Loop da Península Olímpica, Washington. (Olympic Peninsula Loop, Washington!).

…o horizonte do centro de Seattle, bem como as Montanhas Olímpicas e Cascade, Mount Raineier, Mount Baker, Elliott Bay e as ilhas vizinhas, podem ser vistas do topo da Space Needle!.

…the downtown Seattle skyline, as well as the Olympic and Cascade Mountains, Mount Raineier, Mount Baker, Elliott Bay and surrounding islands can be viewed from the top of the Space Needle!.

…guiando por um labirinto viaturas, que é muito típico nas grandes cidades, chegámos à área do Porto de Seattle, com muita sorte, encontrámos um espaço para a nossa “White Fox” (caravana) descansar!.

…quando tencionávamos abandonar a cidade de Seattle, surge sol e céu azul, num momento tirámos algumas fotos no que entendemos ser, o melhor local, na frente da Baía!.

…quando entrámos no Highway 101, no sentido norte, a nossa intenção é percorrer a área das Montanhas Olímpicas, em toda a sua extensão, pois talvez amanhã, quando regressarmos pela costa do Oceano Pacífico, no sentido sul, nos disseram que o cenário é único!.

…a Floresta Nacional Olímpica é uma Floresta Nacional dos USA, localizada em Washington, com uma área de 628.115 acres (2.541,89 km2), quase envolve o Parque Nacional Olímpico e a Serra Olímpica!. A Floresta Nacional Olímpica contém partes dos condados de Clallam, Grays Harbor, Jefferson e Mason!. A paisagem da floresta nacional varia, desde a Floresta Tropical Olímpica temperada, até ao fiorde de água salgada do Canal da Capota, e estende-se  até aos picos do Monte Washington!.

...the Olympic National Forest is a USA National Forest located in Washington, with an area of 628,115 acres (2,541.89 km2), it nearly surrounds Olympic National Park and the Olympic Mountain range!. Olympic National Forest contains parts of Clallam, Grays Harbor, jefferson and Mason counties!. The landscape of the national forest varies, from the temperate Olympic rain forest to the salt water fjord of Hood Canal to the peaks of Mt. Washington!.

…paramos nesta pitoresca povoação, de Port Angeles, que há muitos anos se chamava “Puerto de Nuestra Señora de los Angeles”, que foi explorado pelo explorador espanhol Francisco de Eliza em 1791!. Em meados do século 19, após a colonização dos ingleses dos Estados Unidos, o nome foi encurtado e parcialmente anglicizado em sua forma atual de Port Angeles Harbour!. 

…stop at this picturesque village, the city’s harbor was dubbed “Puerto de Nuestra Senora de los Ángeles” (Port of Our Lady of the Angels) by Spanish explorer Francisco de Eliza in 1791!. …íamos entrando na floresta do parque Olímpico, com 8,5 milhas de comprimento, o Dungeness Spit é a maior área de areia do mundo e abriga o Refúgio Nacional da Vida Selvagem de Dungeness!. O refúgio é um santuário para mais de 250 espécies de aves, 41 espécies de mamíferos terrestres e oito espécies de mamíferos aquáticos!. As suas trilhas e áreas para piquenique oferecem vistas deslumbrantes das praias, do porto de Dungeness e do estreito de Juan de Fuca!.

…we were entering the forest of the Olympic park, 8.5 miles long, the Dungeness Spit is the largest sand area in the world and is home to the National Wildlife Refuge of Dungeness !. The refuge is a sanctuary for more than 250 species of birds, 41 species of land mammals and eight species of aquatic mammals !. Its trails and picnic areas offer stunning views of the beaches, the port of Dungeness and the Juan de Fuca Strait!.

…a Floresta Nacional Olímpica, é um a área onde a paisagem da floresta varia, pois vai desde uma zona temperada, passando pelos fiordes de água salgada do Canal da Capota, até aos picos do Monte Washington, como tal, aqui está sol, ali chove, acolá pode estar nevoeiro e mais além a temperatura é fresca, quente ou assim, assim!. 

…the National Olympic Forest, is an area where the landscape of the forest varies, ranging from a temperate zone, passing through the salt water fjords of the Hood Canal, to the peaks of Mt. … como já devem de ter observado nas fotos, o clima mudou!. Entrámos na área no Parque Nacional Olímpico, localizado no estado de Washington, na Península Olímpica!. O parque tem quatro regiões básicas, o litoral do Pacífico, as áreas alpinas, a floresta tropical temperada do lado oeste e as florestas do lado leste mais seco!. Dentro do parque existem três ecossistemas distintos, que são florestas sub-alpinas e prados selvagens, florestas temperadas e a costa do Pacífico!. Esses três ecossistemas diferentes estão em condições precárias e têm um cenário excepcional!. 

…as you may have noticed in the photos, the weather has changed!. We entered the Olympic national Park located in the state of Washington, on the Olympic Peninsula!. The park has four basic regions, the Pacific coastline, alpine areas, the west side temperate rainforest and the forests of the drier east side!. Within the park there are three distinct ecosystems which are sub-alpine forest and wildflower meadow, temperate forest, and the rugged Pacific Shore. These three different ecosystems are in pristine condition and have outstanding scenery!.

…para milhares de espécies marinhas, Ruby Beach é uma das áreas mais visitadas do Parque Nacional Olímpico, onde as suas águas costeiras são um porto seguro!. O ambiente marinho e as ilhas marítimas são protegidas por três refúgios nacionais de vida selvagem e pelo Santuário Marinho Nacional da Costa Olímpica!.

…for thousands of marine species, Ruby Beach is one of the most visited areas of the Olympic National Park, where its coastal waters are a safe haven !. The marine environment and maritime islands are protected by three national wildlife refuges and by the National Marine Sanctuary on the Olympic Coast!.

…como praticamente todas as praias da costa norte, Ruby Beach tem uma tremenda quantidade de madeira flutuante!. É notável pelo número de pilhas de madeira, que por ali estão. A praia é chamada por causa dos cristais de rubi na areia da praia!. 

…like virtually all beaches on the northern coast, Ruby Beach has a tremendous amount of driftwood. It is notable for the number of sea stacks there. The Beach is so called because of the ruby-like crystals in the beach sand!.

…os refúgios administram as ilhas visíveis acima das águas da maré alta por 135 milhas ao longo da costa. Grandes colónias de ninhos de pássaros, como murres comuns e papagaios-do-mar, precisam desses postos avançados rochosos. Kalaloch e Ruby Beach estão localizadas na costa sudoeste da Península Olímpica e são acessíveis diretamente da estrada101, onde viajávamos rumo ao sul!.

…the refuges manage the islands visible above the waters of high tide for 135 miles along the coast. Large colonies of bird nests, such as common murres and puffins, need these rock outposts. Kalaloch and Ruby Beach are located on the southwest coast of the Olympic Peninsula and are accessible directly from Highway 101, where we were traveling south!.

…desça para a praia devagar, com atenção às pedras que lhe aparecem pelo caminho e, quando chegar à praia, tire o seu calçado, calque a areia, passe sobre os troncos de árvores perdidas pela praia, que já tiveram vida e agora servem para tornar esta praia única, levante a cabeça e olhe em seu redor, o cenário, com as ondas do mar do Pacifico, subindo para as rochas, que estão ali há milhões de anos, resistentes, nesse momento medite, pegue na sua camara fotográfica, e divirta-se!

…vivemos no estado da Florida, praias lindas e desertas, com areia branca, não nos faltam, mas por aqui é diferente, esta costa de Washington, acidentada e isolada, é um diamante em bruto, ao longo do poderoso Oceano Pacífico!. Conhecido mais por ondas enormes, fortes tempestades que formam lagoas de marés, do que para bronzeamento, natação e usar fato de banho, as praias do Parque Nacional Olímpico não são esse típico destino de praia!. Mais de 73 milhas de litoral natural, que não é perturbado, designado como uma região selvagem, estão prontos para serem explorados por nós, que também adoramos sol, pois vivemos no estado da Florida, somos caminhantes de dia, de aventuras, que gostamos também de carregar uma mochila, mas aqui, as praias são um retorno a uma região selvagem, pura e, onde ainda se pode apreciar a natureza, tal como ela é!.

…we live in the state of Florida, beautiful beaches and deserted, with white sand, we do not lack, but here it is different, this  rugged, isolated Washington Coast is a diamond in the rough along the mighty Pacific Ocean!. Known more for huge waves, serious storms and tide pools than for sun tanning, swimming, and little swimsuits, the beaches of Olympic National Park are not your typical beach destination!. …quando, por volta do ano de 1884, Samuel Benn fundou o que é hoje a cidade de Aberdeen e, que se tornou na maior e mais conhecida cidade no porto de Grays, talvez nunca tivesse imaginado que nós, habitantes da Florida, por aqui passássemos, com alguma vontade de chegar ao sul leste dos USA!. Foi o que fizemos, passámos, compramos alguma gasolina, água e pão, e ao mesmo tempo que dissemos Bem Vindo, também dissemos Adeus!.

…passamos pelas ruas de Long Beach, mas não fomos ver a praia, pois o tempo era pouco para completar o programa de viajem que tínhamos para hoje!.

…a ponte de Astoria Megler, é uma estructura em ferro, formando arcos, através do Rio Columbia, entre Point Ellice, perto de Megler, em Washington, e Astoria, já no Oregon. É uma “estrela de cinema”, a própria ponte é proeminente no cinema, filmes como “Short Circuit”, “Kindergarten Cop”, Free Willy ” e “Free Willy 2” ou “The Goonies”, é ainda esta ponte que se vê, em a “Fada da Madison Bridge”, em “Irwin Allen”, ou no filme de desastre, feito em 1979 para a TV, “The Night the Bridge Fell Down”!. 

…the Astoria Megler Bridge, is a steel cantilever through truss bridge, that spans the Columbia River between Point Ellice near Megler, Washington, and Astoria, Oregon!. Is a “movie star”, the bridge itself is featured prominently in the movies “Short Circuit”, “Kindergarten Cop”, Free Willy” and “Free Willy 2” and “The Goonies”. It stands in for the doomed fictional “Madison Bridge” in “Irwin Allen’s”, 1979 made-for-TV disaster movie “The Night the Bridge Fell Down”!.

…localizada a 14 miles (23 km) da foz do rio, a ponte é de 4,6 milhas (6,6 km) de comprimento e foi o último segmento completo da estrada 101, entre Olympia, Washington e Los Angeles, Califórnia. É a ponte com estructura em ferro contínua, mais longa da América do Norte e, ao atravessá-la, sobre o Rio Columbia, chegamos ao estado de Oregon!. 

…located 14 miles (23 km) from the mouth of the river, the bridge is 4.1 miles (6.6 km) long and was the last completed segment of U. S. Route 101 between Olympia, Washington, and Los Angeles, California. It is the longest continuous truss bridge in North America, and as we crossed it over the Columbia River, we arrived in Oregon!.

”Terceira Expedição ao Antigo Oeste”!. (4) ”Third Expedition to the Old West”!. (4)

…pernoitámos num parque de RV próximo da área das “Black Hills” (colinas negras), que abriga vários locais históricos e cheia de beleza natural!. Ainda muito cedo, quase madrugada, depois de comprarmos café, biscoitos e encher o tanque da nossa “White Fox” (caravana), iniciámos a viajem para o nosso próximo destino, que era o “Mount Rushmore National Memorial”, uma escultura maciça esculpida no Monte Rushmore, na região de Black Hills, em Dakota do Sul!. 

…we stayed overnight in a RV park near the “Black Hills” area, which houses various historical places full of natural beauty!. Still very early, almost dawn, after buying coffee, cookies and filling the tank of our “White Fox”, (caravan) we started the trip to our next destination, which was the “Mount Rushmore National Memorial”, a massive sculpture carved on Mount Rushmore, in the Black Hills region, in South Dakota!.

…como tal, depressa chegámos àquela área, passando pela cidade de Keystone, que para nós e dado a ser ainda muito cedo, felizmente estava quase deserta, porque noutra pequena cidade desta área, se celebrava a “semana das motas”, proporcionando um tráfico absolutamente catastrófico, com centenas de motos, talvez milhares, em alguns lugares e ocupando não só a estrada, como quase todas as áreas de descanso!. 

…as such, we quickly reached that area, passing through the city of Keystone, which for us and being too early, fortunately was almost deserted, because in another small town in this area, the “motorcycle week” was celebrated, providing absolutely catastrophic traffic, with hundreds of motorcycles, perhaps thousands, in some places and occupying not only the road, but all rest areas!

…Keystone é uma cidade na região de “Black Hills”, no Dakota do Sul!. A sua população ultrapassa um poco as duas centenas e as suas origens deviam de ter começado por volta do ano de 1883, como uma cidade mineira, que tirou o nome de uma mina local e desde então, se transformou numa cidade turística, atendendo às necessidades dos milhões de visitantes do “Mount Rushmore National Memorial”, localizado logo ali, ao cimo da montanha, sendo agora  conhecida como o “Playground of the Black Hills”, com mais de 20 atrações!.

…Keystone is a city in the “Black Hills” region in South Dakota!. Its population surpasses a two hundred hundreds and their origins should have started around 1883, as a mining town, which has taken the name of a local mine and since then became a tourist city, meeting the needs of the millions of visitors to “Mount Rushmore National Memorial”, located right there, to the top of the mountain, being now known as the “playground of the Black Hills “, with over 20 attractions!.

…como acima já explicámos, o nosso próximo destino, era o “Mount Rushmore National Memorial”, uma escultura maciça esculpida no Monte Rushmore, na região das “Colinas Negras” e onde estão esculpidos os rostos de quatro Presidentes dos USA, sendo eles, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Rosevelt e Abraham Lincoln!.  

…as we explained above, our next destination was the “Mount Rushmore National Memorial”, a massive sculpture carved on Mount Rushmore, in the “Black Hills” region and where the faces of four US presidents are carved, being George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Rosevelt and Abraham Lincoln!.  

….assim, eis-nos a admirar localmente, a ideia de criar uma escultura nas “Colinas Negras”, que foi idealizada no ano de 1923, por um historiador do estado de Dakota do Sul, que queria encontrar uma maneira de atrair turistas para o estado e…, funcionou, pois este Memorial é visitado por quase 3 milhões de pessoas anualmente!. E hoje, este monumento, é uma das atrações turísticas mais conhecidas no mundo, rendendo ao estado de Dakota do Sul, o cognome de “The Mount Rushmore State”!.

…como curiosidade, inicialmente estimava-se que apenas em seis anos terminavam a escultura real, no entanto foram precisos mais oito anos e meio, que foram consumidos com atrasos devido ao clima e falta de fundos!. A escultura real foi feita por uma equipa de mais de 400 homens, sem qualquer experiência de escultura, pois eram mineiros, que tinham ido até às “Colinas Negras” à procura de ouro, mas embora não fossem artistas, sabiam como usar dinamite e britadeiras, escavando mais de 90% da montanha, usando dinamite, removendo mais de 450.000 toneladas de rocha!.

…as a curiosity, it was initially estimated that only in six years the real sculpture ended, however it was needed eight and a half years, which were consumed with delays due to the climate and lack of funds!. The royal sculpture was made by a team of more than 400 men, without any sculpture experience, as they were miners, who had gone to the “Black Hills” looking for gold, but although they were not artists, they knew how to use dynamite and crushing, excavating more than 90% of the mountain, using dynamite, removing over 450,000 tons of rock!..

…na área e a umas tantas milhas para oeste, existem outros pontos de interesse que quase são considerados obrigatórios, como o Memorial Crazy Horse, (incompleto, mas lentamente progredindo) ou a cidade histórica e colorida de Deadwood, que posteriormente também visitámos!.

…e eis-nos na entrada do “Crazy Horse Memorial”, que é uma escultura inacabada de montanha colossal nas “Colinas Negras” de Dakota do Sul, iniciada em 1948 pelo escultor Korczak Ziolkowski, a pedido do chefe de Oglala Lakota, Henry Standing Bear, para homenagear heróis e cultura de nativos americanos!. É uma homenagem ao líder da guerra de Oglala Lakota, Crazy Horse e…, quando concluído, será a maior escultura no mundo!.

…and we are at the entrance of the “Crazy Horse Memorial”, which is an unfinished colossal mountain sculpture in the South Dakota “Black Hills”, which began in 1948 by sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski, at the request of Ogla Lakota chief, Henry Standing Bear, to honor heroes and culture of American natives!. It is a tribute to Oglala Lakota’s war leader, Crazy Horse and…, when completed, will be the biggest sculpture in the world!.

…quando terminarem, vai ser um monumento gigante, com planos para uma grande vila ou cidade na sua base!. Numa breve história, o “Crazy Horse Memorial”, tal como acima referimos, é um monumento de montanha em construção em terrenos particulares nas “Colinas Negras” e representará o guerreiro Oglala Lakota, Crazy Horse, montando um cavalo, apontando para a distância!.

…continuando, agora rumo um pouco ao norte, visitámos a já acima mencionada cidade histórica de “Deadwood”, temporariamente ocupada pelos motociclistas e pelas suas potentes motas, onde não havia qualquer espaço para caravanas como a nossa!. Resultado, íamos lentamente passando nas principais ruas, esperando por espaço e admirando o cenário de centenas, talvez milhares de motociclistas, montados nas suas motas, parando por momentos, cantando, levantando os braços em sinal de calma e paz!.

…continuing, now heading a little to the north, we visited the aforementioned historic city of “Deadwood”, temporarily occupied by motorcyclists and their powerful bikes, where there was no space for caravans like ours!. Result, we were slowly going through the main streets, waiting for space and admiring the scene of hundreds, perhaps thousands of motorcyclists, mounted on their bikes, stopping for times, singing, raising his arms in a sign of calm and peace!.

…a cidade histórica de Deadwood, situada nas colinas das montanhas das “Colinas Negras”, com uma história de centenas de anos que, por volta do ano de 1870 se formou com um assentamento ilegal, assim como ilegal foi parte da sua vivência, onde cresceram os salões de jogo, vieram as prostitutas, o álcool corria nas gargantas, sendo tudo pago com pepitas de ouro, não havia lei, ou se havia não se respeitava, matava-se por uma pá, uma bacia de limpar a terra do ouro, ou por um burro da carga, enfim, era a lei do mais rápido!.

…tudo isto num território concedido aos índios americanos, no Tratado de Laramie, no ano de 1868, território este, que já pertencia ao povo Lakota, verdadeiros habitantes desta área por séculos, garantia-lhes a posse das montanhas e das “Colinas Negras”, todavia as disputas sobre aquelas colinas continuaram e, tinham que continuar, pois havia lá ouro!.

…o dia já ia um pouco adiantado quando tentávamos regressar à estrada rápida #90 para continuar a nossa rota rumo ao oeste, e claro, não podíamos deixar de visitar também a lendária cidade de Sturgis que se situa no oeste de Dakota do Sul!. Lá, também quase sempre lentamente, pois o espaço era pouco e com um tráfico lento e ocupado, onde se realizava o festival da “Semana das Motas”, anunciando constantemente que era a maior concentração de motas do mundo, o que sinceramente acreditamos pois eram centenas, talvez milhares e milhares que ocupavam tudo o que era espaço!.

…despedimo-nos desta pequena e histórica cidade, onde nos dizem que de o ”Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame”, acenam para o rali de motocicleta Sturgis de longa duração da cidade e abriga motos vintage, além de recordações e fotografias!. Fort Meade, um posto militar do século XIX, e o antigo Museu de Fort Meade, documentando sua história, estão a leste da cidade. Ao sul, a floresta nacional das “Colinas Negras” tem montanhas, desfiladeiros e trilhas acidentadas!. 

…we said goodbye to this small and historic city, where we are told that from the “Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame”, wave to the city’s long-term Sturgis motorcycle rally and houses vintage bikes, as well as memories and photographs!. Fort Meade, a nineteenth -century military post, and the former Fort Meade museum, documenting its history, are east of the city. To the south, the National Forest of the “Black Hills” has mountains, parades and rugged trails!

…e nós, saímos de lá como entrámos, lentamente, retornando à estrada rápida #90, rumo ao oeste, atravessando as planícies de Dakota do Sul, Wyoming e Montana onde pernoitámos num parque de RV, já muito próximo da Estrada Beartooth, que é uma das unidades mais panorâmicas dos USA, que haveríamos de percorrer, talvez amanhã!.

…and we left as we went slowly returning to the Interstate #90, towards the West, crossing the Plains of Dakota do Sul, Wyoming and Montana where we stayed overnight in a RV park, already close to Beartooth road, which is one of the most panoramic USA units that we would go through, maybe tomorrow!.

…perdoem-me, hoje estou triste!. (…forgive me, today I’m sad)!.

…talvez seja da idade já avançada mas…, hoje, sentimos uma manhã fria de autêntico inverno e…, ao acordarmos vemos o mundo onde já não existe lugar para a fuga, porque toneladas de bombas já não são suficientes para satisfazer as mentes diabólicas que infelizmente dirigem as multidões!. Assim…, os noticiários na comunicação social abrem com notícias do oriente ao ocidente, mencionando única e simplesmente destruição, mortes ou famílias com crianças famintas e desalojadas!.

…maybe it’s old age but…, today, we feel a cold morning of true winter and…, when we wake up we see the world where there is no longer any place to escape, because tons of bombs are no longer enough to satisfy the diabolical minds that unfortunately they direct the crowds!. So…, the news in the media opens with news from East to West, mentioning only and simply destruction, deaths or families with hungry and homeless children!.

…às vezes e nos intervalos, também nos mostram as planícies desertas a perder de vista, onde os bisontes vão desaparecendo, as poucas aves de rapina que ainda existem estão enjauladas nos jardins zoológicos, os felinos estão em extinção, toneladas de marfim ditam o fim dos paquidermes, os oceanos são constantemente contaminados, violados e saqueados e…, as grandes geleiras nos polos norte e sul, estão a derreter mais rápido do que o normal e…, o mais importante é que infelizmente, já não nascem tantas crianças!.

…sometimes and at intervals, they also show us the desert plains as far as the eye can see, where bison are disappearing, the few birds of prey that still exist are caged in zoos, felines are becoming extinct, tons of ivory dictate the end of pachyderms, the oceans are constantly contaminated, raped and plundered and…, the large glaciers in the north and south poles, are melting faster than normal and…, the most important thing is that unfortunately, not so many children are born anymore!.

…como tal…, o que nos resta?. Talvez mais rápido do que pensamos…, o exemplo da destruição de Kiev ou de Gaza pintados com sangue humano, (onde os sobreviventes tentam remover dos escombros o que resta dos seus familiares já mortos), poderá vir a aparecer em outras partes do mundo, onde já não existem vidros nas janelas e o gélido vento da impotência vai destruindo a esperança, transformando-nos em seres errantes no meio de uma intensa nuvem do pó explosivo e mortífero das bombas, que nos vai toldando a vista e os sentidos!. 

…as such…, what are we left with? Perhaps faster than we think…, the example of the destruction of Kiev or Gaza painted with human blood, (where survivors try to remove what remains of their dead family members from the rubble), could appear in other parts of the world, where there are no longer any glass in the windows and the cold wind of impotence is destroying hope, transforming us into wandering beings in the midst of an intense cloud of explosive and deadly dust from the bombs, which is clouding our vision and senses!.

…infelizmente, foi sempre assim e assim será…, o homem constrói para destruir!.

…unfortunately, it has always been like this and will always be like this…, man builds to destroy!.
