreas alagadiças, cruzando algumas cidades, entre outras, Jacksonville e Pensacola, ainda no estado da Flórida!. (Leaving, it was still dawn, from the state of Florida, we traveled west, always with a flat landscape, on a freeway surrounded by vexation, where there were rest areas, crossing rivers, lakes or continuous bridges with a few miles Jacksonville and Pensacola, still in the state of Florida)!.

…Nova Orleans e Botton Rouge, no estado de Louisiana, onde pernoitámos na cidade um pouco deserta de Scott, deste mesmo estado, onde no momento chuvia um pouco e, não usámos o parque de campismo, pois o valor de um quarto de hotel, era quase o mesmo e ainda éramos contemplados com o pequeno almoço!. (New Orleans and Botton Rouge, in the state of of Louisiana, where we spent the night in the somewhat deserted town of Scott, from the same state, where it was raining a bit, and we did not use the campsite because the value of a hotel room was almost the same and we were still contemplating the small lunch)!.

…deste primeiro dia, tudo foi normal, atravessando cidades que já conhecíamos, com história muito rica, principalmente na cultura da era do descobrimento e povoamento deste imenso país, por alguns navegadores ou corsários, oriundos de países da distante Europa que, navegando no mar das Caraíbas, se aventuravam, entrando no Golfo do México!. …a chuva era contínua, em alguns momento muito forte, tal como um tornado, quando iniciámos a viajem do segundo dia, agora no sentido transversal para norte!. Com a água sempre presente na estrada, mas não odiando a nossa vida por ser interrompida com algum precalço menos feliz, tivémos uma pequena avaria no motor da nossa “White Fox”, (Caravana), que logo resolvemos, continuando viajem, alegres, ouvindo música e falando alto, quase cantando, dentro da caravana!. (The rain was continuous, at some point very strong, like a tornado, when we started the journey of the second day, now in the transverse direction to the north!. With the water always present on the road, but not hating our life for being interrupted with some less happy pre-flight, we had a small fault in the engine of our “White Fox” (Caravan), which we soon resolved, continuing to travel, happy, listening music and loud talking, almost singing, inside the caravan)!.

…continuando sempre chuvendo, entrámos no estado do Texas!. Um dos destinos do nosso roteiro era a cidade de Dallas, onde queríamos visitar o John Fitzgerald Kennedy Memorial, que é um monumento ao antigo presidente dos Estados Unidos John Fitzgerald Kennedy no distrito histórico de West End no centro da cidade de Dallas, Texas!. (Continuing to rain, we entered the state of Texas!. One of the destinations of our script was the city of Dallas, where we wanted to visit the John Fitzgerald Kennedy Memorial, which is a monument to former United States President John Fitzgerald Kennedy in the historic West End district in downtown Dallas, Texas)!.

…foi neste ano de 1963 que nós, ao serviço do então governo colonial de Portugal, fomos arrancados da nossa aldeia, na encosta agreste da montanha do Caramulo, para num improvisado aquartelamento militar de uma cidade próxima, receber um mínimo treino de combate militar, indo parar ao continente africano, lutando na Guerra Colonial Portuguesa, contra pessoas que nunca antes tínhamos visto e nada tínhamos em contra, que lutavam pela liberdade dos seus países, por uma vida melhor, onde os seus filhos podessem ter direito à saúde, à alimentação, à escola, à dignidade e crescer num lar com paz e prosperidade, ou seja, no mínimo terem um farrapo a cobrir-lhes o corpo e pelo menos uma refeição diária, onde o então presidente Kennedy, segundo a história universal, teve um importante papel de auxílio a este povo martirizado, mostrando-lhes o direito à liberdade!. …era já ao fim da tarde, por um tráfico imenso, fomos progredindo em direcção ao norte, onde pernoitámos na, tal como no dia anterior, quase deserta cidade de Decatur, no estado de Texas, com alguma chuva miudinha, num quarto de hotel, onde o preço era quase igual ao de um normal parque de campismo, com a particularidade de termos direito a um pequeno almoço!. (It was already late in the afternoon, by an immense traffic, we were progressing northward, where we spent the night in the almost deserted city of Decatur, Texas, with some small rain in the room of hotel where the price was almost equal to that of a normal campsite, with the particularity of having right to a breakfast)!.


…terceiro dia!. (Third day)!.

…a viajem continuou pela manhã, com sol, estrada livre, áreas planas, campos cultivados com milho, trigo e outros cereais, moínhos de vento produzindo energia, engenhos arrancando petrólio das profundezas da terra, grandes manadas de gado bobino, onde chegámos à cidade de
Amarillo, que é uma cidade no Texas Panhandle!. (The journey continued in the morning, with sunshine, free road, flat areas, fields cultivated with corn, wheat and other cereals, wind mills producing energy, mills plucking oil from the depths of the earth, large herds of bobbin cattle, where we arrived the city of Amarillo, which is a city in the Texas Panhandle)!.

…é uma porta de entrada para o vasto e arborizado Palo Duro Canyon State Park!. O Cadillac Ranch é uma instalação de carros decorados com grafite, parcialmente enterrados em um campo!. Com edifícios arte Déco e Revival Espanhol, o distrito histórico Route 66 (Estrada 66), é um centro para refeições e antiguidades!. (Is a gateway to the vast, tree-lined Palo Duro Canyon State Park!. …onde nós, viajantes aventureiros, viajamos para o cenário da natureza, viajamos para nos perdermos, mas não podemos rejeitar a comida, ignorar os costumes, temer a religião ou evitar as pessoas, pois de outro modo era melhor ficar em casa, como tal frequentámos um típico restaurante local, sobretudo para retemperar forças!. (Where we, adventurous travelers, travel to the scenery of nature, we travel to get lost, but we can not reject food, ignore customs, fear religion or avoid people, otherwise it was better to stay at home, as such we frequented a typical local restaurant, mainly to retemper forces)!.

…continuámos, o fuzo horário atrazava a hora, portanto os dias eram maiores o que nos deu a vantagem de viajar mais horas diárias, podendo assim aumentar a vantagem de poder chegar o mais a oeste possível!. …o cenário era igual ao do dia anterior, onde as montanhas começavam a aparecer, com um tempo magnífico, chegando mesmo ao estado do Colorado ainda a tempo de ocupar um lugar num parque de campismo na cidade de Pueblo!. (The scene was the same as the previous day, where the mountains began to appear, with a magnificent time, even reaching the state of Colorado still in time to occupy a place in a camping in the city of Pueblo)!.

…quarto dia!. (Fourth day)!.

…estávamos no estado do Colorado, o vento do oeste aparecia, o céu era azul, as montanhas eram já ali, algumas com neve!. (We were in the state of Colorado, the west wind appeared, the sky was blue, the mountains were already there, some with snow)!.

…estávamos quase a chegar ao nosso destino, começámos por viajar na Estrada US 50, que no estado do Colorado é uma importante rodovia que cruza a parte baixa deste estado, conectando o declive ocidental com o Front Range inferior e o Arkansas Valley!. (We were about to arrive at our destination, we started by traveling on US 50, which in the state of Colorado is an important highway that crosses the lower part of this state, connecting the western slope with the Lower Front Range and the Arkansas Valley)!.

…esta estrada cénica serve as áreas de Pueblo e Grand Junction, assim como muitas outras áreas menores ao longo de seu corredor, terminando na linha estadual do estado do Utah, paralela à Interstate 70!. (This scenic road serves the Pueblo and Grand Junction areas, as well as many other smaller areas along its corridor, ending at the state line of the Utah state, parallel to Interstate 70)!.

…os desfiladeiros de arenito e os pináculos rochosos são visíveis tanto a sul como a norte da estrada que entra no Vale do Rio Arkansas, que é o segundo maior afluente do sistema do rio Mississippi-Missouri!. (The sandstone canyons and rocky pinnacles are visible both to the south and north of the road leading into the Arkansas River Valley, which is the second largest tributary of the Mississippi-Missouri River system)!.

…perto do início do nosso percurso, a estrada atravessa o rio e, antes da estrada subir e deixar o desfiladeiro, na povoação de Parkdale, que é o lar do rafting, mineração e uma importante área de lazer ao longo deste rio!. (Near the beginning of our trail, the road crosses the river and, before the road climbs up and leave the gorge, in the village of Parkdale, which is home to rafting, mining and an important recreational area along this river! .

…nós, saindo desta estrada por algum tempo, desviámo-nos para sul, entrando na área do Royal Gorge, levando-nos à borda do desfiladeiro e da sua famosa ponte suspensa, que tem 1.260 pés (380 m) de comprimento e 956 pés (291 m) acima do rio Arkansas!. (We, departing from this road for some time, turned south, entering the Royal Gorge area, taking us to the edge of the gorge and its famous suspension bridge, which is 1,260 feet (380 m) long and 956 feet (291 m) above the Arkansas River !.

…foi construído em 1929 e permanece uma atração turística popular que reabriu ao público em 2014 depois que um incêndio devastador destruiu grande parte do parque ao redor em 2013, onde a ponte permaneceu intacta mas, algumas tábuas foram enegrecidas!. (Was built in 1929 and remains a popular tourist attraction that reopened to the public in 2014 after a devastating fire destroyed much of the park around in 2013, where the bridge remained intact but, some boards were blackened)!.

…quase todo o seu percurso é feito perto o rio Arkansas, entrando num desfiladeiro profundo, apelidado de Bighorn Sheep Canyon, onde existem várias pequenas comunidades, entre elas Howard, Coaldale ou Cotopaxi, onde as principais indústrias são a pesca e o rafting!. (Almost all of its route is done near the Arkansas river, entering a deep gorge, nicknamed Bighorn Sheep Canyon, where there are several small communities, among them Howard, Coaldale or Cotopaxi, where the main industries are fishing and rafting)!.

…as montanhas continuam com neve e, lá no cimo, ao cruzá-las, quase todos os veículos, incluindo o nosso, perdem a força no motor, devido à intempérie, tendo que viajar devagar, mesmo muito devagar e, com o motor a quase 3.000 rotações por minuto!. (The mountains are still snowy, and at the top, when crossing them, almost all vehicles, including ours, lose their power in the engine due to the weather, having to travel slowly, even very slowly and, with the motor at almost 3,000 revolutions per minute)!.

…finalmente chegámos ao estado do Utah!. Viajando mais uma vez, agora na estrada rápida Interstate 70, saímos para sul na localidade de Cisco, viajando pela terceira vez na estrada estadual e cénica 128, que tem uma extensão de aproximadamente 72 quilômetros!. (We finally reached the state of Utah!. Traveling once again, now on the Interstate 70 fast road, we head south on Cisco’s locality, traveling for the third time on state and scenic highway 128, which has an extension of approximately 72 miles)!.

…se a felicidade é o objectivo de quase todas as pessoas, e deveria ser, então as aventuras devem ser a prioridade máxima e, nada melhor do que percorrer toda a extensão desta estrada que foi designada como Caminho Cénico Superior do Rio Colorado!. (If happiness is the goal of almost all people, and it should be, then adventures should be the top priority and nothing better than to walk the entire length of this road that has been designated as Colorado’s Upper Scenic Way)!.

…esta estrada, também faz parte do programa da Estrada Pré-histórica do Diamante do Dinossauro, um Caminho Cénico Nacional! (This road, is also part of the program of the Prehistoric Dinosaur Diamond Road, a National Scenic Way)!.

…moradores da cidade do Moabe, onde pernoitámos num parque de campismo, frequentemente se referem a SR-128 como “a estrada do rio”, pois o Rio Colorado, segue a estrada em toda a sua extensão!. (Residents of the city of Moab, where we spend the night in a campsite, often refer to SR-128 as “the river road” because the Colorado River follows the road in all its extension)!.

…ao outro dia pela manhã, saindo da nossa “White Fox” (Caravana), abrimos os braços, prontos para enfrentar o vento do oeste e, despertar numa manhã de sol azul, numa localidade estranha, é uma das sensações mais agradáveis do mundo!. Estávamos no estado do Utah, estávamos cercados de aventura!. (The other day in the morning, coming out of our “White Fox” (Caravan), we open our arms, ready to face the wind from the west and wake up on a morning of blue sun, in a strange locality, is one of the most pleasant sensations of the world!. We were in the state of Utah, we were surrounded by adventure)!.

…vivendo no estado da Flórida, quase cercados pela água do oceano e do golfo, temos duas opções para daqui sair, que são, para norte ou para oeste!. …desta vez, vamos para oeste!. A experiência, talvez pela idade um pouco avançada, diz-nos de que, a terra, o céu, os bosques, os campos, os lagos e rios, a montanha ou o mar, são excelentes professores e, ensinam-nos mais do que podemos aprender dos livros!. Vamos viajar por diversos estados, tentando de novo chegar ao sul do estado do Utah, onde iremos estacionar por alguns dias!. Vamos para oeste, para o misterioso mundo das pradarias, dos desfiladeiros, das planícies, dos monumentos em arenito vermelho, onde existe um vento quente, um vento das terras do oeste, das velhas colinas marrons, onde passam rios no fundo das ravinas, onde se ouve os gritos de pássaros ou uivos de animais selvagens, que não gostam de ver os estranhos invadir o seu território!. (The danger of adventure is worth a thousand days of tranquility and comfort !. …para onde vamos tentar ir, é um lugar, onde quase não existe cenários de uma terra boa e arável, pois é a terra do oeste, quase igual aos corações tão cansados quanto os nossos, onde não florescem aqueles pomares de maçãs, trigo verde, vinhedos ou grama verde e fresca, onde as pessoas podem estar em repouso, ouvindo os tordos cantando, olhando os seus filhotes no ninho, lá naquelas árvores frondosas!. …lá no oeste, quando aparecem, o sol é brilhante e a chuva é rara e quente!. Podemos observar cenários de terras desertas, onde os monumentos de arenito sobressaiem, que foram resistindo por milhares ou talvez milhões de anos, ver os pequenos esquilos ou coelhos bravos, saindo de uma qualquer rocha, aparecendo ao nosso lado pedindo comida ou ouvir as abelhas selvagens, pois naquele momento, esta é uma música para a nossa alma, que esperamos não se transforme em fogo para o nosso cérebro!. (There in the west, when they appear, the sun is bright and the rain is rare and hot !. We can observe deserted land scenarios where the sandstone monuments stand out, which have stood for thousands or maybe millions of years, see the small squirrels or angry rabbits, coming out of a rock, appearing at our side asking for food or listening to the wild bees , for at that moment, this is a song for our soul, which we hope will not turn into fire for our brain)!.

…sabendo que não existe, mas vamos tentar ouvir e sentir, no vento quente do oeste, uma estrada branca, uma grama verde e fresca, um descanso para o nosso coração, porque se queremos saber a verdade de quem somos, teremos que caminhar até que ninguém saiba o nosso nome!. Viajar é o grande nivelador, o grande mestre, amargo como um remédio, mais cruel que um espelho de vidro, onde vemos reflectida a nossa imagem de hoje, comparada como quando éramos jovens e, nada melhor que um longo trecho de estrada para nos ensinar mais sobre nós mesmos, do que cem anos de tranquilidade!. (Knowing that it does not exist, but we will try to hear and feel, in the hot west wind, a white road, a fresh green grass, a rest for our heart, because if we want to know the truth of who we are, we will have to walk until no one knows our name !. Travel is the great leveler, the great teacher, bitter as a remedy, more cruel than a glass mirror, where we see reflected our image today, compared as when we were young and nothing better than a long stretch of road to teach us more about ourselves, than a hundred years of tranquility)!.

…esperemos viajar para lá e para cá, sem qualquer problema que não se possa resolver e, regressar de novo à vossa companhia, para vos contar toda esta aventura com pormenores, daqui a duas semanas aproximadamente!. Até lá, vamos ouvir e sentir o vento quente, o vento do oeste, cheio de gritos de pássaros e uivos de animais selvagens, que não gostam de ver os estranhos invadir o seu território!
