…viagem de 2026!. (…trip of 2026)!.

…o verão está quase a passar, e foi um período para visitas da família que vive no norte, ou seja, foi passado quase em família!. Agora, voltamos a um dos nossos passatempos preferidos que é…, viajar, viajar, viajar, sobretudo de Caravana, porque somos veteranos e usamos um parque de caravanas para passar a noite, cozinhar e dormir em paz, e também porque pensamos de que não há nada como desfrutar da liberdade de uma estrada aberta…, sem ninguém a definir o nosso itinerário, sendo nós os responsáveis por onde ir e quais as paragens a fazer ao longo do caminho, e claro, sem as complicações e a barafunda de um aeroporto!. Em outras palavras, a maior decisão que temos que tomar…, é qual caminho a seguir!.

…summer is almost over, and it was a period for visits from family who live in the north, in other words, it was spent almost entirely with family!. Now, we’re back to one of our favorite pastimes, which is… traveling, traveling, traveling, especially by caravan, because we’re veterans and we use a caravan park to spend the night, cook, and sleep peacefully, and also because we think there’s nothing like enjoying the freedom of an open road… without anyone defining our itinerary, being responsible for where to go and what stops to make along the way, and of course, without the complications and chaos of an airport! In other words, the biggest decision we have to make… is which route to take! 

…ao longo dos anos em que somos viajantes de Caravana, já realizámos algumas das viagens rodoviárias mais famosas, desde a Histórica Alaska Highway, Dalton Highway, Pacific Coast Highway até a clássica Route 66 ou a histórica “Going-to-the-Sun Road” no Glacier Nacional Parque em Montana, no entanto, também existem algumas outras opções altamente subestimadas, e que já realizámos e que devem ser consideradas…, como a Estrada Beartooth, que é a estrada de maior elevação nas Montanhas Rochosas do Norte, e dizem que não é para os fracos de coração, com muitas curvas fechadas, chegando a quase 11.000 pés de altitude!. 

…over the years that we have been traveling by Caravan, we have already done some of the most famous road trips, from the Historic Alaska Highway, Dalton Highway, Pacific Coast Highway to the classic Route 66 or the historic “Going-to-the-Sun Road” in Glacier National Park in Montana, however, there are also some other highly underrated options, which we have done and which should be considered…, such as the Beartooth Highway, which is the highest elevation road in the Northern Rocky Mountains, and they say it’s not for the faint of heart, with many hairpin turns, reaching almost 11,000 feet in altitude! 

…no entanto, este ano, depois de inspeções médicas que nos deram “luz verde”, vamos procurar o silêncio das pradarias, desfiladeiros e monumentos naturais do oeste, ou seja, ver de novo o rio Colorado e seus afluentes na área onde deslizaram por milhões de anos, alguns animais ainda quase selvagens pastando, grutas com desenhos feitos em rochas pelos povos que por aqui habitaram, enfim, muito daquilo que vemos nos filmes de “cowboys” antigos de Hollywood, com aqueles monumentos a sair do solo, que nos parecem feitos por alguém muito habilidoso, mas foi a natureza que os criou e levaram milhões de anos até se formarem como hoje os vimos!. ”Aha’, que descanso”!.

…however, this year, after medical inspections that gave us the “green light,” we are going to seek the silence of the prairies, canyons, and natural monuments of the West; that is, to see again the Colorado River and its tributaries in the area where they have flowed for millions of years, some still almost wild animals grazing, caves with drawings made in rocks by the peoples who inhabited this area, in short, much of what we see in old Hollywood “cowboy” movies, with those monuments rising from the ground, which seem to us to have been made by someone very skilled, but it was nature that created them and they took millions of years to form as we see them today! “Aha, what a rest!”

…a vida vai ensinando em silêncio!. (…life teaches us in silence)!.

…a já longa idade e os anos vividos em três continentes, (dois anos em cenário de guerra), ensinaram-nos que apenas chegámos como visitantes a este planeta a que designamos como Terra e…, não temos escolha, porque iremos um dia partir sem aviso!. Ou seja, na verdade “somos um instante entre o nascer e o partir, somos um sopro no tempo, uma lembrança, que logo vira poeira no vento”!. 

…our already long age and the years spent on three continents, (two years in a war scenario), taught us that we only arrived as visitors to this planet that we call Earth and…, we have no choice, because one day we will leave without warning!. In other words, in truth “we are an instant between birth and departure, we are a breath in time, a memory, which soon becomes dust in the wind”! 

…o ser humano pode construir, conquistar, estudar, acumular riquezas e acreditar que tem o controle de tudo mas…, diante da realidade de possíveis coisas menos boas que podem ser fatais, percebemos como são frágeis as nossas certezas e passageiras as nossas conquistas!.

…human beings can build, conquer, study, accumulate wealth and believe that they have control over everything but…, faced with the reality of possible less good things that could be fatal, we realize how fragile our certainties are and how fleeting our achievements are!.

…como tal, vivam, continuem caminhando, mesmo quando o coração estiver cansado e ninguém entender o peso dos anos que carregam, amem, riam, perdoem e desfrutem a vida, apesar de haver dias em que o sorriso pesa, em que o coração cansa e a alma só pede silêncio mas…, sigam em frente, mesmo sem brilho nos olhos que também é coragem, porque na verdade a alegria nem sempre aparece em forma de riso, às vezes, ela é apenas a força de querer continuar!.

…as such, live, keep walking, even when your heart is tired and no one understands the weight of the years you carry, love, laugh, forgive and enjoy life, even though there are days when smiles are heavy, when the heart gets tired and the soul only asks for silence but…, move forward, even without a sparkle in your eyes, which is also courage, because in truth, joy does not always appear in the form of laughter, sometimes, it is just the strength of wanting to continue!

…a maior ilusão, é viver como se tivéssemos todo o tempo do mundo, porque a vida é breve, e aquilo que hoje nos parece tão importante pode perder completamente o seu valor diante da realidade, porque o tempo passa, o corpo envelhece e…, todas as riquezas ficam para trás!.

…the biggest illusion is to live as if we had all the time in the world, because life is brief, and what seems so important to us today can completely lose its value in reality, because time passes, the body ages and…, all the riches are left behind!.

…resumindo, não somos donos de nada, tudo o que presentemente possuímos é…, passageiro!.

…in short, we don’t own anything, everything we currently own is…, fleeting!.

…o custo de vida aumentou!. (…the cost of living has increased)!.

…hoje estamos tristes!. Porquê?. Porque não é só nós, pessoas de idade avançada, onde para se viver com o mínimo de dignidade, as despesas aumentaram demasiado nestes últimos meses!. 

…today we are sad! Why?. Because it’s not just us, elderly people, where in order to live with a minimum of dignity, expenses have increased too much in recent months!. 

…a isto chama-se inflação, que é um “fenómeno” que presentemente afeta o custo de vida, ou seja, é uma taxa pela qual o preço dos bens e serviços aumenta, afectando praticamente todos os elementos que compõem o custo de vida, desde os produtos alimentares até à habitação!.

…this is called inflation, which is a “phenomenon” that currently affects the cost of living, that is, it is a rate at which the price of goods and services increases, affecting practically all the elements that make up the cost of living, from food products to housing!.

…e como são repartidos esses custos de vida?. Uma grande percentagem do dinheiro que se aufere mensalmente vai para a despesa da habitação, não importa se é dono da casa ou vive de aluguer, porque os preços das casas, os impostos sobre a propriedade, os custos de manutenção, atualizações ou os aluguéis mensais são cada vez maiores!.

…and how are these living costs distributed?. A large percentage of the money you earn each month goes towards housing expenses, no matter if you own the house or rent it, because house prices, property taxes, maintenance costs, upgrades or monthly rents are getting higher and higher!.

…o transporte é a segunda maior despesa, porque ter um carro e licença para o dirigir, significa no mínimo levar em consideração, comprar um carro, pagar um seguro, (que na nossa idade avançada é deveras dispendioso), reparações de manutenção e…, gasolina!.

…transport is the second biggest expense, because having a car and a license to drive it means at least taking into consideration, buying a car, paying for insurance (which at our advanced age is very expensive), maintenance repairs and…, gasoline!.

…agora a comida!. As idas semanais ao supermercado fazem-nos “sufocar” com o aumento dos preços dos alimentos, ou seja, daqueles bens normais para uma dona de casa acender o fogão, cozinhar e colocar pelo menos uma vez ao dia comida na mesa, que aumentaram demasiado nos últimos 6 ou 7 meses, onde por exemplo, uma caixa de ovos grandes custava em média $5,23 em Brooklyn, Nova York, em junho de 2026, em comparação com $4,29 em Denver, mas não na cidade onde vivemos na Florida, que variam entre $5.39 e $7.25!.

…now the food! Weekly trips to the supermarket make us “choke” with the increase in food prices, that is, those normal goods for a housewife to turn on the stove, cook and put food on the table at least once a day, which have increased a lot in the last 6 or 7 months, where for example, a carton of large eggs cost an average of $5.23 in Brooklyn, New York, in June 2026, compared to $4.29 in Denver, but not in the city where we live in Florida, which vary between $5.39 and $7.25!.

…agora os custos da saúde!. Para nós, pessoas de idade avançada, a maior parte das despesas anuais com a saúde é composta por um prémio de seguro, co-pagamentos a médicos, farmácias e hospitais ou outras medicinas de manutenção que se devem ir tomando para quem tiver em atenção os cuidados com a saúde!.

…now the healthcare costs! For us, elderly people, the majority of annual health expenses are made up of an insurance premium, co-payments to doctors, pharmacies and hospitals or other maintenance medicines that must be taken for those who pay attention to health care!.

…e entretenimento não temos nem consumimos bebidas com álcool, a não ser beber água e caminhar, caminhar e caminhar na nossa trilha preferida, porque um ingresso de cinema, um litro de cerveja ou assistir a um jogo de beisebol, tudo isso pode ter um preço exorbitante que as nossas finanças não podiam suportar!.

…and entertainment we don’t have or consume drinks with alcohol, other than drinking water and walking, walking and walking on our favorite trail, because a movie ticket, a liter of beer or watching a baseball game, all of this can have an exorbitant price that our finances could not bear!.

…e finalizando, em Agosto de 2025 ainda havia alguns produtos alimentares a…, $2.99, em Fevereiro deste ano, esses mesmos produtos custavam $4.99, hoje custam $7.99 e…, estamos em crer que antes do Natal vão custar $9.99!. Oxalá esteja errado!.

…and finally, in August 2025 there were still some food products at… $2.99, in February of this year, those same products cost $4.99, today they cost $7.99 and… we believe that before Christmas they will cost $9.99!. I hope I’m wrong!.

…olá família, bem vindos à Florida!. (…hello family, welcome to Florida)!.

…a família é para sempre, mas às vezes acontecem, (principalmente com as crianças), alguns contratempos que normalmente são contornados com algumas conversas de princípios familiares, que costumavam acontecer em torno da mesa de jantar!. 

…family is forever, but sometimes there are, (especially with children), some setbacks that are usually overcome with some conversations about family principles, which used to happen around the dinner table!. 

…porque agora, nestes tempos modernos, os motivos de conversação podem abranger uma dúzia de pessoas de diferentes gerações, com níveis variados de conversa, o que para nós pessoas idosas, até poderá ser errado, mas compreendemos que as palavras em torno de uma qualquer comunicação, estão a mudar muito rapidamente!.

…because now, in these modern times, the reasons for conversation can cover a dozen people from different generations, with varying levels of conversation, which for us elderly people, may even be wrong, but we understand that the words around any communication are changing very quickly!.

…passavam muito tempo na praia e quando chegavam, falavam connosco uns minutos e recolhiam-se no computador, com jogos e conversas numa linguagem incompreensível mas…, adorávamos vê-los com um semblante feliz e despreocupado!.

…they spent a lot of time on the beach and when they arrived, they spoke to us for a few minutes and retired to the computer, playing games and talking in an incomprehensible language but…, we loved seeing them with a happy and carefree face!.

…cremos mesmos que durante este tempo foram felizes, compartilhando connosco boas notícias, nunca nos mostrando coisas alarmantes ou que nos tornassem menos confortáveis e…, nunca houve qualquer problema em lhes dizer: “Ei, o que significa isso?”. Podes nos dizer ou fazer de uma maneira diferente”?.  

…we really believe that during this time they were happy, sharing good news with us, never showing us things that were alarming or that made us less comfortable and…, there was never any problem in saying to them: “Hey, what does that mean?”. Can you tell us or do it differently”?. 

…e isto porquê?. Porque na realidade é que nos entendemos melhor quando estamos cara a cara!. Bem hajam família pela visita e regressem em paz ao norte e com segurança!.

…and why?. Because in reality, we understand each other better when we are face to face!. Welcome to your family for your visit and return to the north in peace and safely!.

…único palácio de milho do mundo!. (…the only corn palace in the world)!.

…estávamos no estado de Dakota do Sul, bem situado no coração dos USA, um lugar histórico, uma verdadeira  “jóia do oeste”, bem conhecido por essa distinção, que para nós, é o lar de algumas das histórias mais coloridas que podemos encontrar no oeste americano, pelo menos para quem não adora apenas uma boa história de pioneiros ou de  sobrevivência!. Porquê?.

…we were in the state of South Dakota, well situated in the heart of the USA, a historical place, a true “west jewel”, well known for this distinction, which for us is the home of some of the most colorful stories we can find in the West American, at least for those who don’t just love a good story of pioneers or survival!. Why?.

…porque além de outras razões, Dakota do Sul está marcado para sempre pela exploração precoce de ”Lewis e Clark”, dos anos selvagens da corrida ao ouro na década de 1870 ou pela determinação e espírito dos primeiros pioneiros, que como milhares de outros, escolheram por aqui se estabelecer e desenvolver a terra para o bem do país e da expansão dos seus territórios!.

…because in addition to other reasons, South Dakota is forever marked by the early exploitation of “Lewis and Clark”, the wild years of the Gold Running in the 1870s or the determination and spirit of the first pioneers, which like thousands of others, chose here to establish and develop the land for the good of the country and the expansion of their territories!.

…iniciando uma rota à volta da estrada rápida #90, que nos havia de levar para Oeste, parámos por algum tempo na cidade de Mitchel, South Dakota, visitando o “Palácio de Milho”, anunciado como o “único palácio de milho do mundo” e, na verdade, o “Mitchell Corn Palace”, é uma arena multiusos!. Este edifício mourisco é decorado com arte cultivada, onde os murais e desenhos que cobrem o edifício são feitos de milho e outros grãos, e um novo design é construído a cada ano, sendo o “Palácio de Milho” um destino turístico popular, visitado por até 500.000 pessoas a cada ano!.

…starting a route around the #90 highway, which would take us west, we stopped for a while in the city of Mitchel, South Dakota, visiting the “corn palace”, announced as the “the only corn palace in the world” and, in fact, “Mitchell Corn Palace”, is a multipurpose arena!. This Moorish building is decorated with cultivated art, where murals and designs that cover the building are made of corn and other grains, and a new design is built each year, with the “corn palace” a popular tourist destination, visited by up to 500,000 people each year!.

…a história diz-nos que no final do século XIX, várias cidades das grandes planícies construíram “palácios de cultivo” (também conhecidos como “palácios de grãos”) para se promover a si mesmos e aos seus produtos!. Como tal, servindo a comunidade da cidade de Mitchel, também surgiu um “palácio de grãos”, que ao mesmo tempo é um local para concertos, eventos desportivos, exposições e outros eventos da comunidade e a cada ano, o “Palácio de Milho” é comemorado com um festival em toda a cidade, designado como, “Festival do Palácio de Milho”!. 

…history tells us that in the late nineteenth century, several cities of the great plains built “cultivation palaces” (also known as “grain palaces”) to promote themselves and their products!. As such, serving the community of the city of Mitchel, there was also a “grain palace”, which is at the same time a place for concerts, sports events, exhibitions and other community events and each year, the “Palace of Corn” is celebrated with a festival throughout the city, designated as “festival of the corn palace”. 

…era já ao final do dia quando pernoitámos num parque de RV, já na cidade de Rapid City, que fica a leste de Black Hills National Forest, no oeste de Dakota do Sul e é conhecida como uma porta de entrada para o Monte Rushmore, a enorme escultura icónica de 4 presidentes dos EUA!.

…it was already at the end of the day when we stayed overnight in a RV park, already in the city of Rapid City, which is east of Black Hills National Forest, in western South Dakota and is known as a gateway to Mount Rushmore, the huge iconic sculpture of 4 US presidents!.
