…fomos ver o festival de Noites de Luzes de 2021-22, que transforma a cidade de Santo Agostinho numa exibição deslumbrante!. São mais de 3 milhões de luzes adornando todos os cantos do distrito histórico!. É absolutamente deslumbrante, dando-nos a sensação de um filme mágico, e de uma maneira fabulosa se sentir aquele momento bom, principalmente  depois de um ano incrivelmente difícil!. 

(…we went to see the festival of Nights of Lights 2021-22, which transforms the city of Santo Agostinho into a stunning exhibition!. There are more than 3 million lights adorning every corner of the historic district!. It’s absolutely stunning, giving us the feel of a magical movie, and a fabulous way to feel that good moment, especially after an incredibly difficult year)!.

…foi lindo!. Muitas lojas, galerias de arte, a maré no canal estava cheia, havia luzes na histórica Ponte dos Leões, os barcos balouçavam na água, tudo num cenário diferente e quase mágico!.

(…it was beautiful!. Lots of shops, art galleries, the tide on the canal was high, there were lights on the historic Ponte dos Leões, the boats swayed in the water, all in a different and almost magical setting)!.

…desde o telhado à entrada das portas, os prédios do centro histórico da cidade brilhavam de luz e alegria onde os turistas deambulavam pelas ruas e vielas de tijolos, procurando um lugar onde podessem descobrir um local melhor para fotografar ou contemplar um cenário diferente!.

(…from the roof to the entrance of the doors, the buildings of the city’s historic center glowed with light and joy as tourists wandered through the brick streets and alleys, looking for a place where they could discover a better place to photograph or contemplate a different scene)!.

…a árvore de Natal estáva localizada no centro da praça da cidade, onde podemos começar caminhando, a desfrutar as luzes mágicas e brilhantes em outras árvores, numa das cidades mais antigas da América, e claro, aprendendo sobre a história da Flórida!.

(…the Christmas tree was located in the center of the town square, where we can start walking, enjoying the magical and glowing lights on other trees, in one of the oldest cities in America, and of course, learning about the history of Florida)!.

…a vista da baía da Ponte dos Leões é a nossa favorita e talvez de muitos outros, assim, tornava-se num local favorito e uma oportunidade garantida para se obter uma boa foto, e claro, estas luzes deslumbrantes refletem a história de mais de 450 anos desta histórica cidade, iluminando uma bela paisagem urbana que, por certo vai ficar para memórias futuras!.

(…the view of the bay from Ponte dos Leões is our favorite and perhaps many others, so it became a favorite spot and a guaranteed opportunity to get a good photo, and of course these dazzling lights reflect the history of more than 450 years of this historic city, illuminating a beautiful urban landscape that will surely stay with future memories)!.

…lendo um folheto no centro de turismo, explicam-nos que a história das Noites de Luzes em Santo Agostinho remonta às suas origens, que começou numa prática tradicional espanhola de exibir uma vela branca nas janelas durante as festas de Natal!. Velas na janela aludem ao fato de que Maria e José não encontraram pousada que lhes desse abrigo!. 

(…reading a leaflet at the tourism center, they explain to us that the history of the Nights of Lights in St. Augustine dates back to its origins, which began in the traditional Spanish practice of displaying a white candle in the windows during the Christmas festivities!. Candles in the window allude to the fact that Mary and Joseph did not find an inn that would give them shelter)!.

…e, quando os espanhóis colocaram velas em suas janelas, eles estavam simbolicamente abrindo o espaço das suas casas e os seus corações para Jesus, refletindo também uma atitude acolhedora, mostrando que os hóspedes são bem-vindos a sua casa!. 

(…and when the Spaniards put candles in their windows, they were symbolically opening the space of their homes and their hearts to Jesus, also reflecting a welcoming attitude, showing that guests are welcome in their home)!.

…nós, por vezes sentimos alguma dificuldade em circular, porque, havia uma quantidade alarmante de tráfego de veículos dos visitantes, dos troleys, ou dos carros típicos puxados por cavalos, sempre cheios com turistas que misturados com os pedestres e muitos dos quais sendo crianças, tornava tudo numa “azáfama”, onde por vezes não era fácil transitar por aquelas calçadas cheias de uma atmosfera mágica da Cidade mais antiga da Nação!.

(…we sometimes felt some difficulty getting around, because there was an alarming amount of traffic from visitors’ vehicles, trolleys, or typical horse-drawn cars, always filled with tourists who mixed with pedestrians and many of whom were children , made everything a “hustle”, where sometimes it was not easy to walk along those sidewalks full of the magical atmosphere of the oldest city in the Nation)!.

…e, nesta avançada idade todos os centavos contam, apesar pagarmos $2.50 à hora pelo estacionamento, o resto…, foi gratuito!. No entanto com todo este movimento, é claramente um gerador de dinheiro para a cidade, e claro, talvez podessem usar um pouco para ajudar os sem-abrigo que vimos por lá deitados em algumas das ruas e vielas mais movimentadas!. 

(…and, in this old age, every cent counts, even though we pay $2.50 an hour for parking, the rest…, it was free!. However with all this movement, it’s clearly a cash generator for the city, and of course, maybe they could use a little bit to help the homeless we’ve seen lying around in some of the busiest streets and alleys)!.

…recomendávam-nos chegar cedo para evitar correrias!. Depois procurar um lugar disponível, explorando ambos os lados do Intracoastal Waterway, (canal de água salgada), que passa perto do lugar onde vivemos!. 

(…they recommended arriving early to avoid rushing!. Then look for an available place, exploring the sides of the Intracoastal Waterway, (salt water channel), which passes close to where we live)!.

…é uma experiência única celebrando a temporada de Festas do Natal, bem ao estilo da Flórida, porque num espaço de aproximadamente duas milhas de ambos os lados, podemos assistir ao desfile de uma flotilha de barcos brilhantemente decorados que iluminam o Intracoastal Waterway,  anunciando o Natal com imagens e música ao estlo desta época festiva, para que os residentes e não só, possam experimentar a magia e a tradição de um evento memorável!.

(…it’s a unique experience celebrating the Christmas Party season, in Florida style, because within a space of approximately two miles on either side, we can watch a parade of a fleet of brightly decorated boats that light up the Intracoastal Waterway, heralding the Christmas with images and music in the style of this festive season, so that residents and others can experience the magic and tradition of a memorable event)!.

…embora já sendo residentes há muitos anos, foi a primeira vez que assistimos a este popular evento de Natal!. É um espectáculo incrível poder ver os barcos passando, as pessoas aplaudindo, tirando fotos, ouvindo a música do Pai Natal, as decorações de alguns com as luzes sentilando e, quando os aplausos eram maiores, apitam aquele som característico dos barcos do mar!.

(…although we have been residents for many years, it was the first time we attended this popular Christmas event!. It’s an incredible spectacle to see the boats passing by, people applauding, taking pictures, listening to Santa Claus’ music, the decorations of some with the sensing lights and, when the applause was bigger, they whistle that characteristic sound of the boats of the sea)!.

…eram milhares de pessoas, alinhadas nos mais escondidos lugares entre árvores e arbustos, algumas empoleiradas em pequenos precipícios, quase em contacto com a água, testemunhando ao longo do canal, as luzes, a música e as decoracões de Natal que os barcos participantes levavam que, saindo da Bacia de Cimmaron, navegavam vagarosamente rumo ao sul!.

(…there were thousands of people, lined up in the most hidden places among trees and bushes, some perched on small precipices, almost in contact with the water, witnessing along the canal, the lights, music and Christmas decorations carried by the participating boats who, leaving the Cimmaron Basin, were sailing slowly southwards)!.

…um pouco fora do contexto, ao assistir a este desfile de barcos bonitos e brilhantemente decorados, sentimos alguma alegria com estas manifestações em época de Natal, no entanto, também nos lembramos que apesar de o mundo ter já feito grandes avanços na superação da pobreza global, pois mais de 1,2 bilhão de pessoas saíram da pobreza extrema, ainda existe uma grande parte da população mundial que sobrevive com menos de US $1,90 por dia!. E, neste momento da maldita pandemia COVID-19 ameaça destruir muitos anos de progresso na luta contra a pobreza ou as desigualdades, e claro, põem em risco o futuro de uma ou mais gerações de crianças!. Oxalá não!.

(…a little out of context, as we watch this parade of beautiful and brightly decorated boats, we feel some joy at these Christmas season demonstrations, however, we also remember that although the world has already made great strides in overcoming poverty globally, as more than 1.2 billion people have been lifted out of extreme poverty, there is still a large portion of the world’s population that survives on less than $1.90 a day! And, at this moment of the damned COVID-19 pandemic threatens to destroy many years of progress in the fight against poverty or inequality, and of course, jeopardizes the future of one or more generations of children!. I hope not)!.

…estamos na época do Advento, que significa “vinda”, “chegada” do Natal e, já vem de gerações para gerações que nos contam que, o povo de Deus esperou por centenas de anos pelo prometido Messias!. Talvez os cristãos modernos aguardem ansiosamente o retorno do Messias para consertar todas as coisas menos boas, que vão existindo por aí!. No entanto, a coisa bonita sobre o Natal é que não se trata apenas de comemorar o nascimento de Jesus Cristo, mas entre outras, a união ou possível reunião das famílias!.

(…we are at the time of Advent, which means “coming”, “arrival” of Christmas, and it comes from generations to generations that tell us that God’s people waited for hundreds of years for the promised Messiah!. Perhaps modern Christians are eagerly awaiting the Messiah’s return to fix all the less good things out there! However, the beautiful thing about Christmas is that it is not just about celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, but among others, the union or possible reunion of families)!.

…porque o sentido de família é um bem eterno que abraça plenamente todas as riquezas que o Natal representa, que podem ser, a união, a paz, a humildade, a alegria ou o amor!. Embora a paz dos crentes em Jesus não significar a ausência de um qualquer conflito, promete em nós a presença da fé e, muitos de nós às vezes vivemos circunstâncias difíceis de suportar e nesses momentos, pelo menos enquanto acreditamos, podemos ter alguma paz que sem o notar, excede qualquer entendimento!.

(…because the sense of family is an eternal good that fully embraces all the riches that Christmas represents, which can be union, peace, humility, joy or love!. Although the peace of believers in Jesus does not mean the absence of any conflict, it promises the presence of faith in us, and many of us sometimes live in difficult circumstances and in those moments, at least as long as we believe, we can have some peace that without the noticing, exceeds any understanding)!.

…a lenda diz-nos que os anjos anunciaram o nascimento do Messias e os reis vieram do oriente para adorar e maravilhar-se de que o Deus do universo se importaria com todos!. Que maravilhoso que isso acontecesse, mas infelizmente assim não é, porque as catástrofes, as guerras ou as pandemias continuam a acontecer!. 

(…legend tells us that angels announced the birth of the Messiah and kings came from the east to worship and marvel that the God of the universe would care for everyone! How wonderful that this happened, but unfortunately it is not, because catastrophes, wars or pandemics continue to happen)!.

…no entanto, chegou a hora de celebrar o Natal e nós ainda andamos por cá e com alguma saúde!. Assim, na véspera do dia de Natal, se acredita nesta lenda, acenda uma vela a Cristo, porque ao reconhecê-lo como uma fonte de esperança, saúde, paz, alegria e amor, talvez crie em si uma força espiritual que o ajude celebrar o nascimento do filho de Deus na terra, com  a tal esperança, saúde, paz, alegria e amor, que é o que desejamos a todos, em especial à nossa querida família e aos nossos amigos!.

So, on Christmas Day, if you believe in this legend, light a candle to Christ, because by recognizing him as a source of hope, health, peace, joy and love, perhaps you will create in yourself a spiritual strength that will help you celebrate the birth of the child of God on earth, with such hope, health, peace, joy and love, which is what we wish for everyone, especially for our dear family and friends)!.

…era verão, viajávamos pelo Canadá, no entanto o dia parecia-nos de inverno, porque nesta longitude do norte, (o paralelo 50 já tinha ficado para trás a algum tempo) e, nas montanhas do Banff National Parque, onde por especial favor tínhamos pernoitado, pois o Parque de RV ainda estava em construção, pela madrugada já havia a luz do dia, por tal deixamos o Parque de RV, entrando na estrada número 93, na direcção norte, passando pelas “Rocky Mountains”!. 

…it was summer, we were traveling in Canada, however the day seemed to us like winter, because in this northern longitude, (the parallel 50 had been left behind for some time) and, in the mountains of Banff National Park, where for we had a special favor, as the RV Park was still under construction, at dawn there was already daylight, so we left the RV Park, entering the road number 93, in the north direction, passing through the “Rocky Mountains”!.

…esta estrada tem muito cenário, também lhe chamam “Banff-Windermere Parkway” ou “Icefields Parkway”, depois de qualquer curva, aparece-nos um cenário, em que temos de parar a nossa “White Fox”, admirar e tirar fotos!. Não é só o cenário de montanha, são os Glaciers, os lagos, a neve sobre as rochas, em alguns lugares entrando na água cristalina, as  florestas ou os  animais selvagens que nos aparecem constantemente!. Enfim, se pensamos demorar 4 horas para atravessar esta estrada, nem em 8 horas se consegue ver o mínimo!.

…this road has a lot of scenery, also called “Banff-Windermere Parkway” or “Icefields Parkway”, after any turn, a scenario appears, in which we have to stop our “White Fox”, admire and take off pictures !. It’s not just the mountain scenery, it’s the Glaciers, the lakes, the snow on the rocks, in some places entering the crystal clear water, the forests or the wild animals that constantly appear to us! hours to cross this road, not even in 8 hours can you see the minimum!.

…a primeira grande paragem foi em Lago Louise, a quem deram o nome, em homenagem à princesa Louise Caroline Alberta, a quarta fiha da rainha Victoria e a esposa de John Campbel, o 9.º duque de Argyll, que foi  Governador Geral do Canadá!. 

…the first big stop was at Lake Louise, named after Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, the fourth daughter of Queen Victoria and the wife of John Campbel, the 9th Duke of Argyll, who was Governor General of Canada!.

…num folheto de informação, dizem-nos que a Canadian Pacific Railway foi fundamental nos primeiros anos do hoje Parque Nacional de Banff, construindo-se o Banff Springs Hotel e o Chateau Lake Louise, atraindo turistas através de publicidade extensiva!. No início do século 20, algumas estradas foram construídas em Banff, talvez por causa de ascessos previligiados relacionados com a Primeira Guerra Mundial, e também por meio de projetos de obras públicas na era da Grande Depressão!. 

…in an information leaflet, we are told that the Canadian Pacific Railway was instrumental in the early years of today’s Banff National Park, building the Banff Springs Hotel and Chateau Lake Louise, attracting tourists through extensive advertising !. In the early 20th century, some roads were built in Banff, perhaps because of privileged accesses related to the First World War, and also through public works projects in the era of the Great Depression!.

…no entanto, desde a década de 1960, as acomodações do parque estão abertas o ano todo, com visitas anuais a Banff aumentando para mais de 5 milhões na década de 1990!. Milhões de viajantes, tal como nós, passam pelo parque na Trans-Canada Highway, e o hoje Park Nacional de Banff, recebe mais de três milhões de visitantes anualmente, tornando a saúde de seu ecossistema ameaçada!.

…however, since the 1960s, the park’s accommodations have been open year-round, with annual visits to Banff increasing to over 5 million in the 1990s !. Millions of travelers, like us, pass through the park on the Trans-Canada Highway, and the now Banff National Park, receives more than three million visitors annually, making the health of its ecosystem threatened!.

…mas voltando ao Lago Louise, que nos dizem que é um dos lagos mais visitados do mundo, a seu lado está o emblemático hotel  Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, que normalmente aparece em fotos, no cinema, na televisão, revistas ou em livros de romance, sempre rodeado por algumas montanhas, onde se destaca o Victoria Glacier, e claro, o já citado lago com cor esmeralda, cintilante e também magestoso!.  

…but returning to Lake Louise, which tells us that it is one of the most visited lakes in the world, beside it is the emblematic Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise hotel, which usually appears in photos, in the cinema, on television, magazines or in books of romance, always surrounded by some mountains, where the Victoria Glacier stands out, and of course, the aforementioned emerald lake, sparkling and also majestic!.

…este emblemático hotel Faimont Chateau Lake Louse, é património Mundial da UNESCO e, originalmente foi construído como base para os entusiastas ao ar livre e alpinistas, há mais de 100 anos, agora oferece inúmeras actividades recreativas ao ar livre, incluindo caminhadas, canoagem, passeios a cavalo, pesca, bicicleta de mountanha ou rafting!. Nós, preciámos este maravilhoso local, tirámos fotos e vamos recordá-lo pelo resto das nossas vidas, como um local muito especial!.

…this emblematic Faimont Chateau Lake Louse hotel is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and, originally built as a base for outdoor enthusiasts and climbers, over 100 years ago, now offers numerous outdoor recreational activities, including hiking, canoeing, horseback riding, fishing, mountain biking or rafting!. We, precious this wonderful place, took pictures and we will remember it for the rest of our lives, as a very special place!.

…também passámos pelo Lago Moraine, que fica localizado a algumas  milhas do Lago Louise, que nos oferece uma vista panorâmica do Vale dos Dez Picos!. Esta cena foi retratada no verso das notas de 20 dólares do Canadá, na série de 1969-1979 “Scenes of Canada”!.

…we also passed Lake Moraine, which is located a few miles from Lake Louise, which offers a panoramic view of the Valley of the Ten Peaks!. This scene was depicted on the back of Canada’s $20 banknotes, in the 1969-1979 series “Scenes of Canada”!.

…seguindo em direção ao norte, atravéz duma região com um cenário de  montana, onde as florestas são dominadas pelo pinheiro em altitudes mais baixas, com lagos e riachos correndo revoltosos aqui e ali e, se olhar-mos para cima da linha das árvores, admiramos principalmente rochas e gelo, que lá deve de estar talvez à milhares de anos!. 

…heading north, through a region with a mountain backdrop, where forests are dominated by pine trees at lower altitudes, with lakes and streams running riotous here and there and, if we look up the line of trees, we mainly admire rocks and ice, which must have been there for thousands of years!.

…e estrada tem duas vias, uma em cada sentido, dividida ao meio por aquelas marcas amarelas, que quase todos os condutores conhecem mas, de tantos em tantos quilómetros, tem pistas de passagem ocasionais!. Isto  minimiza o atrazo nas viaturas que rolam mais devagar para os seus ocupantes apreciarem melhor o cenário!.

…and the road has two lanes, one in each direction, divided in half by those yellow marks, which almost all drivers know, but every so often, there are occasional lanes !. This minimizes the delay in vehicles that roll more slowly for its occupants to better appreciate the scenery!.

…que é constante, com o aparecimento de mamíferos como o urso pardo, o puma, o alce ou o carneiro selvagem, além de centenas de espécies de aves, que vivem por ali, naquelas montanhas formadas a partir de rochas sedimentares que foram empurradas para o leste por estratos rochosos mais recentes, entre 80 e 55 milhões de anos atrás, pois talvez nos últimos milhões de anos, as geleiras cobriram a maior parte do parque, mas hoje são encontradas apenas nas encostas das montanhas, embora incluam o Columbia Icefield, a maior massa glacial ininterrupta das Montanhas Rochosas, onde a erosão da água e do gelo esculpiu as montanhas nas suas formas atuais!.

…which is constant, with the appearance of mammals such as the brown bear, puma, elk or wild sheep, in addition to hundreds of species of birds that live there, in those mountains formed from sedimentary rocks that were pushed eastward by more recent rock strata, between 80 and 55 million years ago, as perhaps in the last million years, glaciers covered most of the park, but today are found only on mountain slopes, although they include Columbia Icefield, the largest uninterrupted glacial mass in the Rocky Mountains, where erosion of water and ice has sculpted the mountains in their current forms!.

…wow, wow, wow,… tanta história da natureza para ainda hoje se poder admirar e, quando vimos muitos veículos parados na berma da estrada, é certo que estão apreciando algum animal selvagem, que resolveu atravessar a sua estrada, pois o local é deles, ou então resolveu vir “mostrar-se”!.

…wow, wow, wow, … so much history of nature to still be able to admire today and, when we saw many vehicles stopped at the side of the road, it is certain that they are enjoying some wild animal, that decided to cross its road, because the place is theirs, or else decided to come “show up”!.

…a maldição de um veterano de guerra, é que nunca esquece!. Contudo, já o dissémos em algumas vezes, o mêdo ou talvez coragem que nos ajudou a sobreviver num campo de batalha, não funciona muito bem agora nesta avançada idade, mas ainda vai sendo possível assumir o control dessa horrível vivência e, vamos continuando a expulsar alguma energia positiva que nos resta, daquela que nos foi roubada, pelo desastre da Guerra Colonial Portuguesa, em África!.

(…the curse of a war veteran is that he never forgets!. However, as we have said a few times, the fear or perhaps courage that helped us survive on a battlefield does not work very well now at this advanced age, but it is still possible to take control of this horrible experience and, we will continue to expel some positive energy that we have left, that which was stolen from us, by the disaster of the Portuguese Colonial War in Africa)!.

…nós jovens, oriundos da Europa, com uma educação de aldeia, onde os princípios honestos de família vinham de há séculos, vendo todo este cenário, muitas vezes a angústia, o desespero e o medo, colocáva-nos numa situação horrível, onde entre outras coisas o álcool, nos aliviava a mente, pelo menos por momentos, pois este cenário estava lá, estava sempre presente, era a cara da guerra, com feridos e mortos em combate para ambos os lados, incluindo a população civil desarmada!. 

(…we young people from Europe, with a village upbringing, where honest family principles came from centuries ago, seeing this whole scenario, often the anguish, despair and fear, put us in a horrible situation, where among other things alcohol soothed our minds, at least for a moment, for this scenario was there, it was always present, it was the face of war, with wounded and dead in combat for both sides, including the unarmed civilian population)!.

…hoje vamos contar-vos a história de um companheiro combatente a quem carinhosamente chamávamos “O Marafado”!.

(…today we are going to tell you the story of a fellow combatant whom we affectionately called “O Marafado”)!.

…em Portugal, na vila onde vivia na costa do oceano Atlântico na província do Algarve, andava com o seu pai e o irmão mais novo ao mar!. Uns dias dava boa pescaria outros não dava, mas isso não era o importante, porque no fim do dia continuavam a beber na taverna do “Manhoso”!. Se houvesse dinheiro, pagavam e ofereciam um copo ao próprio “Manhoso”, se não houvesse dinheiro, mandavam apontar no livro!.

(…In Portugal, in the village where he lived on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean in the Algarve province, he walked with his father and younger brother to sea!. Some days it was good fishing, others it wasn’t, but that wasn’t the important thing, because at the end of the day they continued to drink at the “Manhoso” tavern!. If there was money, they paid and offered a glass to “Manhoso” himself, if there was no money, they had it pointed out in the book)!.

…no verão, quando o circo visitava a vila, ele ia ajudar a montar a tenda e ficava por ali, gostavam dele, pois além de ajudar era uma espécie de comunicador entre a população da vila e o pessoal do circo!. Ensinavam-lhe algumas habilidades e truques mágicos com que nos deliciava!. 

(…in the summer, when the circus visited the village, he would help set up the tent and stay there, they liked him, because besides helping he was a kind of communicator between the village population and the circus people!. They taught him some skills and magic tricks with which he delighted us)!.

…carinhosamente foi baptizado com o nome de guerra “O Marafado”, porque cantava uns fados de tal maneira desafinados, que não se podiam ouvir!. Bebia vinho e fumava cigarros “Três Vintes”, era pequeno na estatura e moreno, talvez por andar sempre sem camisa!. Sendo oriundo do Algarve, em certa medida era comunicador e tinha alguma alegria mas, depois da cena que presenciou, com a morte de uns prisioneiros, que depois de mortos, ele e nós próprios, sempre ficámos com a ideia de que foram queimados e enterrados numa vala!. A partir desse momento, tanto ele como nós, mas mais ele, (porque foi ele que veio junto de nós dizer que que tinha visto), nunca mais foi o mesmo!. Cumpria as suas obrigações, nunca largava o seu rádio portátil, falava quando era necessário, evitava os contactos e conversas, vivia no seu mundo de silêncio e, alguns companheiros diziam-lhe: “O Marafado, já está apanhado pelo clima”!

(…affectionately he was baptized with the war name “O Marafado”, because he sang fados in such an out-of-tune way that they couldn’t be heard!. He drank wine and smoked “Três Vintes” cigarettes, he was small in stature and dark, perhaps because he was always shirtless!. …nós sabíamos o motivo do seu silêncio, mas sempre respeitámos e compreendemos a sua atitude!.

…algumas conversas que mantinha connosco dizia: “Não sou pessoa de estar aqui preso, não sou “pássaro de gaiola”, preciso de ver o mar, fui pescador, isto está a matar-me aos poucos, o silêncio faz-me algum bem, pois fecho os olhos e penso na praia e no mar azul que deixei!. Quando vou para o mato, para mim, às vezes é bom, vejo a água dos rios e pântanos, e o verde das matas!. Estou aos poucos a odiar isto e também Portugal, assim que regressar, se regressar, vou fugir, vou emigrar”!. 

(…some conversations he had with us said: “I’m not a person to be stuck here, I’m not a “cage bird”, I need to see the sea, I was a fisherman, this is killing me little by little, the silence does me some good, because I close my eyes and think about the beach and the blue sea that I left behind!. …estas palavras eram ditas com convicção de quem sabe o que quer, eram directas, não admitiam argumentos e terminava quase sempre dizendo: “Não falo, e quem me proibiu foi Portugal ao matar aqueles desgraçados a “sangue frio”, durante os interrogatórios!. Só tu e eu é que sabemos a verdade”!.

…muitas vezes nos questionou se conheciamos algum contacto para fugir e “ir no mato”, mas sempre lhe dissémos para tentar sobreviver e que iria regressar a Portugal!.

…mais tarde encontrámo-lo aqui na diáspora quando vivíamos no norte!. Convivemos com ele e com a sua família durante o tempo em que vivemos na mesma cidade!.

…guardámos a sua história, que é a história de mais um emigrante que abandonou o sol de Portugal “à beira mar plantado”, para ir para o frio, à aventura, primeiro sózinho, depois mandou vir a família, na procura de um futuro que lhe desse algum bem-estar e o fizesse esquecer a guerra, o fizesse esquecer as martirizadas vilas africanas de Mansoa, Olossato, Mansabá, Bissorã, a África, com chão de terra vermelha, que como tantos de nós, nunca esquecemos e que trazemos sempre dentro de nós!.

…na nossa última publicação dissémos entre outras que, “vamos para sul, porque o mundo é grande e queremos dar-lhe uma boa olhada antes que escureça”!. Porquê?. Porque não queremos chegar ao fim da nossa vida e achar que apenas vivemos o seu comprimento, queremos também ter vivido a sua largura”!.

…assim parámos por algum tempo na costa da Carolina do Sul, onde no final do século dezasseis, princípio do século dezassete, a pirataria floresceu, sendo mesmo considerada a “Idade de Ouro da Pirataria” e, a hoje atraente e acolhedora cidade de Charleston, logo se tornou naquela época o principal porto da Carolina do Sul!.

(…so we stopped for a while on the coast of South Carolina, where in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century piracy flourished, being even considered the “Golden Age of Piracy” and the now attractive and welcoming city of Charleston , soon became at that time the main port of South Carolina)!.

…foi uma região contestada por espanhóis, franceses e ingleses nas guerras, algumas navais, frequentes na época!. Entre os piratas mais notórios que navegavam ao largo da Carolina do Sul estavam o Barba Negra ou o Stede Bonnet, que trouxeram uma frota de quatro navios com cerca de sessenta canhões para bloquear o porto, saqueando bens e espécies!.

(…was a region contested by the Spaniards, French and English in wars, some naval, frequent at the time!. Among the most notorious pirates sailing off South Carolina were the Blackbeard or the Stede Bonnet, who brought in a fleet of four ships with about sixty guns to blockade the harbor, plundering goods and species)!

…as façanhas desses verdadeiros bandidos do mar que então vagueavam pelas ruas de Charleston, alguns também lançaram ataques contra outras aldeias costeiras, onde o governo de então costumava ser fraco e às vezes era chefiado por funcionários corruptos, assim, os “piratas”, iam prosperando num cenário tão incerto e turbulento!.

…no crescente comércio de Charleston, tal como em quase todas as então colónias, os comerciantes estavam acostumados a lidar com contrabandistas, portanto, recebiam com prazer os produtos baratos e as espécies que os “piratas“ traziam e hoje, mesmo não tendo nada a ver com a história, nós, cidadãos normais e curiosos que simplesmente queríamos visitar a cidade, sofremos no corpo e na alma o preço elevado, (quase o dobro) pago por uma noite num hotel nos subúrdios da cidade, entre outras!.

(…in Charleston’s growing trade, as in almost all the colonies then, merchants were used to dealing with smugglers, so they welcomed the cheap goods and species that the “pirates” brought and today, even though they had nothing to to see with history, we, normal and curious citizens who simply wanted to visit the city, suffered in body and soul the high price (almost double) paid for a night in a hotel in the suburbs of the city, among others)!.

…este último “desabafo”, não tem mesmo nada a ver com as cidades ou locais por onde andámos onde as pessoas eram acolhedores e em algumas áreas mantêm as ruas, casas ou monumentos tal como naquela época, portanto atraentes aos nossos olhos, lembrando-nos a sua história mas, damos como exemplo que pagámos $9.00 para entrar na ilha de Sea Pines, $4.50 para subir ao farol de Harbour Town, com apenas 114 degraus e, pagámos $2.00 por um simples carimbo no nosso livro que marca as paragens em lugares históricos que visitamos, o que em normais situações e em outros locais, nós cidadãos reformados…, era de graça!.
