…nos últimos anos e quando a saúde nos permitia, aproveitávamos para percorrer alguns parques nacionais, fazer passeios panorâmicos apreciando vistas deslumbrantes, ali mesmo à beira da estrada, tal como se vêem em alguns filmes de Hollywood, porque os USA são o lar espiritual das viagem rodoviárias!. 

…in recent years and when our health allowed us, we took the opportunity to visit some national parks, take scenic walks enjoying stunning views, right there on the side of the road, as seen in some Hollywood films, because the USA is the spiritual home of road trip!.

…e, íamos percorrendo algumas estradas panorâmicas com as suas longas rectas desaparecendo lá no horizonte, onde por vezes se encontra uma cordilheira de montanhas com neve ou…, atravessando a hoje famosa, lendária e histórica “Route 66”, mostrando-nos aldeias e pequenas vilas com “lanchonetes” à beira da estrada e motéis tal como eram há muitas dezenas de anos!.

…and, we were traveling along some panoramic roads with their long straights disappearing into the horizon, where sometimes you can find a mountain range with snow or…, crossing the now famous, legendary and historic “Route 66”, showing us villages and small villages with roadside “snack bars” and motels just as they were many decades ago!.

…e nós, parando aqui e ali, ouvindo música, bebendo café, comendo biscoitos ou fruta, e claro, lembrando aquela família que nos anos trinta do século passado, para se prepararem para a sua viagem até à Califórnia, meteram tudo da sua quinta num calhambeque de 50 dólares, matando os seus dois últimos porcos para fazer um barril de carne de porco salgada, para alimentar as muitas pessoas da família mais o seu cão, que viajavam a bordo do seu calhambeque!.

…and we, stopping here and there, listening to music, drinking coffee, eating cookies or fruit, and of course, remembering that family that in the thirties of the last century, to prepare for their trip to California, put everything on their farm in a 50 dollar jalopy, killing his last two pigs to make a barrel of salt pork, to feed the many people in the family plus his dog, who traveled aboard his jalopy!.

…porque na verdade não há nada mais americano do que conduzir pela estrada mais icónica do mundo que foi concluída na década de 1920 e foi usada durante o “Dust Bowl”, quando uma onda de pessoas migrou para o oeste!. Para nós era a oportunidade de conhecer partes da América que estão presas no tempo!. E…, o mais importante é que, viajar pela a Route 66 é…, ser livre!.

…because there is truly nothing more American than driving along the most iconic road in the world that was completed in the 1920s and was used during the “Dust Bowl” when a wave of people migrated west!. For us it was the opportunity to discover parts of America that are trapped in time! And…, the most important thing is that, traveling along Route 66 is…, being free!.

…e, além de termos feito o seu trajecto completo, começando na  Adams Street, na cidade de Chicago, estado de Illinois, através dos estados de Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Novo México e Arizona antes de terminar na Santa Monica Pier, no Condado de Los Angeles, Califórnia, cobrindo um total de 2.448 milhas (3.940 km), já por outras vezes repetimos pequenos ou longos trajectos desta hoje famosa e histórica estrada, porque na realidade, nunca se deve perder a oportunidade de conduzir num qualquer trecho da “The Mother Road – Route 66!.

…na cultura popular, foi reconhecida por músicas, romances, livros, filmes ou séries de TV, por vezes simbolizando “a fuga ou a perda”, no entanto, sempre servirá como uma lembrança do tamanho da América, que ainda vai parando nas “lanchonetes clássicas” e outras atrações à beira da estrada, vislumbrando um caminho que não se deve perder!.

…esta hoje histórica e lendária estrada, serviu como rota principal para aqueles que migraram para o oeste, especialmente durante a grande depressão do ‘“Dust Bowl dos anos 30”, tornando-se no “Caminho de Voo” ajudando a transformar o oeste americano de uma fronteira isolada, em uma região economicamente vital, tornando-a acessível a qualquer pessoa que viajasse de carro, sustentando as economias das comunidades pelas quais passava, onde as pessoas faziam negócios ao longo da sua rota!.

…this now historic and legendary road served as the main route for those who migrated west, especially during the great depression of the ’30s’ Dust Bowl, becoming the “Path of Flight” helping to transform the American West from an isolated border, in an economically vital region, making it accessible to anyone traveling by car, supporting the economies of the communities it passed through, where people did business along its route!.

…porque ela foi uma das primeiras rodovias no sistema rodoviário americano, que mudou completamente a maneira como as pessoas abordavam as viagens e…, continua sendo muito mais do que uma laje de asfalto que liga Chicago e Santa Monica. E…, o lema é: “Vá em frente, solte o cabelo e coloque o cinto de segurança!. Torne a sua viagem inesquecível mergulhando em cidades únicas, maravilhas naturais e comidas saborosas encontradas ao longo desta hoje famosa, lendária e histórica estrada”!.

…because it was one of the first highways in the American highway system, which completely changed the way people approached travel and…, it remains much more than a slab of asphalt connecting Chicago and Santa Monica. …mas na realidade, fomos realmente felizes…, com tanta carência?. Não tínhamos as tecnologias, os objectos, a cultura, os fogões, os frigoríficos, o aquecimento central, o ar condicionado, os automóveis, os computadores, as viagens pelo mundo, o acesso ao progresso e às oportunidades com que hoje a todo o momento tropeçamos!. 

…but in reality, we were really happy…, with so much need?. We didn’t have the technologies, the objects, the culture, the stoves, the refrigerators, the central heating, the air conditioning, the cars, the computers, the trips around the world, the access to progress and the opportunities with which today at all times we stumbled!.

…podemos realmente recordar alguns momentos mais felizes mas…, na nossa juventude os dias ligavam-se numa faina interminável e, a Igreja com o seu poderio reinava, orientando as famílias para o bem, ameaçando com o inferno aqueles que sonhavam ir mais além das regras impostas por uma sociedade feudal, porque o pecado dominava as mentes ou o medo dele…, desde o nascer até ao fim da vida!.

…we can really remember some happier moments but…, in our youth the days were connected in an endless task and the Church with its power reigned, guiding families towards good, threatening with hell those who dreamed of going beyond rules imposed by a feudal society, because sin dominated the minds or fear of it…, from birth to the end of life!.

…assim, num regime colonial onde os governantes nos diziam que eram os pais da nação, com uma população pobre e quase toda rural, que afogava as mágoas nos balcões das tavernas, contando sempre as mesmas histórias, repetidas vezes sem conta, que eram as doenças, as mortes ou a pobreza desmedida em que viviam, e mesmo assim, a comunidade ia sobrevivendo, sempre com um sorriso nos lábios e a cantar…, pelo menos nos dias de romaria!.

…so, in a colonial regime where the rulers told us they were the fathers of the nation, with a poor and almost entirely rural population, who drowned their sorrows on the counters of taverns, always telling the same stories, over and over again, which were the illnesses, deaths or the extreme poverty in which they lived, and even so, the community was surviving, always with a smile on its lips and singing…, at least on the days of pilgrimage!.

…ali, nas ditas tavernas, jogavam às cartas e punham a conversa em dia!. Tudo em redor de uma mesa, conversava-se e decidia-se quando os copos já faziam efeito, mas sempre com um petisco pela frente, porque os petiscos eram uma das culturas e tradições mais marcantes da sociedade de então e…, os pratos eram invariávelmente pequenos, tal como os talheres, porque um garfo de ferro e um pedaço de pão cortado pela “navalha petisqueira”, eram o suficiente para levar o petisco à boca!.

…there, in the so-called taverns, they played cards and caught up with the conversation!. All around a table, people talked and decided when the glasses had already taken effect, but always with a snack in front of them, because snacks were one of the most important cultures and traditions of society at the time and…, the dishes were invariably small, such as cutlery, because an iron fork and a piece of bread cut by the “snack razor”, were enough to bring the snack to the mouth!.

…uns anos mais tarde, com o aparecimento das fábricas e o aumento de alguma produção agrícola, as condições de vida melhoraram…, passando a haver menos fome, no entanto, os vegetais eram a base da alimentação, tal como o pão de milho ou centeio, as azeitonas, algum bacalhau ou sardinha, vinho e sopa feita de batatas e legumes frescos, e claro, temperada com azeite!. Depois, a pouco e pouco, já iam comprando café ou arroz e os enchidos ou alguma ave de capoeira, entraram  na alimentação…, pelo menos em dias festivos!. 

…a few years later, with the appearance of factories and the increase of some agricultural production, living conditions improved…, with less hunger, however, vegetables were the basis of food, such as corn bread or rye, olives, some cod or sardines, wine and soup made from potatoes and fresh vegetables, and of course, seasoned with olive oil!. Then, little by little, they started buying coffee or rice and sausages or some poultry, they entered the diet…, at least on festive days!.

…praticava-se um regime alimentar muito pobre em proteínas, assim era frequente haver doenças, porque a carne era um luxo e só era comida de tempos a tempos e por quem tinha algumas posses, mas na realidade, vivia-se com grandes dificuldades e o pouco dinheiro que havia servia apenas para comprar o tal café, azeite, sardinha, sal ou sabão e…, a história dizia que nessa época “uma sardinha era para três pessoas”!.

…a diet very low in protein was practiced, so there were often illnesses, because meat was a luxury and was only eaten from time to time and by those who had some possessions, but in reality, people lived with great difficulties and the little money there was used only to buy that coffee, olive oil, sardines, salt or soap and…, the story said that at that time “a sardine was for three people”!.

…já o repetimos algumas vezes nos nossos escritos que na realidade…, nós não nascemos crianças, éramos apenas mais dois braços para trabalhar, mais um futuro para os nossos pais em fim de vida, mais gente para desbravar as terras secas do pinhal e mais vozes para cantar em tempo de colheitas!.

…we have already repeated it a few times in our writings that in reality…, we were not born children, we were just two more arms to work with, one more future for our parents at the end of their lives, more people to explore the dry lands of the pine forest and more voices to sing in harvest time!.

…porque afinal, os meninos eram homens com calos nas mãos, pés descalços e um pedaço de broa no bolso das calças remendadas e, as meninas eram mulheres de tranças feitas ao domingo de manhã antes da missa, de saias de cotim, braços cansados de dar colo aos irmãos mais novos e de rodilha na cabeça para aguentar o peso dos alguidares de roupa para lavar no rio ou dos molhos de erva para alimentar o gado!.

…because after all, the boys were men with calluses on their hands, bare feet and a piece of bread in the pocket of their mended pants, and the girls were women with braids done on Sunday mornings before mass, in cotton skirts, arms tired of give your younger brothers a lap and a roller on your head to support the weight of laundry bowls to wash in the river or bunches of grass to feed the cattle!.

…nós vivemos assim nos primeiros anos da nossa juventude, no entanto, alguns anos passados apareceram os Cafés e a Televisão em algumas localidades, e claro, foi uma evolução em relação às tabernas, onde também se vendia vinho e tabaco mas com a inovação, talvez para  alargar a sua clientela às gerações mais novas e ofereciam uma série de produtos que não existiam nas tabernas, como “bolos, café, garotos, galões ou meias de leite”!.

…we lived like this in the early years of our youth, however, a few years later Cafés and Television appeared in some locations, and of course, it was an evolution in relation to the taverns, where wine and tobacco were also sold but with innovation, perhaps to expand their clientele to the younger generations and offered a series of products that did not exist in taverns, such as “cakes, coffee, boys, gallons or milk socks”!.

…e o aparecimento da Televisão transportou consigo uma época de ouro para os tais cafés, que vieram revolucionar a vida de algumas comunidades, porque tinham um espaço mais moderno com uma dimensão superior às tavernas que o povo estava habituado, onde havia momentos especiais, principalmente aos sábados e domingos com transmissão de filmes de cowbóis, desportos, noticiários com informação do governo e outras actividades!.

…and the appearance of Television brought with it a golden age for those cafés, which came to revolutionize the life of some communities, because they had a more modern space with a dimension superior to the taverns that the people were used to, where there were special moments, mainly on Saturdays and Sundays with transmission of cowboy films, sports, news with government information and other activities!.

…depois…, depois os governantes diziam na dita Televisão do estado, “vamos para a guerra já e em força”, e claro, veio a mobilização forçada para a maldita Guerra Colonial em África, onde passámos dois longos anos e que destruiu parte da nossa geração, marcando-a em toda a sua plenitude, tal um “ferrete em braza”, que penetrou nas mais íntimas entranhas do nosso já frágil corpo, para o resto das nossas vidas!.

…then…, then the rulers said on the so-called State Television, “we are going to war now and in force”, and of course, came the forced mobilization for the damned Colonial War in Africa, where we spent two long years and which destroyed part of the our generation, marking it in all its fullness, like a “hot iron”, which penetrated the most intimate entrails of our already fragile body, for the rest of our lives!.

…e hoje, muitos desses companheiros combatentes, mantendo ainda o orgulho de terem defendido a bandeira da sua Pátria, alguns vivem abandonados, dormindo debaixo de pontes e outras estrocturas, num completo desprezo, principalmente das novas gerações, incluindo os responsáveis pelos diferentes governos que têm dirigido os destinos desse país “à beira mar plantado”, que dá pelo nome de Portugal!.

…and today, many of these fellow fighters, still proud of having defended the flag of their homeland, some live abandoned, sleeping under bridges and other structures, in complete contempt, especially of the new generations, including those responsible for the different governments that have directed the destinations of that country “by the sea planted”, which goes by the name of Portugal!.

…depois e para terminar…, vindos de África daquela maldita guerra, regressámos à Europa como veteranos de guerra, passando por algumas experiências de vida mais traumáticas que se possam imaginar!. A família e os vizinhos que nos receberam, sabiam, notavam imediatamente que alguma coisa estava mal connosco, pela nossa linguagem e maneira de nos comportar, que estávamos diferentes, talvez um pouco loucos e algo agressivos, no entanto, felizmente encontrámos a nossa “cara metade”, a dedicada esposa Isaura, casámos e imigrámos, constituindo a nossa própria família de quem muito nos orgulhamos, claro, vivendo já noutro continente!.

…then and finally…, coming from Africa from that cursed war, we returned to Europe as war veterans, going through some of the most traumatic life experiences imaginable!. The family and neighbors who received us, knew, noticed immediately, that something was wrong with us, due to our language and way of behaving, that we were different, perhaps a little crazy and a little aggressive, however, fortunately we found our “better half”, the dedicated wife Isaura, we got married and immigrated, constituting our own family of whom we are very proud, of course, already living on another continent)!.

…hoje, neste dia de Setembro completamos mais um ano de vida!. Obrigado a todos pelos votos de que este dia se vá repetindo!. Trago-vos no coração!.

…todos estes anos vividos dizem-nos que não devemos ficar lastimados com os resultados que não conseguimos…, com o trabalho que não fizemos!. Como tal, devemos ficar contentes com tudo o que conseguimos…, com o trabalho que fizemos!.

…all these years lived tell us that we shouldn’t be saddened by the results we didn’t achieve…, by the work we didn’t do!. As such, we must be happy with everything we have achieved…, with the work we have done!.

…já estamos na primeira parte dos “oitentas”, vivendo quase de “lembranças” e…, quando iniciávamos uma qualquer tarefa, era com um fim em mente, definindo os seus objectivos e aspirações principais, levando essa obra ou simplesmente sonho, a sério, vivendo uma vida que hoje vale a pena lembrar, tentando alcançar os resultados dos quais sentimos algum orgulho, sabendo sempre que era necessário trabalhar muito e nunca desistir, porque tudo o que vale a pena fazer, não é fácil nem rápido!. 

…we are already in the first part of our “eighties”, living almost on “memories” and…, when we started any task, it was with an end in mind, defining our main objectives and aspirations, taking that work or simply dream, seriously , living a life that is worth remembering today, trying to achieve results that we feel some pride in, always knowing that it was necessary to work hard and never give up, because everything that is worth doing is not easy or quick!.

…usámos quase todas as oportunidades que a vida nos ofereceu, porque o pensamento não nos ia levar para longe do lugar em que estávamos, no entanto as acções iam, como tal, sempre que tivemos uma oportunidade que nos podia levar para mais perto das nossas aspirações, aproveitávamos, porque realizar os nossos sonhos era difícil, mas viver uma vida medíocre era fácil, no entanto, era muito improvável que essa vida medíocre e fácil, fosse um veículo para trazer até nós as tais lembranças de que hoje nos orgulhamos!.

…we used almost every opportunity that life offered us, because thought would not take us far from the place we were in, however actions would, as such, whenever we had an opportunity that could take us closer of our aspirations, we took advantage, because realizing our dreams was difficult, but living a mediocre life was easy, however, it was very unlikely that this mediocre and easy life would be a vehicle to bring to us the memories that we are proud of today !.

…e para terminar, continuamos a ser felizes com aquilo que temos, sem nunca desejar ter o que o outro tem, sabendo que para isso se tem que trabalhar duro, tal como sempre fizemos, claro, ajudados, motivados e compreendidos pela nossa dedicada esposa Isaura, quando ainda estávamos activos, fazendo parte do mercado de trabalho e…, foi assim que criámos e educámos a nossa família, de que muito nos orgulhamos!.

…a manhã estava agradável, corria uma leve brisa e o céu estava limpo!. Era um cenário que contrariava os efeitos das alterações climáticas que não dão tréguas ao resto do mundo, onde nas últimas semanas por aqui e por ali se formam tempestades, existem nuvens de poeira no deserto do Sara que se dirigem para o Norte e…, o alerta para uma onda de calor que atinge muitas regiões do globo faz a vida impossível a milhões de pessoas!.

…the morning was pleasant, there was a light breeze and the sky was clear!. It was a scenario that contradicted the effects of climate change that do not give truce to the rest of the world, where in recent weeks storms have formed here and there, there are clouds of dust in the Sahara desert that are heading north and…, the alert to a heat wave that hits many regions of the globe making life impossible for millions of people!.

…uff, vamos deixar as catástrofes por alguns momentos e, enquanto isso não acontece por aqui, vamos contar o que de bom nos aconteceu num dia destes, quando visitamos mais uma vez um lugar ainda selvagem, que dá pelo nome de “Lugar Preservado da Princesa”, porque algumas vezes já explicamos que somos “fotógrafos amadores às quintas-feiras e contadores de histórias aos domingos”!.

…uff, let’s leave the catastrophes for a few moments and, while that doesn’t happen around here, let’s tell what good happened to us on one of these days, when we visited once again a still wild place, which goes by the name of “Preservation Place of Princess”, because sometimes we have already explained that we are “amateur photographers on Thursdays and storytellers on Sundays”)!.

…este lugar ainda selvagem tem uma história muito rica, num cenário exótico de beleza natural, onde outrora também foi cenário de índios americanos, assentamentos coloniais, guerras, servos, magnatas, casamentos, divórcios, amor, ódios, príncipes e princesas, tudo passado neste maravilhoso local, situado na parte norte do concelho de Flagler, mais propriamente na confluência do hoje Riacho Pellicer e do Rio Matanzas!. 

…this still wild place has a very rich history, in an exotic setting of natural beauty, where once it was also the scene of American Indians, colonial settlements, wars, serfs, tycoons, marriages, divorces, love, hatred, princes and princesses, everything in the past in this wonderful place, located in the northern part of the municipality of Flagler, more precisely at the confluence of today’s Riacho Pellicer and the Matanzas River!.

…a sua história diz que tudo começou por volta do final do século dezassete, quando uma parcela de mais de mil acres foi concedida como uma concessão de terras espanholas a Francisco Pellicer, homem nascido em Minorca, que é uma das ilhas Baleares de Espanha, no mar Mediterrâneo, que por aqui chegou, contratado como servo mas, tal como outros  chegados da Europa, este, exercendo a profissão de agricultor e carpinteiro, prosperou no Novo Mundo!. 

…his story goes that it all started around the end of the seventeenth century, when a plot of over a thousand acres was granted as a Spanish land grant to Francisco Pellicer, a man born in Minorca, which is one of the Balearic Islands of Spain, in the Mediterranean Sea, who arrived here, hired as a servant but, like other arrivals from Europe, this one, exercising the profession of farmer and carpenter, prospered in the New World!.

…Francisco Pellicer, por um período de quase quarenta anos, por aqui viveu com sua família, cultivando milho, cana e algodão, cujas culturas, uns anos mais tarde foram destruídas e queimadas durante as Guerras Indianas, que foram uma trama ou mesmo uma conspiração, depende do que lhe queiram chamar, que também ficaram conhecidas como “Cherokee Grove”!. 

...Francisco Pellicer, for a period of almost forty years, lived here with his family, growing corn, sugar cane and cotton, whose crops, a few years later, were destroyed and burned during the Indian Wars, which were a plot or even a conspiracy, depends on what you want to call it, which also became known as “Cherokee Grove”!.

…entretanto, um tal Henry Cutting, com apenas 24 anos, que era um rico descendente dos holandeses que compraram Manhattan, lá no norte, em Nova York, estabeleceu-se por aqui com um dos primeiros laranjais na Flórida e, já por volta do final do século dezoito, comprou “Cherokee Grove” e várias parcelas adjacentes para aumentar a sua propriedade para os aproximadamente 1.500 acres, que hoje são a dimensão deste maravilhoso cenário de beleza natural, dizendo que neste maravilhoso cenário iria construir um pavilhão de caça!. 

…however, a certain Henry Cutting, only 24 years old, who was a wealthy descendant of the Dutch who bought Manhattan, up north, in New York, established himself here with one of the first orange groves in Florida and, for Around the end of the eighteenth century, he purchased “Cherokee Grove” and several adjacent parcels to increase his property to approximately 1,500 acres, which today is the size of this wonderful setting of natural beauty, saying that in this wonderful setting he would build a hunting lodge!.

…e, querendo dar um ar tropical, para receber os seus hóspedes, plantou uma linha de palmeiras emparelhadas, que hoje combina perfeitamente com os carvalhos gigantescos e centenários, cobertos de musgo e envoltos em videiras selvagens, iniciando assim uma história nesta área, outrora habitada pelos índios americanos Cherokee, onde entraram príncipes e princesas!. 

…and, wanting to give a tropical feel to welcome his guests, he planted a line of paired palm trees, which today combine perfectly with the gigantic and centenary oaks, covered in moss and wrapped in wild vines, thus starting a story in this area, once inhabited by the Cherokee American Indians, where princes and princesses entered!.

…porquê?. Porque Henry Cutting, trouxe a sua noiva de nome Angela para cá, casando-se por volta do ano de 1888, ano em que o seu pavilhão de caça, que era uma autêntica pousada terminou!. Ela, a Angela, adorou conviver e hospedar os seus amigos de Nova York mas, quatro anos depois, após a morte repentina de Henry Cutting, a Angela realizou um seu novo casamento com um magnata de Nova York!. 

…why?. Because Henry Cutting brought his bride named Angela here, getting married around the year 1888, the year in which his hunting lodge, which was an authentic inn, ended!. She, Angela, loved hanging out and hosting her New York friends, but four years later, after the sudden death of Henry Cutting, Angela remarried to a New York tycoon!.

…cujo casamento durou pouco mais de um ano que, após um divórcio rancoroso, ela a Angela, passados três anos casou de novo, agora com um príncipe russo exilado, de nome Boris Sherbatow, ganhando o título de princesa!. O agora “casal real”, viveu no ainda “Cherokee Grove”, que foi sua casa por duas décadas e meia e, quando ela, a Angela, se tornou mais princesa real do que o príncipe Boris, logo este maravilhoso cenário de palmeiras, carvalhos gigantescos e centenários, cobertos de musgo e envoltos em videiras selvagens, ficou conhecido como “Lugar da Princesa”, enquanto isso, juntos, ele e a Angela, entretinham outros membros da realeza e a sociedade internacional, aqui no agora “Lugar da Princesa”!.

…e, um dia destes referindo um escrito nosso dizia-nos: “amigo Tony, tu que estás vocacionado para esta escrita tão sensivel, podias dar uma achega, e comparar o tratamento que os USA dão aos seus veteranos, em comparação com o tratamento que os nossos sucessivos governos, nos têm dado, uma vergonha!. Há veteranos que são actualmente sem abrigo, não há local para albergar muitos idosos, que combateram por Portugal, com todas as suas forças e coragem”!.

…sim, somos muito sensíveis a esse pormenor do “tratamento dos veteranos após a guerra”!. É um assunto bastante melindroso, muito difícil de comparação, no entanto varia do facto consoante dos países envolvidos, o motivo da origem do conflito, a causa do envolvimento ou ainda de outros factores!.

…e, no caso da Guerra Colonial Portuguesa, apesar de todos nós veteranos combatentes, sabermos que envolveu um governo então colonialista Europeu, que nos arrancou das nossas aldeias, vilas ou cidades e nos forçou a ir combater pessoas que lutavam e morriam pela liberdade e independência do seu território, que nós oriundos da Europa, nunca antes tínhamos visto e nada tínhamos em contra, largando-nos naquela horrorosa guerra de guerrilha que fomos forçados a viver lá em África, onde às vezes parecia que nos estávamos movendo para trás!.

…e, ainda hoje, e já lá vão mais de cinquenta anos, quase sessenta, o nosso cérebro vincula fortes respostas emocionais a essa experiência de combate, desencadeando uma cascata de respostas que pensávamos que foram úteis no campo de batalha, mas não agora, na vida real, que só nos trazem sofrimento e muito!. E era agora que alguns veteranos precisavam de auxilio, mas infelizmente parece essa ajuda não acontece, pelo menos em Portugal!. 

...and even today, and it’s been more than fifty years, almost sixty, our brain links strong emotional responses to that combat experience, triggering a cascade of responses that we thought were useful on the battlefield, but weren’t. now, in real life, that only bring us suffering and a lot!. And it was now that some veterans needed help, but unfortunately it seems that help does not happen, at least in Portugal!.

…e, tal como o amigo e veterano combatente “Roger” nos solicita, por aqui nos USA, o “Veterano de Guerra”, não importa em que guerra combateu é muito respeitado!. Vamos então exemplificar um pouco o que por aqui acontece, dando como exemplo a “Guerra do Vietname”, que aconteceu mais ou menos na mesma época e onde convivemos com alguns companheiros quando ainda fazíamos parte do mercado de trabalho e, que com quem constantemente falávamos!.

…ou quando, no dia seguinte, 49 destes caças levantaram voo da base de Da Nang, para atacar alvos do Vietname do Norte, fazendo com que a partir desse dia, a guerra não ficasse mais restrita ao território do Vietname do Sul e o primeiro desembarque de 3.500 soldados americanos em Março, naquele território, já se havia transformado em 200 mil em Dezembro do mesmo ano e, quando em 1973, as tropas americanas se retiraram do conflito, havia cerca de 58 mil soldados americanos mortos!.

…foi uma guerra de guerrilha mortífera, onde o Jack, 1.º cabo do Corpo de Marines, que nasceu no estado do Wyoming e depois de fazer dois “tours” de seis meses cada àquela guerra, regressou ao continente americano, continuou no Corpo de Marines seguindo a carreira militar, pois as suas possibilidades de sobrevivência nas planícies do Wyoming eram montar um cavalo durante todo o dia, guardando manadas de vacas ou cavalos, comendo carne de algum animal que tivesse que ser abatido!.

…it was a deadly guerrilla war, where Jack, 1st Corporal of the Marine Corps, who was born in the state of Wyoming and after making two “tours” of six months each to that war, returned to the American continent, continued in the Corps of Marines following a military career, as their chances of survival on the plains of Wyoming were riding a horse all day, guarding herds of cows or horses, eating meat from any animal that had to be slaughtered!.

…no entanto, o jovem Smith, soldado do Alabama, que foi ferido em combate e transferido para o hospital militar de Saigon, fazia-se transportar numa cadeira de rodas, orgulhando-se de ser combatente, dizendo mesmo, que não se queixava do destino, pois criou a sua família e sempre foi ajudado pelo governo, que lhe proporcionou algum conforto no meio da sua vida de pessoa com alguma desvantagem!. E mesmo o John, soldado ferido em combate, onde posteriormente lhe foi amputado um membro superior, não queria qualquer ajuda, mudando ele mesmo a roda do seu carro!.

…como tal, o Jack de Wyoming, seguiu a carreira militar sendo um veterano que se encontrava estável na vida!. O jovem Smith do Alabama e o John, também tiveram toda a assistência de que necessitavam, tal como outros veteranos, foram sempre encorajados na procura de trabalho, na compra de casa e outros bens!. Existe mesmo um Banco dos Veteranos, que lhes facilitava e continua a facilitar empréstimos para compra de habitação ou qualquer outro investimento!. 

…as such, Jack from Wyoming, followed his military career being a veteran who was stable in life!. Young Smith from Alabama and John, also had all the assistance they needed, like other veterans, they were always encouraged in looking for work, buying a house and other assets!. There is even a Veterans Bank, which facilitated and continues to facilitate loans for the purchase of housing or any other investment!.

…são preferidos e respeitados, por vezes basta dizer que são veteranos, para algumas portas se abrirem e os ainda sobreviventes da guerra do Vietname têm assistência, existem os Hospitais dos Veteranos, localizados nas principais cidades de quase todos os estados, têm ajudas relativas em algum caso de necessidade extrema e acima de tudo, orgulhavam-se quando começávamos qualquer conversação, pois as primeiras palavras eram em dizer, que não queriam nem ouvir a palavra, “Vietnam Syndrome”, levantavam a cabeça e falavam bem alto, que eram “veteranos de guerra”!.

…they are preferred and respected, sometimes it is enough to say that they are veterans, for some doors to open and the survivors of the Vietnam War are assisted, there are Veterans Hospitals, located in the main cities of almost all states, they have relative help in some case of extreme need and above all, they were proud when we started any conversation, because the first words were to say, that they did not even want to hear the word, “Vietnam Syndrome”, they raised their heads and spoke very loudly, that they were “ war veterans”!.

…claro, também existem excepções como em tudo na vida, há aqueles que procuram ser livres, onde o seu orgulho de “veterano de guerra” é tão forte que não lhes permite receber ordens de estranhos ou conviver com alguma sociedade, e esses…, recebem a sua pensão e também andam por aí, no entanto, muitos não recebem esmolas ou auxilio de estranhos, empurram um carrinho de um qualquer supermercado onde levam todo o seu património, normalmente são acompanhados por um animal de estimação que lhes faz companhia, que pode ser um cão ou um gato, e quando necessitam de assistência, normalmente dirigem-se ao edificio da Perfeitura da Cidade ou ao Hospital dos Veteranos e são recebidos com dignidade!.

…of course, there are also exceptions as in everything in life, there are those who seek to be free, where their pride as a “war veteran” is so strong that it does not allow them to take orders from strangers or live with some society, and those…, receive their pension and also walk around, however, many do not receive alms or help from strangers, they push a cart in any supermarket where they take all their assets, they are usually accompanied by a pet that keeps them company, which it can be a dog or a cat, and when they need assistance, they usually go to the City Hall building or the Veterans Hospital and are received with dignity!.

…obrigado “Roger” por trazer este “assunto à baila”, e nós vamos escrevendo tudo isto com a intenção de que a nossa dor sirva de exemplo, sobretudo para os jovens, para que nunca se envolvam em nenhum conflito armado e compreendam, sem nunca tentar começar ou viver uma qualquer guerra, por mais pequena que seja…, aliás, não existem guerras pequenas, todas são horriveis e mortíferas!.

…hoje, quarta-feira dia 30 de Agosto de 2023, quando acordámos pela madrugada, as notícias eram um pouco assustadoras com a vinda do “Furacão Idalia”!. Sorrateiramente fomos lá fora ver e…, havia uma leve e fresca ventania vinda do oeste que até era agradável dada a alta temperatura que nesta época se faz sentir, e claro…, com os muitos anos vividos em situações parecidas, logo ficámos com a sensação que desta vez, com alguma sorte iríamos ficar a “leste do perigo”!.

…today, Wednesday, August 30, 2023, when we woke up at dawn, the news was a little scary with the coming of “Hurricane Idalia”!. We sneakily went outside to see and…, there was a light and fresh wind coming from the west that was even pleasant given the high temperature that is felt at this time, and of course…, with the many years lived in similar situations, we soon got the feeling which this time, with any luck we would stay “east of danger”!.

…regressando a casa, depois de tomar uma chávena de chá bem quente, sentámo-nos em frente à Televisão e…, a “5 o’clock news”, mostrava-nos imagens do furacão na costa oeste, dando-lhe a categoria 3, lá no Golfo do México, com ventos sustentados de 125 milhas por hora, dizendo  que provavelmente aumentariam antes de atingir a costa da Flórida nesta quarta-feira!.

…returning home, after having a cup of hot tea, we sat in front of the television and…, “5 o’clock news”, showed us images of the hurricane on the west coast, giving it category 3, there in the Gulf of Mexico, with sustained winds of 125 miles per hour, saying they would probably increase before reaching the Florida coast this Wednesday!.

…sabíamos que este ano, El Niño, apresenta um novo padrão que nos chegou por aqui em Junho, mostrando-nos um fenómeno climático intermitente que pode ter efeitos abrangentes sobre o clima em todo o mundo aumentando a quantidade e direcção do vento ou a sua mudança, tanto no oceano como na superfície terrestre!.

…we knew that this year, El Niño, presents a new pattern that reached us here in June, showing us an intermittent weather phenomenon that can have far-reaching effects on the climate worldwide by increasing the amount and direction of the wind or its change, both in the ocean and on the land surface!. 

…como tal e prevenindo uma possível catástrofe, o Governador Ron DeSantis disse que, 5.000 membros da Guarda Nacional foram activados, 580 equipes de busca e resgate foram mobilizadas, 1.100 geradores foram preparados para implantação e 200 ambulâncias estavam prontas para entrar na área!. Algumas pontes serão fechadas e 50 distritos escolares de condados também fecharam, tal como dezenas de sistemas de faculdades e universidades em toda a Flórida!. O Governador Ron DeSantis também emitiu uma declaração de emergência para 49 dos 67 condados da Florida!.

…porque na verdade, dos 10 furacões com ventos de 240 km/h ou mais que atingiram o continente dos EUA ao longo de 104 anos, todos, exceto um, testemunharam a explosão de força e poder conhecida como uma intensificação muito rápida, como por exemplo o “Furacão Ian”, que teve duas rajadas de vento em Setembro passado, que atingiram os 155 mph, antes de atingir a costa sudoeste da Flórida…, assim devemos acautelar e prevenir!.

…também nos avisam para potenciais inundações com chuvas de 3 a 6 polegadas e ventos verdadeiramente destrutivos podem ocorrer,  que provavelmente terão entre 30 e 50 milhas de largura quando chegarem a terra firme, e por aqui, na área onde presentemente vivemos, provavelmente ocorrerão ao meio-dia desta quarta-feira e serão principalmente de sul para norte, virando para o mar pela noite, mantendo inundações costeiras, com rajadas de vento na faixa de 50-60 mph!.

…resumindo, às vezes é melhor reagir exageradamente do que reagir de forma insuficiente, porque o “Furacão Idalia” é agora um forte e perigoso furacão de categoria 3, com ventos monstruosos que podem atingir os 190 km/h enquanto transforma as ruas em rios e corta a energia ao longo da costa da Flórida, e claro, existe um grande potencial de morte e devastação catastrófica!. Como tal, já houve em pelo menos 28 condados evacuações e, em alguns emitiram ordens de evacuação obrigatórias!.

…e a terminar, parece que pela madrugada a sensação de que desta vez…, com alguma sorte iríamos ficar a “leste do perigo” foi certa, porquea Flórida não será o único estado a sentir os impactos do “Furacão Idalia”!. Depois que a tempestade atingir o continente, ventos prejudiciais e chuvas fortes vão espalhar-se pelo interior da Flórida, partes da Geórgia e até mesmo das Carolinas!.

…nenhuma guerra, mesmo patriótica, defende os interesses da população justificando o sacrifício das vidas humanas que depois…, sempre tiveram alguma dificuldade em se afirmar nos círculos políticos ou culturais, porque entretanto o regime mudou com o fim dessa mesma guerra e logo vão esquecer o sofrimento dos soldados que combateram, porque sempre, não importa como, questionam os sentimentos patrióticos desses mártires soldados!.

…muitas nações, tentaram diminuir o registo de emoções confusas que marcaram a experiência dos seus soldados em combate, que sobretudo contêem muitos legados de trauma e dor, talvez justificando assim um pouco as suas más decisões políticas, tentando recuperar para a sociedade os seus veteranos de guerra!.

…e, algumas nações ainda vão homenagiando, pelo menos periódicamente, os seus serviços heróicos, embora na nossa opinião, as homenagens são ao mesmo tempo memorializações que enfatizam a honra e o patriotismo, obscurecendo o registo completo dos nossos sentimentos e experiências de combatente, e na verdade, colocam uma certa distância entre a semelhança da experência humana, que essa sim, transcende toda e qualquer fronteira entre um discurso público de ocasião para agradar e…, a realidade vivida num campo de batalha!.

…quem neste mundo, pode esquecer situações num cenário de combate, onde a lama dos rios e pântanos lá na Guiné eram constantes, onde as condições para se tentar recuperar um qualquer morto ou ferido, pois as vítimas, deviam ser puxados para algum tipo de posição onde houvesse alguma segurança, para serem tratados e…, levar um homem ferido ou morto, requer até quatro homens como portadores, o que também enfraquecia uma unidade militar num momento crítico, portanto esses infelizes militares, quando eram atingidos, alguns deles, por lá ficaram para sempre!.

…who in this world can forget situations in a combat scenario, where the mud of the rivers and swamps in Guinea were constant, where the conditions to try to recover any dead or wounded person, because the victims, had to be pulled into some kind of position where there was some security, to be treated and…, to carry a wounded or dead man, requires up to four men as carriers, which also weakened a military unit at a critical moment, so these unfortunate soldiers, when they were hit, some of them, by there they stayed forever!.

…porque muitas vezes, as tropas Portuguesas encontravam-se na pior posição para avançar e identificar com precisão a sua localização no terreno, onde ou existia selva cerrada, pântanos ou canais, com água, lama e tarrafo, algumas vezes até animais perigosos, como por exemplo gibóias ou crocodilos, onde em algumas situações o inimigo, tirando alguma vantagem, surgia de todos os lados, atacando, disparando, sem dar qualquer oportunidade para que se recuperasse os nossos mortos ou feridos!.

…já lá vão mais de 50 anos que vivemos o horrível cenário da maldita guerra colonial Portuguesa em África e, nesta idade já avançada, não só históricamente como com a experiência de todos estes anos vividos, o reviver, ou seja, lembrar a angústia e o mêdo de um horrivel cenário de guerra de guerrilha, onde a contagem dos mortos e dos feridos de ambos os lados, tal como os sobreviventes que ficaram com doenças e traumas, não só fisica como também moralmente, agora, toda e qualquer homenagem ou reconhecimento do esforço dispendido obrigatório em servir a bandeira da sua Pátria, não vai servir de nenhuma plataforma que permita melhorar a vida ou a saúde de um qualquer combatente!

…it’s been more than 50 years since we lived the horrible scenario of the cursed Portuguese colonial war in Africa and, at this already advanced age, not only historically but with the experience of all these years lived, reliving, that is, remembering the anguish and the fear of a horrible scenario of guerrilla war, where the count of the dead and wounded on both sides, as well as the survivors who were left with illnesses and traumas, not only physically but also morally, now, any tribute or recognition of the obligatory effort expended in serving the flag of your homeland, it will not serve as any platform to improve the life or health of any combatant!

…embora hoje sejamos um veterano de uma idade avançada, o pensamento, esse maldito pensamento, caça-nos na vida!. Sim, ele, o pensamento anda sempre lá, por vezes ameaçando a nossa consciência, a memória ainda existe hoje, enterrada lá no fundo, é parte antiga do também já um pouco selvagem, mas que ainda vamos dominando, que é presentemente o nosso cérebro!.

…although today we are a veteran of an advanced age, the thought, that damn thought, hunts us in life!. Andamos por aí e de vez em quando deparamos com partes da “História da Florida” e…, hoje vamos contar mais um episódio do passado, numa linguagem simples e crua, sem preconceitos, tornando-a ainda mais fácil de compreender!. Cá vai!.

…out of the job market and at this somewhat advanced age, one of our favorite pastimes is…, walking!. We walk around and from time to time we come across parts of the “History of Florida” and…, today we are going to tell another episode of the past, in simple and raw language, without prejudice, making it even easier to understand!. Here you go!.

…a herança marítima da costa histórica da Flórida remonta a mais ou menos 6.000 anos!. As primeiras casas em Santo Agostinho ficavam numa aldeia timucuana chamada Seloy e…, já no século 16, os exploradores europeus trouxeram para esse povo pacífico um conflito cultural travado pela liberdade religiosa e pelo controle de lucrativas rotas marítimas!. 

…the maritime heritage of Florida’s historic coast goes back more or less 6,000 years!. The first houses in Santo Agostinho were in a Timucuan village called Seloy and…, already in the 16th century, European explorers brought to this peaceful people a cultural conflict waged by religious freedom and the control of lucrative sea routes!.

…e, sabendo que a corrente do Golfo atravessava o Estreito da Flórida e continuava subindo pela costa leste, virando para oeste próximo à costa de Santo Agostinho, e claro, aproveitando-se dessas rotas de navegação, navegavam com as suas frotas em direção aos portos europeus, levando das suas colónias na América do Sul, do Norte e Central suprimentos navais, ouro e prata, outros produtos ou géneros alimentícios para casa!.

…and, knowing that the Gulf Stream crossed the Strait of Florida and continued up the east coast, turning westwards near the coast of St. Augustine, and of course, taking advantage of these shipping lanes, they sailed with their fleets towards the European ports, taking from its colonies in South, North and Central America naval supplies, gold and silver, other products or foodstuffs for home!.

…por cá ficou a tal “História da Florida”, e nós caminhando…, tropeçámos num lugar aqui próximo de onde presentemente vivemos a que chamam de “Sítio Arqueológico da Plantação Mala Compra”, que é um sítio arqueológico em Palm Coast, Flórida, na margem leste do rio Matanzas e está localizado a oeste da interseção do State Road A1A e Mala Compra Drive, no condado de Flagler e, em Março de 2004, foi adicionado ao Registro Nacional de Lugares Históricos dos USA!.

…there was the so-called “Florida History”, and we were walking…, we stumbled upon a place close to where we currently live, which they call “Mala Compra Plantation Archaeological Site”, which is an archaeological site in Palm Coast, Florida, on the east bank of the Matanzas River and is located west of the intersection of State Road A1A and Mala Compra Drive, in Flagler County and, in March 2004, was added to the USA National Register of Historic Places!.

…por simples curiosidade fomos à internet procurar mais informação e…, verificámos que Mala Compra em espanhol quer dizer “mau negócio” ou “má compra” e fazia parte de um dos maiores sistemas de plantação no nordeste da Flórida, totalizando 2.265 acres, situado na sua costa, pertencendo a Joseph Marion Hernández e funcionou principalmente como uma plantação de algodão baseada em escravos, desde 1816 a 1836, quando os Seminoles a queimaram perto do início do Segunda Guerra Seminole!.

…out of simple curiosity we went online to look for more information and… we found that Mala Compra in Spanish means “bad business” or “bad purchase” and was part of one of the largest plantation systems in northeast Florida, totaling 2,265 acres, located on its coast, belonging to Joseph Marion Hernández and operated mainly as a slave-based cotton plantation, from 1816 to 1836, when the Seminoles burned it near the beginning of the Second Seminole War!.

…andámos por lá e vimos as ruinas, onde investigações arqueológicas preliminares foram realizadas e um estudo identificou a casa onde Hernández e sua família residiam quando não estavam em Santo Augustinho, pois a sua residência de campo era a casa da plantação em Mala Compra, uma estrutura construída sobre uma fundação de blocos de coquina colocada a três pés de profundidade, com o lado voltado para o rio e tinha um alpendre comprido e largo!. 

…we walked around and saw the ruins, where preliminary archaeological investigations were carried out and a study identified the house where Hernández and his family resided when they were not in St. Augustine, as their country residence was the plantation house in Mala Compra, a structure built on a foundation of coquina blocks placed three feet deep, with the side facing the river and had a long and wide porch!.

…no seu interior a casa tinha duas lareiras construídas em tijolo e coquina, paredes rebocadas e portas apaineladas e a cozinha independente!. Tinha também um primeiro andar com terraço e um sótão usado para curar tabaco!. Nas escavações, mais de 14.000 artefatos foram recuperados pelos arqueólogos e seus assistentes, incluindo fragmentos de cerâmica e garrafas de vinho, utensílios de cozinha, cachimbos de caulim, dobradiças, pregos e peças de armas!.

…inside the house had two fireplaces built in brick and coquina, plastered walls and paneled doors and an independent kitchen!. It also had a first floor with a terrace and an attic used to cure tobacco!. In the excavations, more than 14,000 artifacts were recovered by archaeologists and their assistants, including fragments of pottery and wine bottles, kitchen utensils, kaolin pipes, hinges, nails and weapon parts!.

…voltando ao passado, este local para a plantação foi comprado por Hernández no ano de 1816, onde algodão e milho foram cultivados até que o assentamento foi destruído como acima já mencionámos, por saqueadores nativos americanos!. A residência principal foi descrita em relatos históricos como uma estrutura emoldurada de 1 1/2 andares com fundação de alvenaria!. As investigações revelaram que o edifício tinha uma fundação de blocos de coquina na parte leste, enquanto rodapés de alvenaria sustentavam a secção oeste!.

…going back to the past, this plantation site was purchased by Hernández in the year 1816, where cotton and corn were grown until the settlement was destroyed, as mentioned above, by marauding Native Americans!. The main residence has been described in historical accounts as a 1 1/2-story framed structure with a masonry foundation!. Investigations revealed that the building had a foundation of coquina blocks on the east side, while masonry baseboards supported the west section!.

…num relato do estado da plantação no ano de 1836 fornecido por Joseph S. Sanchez ao Tribunal do Condado de St. Johns em 1837, diz que as suas tropas de milícia encontraram vários bois, gado e cavalos, cercas de jardim e currais de gado e um extenso e próspero laranjal, que diziam conter 1.500 árvores e uma variedade de outras árvores frutíferas!.

…an account of the state of the plantation in 1836 given by Joseph S. Sanchez to the St. Johns County Courthouse in 1837 says that his militia troops found several oxen, cattle and horses, garden fences and cattle pens (and an extensive and prosperous orange grove, said to contain 1,500 trees and a variety of other fruit trees!.

…continuando com a história deste lugar, dizem-nos que no ano de 1816, o governo espanhol concedeu a Hernández uma grande extensão de terra na confluência do pântano de Graham e o que era então a cabeceira do extremo sul do rio Matanzas, na sua margem ocidental!. Lá cultivou-se cerca de 700 hectares de cana-de-açúcar, chamando o local de plantação de São José!. 

…continuing with the history of this place, we are told that in the year 1816, the Spanish government granted Hernández a large tract of land at the confluence of the Graham Swamp and what was then the headwaters of the southern end of the Matanzas River, in its west bank!. There, about 700 hectares of sugar cane were cultivated, calling the place of planting São José!.

…ainda de acordo com o este relato, dizem-nos que foi daqui que Hernandez escreveu uma carta ao Dr. William H. Simmons, sobre o cultivo do tabaco cubano e numa escritura, por 1.500 pesos em dinheiro, o padre Miguel Crosby vendeu a Hernández 800 acres na ilha barreira costeira, descrita como “800 acres com seus pântanos adjacentes no rio Matanzas, limitado ao norte pelas terras de John Bautista Ferreira”!.

…still according to this report, we are told that it was from here that Hernandez wrote a letter to Dr. William H. Simmons, about the cultivation of Cuban tobacco and in a deed, for 1,500 pesos in cash, Father Miguel Crosby sold the Hernández 800 acres on coastal barrier island, described as “800 acres with its adjacent marshes on the Matanzas River, bordered on the north by the lands of John Bautista Ferreira”!.

…nós, estamos em crer que este Ferreira, que era um capitão do mar que traficava africanos escravizados na Flórida, devia ser de descendência Portuguesa, pois dizem-nos que a grafia deste nome variava muitas vezes no documento, onde também mencionava que Hernández comprou do filho de Ferreira, Francis Ferreira outra propriedade de 375 acres ao lado de Mala Compra chamada Bella Vista!.

…we believe that this Ferreira, who was a sea captain who trafficked enslaved Africans in Florida, must have been of Portuguese descent, as we are told that the spelling of this name varied many times in the document, where it also mentioned that Hernández bought from Ferreira’s son, Francis Ferreira, another 375-acre property next to Mala Compra called Bella Vista!.

…nesta propriedade também havia um armazém em madeira para algodão e sementes, tal como para fardos de algodão descaroçado ou equipamentos agrícolas!. Cá fora, nos quais os cavalos percorriam um caminho em circunferência!. Também havia outros edifícios, incluindo um celeiro de milho, um banheiro, bem como cabanas para pessoas escravizadas como trabalhadores forçados!.

…on this property there was also a wooden warehouse for cotton and seeds, as well as for bales of ginned cotton or agricultural equipment!. Outside, on which the horses walked a path in circumference!. There were also other buildings, including a corn barn, a bathroom, as well as huts for people enslaved as forced laborers!.

…Hernández devia de ser uma pessoa importante, pois foi o primeiro delegado da Flórida ao Congresso dos Estados Unidos em 1822 e 1823 e o primeiro hispânico a servir no Congresso dos Estados Unidos!. Era um general de brigada comandando as tropas da Milícia da Flórida durante a Segunda Guerra Seminole, que enquanto negociava com o líder Seminole Osceola sob uma bandeira branca de trégua em outubro de 1837, o levou cativo por ordem do General Jesup!.

…Hernández must have been an important person, as he was the first delegate from Florida to the United States Congress in 1822 and 1823 and the first Hispanic to serve in the United States Congress!. He was a brigadier general commanding the troops of the Florida Militia during the Second Seminole War, who while negotiating with the Seminole leader Osceola under a white flag of truce in October 1837, took him captive by order of General Jesup!.

…e para terminar este relato que já vai longo, nos estágios iniciais da Segunda Guerra Seminole, durante o inverno de 1835 e 1836, e na primavera do último ano, as plantações de Mala Compra foram ocupadas e fortificadas como postos militares!. Durante aquele inverno e primavera, foram ocupadas, evacuadas e reocupadas por vários destacamentos e corpos de tropas que apreenderam e comeram grandes quantidades de milho, feno, cana-de-açúcar e gado armazenados na fazenda!.

…and to finish this long story, in the early stages of the Second Seminole War, during the winter of 1835 and 1836, and in the spring of the last year, the plantations of Mala Compra were occupied and fortified as military posts!. During that winter and spring, they were occupied, evacuated and reoccupied by several detachments and troops that seized and ate large amounts of corn, hay, sugar cane and cattle stored on the farm!.

…e, na primavera, como já explicámos acima por algumas vezes, os Seminoles, aproveitando uma evacuação temporária, queimaram todas as construções de qualquer importância ou valor na plantação Mala Compra, incluindo o armazém de algodão que havia sido preparado e utilizado como fortificação defensiva, capturando três das 80 pessoas escravizadas na plantação e expulsaram as restantes!.

…and, in the spring, as we have already explained a few times above, the Seminoles, taking advantage of a temporary evacuation, burned all buildings of any importance or value on the Mala Compra plantation, including the cotton warehouse that had been prepared and used as a defensive fortification, capturing three of the 80 people enslaved on the plantation and expelled the rest!.

…foi uma mera escolha de incluir o mundo na nossa história de vida!. Porquê?. Porque muitas vezes nos dizem que temos “uma qualidade de mente ou espírito que nos permite enfrentar dificuldades, perigos, dores, etc., sem muito medo“!. O que na realidade não é verdade e…, não é lá muito facil compartilhar as nossas experiências de vida e os seus detalhes intrincados numa plataforma pública!. Quando pensamos nisso, um raro sorriso surge nos nossos lábios!. Não porque nos sentimos orgulhosos de ser considerados um pouco “malucos”, mas porque começámos este blog com plena consciência desse facto!.

…was a mere choice to include the world in our life story!. Why?. Because we are often told that we have “a quality of mind or spirit that allows us to face difficulties, dangers, pain, etc., without much fear“!. Which is actually not true and…, it’s not very easy to share our life experiences and their intricate details on a public platform!. When we think about it, a rare smile appears on our lips!. Not because we are proud of being considered a little “crazy”, but because we started this blog with full awareness of that fact!.

…é quase uma missão não esconder e compartilhar com o mundo as sombras claras ou escuras, da nossa personalidade!. No entanto, é costume falar sobre as nossas vulnerabilidades, os problemas da vida, os problemas de saúde e da família, e também algumas viagens, que afinal são “coisas” quase comuns a todos!. 

…it is almost a mission not to hide and share with the world the light or dark shadows of our personality!. However, it is customary to talk about our vulnerabilities, life problems, health and family problems, and also some trips, which after all are “things” almost common to everyone!.

…mas na verdade, é bastante mais conveniente apresentar apenas os aspectos bons, fortes e positivos da vida, como é comum aparecer nas redes sociais!. No entanto, não conseguimos esconder as frustrações sem enxugar umas lágrimas e…, tal qual outra pessoa de bem, retratamos a dor, a alegria, a mágoa, a amargura, o desespero, a raiva, a inocência, tudo na sua forma verdadeira e não parecendo ser uma pessoa forte, com emoções retocadas!.

…but in fact, it is much more convenient to present only the good, strong and positive aspects of life, as it is common to appear on social networks!. However, we were unable to hide our frustrations without wiping away a few tears and…, just like any other good person, we portray pain, joy, hurt, bitterness, despair, anger, innocence, all in their true and not seeming to be a strong person, with retouched emotions!.

…é verdade que este blog tem uma missão, tem um significado muito mais profundo na nossa vida do que apenas contar ao mundo o que passámos nestes últimos 80 anos, quem somos, do que somos feitos e o que a vida nos fez decidir fazer em quase todas as circunstâncias!.

…it is true that this blog has a mission, it has a much deeper meaning in our life than just telling the world what we have been through these last 80 years, who we are, what we are made of and what life made us decide to do in almost all circumstances!.

…quando jovens, nascendo num país então colonial, fomos obrigados a ir combater envolvendo-nos na mortífera Guerra Colonial Portuguesa em África, onde “nadámos em águas agitadas”, que nos deixou cicatrizes profundas e dolorosas!. Como tal, ainda hoje registamos muitos pensamentos negativos, numa longa jornada de vida onde quase todas as emoções continuam intactas!. E claro, numa tentativa de melhorar a nossa autoconsciência, permitiu-nos ver a vida com mais clareza, sem desafiar a frustração, a humilhação e a raiva que antes fizeram parte da nossa vivência naquela maldita guerra em África!.

…when young, being born in a then colonial country, we were forced to go and fight, getting involved in the deadly Portuguese Colonial War in Africa, where we “swam in rough waters”, which left us deep and painful scars!. As such, even today we register many negative thoughts, in a long journey of life where almost all emotions remain intact!. And of course, in an attempt to improve our self-awareness, it allowed us to see life more clearly, without challenging the frustration, humiliation and anger that were once part of our experience in that damn war in Africa!.

…assim desejamos sinceramente que ao compartilhar parte da nossa história de vida, contada numa visão clara e crua numa plataforma global, talvez alguém, em algum lugar, algum dia, busque inspiração e…, seja ajudado com as nossas histórias de vida!. Porque este blog é um passo em frente na nossa  missão em compartilhar a nossa história com o mundo na esperança de poder salvar alguém de sofrer os traumas estranhos e emocionais que sofremos em alguns momentos da nossa já um pouco longa vida!.

…so ​​we sincerely hope that by sharing part of our life story, told in a clear and raw vision on a global platform, maybe someone, somewhere, someday, will seek inspiration and…, be helped with our life stories!. Because this blog is a step forward in our mission to share our story with the world in the hope of saving someone from suffering the strange and emotional traumas that we suffer at times in our already somewhat long lives!.

…porque escrever regularmente também nos ajudou a registrar tantas e tantas memórias de fracassos ou alguns sucessos, em palavras que podemos convenientemente revisitar, reviver e reavaliar quando quisermos e…, escrever honestamente sobre a nossa vida, também nos ajudou a manter a criatividade, fluindo enquanto nos mantemos atentos aos mínimos detalhes, porque infelizmente o mundo está cheio de pessoas que se orgulham de nos fazer sentir um pouco estúpidos, principalmente se ousarmos mostrar uma emoção diferente!.

…because writing regularly has also helped us to record so many, many memories of failures or a few successes, in words that we can conveniently revisit, relive and re-evaluate whenever we want and…, writing honestly about our lives, has also helped us to keep the creativity flowing while we remain attentive to the smallest details, because unfortunately the world is full of people who pride themselves on making us feel a little stupid, especially if we dare to show a different emotion!.
