…hoje, nas 789 milhas percorridas nos estados de Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri e Kansas, e como era dia de feriado nacional, as estradas estavam um pouco lotadas!. Havia mesmo um acidente aparatoso na estrada rápida número 24 em Kentucky, onde pessoas sem uniforme começaram imediatamente a desviar o tráfico para outras estadas rurais o que nos levou por aproximadamente duas horas  a ter ainda mais contacto com a natureza pura, onde viajámos por áreas de campos de cereais, lagos, pequenas subidas, descidas e curvas apertadas frequentes, parecendo que andávamos num “carroucel”!. 

…today, in the 789 miles traveled in the states of Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri and Kansas, and as it was a national holiday, the roads were a little crowded!. There was even a huge accident on highway number 24 in Kentucky, where people without uniforms immediately began to divert traffic to other rural areas, which took us for approximately two hours to have even more contact with pure nature, where we traveled through areas of Cereal fields, lakes, small climbs, descents and frequent tight curves, making it seem like we were riding on a “carousel”!. 

…claro, como acima referimos já viajávamos pelo estado de Kentucky, que muitas pessoas acreditavam que a origem do nome do estado vinha de uma palavra “ameríndia” que significa “terreno de caça escuro e sangrento”, porém, actualmente, acredita-se que a palavra Kentucky possa ser atribuída a numerosos idiomas indígenas, com vários significados como por exemplo, “terra do amanhã”, “terra de cana e perus” ou “terras paradas”!.

…of course, as we mentioned above, we were already traveling through the state of Kentucky, which many people believed that the origin of the state’s name came from an “Amerindian” word that means “dark and bloody hunting ground”, however, currently, it is believed that The word Kentucky can be attributed to numerous indigenous languages, with various meanings such as “land of tomorrow”, “land of sugarcane and turkeys” or “still lands”!.

…continuando nesta mesma estrada rápida, atravessámos a ponte sobre o rio Ohio, entrando no estado de Illinois, onde, nesta parte sul do estado, frequentemente víamos algumas quintas rodeadas de campos de cultivo, pois a agricultura é uma importante fonte de renda, não só pelo seu terreno fértil e pouco acidentado, como também pelo seu clima altamente instável!.

 …continuing on this same fast road, we crossed the bridge over the Ohio River, entering the state of Illinois, where, in this southern part of the state, we often saw some farms surrounded by cultivated fields, as agriculture is an important source of income , not only because of its fertile and slightly rugged terrain, but also because of its highly unstable climate!. 

…com este cenário, chegámos ao cruzamento de estradas rápidas, onde termina a estrada 24, entrando na número 57, que vem do sul, e nos levaria à também estrada rápida número 64, seguindo em direcção ao oeste, ao qual sem o notar, estávamos seguindo o percurso que os missionários franceses fizeram muitos anos atrás, pois foram eles os  primeiros europeus a explorarem a região do actual estado de Illinois!.

…with this scenario, we arrived at the intersection of fast roads, where road 24 ends, entering number 57, which comes from the south, and would also take us to fast road number 64, heading towards the west, which without the Note, we were following the route that French missionaries took many years ago, as they were the first Europeans to explore the region of the current state of Illinois!.

…e nós, pensando na história e ouvindo alguma música, começámos a atravessar algumas pequenas, antigas ou grandes pontes, aproximando-nos da cidade de St. Louis, já no estado de Missouri, que também foi fundada pelos franceses, estando localizada na confluência do rio Mississippi e do rio Missouri, funcionando na altura como entreposto comercial.

…particularmente, encanta-nos a cidade de St. Louis, pois naquela época converteu-se em ponto de partida de exploradores do Oeste Americano e colonizadores que emigravam para Oeste e hoje, quem se aproxime da cidade, mesmo a muitas milhas de distância, pode avistar um cenário deslumbrante, onde sobressai o “Gateway Arch”, um monumento que identifica a cidade, que dizem que é o mais alto monumento em solo norte americano!. 

…in particular, we are enchanted by the city of St. Louis, as at that time it became a starting point for explorers of the American West and settlers who emigrated to the West and today, anyone who comes close to the city, even from many miles away, You can see a stunning scenery, where the “Gateway Arch” stands out, a monument that identifies the city, which is said to be the tallest monument on North American soil!. 

…continuámos a nossa jornada rumo ao Oeste!. Seguindo pela estrada rápida número 70, com longas zonas desertas, quintas abandonadas, aqui e ali, também podemos ver a típica casa de aldeia, com a cerca em volta do quintal, o cão preso a uma corrente, as vacas pastando, um pequeno quintal em redor da casa, um poço com uma “roldana”, próxima de um ribeiro, ou de um local onde existe água!.

…we continued our journey towards the West!. Following the fast road number 70, with long deserted areas, abandoned farms, here and there, we can also see the typical village house, with the fence around the yard, the dog tied to a chain, the cows grazing, a small yard Around the house, a well with a “pulley”, close to a stream, or a place where there is water!.

…às vezes são locais isolados, mas lá estão as árvores em seu redor, algumas já velhas, talvez da idade da casa!. Também existem algumas plantações de milho ou trigo, algumas manadas de vacas, áreas transformadas em zonas de caça, poços de petróleo trabalhando ou moinhos de energia movidos a vento!. Tudo isto até à cidade de Kansas, ainda no estado do Missouri, pois existem duas cidades com o nome Kansas, uma no estado de Missouri, outra no estado de Kansas!. 

…sometimes they are isolated places, but there are trees around them, some of them old, perhaps as old as the house! There are also some corn or wheat plantations, some herds of cows, areas transformed into hunting zones, working oil wells or wind-powered power mills!. All this until the city of Kansas, still in the state of Missouri, as there are two cities with the name Kansas, one in the state of Missouri, the other in the state of Kansas!. 

..depois de atravessar a cidade de Kansas continuámos a viajar pela estrada rápida número 70 e…, a noite ia-se aproximando!. Assim devido ao atraso pela manhã no desastre na estrada 24 no estado de Kentucky e também por ser dia de feriado nacional, os parques de RV estavam todos lotados e as nossas comunicações para encontrar um lugar tinham a mesma resposta, “desculpem estamos lotados”!. Resultado…, pernoitámos num modesto hotel, numa cidadezinha rural, já no estado de Kansas!.

…after crossing the city of Kansas we continued traveling along highway number 70 and…, night was approaching!. So due to the morning delay in the disaster on Highway 24 in the state of Kentucky and also because it was a national holiday, the RV parks were all full and our communications to find a place had the same response, “sorry we are full”! . Result…, we stayed the night in a modest hotel, in a small rural town, in the state of Kansas!.
