…nesta nossa viajem pelo oeste, sabíamos que iríamos encontrar aqui e ali, a aventura pendurada numa corda, ao lado duma montanha, dum rio selvagem, numa estrada deserta, dentro de uma tempestade, onde 574.156,74… pés de chuva constante, ou 732.489,24… pés, de neve branca e gelada, nos iriam causar algumas dificuldades mas, se na verdade queremos saber verdadeiramente quem somos, temos que viajar até que ninguém saiba o nosso nome!.

…e continuando, acordámos num hotel modesto mas acolhedor na pequena cidade de Red Lodge, onde a tal descoberta de carvão era fácil de extrair, no entanto a sua mineração diminuiu, quase na época em que a “Lei Seca” começou em Montana!. Resultado, o povo sempre engenhoso, começou a prosperar produzindo e vendendo “xarope para tosse” e,  quando a tal “Lei Seca” terminou, Red Lodge novamente se adaptou e sobreviveu, tornando-se um destino turístico, animado e com um cenário encantador, atraindo sobretudo entusiastas da natureza!.

(…and continuing, we woke up in a modest but cozy hotel in the small town of Red Lodge, where the discovery of coal was easy to extract, however its mining declined, almost at the time when “Prohibition” began in Montana!. As a result, the ever-ingenious people began to prosper by producing and selling “cough syrup” and, when the “Prohibition Law” ended, Red Lodge again adapted and survived, becoming a lively tourist destination with an enchanting setting, attracting above all nature enthusiasts)!.

…tal como nós que, devido à chuva e algumas inundações, não tivémos oportunidade de fotografar o cenário de montanha que se pode admirar desde esta pequena cidade, porque ao amanhecer, abrindo a janela do modesto hotel onde dormimos, verificámos que a nossa “White Fox” (caravana), estava rodeada de água que continuava a subir, que felizmente ainda nos deu o tempo suficiente para arrumar as nossas coisas e, tal como outras pessoas na nossa situação, evacuar a região!. 

(…just like us who, due to the rain and some floods, did not have the opportunity to photograph the mountain scenery that can be admired from this small town, because at dawn, opening the window of the modest hotel where we slept, we found that our “White Fox” (caravan), was surrounded by water that continued to rise, which fortunately still gave us enough time to pack our things and, like other people in our situation, evacuate the region)!.

…as chuvas continuaram, que combinadas com o derretimento rápido da neve de final da temporada, inundaram as comunidades próximas e forçou ao fechamento e a evacuação do Parque Nacional de Yellowstone que era o nosso próximo destino, assim como outras atracções próximas!. Dadas as circunstâncias, aplicámos o nosso “Plano B”, que foi alterar o trajecto inicial!. 

(…the rains continued, which, combined with the rapid melting of late-season snow, flooded nearby communities and forced the closure and evacuation of Yellowstone National Park that was our next destination, as well as other nearby attractions!. Given the circumstances, we applied our “Plan B”, which was to change the initial route)!.

…resultado?. Desviando-nos das inundações e outras precipitações, seguimos outra rota, para norte, leste, sul, oeste e norte outra vez, por uma distância de aproximadamente quatro centenas de milhas, levando-nos a cidades e aldeias do estado de Montana e Wyoming, algumas bonitas e acolhedoras mas que não estavam no nosso roteiro!.

(…result?. Avoiding the floods and other precipitation, we followed another route, north, east, south, west, and north again, for a distance of approximately four hundred miles, taking us to towns and villages in the state of Montana and Wyoming, some beautiful and welcoming but that were not on our itinerary)!.

…no entanto, com a ajuda de guardas florestais e de outros viajantes na mesma situação, percorremos ainda parte do nosso trajecto inicial, que incluía a passagem pela estrada que nos leva a um vale glacial, subindo sempre até entrar no planalto de Beartooth, a 10.000 pés de altura com vista para a caldeira de Yellowstone, um projecto dos anos 30, que abriu o acesso à maravilhosa região do Parque Nacional de Yellowstone a partir do nordeste, sendo na época uma impressionante conquista de engenharia!. Felizmente para nós, ela ainda está em bom estado de conservação e é facilmente percorrível, pelo menos nas suas cinco ou seis milhas de ziguezagues!.

…nesta parte do trajecto, vivemos a verdadeira “adrenalina da aventura”, sendo parados frequentemente com avisos de “não podem continuar, existem falhas nas estradas e pontes, deslizamentos de terra e outros problemas, não existe água e energia em algumas áreas, várias secções da estrada foram lavadas pelas enxurradas devido a inundações substanciais, deslizamentos de rochas devido às recentes quantidades de chuvas sem precedentes”!. E nós, ignorando estes avisos continuávamos, porque outros aventureiros, sobretudo motociclistas, também o faziam!.

(…in this part of the route, we experience the real “adventure adrenaline”, being stopped frequently with warnings of “can’t continue, there are faults in roads and bridges, landslides and other problems, there is no water and energy in some areas, several sections of the road were washed away by flash floods due to substantial flooding, rockslides due to recent unprecedented amounts of rainfall”!. And we, ignoring these warnings, continued, because other adventurers, especially motorcyclists, also did it)!.

…deixando o estado de Montana, pernoitámos num parque de RV já no estado de Wyoming, superlotado pelo motivo da evacuação forçada das áreas à volta do Parque Nacional de Yellowstone, repartindo o  espaço da nossa “White Fox” (caravana), por mais dois viajantes de caravanas na mesma situação, onde por gentileza não nos foi cobrada qualquer importância em dinheiro!.

…logo pela manhã, entrámos nas Badlands de Dakota do Norte, que ficam na extremidade das Pastagens Nacionais, onde a pradaria se encontra com as Terras Desertas e, não devem ser confundidas com o Parque Nacional de Badlands da Dakota do Sul, porque estas foram cortados ao longo de eras pelo lamacento Little Missouri River, que flui para o norte!.

…e, quando iniciámos esta viajem pelo oeste sabíamos que iriamos passar por cidades, vilas e aldeias, sobretudo parar em parques nacionais, caminhar, aprender alguns segredos e ter contacto com a natureza pura e a vida ainda selvagem das Grandes Planícies do Norte, como por exemplo o Parque Nacional Theodore Roosevelt em Dakota do Norte, com bisões, alces, cães da pradaria, veados de cauda branca, perdizes, águias ou cavalos selvagens!.

(…and, when we started this trip to the west, we knew that we would pass through cities, towns and villages, especially stopping in national parks, walking, learning some secrets and having contact with the pure nature and the still wild life of the Great Plains of the North, as (for example, Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota, with bison, elk, prairie dogs, white-tailed deer, partridges, eagles or wild horses)!.

…uau…, ficamos um pouco emocionados ao descrever este cenário de natureza quase pura, que é o Parque Nacional Theodore Roosevelt, que se estende ao longo das margens do Little Missouri River nas escarpadas Badlands, no oeste de Dakota do Norte, onde os visitantes tal como nós, têm uma oportunidade única de observação da vida selvagem, solidão e vistas deslumbrantes!.

…este Parque Nacional leva o nome do antigo presidente dos USA , porque ajudou a dar origem ao movimento conservacionista da América, por meio da sua pura força de vontade, ajudando a proteger uma paisagem imponente que é, ao mesmo tempo, desolada mas cheia de vida, onde os bufalos vagam pelas planícies relvadas e os alces vagueiam ao longo de campos cheios de zimbro!.

…tal como os pequenos cães da pradaria guincham dos montes que conduzem aos seus esconderijos subterrâneos e ao leito dos cervos-mulas nas laterais dos montes de argila, como os antílopes e coiotes, cavalos selvagens e ovelhas também selvagens, que nós visitantes podemos identificá-los, bastando sòmente um pouco de paciência!.

Porque devido à sua localização mais remota, poucas pessoas visitam este Parque Nacional, onde encontramos sobretudo paz e, em nada se compara com outros parques nacionais próximos, que também temos intenções de visitar como por exemplo, os Parques Nacionais Grand Teton ou Yellowstone, onde uma multidão de turistas, pelo menos nos meses de verão, são presença constante, e aqui, como acima já mencionámos, ficamos maravilhados com a paz e a tranquilidade que descobrimos, neste maravilhoso parque, muitas vezes esquecido!.

…onde, como acima explicámos, os animais ainda circulam livremente, podendo observá-los caminhando por pequenas trilhas pavimentadas adjacentes aos parques de estacionamento!. Também podemos observar a casa da fazenda de gado Teddy’s Roosevelt que data do ano de 1880, ou fazer uma curta caminhada, tal como fizémos até o deslumbrante River Bend Overlook, ou mesmo ao local onde o Little Missouri River faz uma curva fechada para o leste, que são paisagens que ilustram quadros deslumbrantes!.

…continuando a nossa jornada para oeste, entrámos no estado de Montana, que eram os caminhos dos imigrantes, como a “California Trail”, a “Mormon Trail” ou a “Oregon Trail”, onde muitos anos atrás, caravanas de carros puxados por animais, também por aqui viajavam rumo ao oeste, atravessando planícies, montanhas rochosas ou rios, suportando calor, frio, neve ou chuva, onde muitos eram europeus tal como nós, desembarcados nos portos de Boston, New York ou Philadelphia!.

…dizem-nos que Montana é um dos estados menos povoados do país, geograficamente o leste do estado é dominado pelas grandes planícies, enquanto que o oeste é dominado pelas montanhas rochosas!. O nome do estado provém da palavra  espanhola montaña, que como sabem significa montanha em português, tudo isto por causa da presença das Montanhas Rochosas na região!. Ironicamente, as vastas planícies abertas de Montanha renderam-lhe o cognome de The Big Sky Country (Os campos dos grandes céus)!.

…já era ao fim da tarde quando chegámos à bonita e pequena cidade de Red Lodge, na base de algumas montanhas, cujo nome vem das tendas cobertas de barro vermelho que o povo nativo americano “Crow” usava neste local que designavam de lugar de caça, adoração e descanso, muito  antes de os europeus aqui se estabelecerem!. 

(…it was late afternoon when we arrived at the pretty little town of Red Lodge, at the base of some mountains, whose name comes from the tents covered in red clay that the Native American “Crow” people used in this place they called hunting ground , worship and rest, long before Europeans settled here)!.

…e, tal como muitas cidades no território de Montana, os europeus  foram-se estabelecendo em Red Lodge por causa da mineração!. Em vez do ouro que trouxe hordas de homens na esperança de enriquecerem na parte sudoeste do estado, a descoberta do carvão causou um influxo de homens alemães, italianos, finlandeses, escoceses e irlandeses para trabalhar na mina da Rocky Fork Coal Company!. Nós, quando entrámos na cidade, começou uma chuva forte, quase tempestade, não nos dando oportunidade de acampar no RV parque onde tínhamos reserva, tendo que ir pernoitar num hotel modesto mas acolhedor!.

Instead of the gold that brought hordes of men hoping to enrich themselves in the southwestern part of the state, the discovery of coal caused an influx of German, Italian, Finnish, Scottish and Irish men to work at the Rocky Fork Coal Company mine!. When we entered the city, it started to rain heavily, almost a storm, not giving us the opportunity to camp in the RV park where we had reservations, having to stay overnight in a modest but cozy hotel)!.

…deixámos Dakota do Sul, entrando com alguns choviscos em Dakota do Norte!. Assim, viajávamos próximos do paralelo 48º N, que nos beneficiava aproximadamente de 16 ou mais horas por dia e, com bom ou mau tempo éramos levados numa aventura com um cenário de algumas das paisagens mais bonitas do mundo!.

…porque Dakota do Norte está situado no meio-oeste dos USA, dominado pelas Grandes Planícies, sendo um destino onde os seus habitantes ainda se podem gabar de ter mais maravilhas cênicas do que pessoas!. As estradas são longas, abertas e desertas, com cenários verdes, vermelhos ou dourados, a vida selvagem e os cursos d’água ainda estão quase no seu ambiente natural e as tribos nativas únicas em Dakota do Norte, têm as suas próprias origens, histórias e linguagens, que são distintas e diferentes!.

(…because North Dakota is located in the midwest of the USA, dominated by the Great Plains, being a destination where its inhabitants can still boast of having more scenic wonders than people!. The roads are long, open and deserted, with green, red or gold scenery, the wildlife and waterways are still almost in their natural environment and the unique native tribes in North Dakota have their own origins, histories and languages, which are distinct and different)!.

…e viajando por aqui, verificamos que as Grandes Planícies dão lugar às Badlands escarpadas, já perto da fronteira com o estado de Montana, onde o Parque Nacional Theodore Roosevelt atravessa o rio Little Missouri!. No entanto nós, que adoramos a natureza pura e selvagem, sempre dissémos que as cidades para nós são apenas para se passarem, ou seja, quase parte da nossa rota na estrada mas, quando encontramos uma diferente e agradável, ficamos quase sem palavras e depois, “transforma-nos num contador de histórias”!.

…foi o que aconteceu quando chegámos à cidade de Fargo, visitando o Centro de Visitas onde tivémos algum contacto com a história imigrante da região, que tem uma forte herança escandinava, com um grande descendente de suecos que se mudaram para o meio-oeste, tornando Fargo uma das cidades mais diversificadas da Dakota do Norte e socialmente aberta!.

(…this is what happened when we arrived in the city of Fargo, visiting the Visitor Center where we had some contact with the immigrant history of the region, which has a strong Scandinavian heritage, with a large descendant of Swedes who moved to the midwest, making Fargo one of North Dakota’s most diverse and socially open cities)!.

…dando uma volta pela cidade, ficamos encantados com todas as lojas, restaurantes, templos ou mesmo na área da antiga estação do caminho de ferro, onde ainda se conservam alguns pormenores intactos do que eram, além de murais e outras atividades, algumas ao ar livre, ou mesmo o Museu de Arte das Planícies, onde se exibe arte nativa americana!. E claro, não esquecer a sua especialidade de culinária local, que sendo de descendência escandinava, exibe as suas sofisticadas sanduíches de queijo grelhado!.

…continuando, viajando pela estrada rápida I-94, no sentido leste/oeste, diz-nos que, conduzir pelas estradas de Dakota do Norte é uma abreviação para o tipo mais, ou seja, do mais bonito cenário de estradas desertas de pradarias, porque o estado é plano e escassamente povoado, com grandes distâncias e paisagens maravilhosas!.

…parando aqui e ali fomos apreciando e na pequena cidade de Jamestown, uma pequena cidade de fronteira com vários edifícios originais, colocados juntos para dar vida a uma cidade pioneira ou na cidade de Bismark, a capital, conduzindo a nossa “White Fox” (caravana), fizémos um passeio histórico pela área do State Capitol e do North Dakota Heritage Center, parando num restaurante local apreciando a sua culinária local, que era bife de animal arrassado de búfalo, pelo menos foi o que nos explicou a simpática empregada)!.

…continuando e sempre seguindo a rota ao longo da auto-estrada I-94, que nos oferece alguns dos melhores trechos coloridos das Badlands de Dakota do Norte, com um cenário panorâmico de um dos últimos vestígios de vida selvagem das Grandes Planícies do Norte, cuja abertura é ilimitada, com vistas que se estendem tanto na distância de rodagem, que muitas vezes parece que estamos vendo a curvatura da Terra!.

(…continuing and always following the route along the I-94 highway, which offers us some of the best colorful stretches of the Badlands of North Dakota, with a panoramic backdrop of one of the last vestiges of wildlife in the Great Plains of North, whose opening is limitless, with views that extend so far into the driving distance that it often feels like we are viewing the curvature of the Earth)!.

…e, já próximo do nosso destino para este dia, parámos no Centro de Visitas que se localiza na estrada rápida I-94 já referida, admirando as terras selvagens da parte sul do Parque Nacional Theoodore Roosevelt, na procura de ver bisões, alces, cavalos selvagens e muito mais, neste pitoresco parque nacional que recebeu o nome do antigo presidente que defendeu a sua conservação!.

…até que chegámos à pequena cidade de Medora, uma pequena cidade da Dakota do Norte, com uma grande história que talvez começasse quando um rico francês e sua esposa, por volta do ano de 1883,  construíram aqui uma casa e uma cabana de caça dando lugar a que hoje seja o lar da entrada no Parque Nacional Theoodore Roosevelt que felizmente está aberto o ano todo!.

No entanto, muitos deles só fazem uma paragem no tal Centro de Visitas, que tal como já referimos, visitámos ao passar pela auto-estrada I-94, porque é um belo ponto de paragem com todas as facilidades para quem viaja, mas é apenas uma pequena amostra do que torna este parque especial!.

…ainda no estado de Missouri seguimos na estrada rápida I-70, rumo ao oeste, com longas zonas desertas, quintas, algumas  abandonadas, plantações de milho ou trigo, algumas manadas de vacas, áreas transformadas em zonas de caça, poços de petróleo trabalhando ou moinhos de energia movidos a vento!.

(…still in the state of Missouri, we followed fast road I-70, heading west, with long deserted areas, farms, some abandoned, corn or wheat fields, some herds of cows, areas transformed into hunting zones, oil wells working or wind powered power mills)!.

…em tempos idos esta área era hostil, era território de índios Cheyenne, que não apreciavam a invasão dos colonos brancos, e claro, os ataques tornavam-se demasiado frequentes, chegando ao ponto de cada caravana ter pelo menos 20 ou mais vagões e 30 homens armados!.

(…in times gone by this area was hostile, it was the territory of Cheyenne Indians, who did not appreciate the invasion of white settlers, and of course, the attacks became too frequent, reaching the point where each caravan had at least 20 or more wagons and 30 armed men)!.

…numa época em que o búfalo era o mais importante meio de sobrevivência, tanto para os índios Cheyenne, como para os colonos em trânsito, era o principal motivo de guerras, pois os índios viam nos animais o seu sustento única e simplesmente, controlando o seu abate, que era feito consoante a necessidade, enquanto que alguns colonos, além de sustento, viam o lucro na comercialização da sua pele!.

…nós, muitas vezes, mesmo na estrada, guiando, olháva-mos a paisagem e lá estava a casa, umas em bom estado outras abandonadas, com um pequeno quintal em redor, a cerca em volta do quintal, as vacas pastando e um poço com uma “roldana”!. Em geral as casas eram construídas próximo de um ribeiro ou de um local onde existia água, às vezes eram locais isolados, mas lá estavam as árvores em seu redor, algumas já velhas, talvez da idade da casa!

…tudo isto até à cidade de Kansas City, ainda no estado do Missouri, pois existem duas cidades com o nome Kansas City, uma no estado de Missouri, outra no estado de Kansas, onde depois de atravessar a cidade entrámos em  Kansas City, Kansas, regressando de novo Kansas City, Missouri!.

…rumo ao norte pela estrada rápida I-29, entrando no estado de Iowa, que está localizado na região centro-oeste do país e que se limita-se ao norte com o Minnesota, a leste com o Wisconsin e o Illinois, ao sul com o Missouri e a oeste com o Nebraska e Dakota do Sul!.

…os primeiros “colonos” a instalaram-se na região, por volta do ano de 1833, cultivavam, além de aveia, legumes ou milho, com que criavam algum gado suíno e bobino!. Mais, dizem-nos que os primeiros europeus a explorarem a região que atualmente constitui o estado de Iowa, foram os franceses Louis Joliet e Jacques Marquette, que no longínquo ano de 1673, descreveram a região como verde e fértil!.

…e devia de ser verdade, porque hoje, podem ver-se grandes áreas de plantações de milho ou soja, ao longo da estrada, que fica um pouco mais alta que essas áreas, onde em algumas partes é mesmo alagadiça, produzindo forte nevoeiro, pelo menos pela parte da manhã!.

…para ver o seu museu do Union Pacific Railroad Museum com artefatos que incluem fotografias e documentos que traçam o desenvolvimento da ferrovia e do oeste americano, em especial a construção da ferrovia transcontinental que ajudou em muito a colonização do Oeste!. Aqui, podemos reviver o auge das viagens ferroviárias de passageiros e como o progresso da Union Pacific e dos USA estão inextricavelmente ligados desde pelo menos há 150 anos!.

…e assim entrámos no estado de Dakota do Sul que simboliza, as grandes planícies americanas, grandes plantações de trigo, grandes rebanhos de gado bovino, as montanhas de “Black Hills”, localizada no oeste do estado, onde continuam a esculpir o gigante monumento ao chefe dos “Sioux”, Crazy Horse e onde se abriga a principal atração turística do estado, o Monte Rushmore, onde estão esculpidas os bustos de quatro presidentes americanos, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt e Abraham Lincoln!.

…já por aqui andámos por outras vezes e sempre simpatizámos com este estado e gostaríamos de por cá passar mais tempo, mas tínhamos que seguir viagem, portanto, lembrando os grandes chefes “Sioux”, Crazy Horse e Sitting Bull, o ouro que existia nas montanhas de “Black Hills”, a aldeia de Deadwood, o general George A. Custer, exploradores europeus ou as guerras pelo território entre franceses e espanhóis, que reivindicavam toda a bacia hidrográfica do rio Mississipi e do rio Missouri, bacia esta que inclui todo o actual Dakota do Sul!.

…estes são exemplos da odisseia, da aventura dos colonos a caminho do Oeste, para onde seguiam pessoas das mais variadas origens, procurando novos rumos, para onde alguns levavam na sua mente o tal espírito de aventura, que todos nós temos, que às vezes é só “querer estar onde não estamos”!.

…para estar-mos mais vivos, temos que ter menos medo e, quando começamos a proceder assim, “perdemos algum medo, mas ganhamos uma vida inteira”, porque são estas pequenas coisas, estes pequenos pormenores, como a terra, o céu, os bosques e campos, lagos e rios, as montanha e o mar, que são os nossos excelentes professores e ensinam-nos mais do que podemos aprender dos livros!.

…prosseguindo a nossa rota, deixámos o estado do Tennessee, um estado sem litoral no sul dos USA, e claro, a bonita cidade de Nashville que como anteriormente já explicámos é o coração da música country, pioneiro do rock and roll e dos clubes de blues da Beale Street, a oeste das Montanhas Apalaches onde em tempos habitavam os Cherokees, pelo menos na sua parte oriental!.

…entrando no estado de Kentucky, delimitado pelo rio Ohio ao norte e as Montanhas Apalaches a leste, conhecido entre ouras coisas pelo famoso Kentucky Derby, que é uma corrida de cavalos precedida por um festival!. No entanto, Kentucky também é conhecido pela sua cultura, que além da já mencionada corrida de cavalos, destila um famoso “bourbon”, carvão, tabaco, música bluegrass e, o “Kentucky Fried Chicken do coronel de Kentucky!.

…parámos por algum tempo na cidade de Paducah que está localizada na confluência dos rios Tennessee e Ohio, a caminho de St. Louis, no Missouri, para onde nos dirigiamos!. Visitámos a área da beira-rio, onde existe um museu representando a confecção de colchas, a que chamam de “The Quilt City” que atrai milhares de pessoas!.

…o espírito acolhedor de Paducah pode ser encontrado nos seus bairros à beira-rio na confluência dos rios Tennessee e Ohio, que foram designados como distrito histórico, onde numa época passada, barcos a vapor que atravessavam o sistema fluvial e as suas instalações portuárias eram importantes para o comércio e para o transporte!. Além disso, ferrovias em desenvolvimento começaram a entrar na região e uma fundição para fazer componentes ferroviários e locomotivas tornaram-se o núcleo de uma próspera economia designada por “Rio e Ferroviário”!.

…e assim entrámos no estado de llinois que é um estado do meio-oeste e que faz fronteira com a Indiana a leste e com o rio Mississippi a oeste, sendo apelidado de “o estado da pradaria”, marcado por terras agrícolas, florestas, colinas e pântanos, e onde nos venderam a gasolina ao preço de $5.25 o galão para que a nossa “White Fox” (caravana) finalmente nos levasse até à cidade de St. Louis, já no Missouri!.

…e no Missouri, parámos na cidade de St. Louis, que se situa nas margens dos rios Mississippi e Missouri e tem o seu nome em homenagem ao rei Louis IX, sendo fundada no ano de 1764 como uma vila francesa de comércio de peles e, para nós tem sido um roteiro nas nossas viajens para oeste, tal como há mais de duas centenas de anos e à medida que o país passou a expandir-se em direcção ao oeste, o Missouri passou a ser uma das principais escalas dos emigrantes!.

…o seu cognome é, “Mother of the West”, a mãe do oeste, e nós, estacionando a nossa “White Fox” (caravana), na área portuária, quase sem o notar lembrámos aquele musical “Meet Me in St. Louis”, (encontre-me em São Luis), estrelado por Judy Garland, que se passa nesta cidade e conta a história de uma família que não quer sair da cidade, por uma nova vida em Nova York!.

…não sabemos bem porquê, mas também não queríamos sair da cidade!. Estávamos na área do porto fluvial, que naquela época era o maior porto do rio Mississippi, com a sua população a expandir-se depois da guerra civil Americana, chegando a ser a quarta cidade maior dos Estados Unidos no século desanove!.

…no seu pedestral, tem um museu com motivos do oeste, e exemplificando o que os emigrantes faziam e usavam a caminho do oeste, depois de terem viajado, talvez por anos, no rio Mississippi, vindos dos portos de Boston, New York ou Philadelphia, que depois de saírem de São Luis, levavam outros tantos anos a chegar à Califórnia, ou mesmo ao sul, viajando pela “Santa Fé Trail”, que também era conhecida pelo “Caminho Real”, que era um caminho que os levava às regiões do sul, junto à fronteira do México!.

A sua localização era estratégica para a época, convertendo-se num ponto de partida de exploradores do Oeste Americano e colonizadores que emigravam para Oeste e, hoje quem se aproxime da cidade, mesmo a muitas milhas de distância, pode avistar o “Gateway Arch”, que nos dizem que é o mais alto monumento em solo norte americano!.
