…estávamos no estado da Califórnia e seguíamos na direcção norte pela estrada número 1, a quem também chamam, entre outros nomes “Cabrillo Highway”, em homenagem ao navegador e explorador Português, João Rodrigues Cabrilho, nascido na vila de Montalegre, em Portugal, no ano de 1499, porque esta estrada segue sempre encostada ao oceano Pacífico!. 

…we were in the state of California and we were heading north on road number 1, which they also call, among other names, “Cabrillo Highway”, in honor of the Portuguese navigator and explorer, João Rodrigues Cabrilho, born in the town of Montalegre, in Portugal, in the year 1499, because this road always runs alongside the Pacific Ocean!.

…próximo da cidade de São Francisco, parámos numa estação de serviço, perguntando qual a maneira mais rápida e funcional de atravessar a ponte “Golden Gate”, e a funcionária, sorrindo, disse-nos, “é para aquele lado, mas nunca lá fui”!. Uma outra simpática senhora ao lado, logo nos disse, “é fácil, quando entrarem na cidade, basta seguir os sinais com desenhos da ponte, que aparecem em quase todas as ruas ou cruzamentos do percurso”!. E logo em seguida, fazendo uns gestos esquisitos com ambos os braços, continuou, “a ponte às vezes balança e treme…, que horror!. Vivo em São Francisco há mais de 20 anos e só atravessei a ponte duas vezes, quando fui visitar uma tia que vive no norte”!..

..near the city of San Francisco, we stopped at a service station, asking what was the quickest and most functional way to cross the “Golden Gate” bridge, and the employee, smiling, told us, “it’s that way, but I never went there”!. Another nice lady next door told us, “It’s easy, when you enter the city, just follow the signs with drawings of the bridge, which appear on almost every street or intersection along the route”!. And then, making some strange gestures with both arms, she continued, “the bridge sometimes shakes and shakes…, how horrible!. I’ve lived in San Francisco for over 20 years and I’ve only crossed the bridge twice, when I went to visit an aunt who lives in the north”!.

…foi o que fizemos, demorou algum tempo, mas conseguimos!. Fomos ao outro lado da baía e regressámos, era uma vista agradável, mesmo muito agradável e…, na nossa ideia logo ficou a determinação de que iríamos fazer este trajecto de novo, mas caminhando, ou seja, atravessar a ponte a pé!.

..that’s what we did, it took some time, but we did it! We went to the other side of the bay and came back, it was a pleasant view, really very pleasant and…, our idea soon became determined that we would do this route again, but walking, that is, crossing the bridge on foot!.

…São Francisco é uma cidade onde os espanhóis, por altura do ano de 1776 se estabeleceram numa pequena fortaleza no “Golden Gate”, numa missão chamada “Francisco de Assis”!. Entretanto, entre outras, a corrida ao ouro na Califórnia, por volta do ano de 1848, impulsionou a cidade com um período rápido de crescimento, pois a sua população no espaço de um ano cresceu de 1.000 para 25.000 habitantes, tornando-se naquela época a maior cidade da costa oeste dos USA!.

…San Francisco is a city where the Spanish, around the year 1776, established themselves in a small fortress at the “Golden Gate”, in a mission called “Francisco de Assis”!. However, among others, the gold rush in California, around the year 1848, boosted the city with a rapid period of growth, as its population in the space of a year grew from 1,000 to 25,000 inhabitants, becoming at that time the largest city on the west coast of the USA!.

…e hoje é uma cidade muito visitada!. É costume dizer-se, que todos conhecem São Francisco até antes de visitar a cidade, devido às fotos, películas de Hollywood, anúncios de TV e outros meios de comunicação que existem!. Juntando a tudo isto, também foi e é protagonista de uma história que merece ser mencionada, pois durante a “Segunda Guerra Mundial”, a cidade de São Francisco foi o porto de embarque para a “Guerra do Pacífico”, e com o fim da guerra, o retorno dos militares, a emigração em massa, atitudes de liberalização e outros factores levaram ao “Verão do Amor” e ao movimento pelos direitos dos homossexuais, fazendo da cidade de São Francisco um centro de activismo liberal dos USA!.

It is often said that everyone knows San Francisco even before visiting the city, due to the photos, Hollywood films, TV advertisements and other media that exist!. Adding to all this, he was also and is the protagonist of a story that deserves to be mentioned, as during the “Second World War”, the city of San Francisco was the embarkation port for the “Pacific War”, and with the end of the war, the return of the military, mass emigration, liberalizing attitudes and other factors led to the “Summer of Love” and the gay rights movement, making the city of San Francisco a center of liberal activism in the USA!.

…continuando…, na pequena lista dos principais lugares de interesse que entretanto selecionámos, pois eram tantos, tornando a escolha algo difícil, mas sempre sobressaía a “Golden Gate Bridge”, o “Fisherman’s Wharf” e o “Chinatown”!. Como tal, começámos por atravessar a “Golden Gate Bridge” que quer dizer mais ou menos “Ponte do Portão do Ouro”…, a pé, caminhando!.

…continuing…, in the short list of the main places of interest that we selected in the meantime, as there were so many, making the choice somewhat difficult, but the “Golden Gate Bridge”, “Fisherman’s Wharf” and “Chinatown” always stood out!. As such, we started by crossing the “Golden Gate Bridge”…, on foot, walking!.

…esta maravilhosa ponte liga São Francisco à cidade de Sausalito, que fica situada do lado de lá, ao norte, mas dentro da área da baía de São Francisco onde a ponte termina sobre o estreito de “Golden Gate”, que é uma das mais conhecidas construções dos USA, considerada uma das sete maravilhas do mundo moderno, cujo comprimento depende do que nós quisermos medir, mas dizem que o vão principal da suspensão entre as torres é de 1280 metros, o que fez da “Ponte Golden Gate” a maior ponte suspensa do mundo, até que a Ponte Verrazano Narrows que foi construída em Nova York no ano de 1964, com um projecto que foi deliberadamente feito 60 metros mais longo para definir o recorde mundial!.

…this wonderful bridge connects San Francisco to the city of Sausalito, which is located on the other side, to the north, but within the San Francisco Bay area where the bridge ends over the “Golden Gate” strait, which is one of the most famous constructions in the USA, considered one of the seven wonders of the modern world, whose length depends on what we want to measure, but they say that the main suspension span between the towers is 1280 meters, which made the “Golden Gate Bridge” the longest suspension bridge in the world, until the Verrazano Narrows Bridge which was built in New York in the year 1964, with a design that was deliberately made 60 meters longer to set the world record!.

…sempre caminhando…, iniciámos a nossa aventura sabendo que as forças da natureza colidem na área da “Ponte Golden Gate” todos os dias, pois estamos quase a 70 metros acima da superfície do Oceano Pacífico e da Baía de São Francisco, bem no meio de uma abertura estreita na escala de uma costa montanhosa, onde a “Golden Gate” é a única abertura ao nível do mar que leva a milhares de quilómetros quadrados de vales ou montanhas, com o continente e o oceano, onde o calor se refresca durante o dia, que pode mudar a pressão do ar de expansão para contracção, que por sua vez pode causar ventos fortes, onde a atmosfera se ajusta às diferentes pressões de ar da terra e do oceano!. 

…always walking…, we began our adventure knowing that the forces of nature collide in the “Golden Gate Bridge” area every day, as we are almost 70 meters above the surface of the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, right in the middle of a narrow opening on the scale of a mountainous coast, where the “Golden Gate” is the only opening at sea level that leads to thousands of square kilometers of valleys or mountains, with the continent and the ocean, where the heat is cooled during the day, which can change air pressure from expansion to contraction, which in turn can cause strong winds, where the atmosphere adjusts to the different air pressures of the land and ocean!.

…também existem marés fortes para dentro e fora da “Golden Gate” área, misturando água fresca dos grandes rios que desaguam na baía, com a água salgada e turbulenta do Oceano Pacífico, que podem ter diferentes temperaturas, assim como o ar acima da água pode ser também de diferentes temperaturas, que causam variações na direcção dos ventos diários, que causam o tradicional nevoeiro, que pode existir por horas ou por alguns minutos, tanto seja pela manhã como pela tarde!.

…there are also strong tides in and out of the “Golden Gate” area, mixing fresh water from the large rivers that flow into the bay, with the salty, turbulent water of the Pacific Ocean, which can have different temperatures, as can the air above The water can also be of different temperatures, which cause variations in the direction of the daily winds, which cause the traditional fog, which can exist for hours or for a few minutes, both in the morning and in the afternoon!.

…levávamos equipamento para enfrentar todas estas anomalias, sentindo a brisa na cara surgindo pela frente, com o céu azul, nevoeiro, alguns chuviscos, vento e…, de novo céu azul!. Fomos parando aqui e ali, tirando fotos, vendo a cidade ao longe, de diversas posições, pois do lado leste da ponte enfrentamos a cidade de São Francisco e a Baía, a parte oeste nos dias de semana é geralmente reservado para as equipas de manutenção!.

…we took equipment to face all these anomalies, feeling the breeze on our faces coming up ahead, with the blue sky, fog, some drizzle, wind and…, blue sky again!. We stopped here and there, taking photos, seeing the city in the distance, from different positions, as on the east side of the bridge we face the city of San Francisco and the Bay, the west side on weekdays is generally reserved for maintenance teams!.

…também existem duas passagens abaixo do tabuleiro da ponte, uma é um amplo túnel na extremidade sul e a outra é uma passagem estreita no extremo norte, para os caminhantes como nós terem a oportunidade de atravessar entre as duas passagens, dando aos visitantes acesso a grandes oportunidades para fotos dramáticas de ambos os lados da ponte, que como dizíamos antes, com uma vista fabulosa, com vistas para a cidade de São Francisco, para a ilha de Alcatraz e outras áreas da parte leste da Baía, assim como alguns barcos passando, com os golfinhos fugindo na frente!.

…there are also two passages below the bridge deck, one is a wide tunnel at the south end and the other is a narrow passage at the north end, for walkers like us to have the opportunity to cross between the two passages, giving visitors access to great opportunities for dramatic photos from both sides of the bridge, which as we said before, with a fabulous view, overlooking the city of San Francisco, Alcatraz Island and other areas of the eastern part of the Bay, as well as some boats passing by , with dolphins escaping ahead!.

…já no regresso, ao meio da ponte, pudemos admirar os cabos gigantescos que descem ao nível do convés, o que nos permite ver o quão grosso são!. Quando passamos ao lado das torres, existe uma pequena curva, produzindo uma “sacada”, para mais pontos de vista e fotos!. O círculo branco ao redor da base da torre da ponte é uma barreira de concreto que desvia as poderosas correntes de maré, e a protege contra os navios que podem, por qualquer razão, ficar fora do seu curso!. E nós, viajantes do mundo, ficamos gratos, gravando na memória um cenário, que nos ficou no pensamento para toda a vida!. 

…on the way back, in the middle of the bridge, we were able to admire the gigantic cables that descend to deck level, which allows us to see how thick they are!. When we pass next to the towers, there is a small curve, producing a “balcony”, for more views and photos!. The white circle around the base of the bridge tower is a concrete barrier that deflects powerful tidal currents, and protects it against ships that may, for whatever reason, run off course! And we, world travelers, were grateful, recording in our memory a scene that remained in our thoughts for the rest of our lives!

…atravessámos a ponte nas duas direcções, parando por umas horas do lado de lá, onde existe um ponto privilegiado de observação, para repouso e admirar a paisagem!. Só mais um pormenor, a cor da “Ponte Golden Gate” é chamada de “laranja internacional”, que não se vende nas lojas, pois é única!..

..we crossed the bridge in both directions, stopping for a few hours on the other side, where there is a privileged observation point, to rest and admire the landscape!. Just one more detail, the color of the “Golden Gate Bridge” is called “international orange”, which is not sold in stores, as it is unique!.

…e, antes de continuar a nossa viajem rumo ao norte, olhando para trás deixando uma cidade habitada por pessoas com cultura e estilos um pouco acentuados, lembrámos um famoso cantor que nos deixou a canção, “I Left My Heart In San Francisco”, (deixei o meu coração em São Francisco), onde compara São Francisco a Paris, Roma ou Nova York, dizendo que é uma cidade animada e realista onde nos unimos à multidão, admirando as suas colinas, o colorido dos eléctricos nas rua, o mar ou até a neblina de São Francisco…, o que é verdade!.

…and, before continuing our journey towards the north, looking back leaving a city inhabited by people with a somewhat accentuated culture and styles, we remembered a famous singer who left us the song, “I Left My Heart In San Francisco”, where he compares San Francisco to Paris, Rome or New York, saying that it is a lively and realistic city where we join the crowd, admiring its hills, the colorful trams in the streets, the sea or even the fog of San Francisco…, which is true!.
