…A cidade de Fairbanks, Alaska!. (The city of the Fairbanks, Alaska)!.

…quando acordámos o céu estava simplesmente mágico mas…, em pouco tempo fico tudo enevoado, era normal, estávamos lá no norte perto do Ártico, na cidade de Fairbanks!. Pensamos que Fairbanks talvez seja a segunda maior cidade do Alaska, mas não é uma metrópole!. Este “posto avançado” no interior do Alaska não é uma cidade grande mas é uma grande atração!. Porquê?. Porque entre outras, um qualquer viajante tal como nós, aqui se pode organizar, reabastecer e seguir para norte, até à zona do Circulo Ártico, tal como já fizemos em expedições anteriores, e agora…, será o foco de pelo menos um dia da nossa viagem pelo Alaska!.

…when we woke up the sky was simply magical but…, in a short time everything became misty, it was normal, we were there in the north near the Arctic, in the city of Fairbanks!. We think that Fairbanks may be the second largest city in Alaska, but it is not a metropolis!. This “outpost” in the interior of Alaska is not a big city but it is a big attraction! Why?. Because among others, any traveler like us can organize, resupply and head north to the Arctic Circle area, as we have done on previous expeditions, and now…, it will be the focus of at least one day of the our trip through Alaska!.

…e tudo bem, porque há pelo menos um dia de coisas para ver e fazer!. 

…continuando, era manhã cedo, quando deixámos o parque de RV e…, qualquer visita à cidade de Fairbanks deve começar pela área do Centro de Visitantes, localizado no que é certamente o edifício mais bonito do centro de Fairbanks!. Este lugar é muito mais do que um centro de boas-vindas, porque também é um excelente museu, que conta a história da vida no interior do Alaska!. As exposições ilustram as estações, desta vez, o verão, onde a pesca é o grande foco!. Aviões pequenos são uma grande parte dessa vida, e encontramos um pairando lá no alto, prendido no tecto do edifício!. 

…and that’s okay, because there’s at least a day’s worth of things to see and do!. 

…continuing, it was early in the morning when we left the RV park and…, any visit to the city of Fairbanks should begin with the Visitor Center area, located in what is certainly the most beautiful building in downtown Fairbanks!. This place is much more than a welcome center, because it is also an excellent museum, which tells the story of life in the interior of Alaska!. The exhibitions illustrate the seasons, this time summer, where fishing is the main focus! Small planes are a big part of that life, and we found one hovering high above, attached to the roof of the building!. 

…está situado na área do “Golden Heart Plaza”, que se encontrava repleta de flores de todas as cores!. Também lá estava uma torre do relógio, doada pelo Fairbanks Rotary Club em 1990, comemorando os primeiros cinquenta anos de serviço desta organização a Fairbanks e ao Interior, tal como um marcador de milhas que proclamava o centro da cidade e…, partir dali, eram 4.940 milhas até à cidade de Lisboa emPortugal, país onde nascemos, e 5.312 milhas até ao estado da Florida, onde presentemente vivemos!.

…it is located in the “Golden Heart Plaza” area, which was full of flowers of all colors!. Also there was a clock tower, donated by the Fairbanks Rotary Club in 1990, commemorating the organization’s first fifty years of service to Fairbanks and the Interior, as was a mile marker that proclaimed the center of the city and… from there, they were 4,940 miles to the city of Lisbon in Portugal, the country where we were born, and 5,312 miles to the state of Florida, where we currently live!.

…mas o que desperta a atenção é sem qualquer dúvida…, a estátua circundada por uma fonte de água, da “Primeira Família Desconhecida” de Malcolm Alexander, que homenageia principalmente o “povo Inuit” que viveu aqui muito antes da chegada dos colonos modernos, e que em suas palavras está “Retratando a família de toda a humanidade, a família de Fairbanks e a família nuclear!. Deixe esta estátua simbolizar, para as famílias presentes e futuras, o orgulho e a dignidade de esta grande terra”!. Outra curiosidade é que, uma cápsula do tempo, a ser inaugurada em 3 de janeiro de 2059, está enterrada nesta Plaza!.

…but what attracts attention is without a doubt…, the statue surrounded by a water fountain, of the “First Unknown Family” by Malcolm Alexander, which mainly pays homage to the “Inuit people” who lived here long before the arrival of modern settlers , and which in his words is “Portraying the family of all humanity, the Fairbanks family and the nuclear family!. Let this statue symbolize, for present and future families, the pride and dignity of this great land”!. Another curiosity is that a time capsule, to be inaugurated on January 3, 2059, is buried in this Plaza!

…na mesma área do “Golden Heart Plaza”, está o edifício Lacey Street Theatre, agora abrigando o Fairbanks Ice Museum, que é um teatro dedicado a todas as coisas relacionadas ao gelo!. Visitámos este museu que nos mostra o clima de inverno, independentemente das temperaturas do verão!. Apreciámos várias exibições de gelo, num local onde se pode entrar para sentir que estamos a 20 graus abaixo de zero, vendo uma enorme coleção de figuras de arte no gelo!. Algumas esculturas iam-se derretendo e estavam quebradas!. O preço é um pouco alto pelo que é, mas provavelmente custa muito manter a área resfriada o suficiente!.

…in the same area as the “Golden Heart Plaza”, is the Lacey Street Theater building, now housing the Fairbanks Ice Museum, which is a theater dedicated to all things ice related!. We visited this museum that shows us the winter climate, regardless of summer temperatures! We enjoyed several ice exhibits, in a place where you can enter to feel like you are 20 degrees below zero, seeing a huge collection of ice art figures!. Some sculptures were melting and were broken! The price is a little high for what it is, but it probably costs a lot to keep the area cool enough!.

…um pouco para oeste/norte da cidade, visitámos o Museu do Norte da Universidade do Alaska, onde podemos apreciar histórias fascinantes sobre as pessoas, os lugares e a vida selvagem do Alaska nas excelentes galerias de exposições deste fabuloso museu, na sua melhor introdução a este vasto e diversificado estado!. Desde a vida selvagem do Alaska até à arte contemporânea dos nativos do Alaska, qualquer que seja o nosso interesse, encontramos algo atraente em exposição!.

…a little west/north of the city, we visited the University of Alaska Museum of the North, where we can enjoy fascinating stories about the people, places and wildlife of Alaska in the excellent exhibition galleries of this fabulous museum, at its best introduction to this vast and diverse state!. From Alaskan wildlife to contemporary Alaska Native art, whatever our interest, we’ll find something compelling on display!

…sem qualquer dúvida que nos mostra muitos tesouros que antes estavam armazenados, mas agora estão à vista do público!. As galerias apresentam quase toda a arte nativa do Alaska, desde antigas esculturas de marfim dos esquimós até às pinturas e esculturas contemporâneas, tanto nativas quanto não-nativas!. Os destaques incluem a maior exibição de ouro do Alaska, extensas exibições de arte e artefactos nativos do Alaska e a única múmia restaurada de bisão das estepes da Idade do Gelo do mundo!. Neste museu está parte da explicação com linhas e espaços inovadores que evocam imagens de cordilheiras alpinas, geleiras, ruptura do rio Yukon, onde podemos descobrir as culturas nativas do Alasca, as maravilhas naturais, a vida selvagem diversificada e os dinossauros do Ártico!. 

…without any doubt it shows us many treasures that were previously stored, but are now on public view! The galleries feature almost all Alaska Native art, from ancient Eskimo ivory carvings to contemporary paintings and sculptures, both native and non-native!. Highlights include Alaska’s largest gold display, extensive displays of Alaska Native art and artifacts, and the world’s only restored Ice Age steppe bison mummy! In this museum is part of the explanation with innovative lines and spaces that evoke images of alpine ranges, glaciers, breaking of the Yukon River, where we can discover Alaska’s native cultures, natural wonders, diverse wildlife and Arctic dinosaurs!. 

…a nosso pedido, uma simpática funcionária deste museu, mostrou-nos um pequeno filme, explicando-nos que o hoje histórico autocarro 142, com aquela pintura enferrujada, verde e branca, manchada com manchas amarelas da camada de tinta mais antiga aparecendo, com o seu teto arredondado e os seus para-lamas bulbosos, com aquelas letras pretas: FAIRBANKS CITY TRANSIT SYSTEM, que é uma das “estrelas” do filme “Into the Wild, que tem Sean Penn como director!. Está aqui a ser reparado de acordo com fotografias que foram coletadas e organizadas em ordem cronológica, para os conservadores e o pessoal do museu, poderem no futuro provar ser um recurso inestimável do original, e que quando terminado, vai ser exposto no parque junto a este Museu!.

…at our request, a friendly employee of this museum, showed us a short film, explaining to us that the now historic bus 142, with that rusty, green and white paintwork, stained with yellow stains from the oldest layer of paint appearing, with its rounded roof and its bulbous fenders, with those black letters: FAIRBANKS CITY TRANSIT SYSTEM, which is one of the “stars” of the film “Into the Wild, which has Sean Penn as director!. It is here being repaired according to photographs that were collected and organized in chronological order, so that conservators and museum staff can in the future prove to be an invaluable resource of the original, and when finished, it will be displayed in the park next to this Museum!.

…Grande Denali ou Monte McKinley, Alaska!. (…Great Denali or Mount McKinley, Alaska)!.

… já em expedições anteriores tínhamos conduzido a nossa “White Fox” (caravana) até onde era autorizado no Parque Denali!. Isto era uma coisa, no entanto viajar para dentro do parque, era outra!. Porquê?. Porque a estrada que nos leva ao Parque Denali é uma das estradas mais bonitas onde provavelmente já viajamos!. Ela mergulha em algumas milhas na natureza selvagem do Alaska e…, ao conseguirmos chegar cada vez mais perto do Grande Denali, ou Monte McKinley,se preferirem, a montanha mais alta dos USA, é quase certo que vamos ter alguns encontros inesquecíveis com a vida selvagem ao longo deste caminho!. 

… on previous expeditions we had driven our “White Fox” (caravan) as far as allowed in Denali Park!. This was one thing, however traveling into the park was another! Why?. Why the road that takes us to Denali Park is one of the most beautiful roads we have probably ever traveled on!. It dives a few miles into the Alaskan wilderness and…, as we manage to get closer and closer to Great Denali, or Mount McKinley, if you prefer, the highest mountain in the USA, it is almost certain that we will have some unforgettable encounters with life wild along this path!.

…então porque razão não o podemos fazer na nossa “White Fox” (caravana)?. Porque não nos é permitido, é por isso!. Após as primeiras 18 ou 20 milhas, a circulação de veículos particulares é restrita!. Para além do Savage River, ou seja, para lá da pequena ponte que o atravessa, aproximadamente na milha 15 ou 16, a estrada é de terra e cascalho, e apenas camionetas aprovadas pelo parque são permitidas!.

…so why can’t we do it in our “White Fox” (caravan)? Because we are not allowed, that’s why! After the first 18 or 20 miles, the circulation of private vehicles is restricted!. Beyond the Savage River, that is, beyond the small bridge that crosses it, approximately at mile 15 or 16, the road is dirt and gravel, and only trucks approved by the park are allowed!.

…como tal, vindos do norte chegamos ao Centro de Visitas do Parque prontos para explorar o Parque!. Aqui, informaram-nos que para isso era necessário pagar pela viajem, que seria feita em camionetas do parque!. Apesar de na nossa já um pouco avançada idade todos os centavos contam, no entanto, comprámos os bilhetes com todos aqueles descontos permitidos pela idade e…, lá fomos pela estrada que começa ganhando alguma elevação depois de deixar o Centro de Visitas, mergulhando instantaneamente nas profundezas da natureza!. 

…as such, coming from the north we arrived at the Park Visitor Center ready to explore the Park!. Even though at our somewhat advanced age every penny counts, however, we bought the tickets with all those discounts allowed by our age and…, off we went along the road that begins gaining some elevation after leaving the Visitor Center, instantly immersing ourselves in the depths of nature!.

…e era verdade!. Durante as quase cinco horas de viajem, percorremos parte dos mais de seis milhões de acres de terras selvagens, da montanha mais alta da América do Norte, com cerca de 20.310 pés, cortada ao meio apenas por uma única estrada de terra e cascalho, com mais de 100 milhas de extensão!. Parando aqui e ali, com explicações do condutor/guia, umas vezes dando prioridade aos animais para atravessar a estrada outras atravessando áreas de precipícios ou cruzando pequenos riachos, percorremos vales, montanhas grandes com neve, outras mais pequenas com lindos cenários e ovelhas Dali pastando!. Vimos ursos pardos e negros, lobos, caribus e alces, bem como águias douradas e carecas, e muitas outras formas de vida selvagem, incluindo as já mencionadas ovelhas Dali!. Valeu a pena!.

…and it was true! During the almost five-hour trip, we covered part of more than six million acres of wild lands, the highest mountain in North America, at around 20,310 feet, cut in half only by a single dirt and gravel road, with over 100 miles long!. Stopping here and there, with explanations from the driver/guide, sometimes giving priority to the animals to cross the road, other times crossing areas of cliffs or crossing small streams, we travel through valleys, large mountains with snow, other smaller ones with beautiful scenery and Dali sheep grazing. !. We saw brown and black bears, wolves, caribou and moose, as well as golden and bald eagles, and many other forms of wildlife, including the aforementioned Dali sheep!. Worth it!.

…Interstate 94, North Dakota!.

…viajávamos próximos do paralelo 48º N, que nos beneficiava aproximadamente de 16 ou mais horas por dia e, com bom ou mau tempo éramos levados numa aventura com um cenário de algumas das paisagens mais bonitas do mundo!.

…we traveled close to the 48th parallel, which benefited us from approximately 16 or more hours a day and, with good or bad weather, we were taken on an adventure with a scenario of some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world!.

…porque Dakota do Norte está situado no meio-oeste dos USA, dominado pelas Grandes Planícies, sendo um destino onde os seus habitantes ainda se podem gabar de ter mais maravilhas cénicas do que pessoas!. As estradas são longas, abertas e desertas, com cenários verdes, vermelhos ou dourados, a vida selvagem e os cursos d’água ainda estão quase no seu ambiente natural e as tribos nativas únicas em Dakota do Norte, têm as suas próprias origens, histórias e linguagens, que são distintas e diferentes!.

…because North Dakota is located in the midwest of the USA, dominated by the Great Plains, being a destination where its inhabitants can still boast of having more scenic wonders than people!. The roads are long, open and deserted, with green, red or gold scenery, the wildlife and waterways are still almost in their natural environment and the unique native tribes in North Dakota have their own origins, histories and languages, which are distinct and different!.

…e viajando por aqui, verificamos que as Grandes Planícies dão lugar às Badlands escarpadas, já perto da fronteira com o estado de Montana, onde o Parque Nacional Theodore Roosevelt atravessa o rio Little Missouri!. No entanto nós, que adoramos a natureza pura e selvagem, sempre dissemos que as cidades para nós são apenas para se passarem, ou seja, quase parte da nossa rota na estrada mas, quando encontramos uma diferente e agradável, ficamos quase sem palavras e depois, “transforma-nos num contador de histórias”!. 

…and traveling here, we find that the Great Plains give way to the rugged Badlands, already close to the border with the state of Montana, where Theodore Roosevelt National Park crosses the Little Missouri River!. However, we, who love pure and wild nature, have always said that cities for us are just to pass through, that is, almost part of our route on the road, but when we find a different and pleasant one, we are almost speechless and then, “turns us into a storyteller”!.

…foi o que aconteceu quando chegámos à cidade de Fargo, visitando o Centro de Visitas onde tivemos algum contacto com a história imigrante da região, que tem uma forte herança escandinava, com um grande descendente de suecos que se mudaram para o meio-oeste, tornando Fargo uma das cidades mais diversificadas da Dakota do Norte e socialmente aberta!.

…this is what happened when we arrived in the city of Fargo, visiting the Visitor Center where we had some contact with the immigrant history of the region, which has a strong Scandinavian heritage, with a large descendant of Swedes who moved to the midwest, making Fargo one of North Dakota’s most diverse and socially open cities!.

…dando uma volta pela cidade, ficamos encantados com todas as lojas, restaurantes, templos ou mesmo na área da antiga estação do caminho de ferro, onde ainda se conservam alguns pormenores intactos do que eram, além de murais e outras atividades, algumas ao ar livre, ou mesmo o Museu de Arte das Planícies, onde se exibe arte nativa americana!. E claro, não esquecer a sua especialidade de culinária local, que sendo de descendência escandinava, exibe as suas sofisticadas sanduíches de queijo grelhado!.

…walking around the city, we were enchanted by all the shops, restaurants, temples or even the area of ​​the old railway station, where some details of what they used to be are still preserved, in addition to murals and other activities, some outdoors (free, or even the Plains Museum of Art, where Native American art is exhibited!. And of course, don’t forget its local cuisine specialty, which being of Scandinavian descent, showcases its sophisticated grilled cheese sandwiches!.

…continuando, viajando pela estrada rápida I-94, no sentido leste/oeste, diz-nos que, conduzir pelas estradas de Dakota do Norte é uma abreviação para o tipo mais, ou seja, do mais bonito cenário de estradas desertas de pradarias, porque o estado é plano e escassamente povoado, com grandes distâncias e paisagens maravilhosas!.

…continuing, traveling on the fast I-94, east/west, tells us that driving the North Dakota highways is shorthand for the more type, i.e. the most beautiful scenery of deserted prairie roads, because the state is flat and sparsely populated, with great distances and wonderful landscapes!.

…parando aqui e ali fomos apreciando e na pequena cidade de Jamestown, uma pequena cidade de fronteira com vários edifícios originais, colocados juntos para dar vida a uma cidade pioneira ou na cidade de Bismark, a capital, conduzindo a nossa “White Fox” (caravana), fizemos um passeio histórico pela área do State Capitol e do North Dakota Heritage Center, parando num restaurante local apreciando a sua culinária local, que era bife de animal arrassado de búfalo, pelo menos foi o que nos explicou a simpática empregada!.

…stopping here and there we enjoyed and in the small town of Jamestown, a small frontier town with several original buildings, put together to give life to a pioneer city or in the city of Bismark, the capital, driving our “White Fox” ( (caravan), we took a historic tour of the State Capitol area and the North Dakota Heritage Center, stopping at a local restaurant enjoying its local cuisine, which was buffalo torn beef steak, at least that’s what the friendly waitress explained to us!.

…continuando e sempre seguindo a rota ao longo da auto-estrada I-94, que nos oferece alguns dos melhores trechos coloridos das Badlands de Dakota do Norte, com um cenário panorâmico de um dos últimos vestígios de vida selvagem das Grandes Planícies do Norte, cuja abertura é ilimitada, com vistas que se estendem tanto na distância de rodagem, que muitas vezes parece que estamos vendo a curvatura da Terra!.

…continuing and always following the route along the I-94 highway, which offers us some of the best colorful stretches of the Badlands of North Dakota, with a panoramic backdrop of one of the last vestiges of wildlife in the Great Plains of North, whose opening is limitless, with views that extend so far into the driving distance that it often feels like we are viewing the curvature of the Earth!.

…e, já próximo do nosso destino para este dia, parámos no Centro de Visitas que se localiza na estrada rápida I-94 já referida, admirando as terras selvagens da parte sul do Parque Nacional Theodore Roosevelt, na procura de ver bisões, alces, cavalos selvagens e muito mais, neste pitoresco parque nacional que recebeu o nome do antigo presidente que defendeu a sua conservação!.

…and, already close to our destination for this day, we stopped at the Visitor Center located on the aforementioned I-94 highway, admiring the wild lands of the southern part of Theodore Roosevelt National Park, looking to see bison, elk, wild horses and much more, in this picturesque national park named after the former president who defended its conservation!.

…até que chegámos à pequena cidade de Medora, uma pequena cidade da Dakota do Norte, com uma grande história que talvez começasse quando um rico francês e sua esposa, por volta do ano de 1883,  construíram aqui uma casa e uma cabana de caça dando lugar a que hoje seja o lar da entrada no Parque Nacional Theoodore Roosevelt que felizmente está aberto o ano todo!.

…until we arrived in the small town of Medora, a small town in North Dakota, with a great history that perhaps began when a rich Frenchman and his wife, around the year 1883, built a house and a hunting cabin here. place that is now home to the entrance to Theodore Roosevelt National Park, which fortunately is open year-round!.

…fazendo de nós umas das mais de 700.000 pessoas que visitam este Parque Nacional a cada ano!. No entanto, muitos deles só fazem uma paragem no tal Centro de Visitas, que tal como já referimos, visitámos ao passar pela auto-estrada I-94, porque é um belo ponto de paragem com todas as facilidades para quem viaja, mas é apenas uma pequena amostra do que torna este parque especial!. 

…making us one of the more than 700,000 people who visit this National Park each year!. However, many of them only make one stop at the Visitors Center, which, as we have already mentioned, we visited when passing through the I-94 highway, because it is a beautiful stopping point with all the facilities for those who travel, but it is only a small sample of what makes this park special)!.
