…coisas da vida!. (…things in life)!.

…alguém lá esteve e entendeu que era uma oportunidade fotográfica e reuniu os monarcas para esta imagem histórica, e nós…, um dia destes encontrámo-la!. Claro, não resistimos a falar dela!. Está lá a realeza Europeia, e foi tirada em Londres no ano de 1910 e mostra os nove monarcas reinantes que estiveram presentes durante o enterro do rei Eduardo VII!. Possivelmente é a única fotografia de todos os nove reis existentes e também lá está um do país onde nascemos, que era o Rei Manuel II de Portugal e Algarve!.

…someone was there and understood that it was a photographic opportunity and brought together the monarchs for this historic image, and we…, one of these days we found it!. Of course, we couldn’t resist talking about her! European royalty is there, and was taken in London in 1910 and shows the nine reigning monarchs who were present during the burial of King Edward VII!. It is possibly the only photograph of all nine existing kings and there is also one from the country where we were born, who was King Manuel II of Portugal and Algarve!.

…e, companheiros de jornada, lá para o ano de três mil e tal os livros de história que ainda existirem, vão lembrar que havia os reis de bigodes e barbas encaracoladas que eram senhores de muitas terras e tinham escravos a quem chamavam servos e passavam a vida entre outras coisas…, talvez na companhia das moças bonitas que por lá existiam ao redor, ou a fazer guerras e…, quando batiam com o pé no chão faziam tremer todo o palácio!.

…and, companions on the journey, back in the year three thousand or so, the history books that still exist will remember that there were kings with mustaches and curly beards who were masters of many lands and had slaves whom they called servants and passed life among other things…, perhaps in the company of the beautiful girls that were around, or fighting wars and…, when they stamped their feet on the ground they made the entire palace shake!.

…mas ninguém se vai lembrar do Zé Magro que passou a vida a plantar couves na terra arrendada ao senhor dono da aldeia, ou…, da minha saudosa e virtuosa avó Agar que tirou um retrato descalça, com uma saia feita de “borel” amarrada com uma cinta escura de linho e uma camisa do mesmo linho, mas de cor quase branca, sentada num banco de três pernas, junto de um caneco de barro com flores silvestres apanhadas na beira do caminho!. 

…but no one will remember Zé Magro who spent his life planting cabbages on the land rented from the owner of the village, or…, my late and virtuous grandmother Agar who took a portrait barefoot, with a skirt made of “borel” tied with a dark linen belt and a shirt made of the same linen, but almost white in color, sitting on a three-legged stool, next to a clay mug with wild flowers picked on the side of the path!.

..porquê?. Porque eram pobres, pessoas de muitos bons sentimentos, ajudavam todas as pessoas em desgraça e nunca maltrataram ou feriram alguém!.

..why?. Because they were poor, people with many good feelings, they helped everyone in misfortune and never mistreated or hurt anyone!

…Centro Geográfico da America do Norte!. (…Geographical Center of North America)!.

…o tempo está a ficar mais moderado, no entanto ainda não usamos “roupas leves”, mas vamos resistindo a este inverno mais frio dos últimos anos, pelo menos por aqui no sul deste continente onde alguém diz que descobriu o seu “centro”!.

…the weather is getting more moderate, however we still don’t wear “light clothes”, but we are resisting this coldest winter in recent years, at least here in the south of this continent where someone says they have discovered its “center”!.

…enfim…, são opiniões!. As notícias não sendo animadoras dizem-nos que no oriente um dos contundentes talvez interrompa temporariamente os combates em Gaza, e claro, algumas vidas serão poupadas, principalmente crianças e…, o lado menos mau é que ainda vão existindo alguns bisontes e cavalos selvagens nas pradarias do norte e nós…, consideramo-nos uns previlegiados porque já tivemos a felicidade de por lá caminhar junto a eles!.

…anyway…, these are opinions! The news, which is not encouraging, tells us that in the east one of the attacks may temporarily interrupt the fighting in Gaza, and of course, some lives will be spared, mainly children and…, the less bad side is that there will still be some bison and wild horses in the prairies of the north and we…, we consider ourselves privileged because we have already had the happiness of walking there alongside them!.

…vamos então à história de hoje!. 

…estávamos na cidade de Fargo, no estado de Norte Dakota e,… depois de visitar a cidade, viajámos por uma estrada quase deserta no sentido oeste, tentando seguir a rota transcontinental do Grande Norte que vai mais ou menos desde a cidade de Saint Paul, Minnesota, até Seattle, Washington, parando numa pequena cidade para nos abastecer de gasolina, água e alguns biscoitos!.

…so let’s get to today’s story!

…we were in the city of Fargo, in the state of North Dakota and,… after visiting the city, we traveled along an almost deserted road heading west, trying to follow the transcontinental route of the Great North that goes more or less from the city of Saint Paul , Minnesota, to Seattle, Washington, stopping in a small town to fill up with gas, water and some cookies!.

…na qual nos disseram que no ano de 1931, um funcionário do Escritório de Pesquisa Geodésica dos EUA, entediado talvez, ou tentando justificar o seu emprego durante a Grande Depressão, colocou um recorte de papelão do mapa do Canadá, dos EUA e do México na ponta dum lápis!. O local onde se equilibrou uniformemente foi determinado no condado de Pierce, Dakota do Norte, a sudoeste da cidade grande mais próxima, que era RUGBY, onde nos encontrávamos naquele momento!. 

…in which we are told that in the year 1931, an employee of the US Bureau of Geodetic Survey, bored perhaps, or trying to justify his job during the Great Depression, placed a cardboard cutout of the map of Canada, the US and Mexico at the tip of a pencil! The location where it balanced evenly was determined in Pierce County, North Dakota, southwest of the nearest large city, which was RUGBY, where we were at that time!.

…como tal, podíamos dizer em termos gerais, que nos encontrávamos no centro da América do Norte!.

…e esta ofuscação dos detalhes beneficiou aquela cidade, que dava pelo nome de RUGBY, dando-lhe a liberdade de erguer um monumento em qualquer local que considerassem ideal para os turistas!. Foi imediatamente determinado que esse local era no principal entroncamento rodoviário da cidade, onde a Estrada # 2 leste-oeste dos EUA se cruza com a Estrada estadual # 3 norte-sul!.

…and this obfuscation of details benefited that city, which was called RUGBY, giving it the freedom to erect a monument in any location they considered ideal for tourists)!. It was immediately determined that this location was at the city’s main highway junction, where east-west U.S. Highway #2 intersects with north-south State Road #3!.

…a partir desse momento a cidade passou a considerar-se o centro geográfico da América do Norte, e não há dúvida de que esta cidade centro-norte de Dakota do Norte, hoje é um centro de atividades e atrações, começando com o monumento que a proclama como o Centro Geográfico da América do Norte!. 

…from that moment on, the city began to consider itself the geographic center of North America, and there is no doubt that this north-central North Dakota city is today a center of activities and attractions, starting with the monument that proclaims it as the Geographic Center of North America!.

…andámos por lá e vimos um monumento em forma de pirâmide com 21 pés de altura, 6 pés de largura e a sua base e está assentada em formato de coração!.

…we walked there and saw a monument in the shape of a pyramid 21 feet high, 6 feet wide and its base is set in the shape of a heart!.
