…quando acordámos o céu estava simplesmente mágico mas…, em pouco tempo fico tudo enevoado, era normal, estávamos lá no norte perto do Ártico, na cidade de Fairbanks!. Pensamos que Fairbanks talvez seja a segunda maior cidade do Alaska, mas não é uma metrópole!. Este “posto avançado” no interior do Alaska não é uma cidade grande mas é uma grande atração!. Porquê?. Porque entre outras, um qualquer viajante tal como nós, aqui se pode organizar, reabastecer e seguir para norte, até à zona do Circulo Ártico, tal como já fizemos em expedições anteriores, e agora…, será o foco de pelo menos um dia da nossa viagem pelo Alaska!.

…when we woke up the sky was simply magical but…, in a short time everything became misty, it was normal, we were there in the north near the Arctic, in the city of Fairbanks!. We think that Fairbanks may be the second largest city in Alaska, but it is not a metropolis!. This “outpost” in the interior of Alaska is not a big city but it is a big attraction! Why?. Because among others, any traveler like us can organize, resupply and head north to the Arctic Circle area, as we have done on previous expeditions, and now…, it will be the focus of at least one day of the our trip through Alaska!.

…e tudo bem, porque há pelo menos um dia de coisas para ver e fazer!. 

…continuando, era manhã cedo, quando deixámos o parque de RV e…, qualquer visita à cidade de Fairbanks deve começar pela área do Centro de Visitantes, localizado no que é certamente o edifício mais bonito do centro de Fairbanks!. Este lugar é muito mais do que um centro de boas-vindas, porque também é um excelente museu, que conta a história da vida no interior do Alaska!. As exposições ilustram as estações, desta vez, o verão, onde a pesca é o grande foco!. Aviões pequenos são uma grande parte dessa vida, e encontramos um pairando lá no alto, prendido no tecto do edifício!. 

…and that’s okay, because there’s at least a day’s worth of things to see and do!. 

…continuing, it was early in the morning when we left the RV park and…, any visit to the city of Fairbanks should begin with the Visitor Center area, located in what is certainly the most beautiful building in downtown Fairbanks!. This place is much more than a welcome center, because it is also an excellent museum, which tells the story of life in the interior of Alaska!. The exhibitions illustrate the seasons, this time summer, where fishing is the main focus! Small planes are a big part of that life, and we found one hovering high above, attached to the roof of the building!. 

…está situado na área do “Golden Heart Plaza”, que se encontrava repleta de flores de todas as cores!. Também lá estava uma torre do relógio, doada pelo Fairbanks Rotary Club em 1990, comemorando os primeiros cinquenta anos de serviço desta organização a Fairbanks e ao Interior, tal como um marcador de milhas que proclamava o centro da cidade e…, partir dali, eram 4.940 milhas até à cidade de Lisboa emPortugal, país onde nascemos, e 5.312 milhas até ao estado da Florida, onde presentemente vivemos!.

…it is located in the “Golden Heart Plaza” area, which was full of flowers of all colors!. Also there was a clock tower, donated by the Fairbanks Rotary Club in 1990, commemorating the organization’s first fifty years of service to Fairbanks and the Interior, as was a mile marker that proclaimed the center of the city and… from there, they were 4,940 miles to the city of Lisbon in Portugal, the country where we were born, and 5,312 miles to the state of Florida, where we currently live!.

…mas o que desperta a atenção é sem qualquer dúvida…, a estátua circundada por uma fonte de água, da “Primeira Família Desconhecida” de Malcolm Alexander, que homenageia principalmente o “povo Inuit” que viveu aqui muito antes da chegada dos colonos modernos, e que em suas palavras está “Retratando a família de toda a humanidade, a família de Fairbanks e a família nuclear!. Deixe esta estátua simbolizar, para as famílias presentes e futuras, o orgulho e a dignidade de esta grande terra”!. Outra curiosidade é que, uma cápsula do tempo, a ser inaugurada em 3 de janeiro de 2059, está enterrada nesta Plaza!.

…but what attracts attention is without a doubt…, the statue surrounded by a water fountain, of the “First Unknown Family” by Malcolm Alexander, which mainly pays homage to the “Inuit people” who lived here long before the arrival of modern settlers , and which in his words is “Portraying the family of all humanity, the Fairbanks family and the nuclear family!. Let this statue symbolize, for present and future families, the pride and dignity of this great land”!. Another curiosity is that a time capsule, to be inaugurated on January 3, 2059, is buried in this Plaza!

…na mesma área do “Golden Heart Plaza”, está o edifício Lacey Street Theatre, agora abrigando o Fairbanks Ice Museum, que é um teatro dedicado a todas as coisas relacionadas ao gelo!. Visitámos este museu que nos mostra o clima de inverno, independentemente das temperaturas do verão!. Apreciámos várias exibições de gelo, num local onde se pode entrar para sentir que estamos a 20 graus abaixo de zero, vendo uma enorme coleção de figuras de arte no gelo!. Algumas esculturas iam-se derretendo e estavam quebradas!. O preço é um pouco alto pelo que é, mas provavelmente custa muito manter a área resfriada o suficiente!.

…in the same area as the “Golden Heart Plaza”, is the Lacey Street Theater building, now housing the Fairbanks Ice Museum, which is a theater dedicated to all things ice related!. We visited this museum that shows us the winter climate, regardless of summer temperatures! We enjoyed several ice exhibits, in a place where you can enter to feel like you are 20 degrees below zero, seeing a huge collection of ice art figures!. Some sculptures were melting and were broken! The price is a little high for what it is, but it probably costs a lot to keep the area cool enough!.

…um pouco para oeste/norte da cidade, visitámos o Museu do Norte da Universidade do Alaska, onde podemos apreciar histórias fascinantes sobre as pessoas, os lugares e a vida selvagem do Alaska nas excelentes galerias de exposições deste fabuloso museu, na sua melhor introdução a este vasto e diversificado estado!. Desde a vida selvagem do Alaska até à arte contemporânea dos nativos do Alaska, qualquer que seja o nosso interesse, encontramos algo atraente em exposição!.

…a little west/north of the city, we visited the University of Alaska Museum of the North, where we can enjoy fascinating stories about the people, places and wildlife of Alaska in the excellent exhibition galleries of this fabulous museum, at its best introduction to this vast and diverse state!. From Alaskan wildlife to contemporary Alaska Native art, whatever our interest, we’ll find something compelling on display!

…sem qualquer dúvida que nos mostra muitos tesouros que antes estavam armazenados, mas agora estão à vista do público!. As galerias apresentam quase toda a arte nativa do Alaska, desde antigas esculturas de marfim dos esquimós até às pinturas e esculturas contemporâneas, tanto nativas quanto não-nativas!. Os destaques incluem a maior exibição de ouro do Alaska, extensas exibições de arte e artefactos nativos do Alaska e a única múmia restaurada de bisão das estepes da Idade do Gelo do mundo!. Neste museu está parte da explicação com linhas e espaços inovadores que evocam imagens de cordilheiras alpinas, geleiras, ruptura do rio Yukon, onde podemos descobrir as culturas nativas do Alasca, as maravilhas naturais, a vida selvagem diversificada e os dinossauros do Ártico!. 

…without any doubt it shows us many treasures that were previously stored, but are now on public view! The galleries feature almost all Alaska Native art, from ancient Eskimo ivory carvings to contemporary paintings and sculptures, both native and non-native!. Highlights include Alaska’s largest gold display, extensive displays of Alaska Native art and artifacts, and the world’s only restored Ice Age steppe bison mummy! In this museum is part of the explanation with innovative lines and spaces that evoke images of alpine ranges, glaciers, breaking of the Yukon River, where we can discover Alaska’s native cultures, natural wonders, diverse wildlife and Arctic dinosaurs!. 

…a nosso pedido, uma simpática funcionária deste museu, mostrou-nos um pequeno filme, explicando-nos que o hoje histórico autocarro 142, com aquela pintura enferrujada, verde e branca, manchada com manchas amarelas da camada de tinta mais antiga aparecendo, com o seu teto arredondado e os seus para-lamas bulbosos, com aquelas letras pretas: FAIRBANKS CITY TRANSIT SYSTEM, que é uma das “estrelas” do filme “Into the Wild, que tem Sean Penn como director!. Está aqui a ser reparado de acordo com fotografias que foram coletadas e organizadas em ordem cronológica, para os conservadores e o pessoal do museu, poderem no futuro provar ser um recurso inestimável do original, e que quando terminado, vai ser exposto no parque junto a este Museu!.

…at our request, a friendly employee of this museum, showed us a short film, explaining to us that the now historic bus 142, with that rusty, green and white paintwork, stained with yellow stains from the oldest layer of paint appearing, with its rounded roof and its bulbous fenders, with those black letters: FAIRBANKS CITY TRANSIT SYSTEM, which is one of the “stars” of the film “Into the Wild, which has Sean Penn as director!. It is here being repaired according to photographs that were collected and organized in chronological order, so that conservators and museum staff can in the future prove to be an invaluable resource of the original, and when finished, it will be displayed in the park next to this Museum!.
