…“Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race”, 2025, Alaska!.

…embora vivendo no estado da Flórida, já algumas vezes aqui  mencionámos as nossas aventuras rumo ao norte, onde tudo se torna mais simples viajando em direcção ao oeste, um pouco antes de começar uma curva para norte, depois outra vez para oeste, mas sempre no sentido norte, atravessando parte do território do Canadá, incluindo o lendário e histórico “Alaska Highway”, que serpenteia pelas montanhas, planícies desertas, lagos e rios, das províncias de British Columbia e do Yukon até ao estado do Alaska, onde no período de alguns anos, viajando sempre por terra, por vezes atravessando rios em jangadas, já completámos três “expedições” a este estado!.

…e lá no Alaska, já estivemos em alguns lugares estratégicos junto do seu percurso, embora sendo época de verão, portanto com pouca neve, caminhando por pequenos troços que fazem parte do que foi a história de pioneiros, que no século XIX, atravessaram não só planícies na procura da sua terra prometida, como também a “tundra” (região ártica, plana e sem árvores com o subsolo permanentemente congelado), próximo do Mar de Bearing, à luz do “sol da meia-noite”!.

…este ano, realizou-se a 53ª corrida, a que também chamam da “última grande corrida no Earth” que à partida incluiu 29 americanos (19 Alaskans, 3 Mushers de Michigan, 1 do Alabama, Idaho, Michigan, Montana, New Hampshire e Wisconsin) e 4 Mushers internacionais (2 canadenses, 1 Dane e 1 Norwegian), e o campo de 33 Mushers era composto por 11 mulheres e 22 homens, 16 dos quais eram novatos, 17 eram veteranos e 2 foram campeões anteriores, tal como centenas de cães, todos com “toneladas de determinação”!.

…este ano a corrida seguiu uma nova rota, que começou no “Waterfront Lodge de Pike”, na cidade de Fairbanks, embora o seu início cerimonial tivesse ocorrido no sábado, 1º de março, às 10h, no centro de Anchorage, seguido pelo reinício oficial lá no norte, na cidade de Fairbanks, na segunda-feira, dia 3 de março, às 11h., e as equipas correram através de nevascas, causando condições severas com temperaturas abaixo de zero e ventos da força de vendaval, terminando sòmente quando o último “musher e a sua equipa de cães”, atravessar o “Burled Arch” do Iditarod na distante cidade de Nome!.

Neste momento ela está a 22 milhas de Ruby. Jessie Holmes vem a 11 milhas atrás na 2ª. Posição, algumas equipas estão descansando os cães na trilha, na milha 266. O clima, agora é de 34 graus e esta noite vai estar nublado com chuviscos de neve a baixo de 23 graus, com ventos de 20 MPH e a chance de neve é de 40%”.

…depois ainda vêm outros relatos tais como:Jessie Holmes deixou Galena e está descansando na milha 391 em 1º lugar. Ele fica a 20 milhas do ponto de verificação de Nulato e 51 milhas até o ponto de verificação de Kaltag depois de Nulato. 5 equipes descansam no ponto de verificação de Galena, duas equipes descansam em Ruby e o resto das equipes de corrida chegam a Ruby. Eles nåo param, estão correndo e descansando ao longo da trilha!.

…outro relato a poucos dias do  final: Jessie Holmes pode deixar a aldeia de Kaltag às 5h28 e vai sair com 12 cães que ele próprio alimentou. Paige Drobny acaba de chegar ao ponto de verificação de Kaltag e parece que vai ficar por um tempo. Ela está em 2º lugar e chegou com 12 cães de arnês e 1 carregado e está prestes a alimentar os seus cães e deitá-los.

…a cidade de Chetwynd, BC, Canada, depois das montanhas!. (…the town of Chetwynd, BC, Canada, beyond the mountains)!.

…o nosso destino era o norte!. Como tal, entrámos na estrada #97, que é não só a rota mais longa continuamente na província da Columbia Britânica como a maior estrada provincial em qualquer outra província e…, fomos apreciando a parte oriental das Montanhas Rochosas, parando em Chetwynd que é um município distrital localizado no sopé das já ditas montanhas!.

…our destination was the north!. As such, we entered Highway #97, which is not only the longest continuously route in the province of British Columbia but also the longest provincial road in any other province and…, we enjoyed the eastern part of the Rocky Mountains, stopping at Chetwynd which is a district municipality located at the foot of the aforementioned mountains!.

…foi por duas razões, a primeira era apreciar as dezenas de esculturas, autênticas obras de arte em madeira, executadas por motoserra que se espalhavam ao longo da estrada #97, exibidas como arte pública, fazendo parte de uma arte pouco vulgar e que requere o auxilio de diversos artistas conceituados que vêm de diversas partes do mundo para aqui se reunirem, para trabalhar algumas destas já mencionadas autênticas obras de arte com madeira de uma extensa floresta comunitária que faz parte deste município, porque Chetwynd é a sede do “Campeonato Internacional de Escultura com Motosserra” e aqui se realiza todo o mês de Junho!. 

…it was for two reasons, the first was to appreciate the dozens of sculptures, authentic works of art in wood, made with a chainsaw that were spread out along road #97, displayed as public art, forming part of an unusual art that requires the help of several renowned artists who come from different parts of the world to gather here, to work on some of these already mentioned authentic works of art with wood from an extensive community forest that is part of this municipality, because Chetwynd is the headquarters of the “International Chainsaw Sculpture Championship” and takes place here throughout the month of June!. 

…e a segunda razão era, a mudança de óleo na nossa “White Fox”, (caravana), que se queixava que já tinha as milhas suficientes e, necessitava de novo óleo!. E claro, todo o tempo de espera deu para nos informar que Chetwynd tem uma história enraizada na mineração de carvão, a silvicultura, o processamento de gás natural, a pecuária, tal como a agricultura e a energia eólica, que afinal são as suas principais indústrias!.

…and the second reason was, the oil change in our “White Fox”, (caravan), which complained that it already had enough miles and needed new oil!. And of course, all the waiting time was enough to inform us that Chetwynd has a history rooted in coal mining, forestry, natural gas processing, livestock farming, as well as agriculture and wind energy, which after all are its main industries!

…e a curiosidade porque descrevemos tudo isto, é que esta pequenina e acolhedora cidade, é a primeira que encontramos quando viajamos em direção ao leste depois de emergir das Montanhas Rochosas, situada numa antiga planície de inundação, e que tem uma história parecida como tantas que se foram formando com a chegada de colonos aventureiros na década de 1920, iniciando-se com um entreposto comercial numa pastagem conhecida como Little Prairie, quando esses colonos começaram a migrar para o oeste através dos rios congelados, para as terras atribuídas sob a “Lei de Terras de Domínio” que podiam ser apropriadas assim que fossem ocupadas e usadas!. 

…and the curiosity why we describe all this is that this small and welcoming city is the first one we encounter when we travel towards the east after emerging from the Rocky Mountains, located in an ancient flood plain, and which has a similar history like so many that were formed with the arrival of adventurous settlers in the 1920s, starting with a trading post on a grassland known as Little Prairie, when these settlers began to migrate west across frozen rivers, to the lands assigned under the “Dominion Land Law” that could be appropriated as soon as they were occupied and used!.   

…claro, depois foram limpando as terras para obter feno ou aveia, não faltava madeira para construir habitações, tavernas, postos de trocas e comércio, escolas ou igrejas, talvez acidentalmente, descobriram petróleo ou carvão, foram-se construindo estradas, chegou o caminho de ferro, e de pequenos povoados…, hoje são cidades acolhedoras tal como Chetwynd!.

…Expedição ao Alaska24 (Dia 25) …Alaskan Expedition24 (Day 25)

…pernoitámos aqui, no meio desta área do quase selvagem “Parque Estadual Dead Horse Point”, onde as preocupações de segurança incluem o isolamento relativo do parque!. Por exemplo: gás, alimentos e assistência médica está a mais de 30 milhas de distância, lá em baixo na cidade de Moab, sem mencionar o perigo de raios, chuva, ventos fortes ou as falésias não vedadas!.

…we stayed the night here, in the middle of this almost wild area “Dead Horse Point State Park”, where safety concerns include the relative isolation of the park!. For example: gas, food and medical care is over 30 miles away, down in the town of Moab, not to mention the danger from lightning, rain, high winds or the unsealed cliffs!

…mas todas estas pequenas grandes coisas…, fazem parte da nossa aventura e, se nos sentarmos em uma qualquer rocha, daquelas que por aqui existem, podemos ver o cenário de uma península de rochas no alto de falésias de arenito, conectadas ao planalto por uma estreita faixa de terra a que chamam garganta ou pescoço…, se assim o entenderem!. 

…but all these little big things… are part of our adventure and, if we sit on any rock, one of those that exist around here, we can see the scenery of a peninsula of rocks on top of sandstone cliffs, connected to the plateau by a narrow strip of land that they call a throat or neck…, if you will!. 

…wow, que maravilha!. Era manhã, e o sol aparecia de um lado diferente do de ontem que era da parte da tarde quando aqui chegámos!. Como tal, e devido à visão geral e dramática deste maravilhoso parque, torna-se um local muito popular para tirar fotografias!. 

…wow, how wonderful! It was morning, and the sun appeared from a different side than yesterday, which was in the afternoon when we arrived here! As such, and due to the overall and dramatic view of this wonderful park, it becomes a very popular place to take photographs!. 

…é um cenário que espera para ser descoberto, como por exemplo no local  “Big Chief Overlook”, que está localizado num topo muito inclinado do parque, mas é um local óptimo, de onde se obtém incríveis vistas panorâmicas dos dois lados do parque!. Não nos surpreende que esta área foi usada na cena do Grand Canyon no final do filme de 1991, Thelma & Louise!.

…it’s a scenery waiting to be discovered, for example at the “Big Chief Overlook” site, which is located on a very steep top of the park, but it’s a great spot, from where you can get incredible panoramic views of both sides of the park!. It comes as no surprise that this area was used in the Grand Canyon scene at the end of the 1991 film Thelma & Louise!.

…era meia manhã quando começámos a descer a montanha em direção à cidade de Moab, para nos abastecer de gasolina e alguns alimentos e…, sempre que viajamos pelo oeste, é quase obrigatório usarmos a estrada  #128, que é uma estrada estadual de aproximadamente 45 milhas, onde toda a extensão da estrada foi designada como Scenic Byway no Alto Colorado River, como parte do programa Utah Scenic Byways!. Esta estrada também faz parte da Estrada Pré-Histórica de Diamantes de Dinossauros, como uma Via Nacional Panorâmica!. 

…it was mid-morning when we started to descend the mountain towards the city of Moab, to stock up on gasoline and some food and…, whenever we travel through the west, it is almost obligatory to use road #128, which is a state road approximately 45 miles where the entire length of the road has been designated as an Upper Colorado River Scenic Byway as part of the Utah Scenic Byways! program. This road is also part of the Prehistoric Dinosaur Diamond Road, as a National Scenic Byway!. 

…hoje é quase usada como um passeio panorâmico e os residentes da região de Moab frequentemente se referem a esta estrada como “a estrada do rio”,  porque o rio Colorado, segue a seu lado em quase toda a sua extensão, que começa ao norte de Moab, através de um desfiladeiro estreito e íngreme, descrito como espetacular pela National Geographic, cujas paredes de arenito são recomendadas pela sua beleza em guias de viagens!.

…today it is used almost as a scenic drive and residents of the Moab region often refer to this road as “the river road” because the Colorado River runs alongside it for almost its entire length, which begins north of Moab, through a narrow and steep gorge, described as spectacular by National Geographic, whose sandstone walls are recommended for their beauty in travel guides!.

…aqui nesta área, começa o cenário das principais drenagens das Montanhas La Sal, já por diversas vezes referidas anteriormente, ampliando o lado leste do desfiladeiro do rio Colorado, num amplo vale de paredes de penhasco, chamado de “Richardson Anfiteatro”, que contém vários locais onde filmes e muitos comerciais já foram filmados!.

…here in this area, the scenario of the main drainages of the La Sal Mountains, already mentioned several times before, begins, expanding the east side of the Colorado River gorge, in a wide valley of cliff walls, called the “Richardson Amphitheatre”, which contains several locations where films and many commercials have been filmed!.

…como por exemplo, na área do Red Cliffs Ranch, foi o local preferido para filmes como Taza – Filho de Cochise, Rio Grande, Rio Concho, Wagon Master, Batalha no Apache Pass, Cheyenne Autumn ou Ten Who Dare, assim como muitos comerciais de televisão, existindo mesmo um pequeno museu com algumas relíquias usadas, por entre outros, o actor John Wayne, quando por aqui vivia temporadas, como protagonista dos seus diversos filmes!.

…for example, in the Red Cliffs Ranch area, it was the preferred location for films such as Taza – Son of Cochise, Rio Grande, Rio Concho, Wagon Master, Battle at Apache Pass, Cheyenne Autumn or Ten Who Dare, as well as many commercials television, there is even a small museum with some relics used, among others, by the actor John Wayne, when he lived here for seasons, as the protagonist of his various films!.

…no extremo leste do vale, o rio Colorado e esta maravilhosa estrada, formam a fronteira sul do Parque Nacional dos Arcos, mas não há acesso ao parque, no entanto existem trilhas ao longo da estrada e outras atrações populares que incluem Canyons e Arcos ou uma linda vista para as Torres Fisher, que são um conjunto de pináculos vermelhos escuros, que se tornam numa atração para os amantes de fotografias, tal como nós!.

…at the eastern end of the valley, the Colorado River and this wonderful road form the southern border of Arches National Park, but there is no access to the park, however there are trails along the road and other popular attractions that include Canyons and Arches or a beautiful view of the Fisher Towers, which are a set of dark red pinnacles, which become an attraction for photography lovers, like us!.

…depois deste lindo cenário do rio Colorado e das suas margens, e querendo continuar a seguir este rio, olhámos para trás pelo retrovisor, entrando na auto-estrada I-70, viajando no sentido leste!. 

…after this beautiful scenery of the Colorado River and its banks, and wanting to continue following this river, we looked back in the rearview mirror, entering the I-70 highway, traveling east!. 

…chegámos de novo ao estado do Colorado e…, viajando por esta auto-estrada, o cenário e constante!. Tem longas retas e curvas suaves com monumentos históricos, grandes zonas rochosas, pequenas montanhas e alguns túneis!.

…we arrived again in the state of Colorado and…, traveling along this highway, the scenery is constant!. It has long straights and smooth curves with historical monuments, large rocky areas, small mountains and some tunnels!.

…até que tem mesmo que passar por entre altas montanhas onde passa, o rio Colorado, o caminho de ferro e…, esta estrada que vai ao lado do rio, começa a desviar-se por cima do rio, ao lado do caminho de ferro, ao lado, por baixo ou por cima da outra via da estrada que vem do leste, entra num túnel e sai por cima do rio e…, aqui e ali ainda tem desvios para zonas descanso, porque também existem cheias ou acidentes!. Que maravilhosa “barafunda”!.

…tudo isto é na área quando serpenteia pelo Glenwood Canyon, onde se concluiu um dos projetos rodoviários mais extraordinários já construídos nos USA, que é uma rede de viadutos, pontes e túneis de aproximadamente 12,5 milhas de comprimento construída através de um desfiladeiro extraordinariamente estreito e ambientalmente sensível no oeste do Colorado, que marcou um marco na história do transporte desta nação!. 

…all of this is in the area as it winds through Glenwood Canyon, where one of the most extraordinary highway projects ever built in the USA was completed, which is a network of viaducts, bridges and tunnels approximately 12.5 miles long built through an extraordinary canyon narrow and environmentally sensitive site in western Colorado that marked a milestone in this nation’s transportation history!. 

…fomos ver a história desta maravilhosa “barafunda” e…, para a sua realização tiveram que construir duas estradas, uma quase em cima da outra, incluindo 40 pontes e viadutos que se estendiam por mais de 6 milhas entre seções da estrada!. A estrada tem 15 milhas de muros de contenção e um túnel de 4.000 pés de comprimento com furos para o tráfego em ambos os sentidos!. Os muros de contenção são fixados com tirantes ancorados e âncoras de solo, e a rodovia é pavimentada com lajes de pavimento pós-tensionadas moldadas no local, em balanço de 6 pés para além dos muros de contenção!.

…we went to see the history of this wonderful “mess” and…, to make it happen they had to build two roads, one almost on top of the other, including 40 bridges and viaducts that stretched for more than 6 miles between sections of the road!. The road has 15 miles of retaining walls and a 4,000 foot long tunnel with holes for traffic in both directions! The retaining walls are secured with anchored ties and ground anchors, and the highway is paved with cast-in-place post-tensioned pavement slabs, cantilevered 6 feet beyond the retaining walls!.

…só mais uma pequena observação, este projeto ganhou mais de 30 prémios, incluindo o prémio Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement Award de 1993 da Sociedade Americana de Engenheiros Civis!. Achamos que foram bem entregues!.

…just one more small note, this project has won more than 30 awards, including the 1993 Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers!. We think they were delivered well!

…já vamos longe na escrita!. Resumindo um pouco, continuámos viajando no sentido leste, atravessando mais uma vez a cidade de Denver, e pernoitando num parque de RV, na pequena cidade de Limon, ainda no estado do Colorado!.

…we’re already a long way in writing! To summarize a little, we continued traveling east, crossing the city of Denver once again, and spending the night in an RV park, in the small town of Limon, still in the state of Colorado!.

…Expedição ao Alaska24 (Dia 13) …Alaskan Expedition24 (Day 13)

…o relógio da nossa “White Fox” (caravana), marcava 7 horas e 34 minutos da manhã quando abandonámos a pequena cidade de Valdez rumo ao norte!. Eventualmente, a luz do sol desapareceu e as montanhas pararam de brilhar com as suas cores brilhantes e…, para tornar a viagem com um pouco mais de aventura, aquele céu que no dia anterior estava simplesmente mágico desapareceu, e o tempo chuvoso chegou!. 

…the clock of our “White Fox” (caravan), showed 7 hours and 34 minutes in the morning when we left the small city of Valdez heading north!. Eventually, the sunlight disappeared and the mountains stopped shining with their brilliant colors and…, to make the trip a little more adventurous, that sky that was simply magical the day before disappeared, and the rainy weather arrived!. 

…no entanto, mesmo com o céu a desintegrar-se, havia que prosseguir rumo ao norte, pelo menos até à cidade de Fairbanks!. Escolhemos a rota do Oleoduto Trans-Alaska que quase nos acompanhou a cada subida, descida ou curva da estrada, revelando-nos a imensidão da paisagem,  nas encostas, os abetos escuros retorcendo-se no meio de alguns álamos verdes aqui e ali, mostrando vestígios de incêndios ou secas de verão!.

…however, even with the sky disintegrating, we had to continue heading north, at least to the city of Fairbanks!. We chose the route of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, which almost followed us at every climb, descent or bend in the road, revealing to us the immensity of the landscape, on the hillsides, the dark fir trees twisting amidst a few green aspen trees here and there, showing traces of fires or summer droughts!.

…era um pouco da “Tundra do Ártico”, no verdadeiro interior do Alaska, num local a norte deste “calhau” a que chamam planeta Terra, mas é um lugar fascinante e, antes de começar esta longa jornada, não conseguíamos evitar a sensação de que íamos deixar algo que talvez nunca mais iríamos ver, porque experimentar o ártico no seu pico de vida, compreendemos totalmente a sua beleza, mas ao mesmo tempo a sua fragilidade!.

…it was a bit of the “Arctic Tundra”, in the true interior of Alaska, in a place north of this “pebble” that they call planet Earth, but it is a fascinating place and, before starting this long journey, we couldn’t avoid the feeling that we were leaving something that we would perhaps never see again, because experiencing the Arctic at its peak of life, we fully understood its beauty, but at the same time its fragility!.

…chovia com algumas abertas!. Prosseguíamos lentamente, pois a visibilidade era deficiente e a estrada apresentava alguns buracos, até que eventualmente as árvores iam desaparecendo, deixando uma paisagem pintada por plantas, rochas e neve que se estendiam por todo o lado, onde há muitas dezenas de anos atrás, alguns pioneiros na preservação da natureza, exploraram as partes desta cordilheira montanhosa, indo a pé, de barco ou de trenó!.

…it was raining with some open!. We proceeded slowly, as visibility was poor and the road had some holes, until eventually the trees disappeared, leaving a landscape painted by plants, rocks and snow that spread everywhere, where many decades ago, some Pioneers in nature preservation, they explored parts of this mountain range, going on foot, by boat or by sled!.

…é uma estrada acidentada e os serviços são extremamente limitados, mas nós sabíamos ao viajar por aqui, que tínhamos que ser auto-suficientes e bem preparados, porque para aqueles que são atraídos por espaços vazios e exóticos tal como nós, esta rota oferece-nos uma oportunidade incomparável de descobrir um pedaço de deserto ártico e alguma vida selvagem que por aqui existe!. 

…it is a bumpy road and services are extremely limited, but we knew when traveling here that we had to be self-sufficient and well prepared, because for those who are attracted to empty and exotic spaces like us, this route offers- We have an incomparable opportunity to discover a piece of Arctic desert and some of the wildlife that exists here!. 

…íamos parando aqui e ali, passando pelo Lago Paxson, quase coberto de gelo, perto da  pequena cidade com o mesmo nome, onde nos dizem que ainda vivem cerca de uma dúzia de residentes e com algumas cabanas propriedade de pessoas de Fairbanks, que fica lá no norte, ou de outras partes do Alaska!. Entre os residentes durante todo o ano estão os condutores de cães, onde se podem ver e ouvir os canis cheios de cães de trenó, quando por lá parámos!.

…we stopped here and there, passing Lake Paxson, almost covered in ice, near the small town of the same name, where we are told that about a dozen residents still live and with a few cabins owned by people from Fairbanks, which is up north, or from other parts of Alaska! Among the year-round residents are dog drivers, where you can see and hear the kennels full of sled dogs when we stopped there!.

…todo este cenário está no coração do Alaska, onde as florestas estão repletas de vida selvagem, desde o formidável urso pardo a grandes manadas de caribu, tal como vistas espetaculares de paisagens montanhosas, um pouco encobertas pela chuva miudinha que estava caindo nesse momento!. Todo este Interior do Alaska, foi o lar original dos povos atabascanos, mineiros de ouro, agricultores e caçadores de peles que descobriram as riquezas desta região!.

…this entire scenario is in the heart of Alaska, where the forests are full of wildlife, from the formidable grizzly bear to large herds of caribou, as well as spectacular views of mountainous landscapes, somewhat obscured by the light rain that was falling at the time!. This entire Interior of Alaska was the original home of the Athabascan people, gold miners, farmers and fur hunters who discovered the riches of this region!.

…algum tempo depois surge-nos o Lago Summit, também quase coberto de gelo, localizado acima da linha das árvores na encosta sul da Cordilheira do Alaska, a uma altitude de 3.300 pés, alimentado por glaciares que vão derretendo e por vários riachos!. Dizem-nos que este maravilhoso lago tem até 91 m de profundidade e está coberto de gelo até 1,5 m de espessura desde Novembro até meados de Junho!. 

…some time later Summit Lake appears, also almost covered in ice, located above the tree line on the southern slope of the Alaska Range, at an altitude of 3,300 feet, fed by melting glaciers and several streams!. We are told that this wonderful lake is up to 91 m deep and is covered in ice up to 1.5 m thick from November until mid-June!. 

…esta área é conhecida pela corrida anual de esqui e máquinas de neve “Arctic Man Summit Lake Classic”, com a participação de muitos visitantes todos os meses de abril, se o tempo o permitir!. Foi para nós muito gratificante esta passagem pelas montanhas do interior do Alaska!. Valeu a pena!. 

…this area is known for the annual “Arctic Man Summit Lake Classic” ski and snow machine race, attended by many visitors every April, weather permitting!. This trip through the mountains of the interior of Alaska was very rewarding for us!. Worth it!. 

…até que descendo, descendo, chegámos à pequena cidade de Delta Junction, onde as placas de sinalização nos dizem que chegámos ao fim do “Histórico Alaska Highway”, e que está localizada a uma curta distância ao sul da confluência do rio Delta com o rio Tanana!. Andámos por lá e tirámos fotografias, no entanto o Marco Histórico que assiná-la o fim da famosa estrada foi removido para reparação!. No lado sul está o parque da “Sullivan Roadhouse”, onde admirámos entre outras coisas os diversos veículos antigos, que foram utilizados na construção desta hoje famosa estrada!. Também visitámos o Centro de Visitas recebendo valiosa informação!. 

…until down, down, we reached the small town of Delta Junction, where the signposts tell us we have reached the end of the “Historic Alaska Highway”, and which is located a short distance south of the confluence of the Delta River with the Tanana River!. We walked around and took photographs, however the Historical Marker that marked the end of the famous road was removed for repairs! On the south side is the “Sullivan Roadhouse” park, where we admired, among other things, the various old vehicles that were used in the construction of this now famous road!. We also visited the Visitor Center and received valuable information!

…e a nossa aventura rumo ao norte continuava, porque a luz do dia podia prolongar-se até 22 horas ou mais, como tal parámos na pequena cidade de North Pole,  percorrendo a rua principal e entrámos no estabelecimento de vendas do Pai Natal, que é a encarnação moderna de um posto comercial!. É uma paragem agradável para quem viaja na Estrada Richardson em direcção ao norte que olhando à sua esquerda, vê uma figura gigante do Pai Natal!.

…and our adventure heading north continued, because daylight could last up to 10 pm or more, so we stopped in the small town of North Pole, walked along the main street and entered Santa Claus’s sales establishment, which It is the modern incarnation of a trading post! It is a pleasant stop for those traveling on the Richardson Road heading north who, looking to their left, see a giant figure of Santa Claus!.

…sempre rumo ao norte, finalmente chegámos à cidade de Fairbanks!. Aqui, ainda com luz do dia, seguimos em direção a Fox, uma pequena povoação ao norte, onde existe um parque chamado “The Trans Alaska Oil Pipeline”, onde  podemos caminhar até ao Pipeline, admirar a sua dimensão, ver partes do seu actual funcionamento, tocá-lo, ler informação, e tirar fotografias!.  

…always heading north, we finally arrived in the city of Fairbanks!. Here, still with daylight, we head towards Fox, a small town to the north, where there is a park called “The Trans Alaska Oil Pipeline”, where we can walk to the Pipeline, admire its size, see parts of its current operation, touch it, read information, and take photos!.  

…e um pouco ainda mais para norte, havia o famoso “Turtle Club Restaurante”, que também visitámos, e não é necessário ler o “cardápio”, é só olhar para a mesa ao lado e dizer:“quero um igual àquele”, onde nos serviram o maior bife de búfalo que jamais tínhamos visto!. Finalmente regressámos à cidade de Fairbanks onde pernoitámos num parque de RV, onde já tínhamos estado em anos anteriores!.

…and a little further north, there was the famous “Turtle Club Restaurant”, which we also visited, and it is not necessary to read the “menu”, just look at the table next to it and say: “I want one like that”, where we were served the biggest buffalo steak we had ever seen!. Finally we returned to the city of Fairbanks where we spent the night in an RV park, where we had been in previous years!.

…Expedição ao Alaska24 (Dia 6) …Alaskan Expedition24 (Day 6)

…nas 397 milhas percorridas no dia de hoje, tivemos céu azul, nevoeiro, chuva quase torrencial e céu um pouco enevoado!. Isto é um exemplo da aventura que é…, de quem já pensou na “sua viagem de uma vida”…, que é sem sombra de qualquer dúvida, uma viagem por terra até ao Alaska!.

…in the 397 miles covered today, blue sky, fog, almost torrential rain and a slightly misty sky!. This is an example of the adventure that it is…, for anyone who has ever thought about “their trip of a lifetime”…, which is without a shadow of a doubt, an overland trip to Alaska!.

…cá vai a continuação!.

…era manhã quando retornámos de novo ao Parque Nacional de Yellowstone rumo ao norte, pela estrada do estado #89!. Parando aqui e ali, seguindo o caminho mais lento e panorâmico possível, para atrasar ao máximo o fim inevitável de ter que deixar de observar este cenário agradável e panorâmico, serpenteando à volta desta maravilha da natureza que é o norte do Parque Nacional de Yellowstone!.

…here goes the continuation!

…it was morning when we returned to Yellowstone National Park heading north, along state road #89!. Stopping here and there, following the slowest and most scenic route possible, to delay as long as possible the regular end of having to stop observing this scenic and panoramic scenery, winding around this wonder of nature that is the north of Yellowstone National Park!.

…em algumas áreas os búfalos, alces, ursos ou lobos, tal como outros  animais pastavam ou atravessavam a estrada e em outras áreas parecia um cenário lunar, com áreas queimadas pela água quente que brotava das profundezas deste planeta a que chamamos Terra!.

…in some areas buffaloes, elk, bears or wolves, as well as other animals grazed or crossed the road and in other areas it looked like a lunar scenario, with areas burned by the hot water that sprang from the depths of this planet we call Earth!.

…tudo isto até que chegámos (para sair), a uma das cinco entradas do Parque, sendo esta a segunda entrada mais popular de Yellowstone, situada próximo da pequena cidade de Gardiner, já em Montana, fundada 8 anos depois que Yellowstone foi considerado um parque nacional, onde estão localizados o “Roosevelt Arch” e a “Mammoth Hot Springs”!. 

…all this until we arrived (to leave) at one of the five entrances to the Park, this being the second most popular entrance to Yellowstone, located close to the small town of Gardiner, in Montana, founded 8 years after Yellowstone was considered a national park, where “Roosevelt Arch” and “Mammoth Hot Springs” are located!. 

…o “Roosevelt Arch” é um arco triunfal rústico!. Foi construído sob a supervisão do Exército dos EUA em Fort Yellowstone, e a sua pedra fundamental foi lançada pelo presidente Theodore Roosevelt no ano de 1903!.. No topo do arco está inscrito uma citação da Lei Orgânica de 1872, a legislação que criou Yellowstone, que diz: “Para o benefício e prazer do povo”. Hoje, este arco é contornado pela Estrada #89, e é quase obrigatório passar debaixo do Arco para se entrar nesta estrada!.

…the “Roosevelt Arch” is a rustic triumphal arch!. It was built under the supervision of the US Army at Fort Yellowstone, and its cornerstone was laid by President Theodore Roosevelt in the year 1903!.. At the top of the arch is inscribed a quote from the Organic Act of 1872, the legislation that created Yellowstone, which says: “For the benefit and pleasure of the people.” Today, this arch is bypassed by Road #89, and it is almost mandatory to pass under the Arch to enter this road!.  

…foi quase como uma entrada cerimonial, no entanto…, algum tempo depois de entrar-mos nesta estrada com algum cenário, iniciámos a travessia de uma das maiores tempestades já vividas em viajem, com rajadas de vento ciclónico, chuva e alguma trovoada!.

…it was almost like a ceremonial entry, however…, some time after entering this road with some scenery, we began to cross one of the biggest storms ever experienced while traveling, with gusts of cyclonic wind, rain and some thunder!.

…até que chegámos à cidade de Livingston, entrando na estrada rápida I-90 no sentido oeste…, onde já havia sol e céu limpo!.

…until we arrived in the city of Livingston, entering the fast highway I-90 heading west…, where there was already sun and clear skies!.

…e, antes de entrar na estrada SR #287 rumo ao norte, parámos num lugar que já conhecíamos de viagens anteriores!. É a “Wheat Montana Bakery & Deli”, é uma propriedade familiar, com centenas de anos, que foi paragem de diligências, onde os viajantes se podiam refugiar e reabastecer, e hoje  confecciona pão de muitas qualidades!. As simpáticas empregadas, perguntam sempre se querem o pão quente, se querem manteiga, o café quente é muito bom, podendo ainda comprar pão fresco para levar, e foi o que fizemos!.

…and, before entering the SR #287 road heading north, we stopped at a place we already knew from previous trips!. It’s “Wheat Montana Bakery & Deli”, a family property, hundreds of years old, that was a stagecoach stop, where travelers could take refuge and refuel, and today bread of many qualities is made! The friendly waitresses always ask if you want hot bread, if you want butter, the hot coffee is very good, and you can even buy fresh bread to take away, and that’s what we did!

…e com a continuação de bom tempo, continuamos a nossa jornada rumo ao norte pela estrada US Route 287, com um cenário “panorâmico e autêntico de Montana”, com vistas deslumbrantes do “Big Sky”, fazendas autênticas da América do século XIX, com passagens por pequenas montanhas e planícies, com alguma vida selvagem onde ainda se podem ver búfalos, ovelhas e alces ou algum pássaro incrível, em áreas com plantação de trigo e outros cereais!. 

…and with the continuation of good weather, we continued our journey north along US Route 287, with a “scenic and authentic Montana” setting, with stunning views of the “Big Sky”, authentic farms of 19th century America, with passes through small mountains and barriers, with some wildlife where you can even see buffaloes, sheep and elk or some incredible birds, in areas with wheat and other cereals plantations!. 

…enfim, um cenário muito agradável ao longo de um extenso planalto no coração de “Big Country”, que na verdade…, não é para os pouco aventureiros!. Pernoitámos num parque de RV já próximo da cidade de Helena!.

…all in all, a very pleasant setting along an extensive plateau in the heart of the “Big Country”, which in truth… is not for the unadventurous!. We spent the night in an RV park close to the city of Helena!

…Expedição ao Alaska24 (Dia 5) …Alaskan Expedition24 (Day 5)

…viajar, por vezes não é um luxo é uma necessidade do espírito humano…, e nós, nesta um pouco avançada idade, uma das entre outras razões, viajamos porque nos sentimos desconfortáveis por estar confortáveis demais!.  E quando viajamos, o mundo é a nossa casa, o céu é o nosso teto onde penduramos o boné e…, todas as pessoas que encontramos nos locais mais remotos por onde andamos…, são parte da nossa família, porque preferimos olhar para a nossa vida, e dizer: “não acredito que fiz isto” em vez de dizer: “se ao menos tivesse feito isto”!. 

…travel, sometimes is not a luxury, it is a necessity of the human spirit…, and we, at this slightly advanced age, one of the other reasons, we travel because we feel uncomfortable because we are too comfortable!.  And when we travel, the world is our home, the sky is our roof where we hang our cap and…, all the people we meet in the most remote places we travel…, are part of our family, because we prefer to look at our life, and say, “I can’t believe I did this” instead of saying, “If only I had done this”! 

…vamos então explicar por onde andámos neste quinto dia!. 

…no início da manhã saímos da cidade de Cody, Wyoming em direcção ao oeste, naquela que é considerada a estrada com o cenário mais bonito do estado de Wyoming (SR #16-20-14) que nos levou até ao Yellowstone National Park!. Íamos de encontro à Cordilheira das Montanhas Rochosas, o céu estava limpo e com tonalidade azul e…, a um certo ponto do nossa rota surge-nos um cenário um pouco invulgar!. 

…so let’s explain where we’ve been on this fifth day! 

…early in the morning we left the city of Cody, Wyoming heading west, on what is considered the road with the most beautiful scenery in the state of Wyoming (SR #16-20-14) that took us to Yellowstone National Park! . We were heading towards the Rocky Mountain Range, the sky was clear and blue and…, at a certain point on our route a slightly unusual scenery appeared!. 

…era uma formação rochosa para lá de um pequeno rio que deslizava suavemente e que…, depois de ler a legenda escrita num painel, dizia que aquela área ficou conhecida como “Cidade Santa”, claro, tudo isto depois que alguns grupos turísticos que visitavam a área de Yellowstone dizerem: “que o seu perfil lembrava da antiga Jerusalém”!.

…it was a rock formation beyond a small river that flowed gently and that…, after reading the caption written on a panel, it said that that area became known as “Holy City”, of course, all this after some tourist groups that visited the Yellowstone area to say: “its profile was reminiscent of ancient Jerusalem”!.

…e o nome de “Cidade Santa”, pegou!. E nós, depois de admirar o cenário verificamos que toda aquela área é uma formação rochosa única criada há milhões de anos, talvez através de violentas erupções vulcânicas!. Havia outros viajantes tal como nós que paravam e iam admirar o cenário e alguns diziam que conheciam a lenda e que: “cada vez que passavam é diferente porque o sol é diferente, de manhã há muitas sombras e vêem-se torres”!. Outros diziam: “não pensamos que sejam torres nem tanto como uma cidade, mas como uma colecção de torres”!. A nós, também nos pareceu uma colecção de torres e…, eram deslumbrantes e valeu a pena parar!.

…and the name of the “Holy City” stuck! And we, after admiring the scenery, realized that the entire area is a unique rock formation created millions of years ago, perhaps through violent volcanic eruptions! There were other travelers like us who stopped and admired the scenery and some said that they knew the legend and that: “every time they pass by it is different because the sun is different, in the morning there are many shadows and you can see towers”!. Others said: “we don’t think of them as towers, not so much as a city, but as a collection of towers”!. To us, it also seemed like a collection of towers and…, they were stunning and worth stopping by!

…continuámos a nossa rota rumo ao oeste parando na entrada leste do  Yellowstone National Park para a foto junto do painel informativo!. Este  parque é famoso por entre outras atrações, tem os seus “Geysers”, que são umas fontes termais, que entram em erupção periodicamente, lançando uma coluna de água quente e vapor para o ar…, que podemos observar, caminhando por umas “passadeiras”, em madeira que nos dão acesso, mesmo em frente às colunas de água quente e vapor, que se perdem na atmosfera!.

…we continued our route westwards, stopping at the eastern entrance to Yellowstone National Park for a photo next to the information panel!. This park is famous for, among other attractions, it has its “Geysers”, which are hot springs, which erupt periodically, releasing a column of hot water and steam into the air…, which we can observe, walking along some “treadmills”. ”, in wood that gives us access, right in front of the columns of hot water and steam, which are lost in the atmosphere!.

…o centro do grande ecosistema de Yellowstone, é um dos maiores ecosistemas de clima temperado ainda restantes no planeta e…, o “Geyser” mais famoso do mundo, denominado “Old Faithful”, do qual nos podemos aproximar, encontra-se neste parque!. 

…the center of the great Yellowstone ecosystem, is one of the largest remaining temperate climate ecosystems on the planet and…, the most famous “Geyser” in the world, called “Old Faithful”, which we can get close to, is located in this park!. 

…felizmente não durante a nossa visita, mas Yellowstone já registou três grandes eventos eruptivos nos últimos 2,2 milhões de anos, o último dos quais ocorreu há aproximadamente 640.000 anos!. Estas erupções são as de maiores proporções ocorridas neste “calhau” a que chamamos Terra e…, durante esse período de tempo, provocou alguma alteração no clima em períodos posteriores à sua ocorrência!.

…fortunately not during our visit, but Yellowstone has recorded three major eruptive events in the last 2.2 million years, the last of which occurred approximately 640,000 years ago!. These eruptions are the largest to occur on this “pebble” that we call Earth and…, during that period of time, they caused some changes in the climate in periods subsequent to their occurrence!.

…e mais ainda, porque também nos dizem que, muito antes de haver presença humana em Yellowstone, pois essa presença remonta mais ou menos a 11.000 anos, uma grande erupção vulcânica, ejectou um volume imenso de cinza vulcânica que cobriu todo o oeste dos USA, a maioria do centro-oeste, o norte do México e algumas áreas da costa leste do Oceano Pacífico, deixando uma enorme  caldeira vulcânica, assentada sobre uma câmara magmática!.

…and even more so, because we are also told that, long before there was a human presence in Yellowstone, as this presence dates back more or less 11,000 years, a large volcanic eruption ejected an immense volume of volcanic ash that covered the entire western USA , most of the Midwest, northern Mexico and some areas of the east coast of the Pacific Ocean, leaving a huge volcanic caldera, sitting on a magma chamber!.

…depois de explicar este rol de acontecimentos, percorremos o parque, em quase todo o lugar em podíamos ter acesso!. Parando aqui e ali, vimos os “Geysers”, com as suas diferentes cores, que correspondem aos diferentes minerais, que brotam do seu interior, cascatas de água pura, saindo das montanhas, rios de água quente, atravessámos o “Continental Divide”, que é o nome dado ao conjunto de linhas formado por uma série de cumes na América do Norte, que separam as bacias hidrográficas que drenam para o oceano Pacífico, oceano Atlântico, incluindo o Golfo do México e mesmo até o oceano Ártico, onde uma das suas linhas divisórias, passa aqui no Parque de Yellowstone!.

…after explaining this list of events, we walked around the park, almost everywhere we could access it!. Stopping here and there, we saw the “Geysers”, with their different colors, which correspond to the different minerals, that spring from their interior, waterfalls of pure water, coming out of the mountains, rivers of hot water, we crossed the “Continental Divide”, which is the name given to the set of lines formed by a series of ridges in North America, which separate the river basins that drain into the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, including the Gulf of Mexico and even the Arctic Ocean, where one of the its dividing lines, passes here in Yellowstone Park!.

…também tivemos a felicidade de ver alguns animais, dos quais dizem haver no parque uma grande variedade de vida selvagem, na qual se incluem ursos pretos e castanhos, lobos, búfalos, alces e muitos outros animais!. 

…we were also fortunate to see some animals, of which the park is said to have a wide variety of wildlife, including black and brown bears, wolves, buffalo, elk and many other animals!. 

…e o dia era de um céu azul deslumbrante…, com tempo suficiente para ir em direcção ao sul e entrar no Grand Teton National Park, que ocupa um vale, alimentado pelo rio Snake, que com muita frequência forma pequenos lagos, ou de um dos seus afluentes, o rio Gros Ventre, que também por aqui passa antes de entrar no Parque Nacional de Yellowstone!. 

…and the day was a dazzling blue sky…, with enough time to head south and enter Grand Teton National Park, which occupies a valley, fed by the Snake River, which very often forms small lakes, or a one of its tributaries, the Gros Ventre River, which also passes through here before entering Yellowstone National Park!. 

…a vida selvagem aqui também é constante, mesmo vista da estrada ou nas nossas frequentes paragens, apreciando entre outras, o pico mais alto das montanhas de Teton, o “Grand Teton”, que foi baptizado por um caçador francês, que devia de ser uma pessoa romântica, pois ao observá-lo, do lado do estado de Idaho, logo lhe chamou “tétons”, que dizem que é um calão francês que designa “mamilos” e…, cuja elevação média do vale é de mais de 6.500 pés acima do nível do mar, onde aparecem as grandes montanhas da Cordilheira Teton, que podem atingir mais de outros 6.500 pés de altura!.

..wildlife here is also constant, even seen from the road or in our frequent stops, enjoying among others, the highest peak of the Teton mountains, the “Grand Teton”, which was named by a French hunter, who must of being a romantic person, because when observing it, from the side of the state of Idaho, he immediately called it “tetons”, which is said to be a French slang term that designates “nipples” and…, whose average elevation of the valley is more than 6,500 feet above sea level, where the great mountains of the Teton Range appear, which can reach more than another 6,500 feet in height!.

 …da última vez que visitámos este parque, em algumas áreas e em alguns momentos estava nevando, tornando quase impossível parar em alguns locais onde o cenário era deslumbrante, no entanto, desta vez havia céu quase azul, e houve tempo para fotografar as ruínas do que é o celeiro considerado mais fotografado dos USA, a oeste da estrada conhecida como Mormon Row, próximo da cadeia de montanhas que está quase sobre ele, formando uma composição visual impressionante!. No entanto, o local não é apenas famoso porque é fotogênico, porque o celeiro é tudo o que resta da propriedade construída por Thomas Alma Moulton e seus filhos entre 1912 e 1945!.

…the last time we visited this park, in some areas and at times it was snowing, making it almost impossible to stop in some places where the scenery was stunning, however, this time there were almost blue skies, and there was time to photograph the ruins of the park. which is considered the most photographed barn in the USA, west of the road known as Mormon Row, close to the mountain range that is almost above it, forming an impressive visual composition!. However, the site is not just famous because it is photogenic, because the barn is all that remains of the property built by Thomas Alma Moulton and his sons between 1912 and 1945!.

…e o fim do dia aproximava-se e…, como mandam os regulamentos do Parque Nacional Yellowstone, ninguém pode dormir dentro do parque sem ser autorizado e, como nesta época ainda só um ou dois Parques de RV lá dentro estão abertos e com reservas de há alguns meses, claro, estão esgotados, ou seja não existe nenhum lugar!. Resultado!. Saímos, vindo dormir fora do lado oeste, já no estado de Montana, e regressámos ao parque ao outro dia pela manhã!. 

…and the end of the day approached and…, as per Yellowstone National Park regulations, no one can sleep inside the park without authorization and, as at this time of year, only one or two RV parks inside are open and with reservations a few months ago, of course, they are sold out, that is, there is no place!. Result!. We left, sleeping outside on the west side, in the state of Montana, and returned to the park the next morning!.

…fragmentos do tempo, do tempo que nos resta!. (…fragments of time, of the time we have left)!.

…a Páscoa já passou, qualquer dia é Natal e não há nada a fazer, no entanto, os dias estão a ficar mais luminosos e os primeiros pássaros vão aparecendo…, vindos do sul!.  É a Mãe Natureza a desabrochar com a chegada da primavera, e nós…, pelo menos durante as nossas caminhadas, vamos aproximando-nos da natureza, porque “quando os humanos se afastam da natureza o seu coração torna-se muito mais difícil”!. 

…Easter has passed, any day is Christmas and there is nothing to do, however, the days are getting brighter and the first birds are appearing…, coming from the south!. It’s Mother Nature blossoming with the arrival of spring, and we…, at least during our walks, we get closer to nature, because “when humans move away from nature their hearts become much harder”! .

…não somos nós que o afirmamos, porque este “ditado” pertence ao povo das tribos Lakota, que foram os moradores das pradarias do norte, junto de grandes rebanhos de búfalos, e eram grandes pensadores e enormes defensores do meio ambiente, e por certo que se hoje vivessem, ficariam aterrorizados com as misérias que nos chegam em catadupa…, porque o mundo continua uma desgraça!.

…we are not the ones who affirm it, because this “saying” belongs to the people of the Lakota tribes, who were residents of the northern prairies, along with large herds of buffalo, and were great thinkers and enormous defenders of the environment, and of course If they lived today, they would be terrified by the miseries that come at us in a rush…, because the world continues to be a disgrace!.

…quando éramos jovens, sobretudo as crianças ao redor foram umas “sortudas”, porque os adultos protegiam-nas, e neste momento…, está tudo muito pior do que a algum tempo antes da primavera, porque infelizmente os humanos, já é raro semearem amor, paz e felicidade, não pensando que quando formos apenas pó, sobretudo aquelas que hoje são crianças, quando forem adultos…, vão receber um mundo onde as flores silvestres que hoje vemos na beira do caminho, vão murchar antes de abrirem e crescer!.

…when we were young, especially the children around us were “lucky”, because the adults protected them, and at this moment…, everything is much worse than it was some time before spring, because unfortunately, humans, it is rare to sow love, peace and happiness, not thinking that when we are just dust, especially those who are children today, when they are adults…, they will receive a world where the wild flowers that we see on the roadside today, will wither before they open and grow! .

…companheiros de jornada, continuamos a sonhar, talvez calando a revolta que por vezes nos acompanha ao ver alguns humanos a transgredir tudo aquilo que nós conhecemos!. Não tememos a aventura de viver num mundo como o actual, porque o nosso espírito não conhece outra verdade do que aquela que nos pode levar honestamente até às fronteiras do impossível, mas assim…, com guerras, bombas a rebentar matando crianças e inocentes, deixando fome e destruição, CLARO QUE NÃO e…,“no dia em que deixarmos de sonhar, mandem-nos flores brancas”!.

…companions on the journey, we continue to dream, perhaps silencing the revolt that sometimes accompanies us when we see some humans transgressing everything we know!. We do not fear the adventure of living in a world like the current one, because our spirit knows no other truth than the one that can honestly take us to the borders of the impossible, but like this…, with wars, bombs exploding killing children and innocents, leaving hunger and destruction , OF COURSE NOT and…, “on the day we stop dreaming, send us white flowers”!.

…tenham todos a continuação de dias mais luminosos e a ver e ouvir os primeiros pássaros que vão aparecendo vindos do sul…, com a Mãe Natureza a desabrochar com a chegada da primavera!.
