…somos uns “veteranos”, já ultrapassados! (…we are “veterans”, already outdated)!

…alguns dizem, é a vida!. Mas, sem concordar muito com estas palavras, a vida é o presente!. Porque os anos, os meses e os dias vão passando e pouco a pouco vamos ficando sós, esquecidos… ou lembrados por alguma família ou por alguns amigos, ou talvez com nomes em causas ou monumentos por aquilo que de bom para uns ou de mau para outros fizémos!. E quem sabe, talvez quando o nosso corpo apodrecer, o nome em ruas secundárias onde vivemos, que a muito custo alguns vão recordar!.

(…some say, it’s life!. But, without much agreeing with these words, life is the present!. Because the years, months and days go by and little by little we are left alone, forgotten… or remembered by some family or friends, or perhaps with names in causes or monuments for what is good for some or bad for others we did!. And who knows, maybe when our bodies rot, the name in the back streets where we live, which some will remember at great cost)!.

…no entanto, longe do lugar pacato onde presentemente vivemos, onde continuamos a praticar os usos e costumes do antigamente, existe um outro, lá na Europa, onde o dinheiro (algum fácil), destruiu todas as estruturas sociais!. Estamos numa época sem valores, ou seja, onde o respeito, a solidariedade, aquela amizade que começava em crianças lá na escola primária, onde havia o tal espírito de grupo, já estão ultrapassados!. Infelizmente, os novos exemplos de vida, são apreendidos pelas novas gerações já no seio das suas famílias, o que não facilita em nada a tarefa de nós, os mais velhos e, para mais “veteranos de guerra”!.

(…however, far from the peaceful place where we currently live, where we continue to practice the ways and customs of yesteryear, there is another one, over there in Europe, where money (some easy one) has destroyed all social structures!. We are in a time without values, that is, where respect, solidarity, that friendship that started with children in primary school, where there was such a group spirit, are already outdated!. Unfortunately, the new examples of life are learned by the new generations already within their families, which does not make the task of us, the elders and, for more “war veterans” easier)!.

…porquê?. Porque, para quem trabalhou no “duro”, muito mais de três quartos da sua existência, (forçado a viver num cenário horrivel de guerra nas savanas e pântanos no golfo de África ao serviço da sua pátria, ou seja, da nação onde nasceu, que dá pelo nome de Portugal), hoje sobrevive (alguns doentes), com uma reforma e previlégios ultrapassados, ao contrário de quem dirige os destinos do país, alguns ainda jovens, (que felizmente para eles, nunca viveram uma qualquer guerra), no entanto, controlam tudo, alimentando-se de anormalidades, por vezes semeando desgraças e instabilidade, e vejam lá, que até são acarinhados por alguns meios de comunicação social que entretanto subsidiaram, mesmo não respeitando quem é escolhido pelo voto dos eleitores!.

Because, for those who worked the “hard”, much more than three quarters of their existence, (forced to live in a horrible scenario of war in the savannas and swamps of the Gulf of Africa at the service of their homeland, that is, the nation where they were born, which goes by the name of Portugal), today survives (some patients), with a pension and outdated privileges, unlike those who run the country’s destinies, some still young, (who fortunately for them, have never experienced any war), in the however, they control everything, feeding on abnormalities, sometimes sowing disgrace and instability, and look, they are even cherished by some media that have subsidized in the meantime, even though they do not respect who is chosen by the voters’ vote)!.

…e continuando, o nosso sentimento de alguma revolta vai crescendo, porque nesse maravilhoso país onde nascemos “à beira mar plantado”, lá na Europa, ao qual continuamos ligados até à hora da nossa morte, pelo sentimento de ter dado o corpo às balas num horrivel cenário de guerra em África, defendendo a sua bandeira, os tais meios de comunicação, abrem o “six o’clock news”, (noticiário das seis horas), anunciando problemas de corrupção de alguns governantes e não só, que são chamados à barra do tribunal acompanhados de advogados que fizeram ou contribuiram para o ordenamento das leis que rejem o país, deixando aqui e ali “aquelas fugas” necessárias para que os problemas se arrastem até ficarem resolvidos única e simplesmente pela absolvição dos mesmos, nem que seja porque o seu prazo legal expirou!. 

(…and continuing, our feeling of some revolt grows, because in this wonderful country where we were born “by the sea, planted”, there in Europe, to which we remain connected until the time of our death, by the feeling of having given our bodies to bullets in a horrible scenario of war in Africa, defending their flag, such media open the “six o’clock news”, announcing corruption problems of some governments and others, who are called at the bar of the court, accompanied by lawyers who made or contributed to the ordering of the laws that govern the country, leaving here and there “those leaks” necessary for problems to drag on until they are resolved solely and simply by their acquittal, even if only because your legal deadline has expired)!.

…é a tal democracia exagerada, (porque o sistema de democracia é bom, mas exagerado não), no seu rosto actual, que para nós, infelizmente é uma fraude e um negócio de alguns, sem solução à vista e, nas nossas longas caminhadas por aqui, tentando algum exercício físico e apreciando o que resta da natureza, por momentos sentimos uma tristeza profunda que nos perturba, porque a tal democracia exagerada, foi e é aproveitada por oportunistas engravatados, para em bem próprio, se encherem de imediato de fortunas colossais, onde o individualismo egoísta se sobrepõe aos interesses sobretudo do povo, e em especial da geração a que pertencemos!.

(…is such exaggerated democracy, (because the system of democracy is good, but not exaggerated), in its current face, which for us, unfortunately, is a fraud and a business for some, with no solution in sight, and in our long walks around here, trying some physical exercise and enjoying what is left of nature, for a moment we feel a deep sadness that disturbs us, because such exaggerated democracy was and is used by opportunists in suits, for their own good, to be immediately filled with fortunes. colossal, where selfish individualism takes precedence over the interests above all of the people, and especially of the generation to which we belong)!.

…enfim, na nossa simples e modesta opinião, a sociedade está caótica, a instabilidade é permanente e assim vai continuar por muitos anos, mesmo tal como acima já mencionámos, quando o nosso corpo apodrecer e, cremos que era certo aquele ditado do povo que dizia, “fica-te mundo, cada vez pior”, onde emerjem cavalgaduras, que chegam ao topo dizendo ser o que nunca foram e ter formação que nunca tiveram, passeando-se pelo país e estrangeiro, usando dinheiros e meios públicos para se promoverem pessoalmente!.

(…in short, in our simple and modest opinion, society is chaotic, instability is permanent and will continue for many years, even as we mentioned above, when our bodies rot and, we believe that the saying of the people that he said, “the world becomes worse and worse”, where horseback riding emerges, reaching the top claiming to be what they never were and to have training they never had, walking around the country and abroad, using money and public means to promote themselves personally)!.

…infelizmente, por mais que tentássemos, nunca fomos capazes de o fazer mas, existe um tempo em que é preciso abandonar as roupas usadas, que já têm a forma do nosso corpo (tal como a farda amarela de combatente em África) e esquecer os nossos caminhos, que nos levam sempre aos mesmos lugares, é o tal tempo da mudança e, se não ousarmos fazê-lo, teremos ficado para sempre à margem de nós mesmos!.

(…unfortunately, no matter how hard we tried, we were never able to do it, but there is a time when you have to abandon the used clothes, which already have the shape of your body (such as the yellow fighter’s uniform in Africa) and forget about the our paths, which always lead us to the same places, is such a time of change and, if we don’t dare to do it, we will have remained forever on the sidelines of ourselves)!.

…claro, o povo não é burro, pelo menos aquele da nossa geração, percebe todo o cenário que vai passando, vai sofrendo até que qualquer dia a morte o leve, (na esperança de que pelo menos coloquem o seu corpo num caixão e o respeitem e venerem, não como os companheiros combatentes que ficaram abandonados para sempre nas savanas e pântanos de África), mesmo sabendo que está a hipotecar todos os seus sentimentos de família ao ponto de ver o país que defendeu em cenário de guerra, criar dívidas que serão pagas por uma hipotética terceira ou quarta geração e, não vai às urnas de voto porque talvez entenda, entre outros motivos, que não existe uma oposição credível!. 

(…of course, the people are not stupid, at least those of our generation, they understand the whole scenario that is going on, they will suffer until any day that death takes them, (hoping that they will at least put their body in a coffin and respect and venerate him, not like fellow combatants who were abandoned forever in the savannas and swamps of Africa), even knowing that he is mortgaging all his family feelings to the point of seeing the country he defended in a scenario of war, creating debt that will be paid by a hypothetical third or fourth generation and, it does not go to the ballot boxes because perhaps it understands, among other reasons, that there is no credible opposition)!.

…e nós, deste lado do Atlântico, ficamos tristes e envergonhados com estas notícias, no entanto, sabemos e entendemos que somos “uns velhos e antiquados (veteranos de guerra), mas continuamos a viver daquilo que poupámos quando estávamos no mercado de trabalho, e claro, com a ajuda incondicional da nossa dedicada esposa e companheira por mais de cinco décadas, que vai mantendo o fogão da cozinha a funcionar pelo menos uma vez ao dia!.

(…and we, on this side of the Atlantic, are saddened and embarrassed by this news, however, we know and understand that we are “old and old-fashioned (war veterans), but we continue to live on what we saved when we were in the labor market, and of course, with the unconditional help of our dedicated wife and companion for more than five decades, we keep the kitchen stove running at least once a day)!.

…e, no fundo, no fundo, devemos considerar-nos uns previlegiados por usufruir de algumas oportunidades que esta vida nos foi dando e continuar vivos, porque infelizmente há gente que nunca teve paz ou fartura de qualquer coisa durante a sua existência!. Tiveram sim, guerra, fome e sofrimento, sem uma simples refeição diária, um ano ou dois de escola ou um hospital a pequena distância do lugar onde sobrevivem!.

(…and, deep down, we must consider ourselves privileged to enjoy some of the opportunities that this life has given us and continue to live, because unfortunately there are people who have never had peace or plenty of anything during their existence!. They did have war, hunger and suffering, without a simple daily meal, a year or two of school or a hospital a short distance from where they survive)!.
