…ouvindo e sentindo o vento do oeste!. (Listening and feeling the wind from the west)!.

…um bom viajante não tem planos fixos e não tem a intenção de chegar, todavia nós, já chegámos a casa, no estado da Flórida!. Respiramos fundo e dizemos, “Bem vindos de volta ao mundo real”!. (A good traveler has no fixed plans and does not intend to arrive, yet we have already arrived home in the state of Florida!. We breathe deeply and say, “Welcome back to the real world”!).

…era já quase noite mas não foi pela calada da noite, foi um pouco cansados mas com alguma alegria que retornámos, podendo de novo ver o nosso jardim, o nosso lar, deixando as estrelas da noite serem a luz que nos iluminaram!. (It was already almost night but it was not in the dead of night, it was a bit tired but with some joy we returned, being able to see our garden, our home again, letting the stars of the night be the light that illuminated us)!.

…foram quase duas semanas onde existiu algum mundo, umas vezes virtual outras real, mesmo real, onde a natureza pura nos foi mostrando, primeiro áreas planas, parques abertos, prados de feno, trechos de rios e riachos, cidades ou pequenas povoações aqui e ali, seguindo sempre para oeste, em diagonal na direcção norte, onde pouco a pouco fomos observando uma atraente diversidade de terrenos montanhosos, alguns densamente arborizados, outros nem tanto!. (There were almost two weeks where there was some world, sometimes virtual other real, even real, where the pure nature was showing us, first flat areas, open parks, meadows, stretches of rivers and streams, cities or small settlements here and there, always heading west, diagonally heading north, where little by little we were observing an attractive diversity of mountainous terrain, some densely wooded, others not so much)!.

…vamos tentar exemplificar, em alguns casos com algum pormenor, esta nossa aventura, porque as pessoas não fazem viagens, as viagens é que levam as pessoas e, não existem terras estrangeiras, só o viajante é que é estrangeiro, porque no fundo no fundo, o planeta terra existe para ser usado e admirado por todos os seres vivos que nele habitam e se possam movimentar em seu redor, mas sempre com o sentido da responsabilidade de o respeitar, ou seja, não o destruindo!. (We will try to exemplify, in some cases with some detail, our adventure, because people do not travel, travel is what people take and there are no foreign lands, only the traveler is foreign, because in the background in the background, the planet earth exists to be used and admired by all the living beings that inhabit it and can move around it, but always with the sense of responsibility to respect it, that is, not destroying it)!.

…saindo, ainda era madrugada, do estado da Flórida, viajámos no sentido oeste, sempre com um cenário plano, numa auto-estrada rodeada de vejetação, onde existiam áreas de descanso, atravessando rios, lagos ou pontes contínuas com algumas milhas de distância sobre áreas alagadiças, cruzando algumas cidades, entre outras, Jacksonville e Pensacola, ainda no estado da Flórida!. (Leaving, it was still dawn, from the state of Florida, we traveled west, always with a flat landscape, on a freeway surrounded by vexation, where there were rest areas, crossing rivers, lakes or continuous bridges with a few miles Jacksonville and Pensacola, still in the state of Florida)!.

…junto da Baía de St. Louis, no estado do Mississippi!. (Near St. Louis Bay, Mississippi)!.

…Nova Orleans e Botton Rouge, no estado de Louisiana, onde pernoitámos na cidade um pouco deserta de Scott, deste mesmo estado, onde no momento chuvia um pouco e, não usámos o parque de campismo, pois o valor de um quarto de hotel, era quase o mesmo e ainda éramos contemplados com o pequeno almoço!. (New Orleans and Botton Rouge, in the state of of Louisiana, where we spent the night in the somewhat deserted town of Scott, from the same state, where it was raining a bit, and we did not use the campsite because the value of a hotel room was almost the same and we were still contemplating the small lunch)!.

…deste primeiro dia, tudo foi normal, atravessando cidades que já conhecíamos, com história muito rica, principalmente na cultura da era do descobrimento e povoamento deste imenso país, por alguns navegadores ou corsários, oriundos de países da distante Europa que, navegando no mar das Caraíbas, se aventuravam, entrando no Golfo do México!. (Of this first day, everything was normal, crossing cities that we already knew, with a very rich history, mainly in the culture of the era of the discovery and settlement of this immense country, by some navigators or corsairs, coming from countries of distant Europe that, sailing in the Caribbean Sea, ventured into the Gulf of Mexico)!.

…segundo dia!. (Second day)!.

…a chuva era contínua, em alguns momento muito forte, tal como um tornado, quando iniciámos a viajem do segundo dia, agora no sentido transversal para norte!. Com a água sempre presente na estrada, mas não odiando a nossa vida por ser interrompida com algum precalço menos feliz, tivémos uma pequena avaria no motor da nossa “White Fox”, (Caravana), que logo resolvemos, continuando viajem, alegres, ouvindo música e falando alto, quase cantando, dentro da caravana!. (The rain was continuous, at some point very strong, like a tornado, when we started the journey of the second day, now in the transverse direction to the north!. With the water always present on the road, but not hating our life for being interrupted with some less happy pre-flight, we had a small fault in the engine of our “White Fox” (Caravan), which we soon resolved, continuing to travel, happy, listening music and loud talking, almost singing, inside the caravan)!.

…continuando sempre chuvendo, entrámos no estado do Texas!. Um dos destinos do nosso roteiro era a cidade de Dallas, onde queríamos visitar o John Fitzgerald Kennedy Memorial, que é um monumento ao antigo presidente dos Estados Unidos John Fitzgerald Kennedy no distrito histórico de West End no centro da cidade de Dallas, Texas!. (Continuing to rain, we entered the state of Texas!. One of the destinations of our script was the city of Dallas, where we wanted to visit the John Fitzgerald Kennedy Memorial, which is a monument to former United States President John Fitzgerald Kennedy in the historic West End district in downtown Dallas, Texas)!.

…dizem-nos que o juiz de Dallas, Lew Sterrett foi creditado como o primeiro a propor um monumento ao então presidente Kennedy, em 24 de Novembro de 1963, dois dias após o seu assassinato!. (We are told that Dallas judge Lew Sterrett was credited as the first to propose a monument to then-President Kennedy, on November 24, 1963, two days after his murder)!.

…foi neste ano de 1963 que nós, ao serviço do então governo colonial de Portugal, fomos arrancados da nossa aldeia, na encosta agreste da montanha do Caramulo, para num improvisado aquartelamento militar de uma cidade próxima, receber um mínimo treino de combate militar, indo parar ao continente africano, lutando na Guerra Colonial Portuguesa, contra pessoas que nunca antes tínhamos visto e nada tínhamos em contra, que lutavam pela liberdade dos seus países, por uma vida melhor, onde os seus filhos podessem ter direito à saúde, à alimentação, à escola, à dignidade e crescer num lar com paz e prosperidade, ou seja, no mínimo terem um farrapo a cobrir-lhes o corpo e pelo menos uma refeição diária, onde o então presidente Kennedy, segundo a história universal, teve um importante papel de auxílio a este povo martirizado, mostrando-lhes o direito à liberdade!. …nós, embora sendo também vítimas daquela guerra, dispensámos uns momentos de silêncio e meditação junto do monumento, em honra desta personagem, que mostrou ao mundo que a liberdade é muito importante na vida de todos, se for respeitada e usada com responsabilidade!. (While we were also victims of that war, we spared a few moments of silence and meditation near the monument in honor of this personage, who showed the world that freedom is very important in everyone’s life, if it is respected and used with responsibility)!.

…era já ao fim da tarde, por um tráfico imenso, fomos progredindo em direcção ao norte, onde pernoitámos na, tal como no dia anterior, quase deserta cidade de Decatur, no estado de Texas, com alguma chuva miudinha, num quarto de hotel, onde o preço era quase igual ao de um normal parque de campismo, com a particularidade de termos direito a um pequeno almoço!. (It was already late in the afternoon, by an immense traffic, we were progressing northward, where we spent the night in the almost deserted city of Decatur, Texas, with some small rain in the room of hotel where the price was almost equal to that of a normal campsite, with the particularity of having right to a breakfast)!.

…terceiro dia!. (Third day)!.

…a viajem continuou pela manhã, com sol, estrada livre, áreas planas, campos cultivados com milho, trigo e outros cereais, moínhos de vento produzindo energia, engenhos arrancando petrólio das profundezas da terra, grandes manadas de gado bobino, onde chegámos à cidade de
Amarillo, que é uma cidade no Texas Panhandle!. (The journey continued in the morning, with sunshine, free road, flat areas, fields cultivated with corn, wheat and other cereals, wind mills producing energy, mills plucking oil from the depths of the earth, large herds of bobbin cattle, where we arrived the city of Amarillo, which is a city in the Texas Panhandle)!.

…é uma porta de entrada para o vasto e arborizado Palo Duro Canyon State Park!. O Cadillac Ranch é uma instalação de carros decorados com grafite, parcialmente enterrados em um campo!. Com edifícios arte Déco e Revival Espanhol, o distrito histórico Route 66 (Estrada 66), é um centro para refeições e antiguidades!. (Is a gateway to the vast, tree-lined Palo Duro Canyon State Park!. The Cadillac Ranch is an installation of cars decorated with graffiti, partially buried in a field!. With Art Deco and Spanish Revival Buildings, the historic Route 66 is a center for dining and antiques)!.

…onde nós, viajantes aventureiros, viajamos para o cenário da natureza, viajamos para nos perdermos, mas não podemos rejeitar a comida, ignorar os costumes, temer a religião ou evitar as pessoas, pois de outro modo era melhor ficar em casa, como tal frequentámos um típico restaurante local, sobretudo para retemperar forças!. (Where we, adventurous travelers, travel to the scenery of nature, we travel to get lost, but we can not reject food, ignore customs, fear religion or avoid people, otherwise it was better to stay at home, as such we frequented a typical local restaurant, mainly to retemper forces)!.

…continuámos, o fuzo horário atrazava a hora, portanto os dias eram maiores o que nos deu a vantagem de viajar mais horas diárias, podendo assim aumentar a vantagem de poder chegar o mais a oeste possível!. (We continued, the time zone was hitting the hour, so the days were bigger which gave us the advantage of traveling more hours daily, thus increasing the advantage of being able to reach as far west as possible)!.

…o cenário era igual ao do dia anterior, onde as montanhas começavam a aparecer, com um tempo magnífico, chegando mesmo ao estado do Colorado ainda a tempo de ocupar um lugar num parque de campismo na cidade de Pueblo!. (The scene was the same as the previous day, where the mountains began to appear, with a magnificent time, even reaching the state of Colorado still in time to occupy a place in a camping in the city of Pueblo)!.

…quarto dia!. (Fourth day)!.

…estávamos no estado do Colorado, o vento do oeste aparecia, o céu era azul, as montanhas eram já ali, algumas com neve!. (We were in the state of Colorado, the west wind appeared, the sky was blue, the mountains were already there, some with snow)!.

…estávamos quase a chegar ao nosso destino, começámos por viajar na Estrada US 50, que no estado do Colorado é uma importante rodovia que cruza a parte baixa deste estado, conectando o declive ocidental com o Front Range inferior e o Arkansas Valley!. (We were about to arrive at our destination, we started by traveling on US 50, which in the state of Colorado is an important highway that crosses the lower part of this state, connecting the western slope with the Lower Front Range and the Arkansas Valley)!.

…esta estrada cénica serve as áreas de Pueblo e Grand Junction, assim como muitas outras áreas menores ao longo de seu corredor, terminando na linha estadual do estado do Utah, paralela à Interstate 70!. (This scenic road serves the Pueblo and Grand Junction areas, as well as many other smaller areas along its corridor, ending at the state line of the Utah state, parallel to Interstate 70)!.

…os desfiladeiros de arenito e os pináculos rochosos são visíveis tanto a sul como a norte da estrada que entra no Vale do Rio Arkansas, que é o segundo maior afluente do sistema do rio Mississippi-Missouri!. (The sandstone canyons and rocky pinnacles are visible both to the south and north of the road leading into the Arkansas River Valley, which is the second largest tributary of the Mississippi-Missouri River system)!.

…perto do início do nosso percurso, a estrada atravessa o rio e, antes da estrada subir e deixar o desfiladeiro, na povoação de Parkdale, que é o lar do rafting, mineração e uma importante área de lazer ao longo deste rio!. (Near the beginning of our trail, the road crosses the river and, before the road climbs up and leave the gorge, in the village of Parkdale, which is home to rafting, mining and an important recreational area along this river! .

…nós, saindo desta estrada por algum tempo, desviámo-nos para sul, entrando na área do Royal Gorge, levando-nos à borda do desfiladeiro e da sua famosa ponte suspensa, que tem 1.260 pés (380 m) de comprimento e 956 pés (291 m) acima do rio Arkansas!. (We, departing from this road for some time, turned south, entering the Royal Gorge area, taking us to the edge of the gorge and its famous suspension bridge, which is 1,260 feet (380 m) long and 956 feet (291 m) above the Arkansas River !.

…foi construído em 1929 e permanece uma atração turística popular que reabriu ao público em 2014 depois que um incêndio devastador destruiu grande parte do parque ao redor em 2013, onde a ponte permaneceu intacta mas, algumas tábuas foram enegrecidas!. (Was built in 1929 and remains a popular tourist attraction that reopened to the public in 2014 after a devastating fire destroyed much of the park around in 2013, where the bridge remained intact but, some boards were blackened)!.

…quase todo o seu percurso é feito perto o rio Arkansas, entrando num desfiladeiro profundo, apelidado de Bighorn Sheep Canyon, onde existem várias pequenas comunidades, entre elas Howard, Coaldale ou Cotopaxi, onde as principais indústrias são a pesca e o rafting!. (Almost all of its route is done near the Arkansas river, entering a deep gorge, nicknamed Bighorn Sheep Canyon, where there are several small communities, among them Howard, Coaldale or Cotopaxi, where the main industries are fishing and rafting)!.

…as montanhas continuam com neve e, lá no cimo, ao cruzá-las, quase todos os veículos, incluindo o nosso, perdem a força no motor, devido à intempérie, tendo que viajar devagar, mesmo muito devagar e, com o motor a quase 3.000 rotações por minuto!. (The mountains are still snowy, and at the top, when crossing them, almost all vehicles, including ours, lose their power in the engine due to the weather, having to travel slowly, even very slowly and, with the motor at almost 3,000 revolutions per minute)!.

…finalmente chegámos ao estado do Utah!. Viajando mais uma vez, agora na estrada rápida Interstate 70, saímos para sul na localidade de Cisco, viajando pela terceira vez na estrada estadual e cénica 128, que tem uma extensão de aproximadamente 72 quilômetros!. (We finally reached the state of Utah!. Traveling once again, now on the Interstate 70 fast road, we head south on Cisco’s locality, traveling for the third time on state and scenic highway 128, which has an extension of approximately 72 miles)!.

…se a felicidade é o objectivo de quase todas as pessoas, e deveria ser, então as aventuras devem ser a prioridade máxima e, nada melhor do que percorrer toda a extensão desta estrada que foi designada como Caminho Cénico Superior do Rio Colorado!. (If happiness is the goal of almost all people, and it should be, then adventures should be the top priority and nothing better than to walk the entire length of this road that has been designated as Colorado’s Upper Scenic Way)!.

…esta estrada, também faz parte do programa da Estrada Pré-histórica do Diamante do Dinossauro, um Caminho Cénico Nacional! (This road, is also part of the program of the Prehistoric Dinosaur Diamond Road, a National Scenic Way)!.

…moradores da cidade do Moabe, onde pernoitámos num parque de campismo, frequentemente se referem a SR-128 como “a estrada do rio”, pois o Rio Colorado, segue a estrada em toda a sua extensão!. (Residents of the city of Moab, where we spend the night in a campsite, often refer to SR-128 as “the river road” because the Colorado River follows the road in all its extension)!.

…ao outro dia pela manhã, saindo da nossa “White Fox” (Caravana), abrimos os braços, prontos para enfrentar o vento do oeste e, despertar numa manhã de sol azul, numa localidade estranha, é uma das sensações mais agradáveis do mundo!. Estávamos no estado do Utah, estávamos cercados de aventura!. (The other day in the morning, coming out of our “White Fox” (Caravan), we open our arms, ready to face the wind from the west and wake up on a morning of blue sun, in a strange locality, is one of the most pleasant sensations of the world!. We were in the state of Utah, we were surrounded by adventure)!.
