…”viva”, a família visitou-nos!. (…”hurray”, the family visited us)!. 

…apesar de já estar-mos em Fevereiro deste novo ano, no silêncio da madrugada, acordamos com as imagens que nos ficaram do verão passado e que nos marcaram, porque recebemos de novo a maravilhosa visita da família!. 

…although it is already February of this new year, in the silence of the early morning, we woke up with the images that we have from last summer and that have left a mark on us, because we received the wonderful visit of the family again!.

…hoje sábado, para lá dos vidros da janela, o azul do tempo e do convívio durante a visita da nossa filha Sandy e da nossa neta Leila, tal como num filme, deu um pouco lugar ao cinzento, voltando a cruzarem-se sensações de alguma alegria!.

…today Saturday, beyond the window panes, the blue of the weather and the conviviality during the visit of our daughter Sandy and our granddaughter Leila, just like in a film, gave way to grey a little, and feelings of some joy once again crossed paths!.

…principalmente com as maravilhosas traquinisses e correrias da nossa neta, que percorre todos os cantos da casa descobrindo o lugar onde guardamos os seus brinquedos preferidos de outras vezes que nos visita e…, constantemente nos pede histórias que nós já lhe contámos e recontámos, incluindo as dela ou da sua mãe, de quando eram ainda mais pequenas!. 

…mainly with the wonderful mischief and running around of our granddaughter, who runs through every corner of the house discovering the place where we keep her favourite toys from other times she visits us and…, she constantly asks us for stories that we have already told and retold to her, including her own, from when she was even younger!.

…constantemente pede a comida feita pela avó e, sem qualquer dúvida que as crianças onde os avós compartilham histórias sobre a sua infância dão às crianças o conhecimento de que elas são parte de algo maior e, aquelas que conhecem mais histórias de família podem crescer com maior auto-estima e sofrer menos de depressão e ansiedade no futuro!.

…constantly asks for food made by grandmother and, without a doubt, children whose grandparents share stories about their childhood give them the knowledge that they are part of something bigger and, those who know more family stories can grow up with greater self-esteem and suffer less from depression and anxiety in the future!.

 …o mundo continua lá fora, no entanto, a vida e a juventude desta criança inocente e da nossa filha Sandy, que estão aqui tão perto, reforçam a nossa noção do mundo dos humanos, onde teremos que viver em paz e convívio constante, deixando para lá o outro mundo, onde continua a tragédia da aniquilação de gerações!.

…the world is still out there, however, the life and youth of this innocent child and our daughter Sandy, who are so close by, reinforce our notion of the human world, where we will have to live in peace and constant coexistence, leaving aside the other world, where the tragedy of the annihilation of generations continues!.

…lá na Guiné, onde permanecemos por dois longos anos!. (…there in Guinea, where we stayed for two long years)!.

…na história dos descobrimentos Portugueses que quase todos nós conhecíamos porque no ensino primário, o professor explicava-nos, havia uma parte que sempre esteve encoberta e…, só frequentando a escola em outros países se fica a conhecer!. Vamos repartir um pequeno resumo com todos, cá vai: 

…in the history of Portuguese discoveries that almost all of us knew because in primary education, the teacher explained to us, there was a part that was always covered and…, just attending school in other countries becoming known!. Let’s share a small summary with everyone, here goes: 

…a então província colonial da Guiné, apesar de geograficamente ser a mais próxima de Portugal das então colónias, sempre foi a que esteve mais longe, porque a primazia era o Brasil, depois Angola e Moçambique!. Lá na Guiné, durante os primeiros séculos de colonização os portugueses limitaram-se a fazer trocas comerciais em pequenas comunidades do litoral, situadas junto aos rios e canais que eram muito frequentes naquela região pantanosa do Golfo da Guiné!.

…the then colonial province of Guinea, although geographically being the closest to Portugal in the then colonies, has always been the one that was further, because the primacy was Brazil, then Angola and Mozambique!. There in Guinea, during the first centuries of colonization the Portuguese were limited to making trade in small coastal communities, located next to the rivers and channels that were very frequent in that swamp region of the Gulf of Guinea!.

…naquelas trocas entre os portugueses e os régulos africanos, os portugueses levavam para lá aguardente, pólvora, tabaco, quinquilharias ou outras coisas parecidas e em troca traziam o melhor que a terra dava!. E claro, com a expansão dos Europeus a caminho das Américas onde se estabeleciam com grandes plantações que requeriam muito trabalho manual, rapidamente o tráfico de escravos se tornou na principal motivação, terminando somente à volta do século dezanove por imposição de algumas potências, tanto Europeias como do resto do mundo, em que Portugal se viu forçado a renunciar ao já mencionado tráfico de escravos!

…iIn those exchanges between the Portuguese and the African rules, the Portuguese took the brandy, gunpowder, tobacco, trinkets or other similar things and in return brought the best that the earth gave!. And of course, with the expansion of Europeans on their way to the Americas where they settled with large plantations that required a lot of manual work, slave trafficking quickly became the main motivation, ending only around the nineteenth century for the imposition of some, both European powers as from the rest of the world, in which Portugal was forced to renounce the aforementioned slave trade!..

…depois, não podendo mais roubar à Guiné a sua principal riqueza que eram as pessoas, começou então a colonização, ocupando o interior do território, e para isso organizaram as “campanhas de pacificação”, que na verdade, eram campanhas levadas a cabo contra o povo guinéu que já por lá vivia com as suas leis há muitos séculos!. Assim, começaram por impor novas regras já existentes na Europa, como por exemplo a religião ou entre outras, pagar o “imposto de palhota”, onde se pretendia introduzir um modo de produção onde os guinéus tinham de produzir excedentes para poderem pagar esse imposto!. No entanto, esses excedentes depois seriam comercializados pelos colonos, e cujos lucros deveriam ser investidos no território, mas não…, os lucros eram enviados para Portugal!. Claro, tudo isto imediatamente revoltou o povo guineense…, contra as leis dos invasores!.

…then, and could no longer steal to Guinea their main wealth that were the people, then the colonization began, occupying the interior of the territory, and for that they organized the “pacification campaigns”, which were actually campaigns carried out against The Guinea people who have lived there with their laws for many centuries!. Thus, they began by imposing new rules already existing in Europe, such as religion or others, paying the “Palhota Tax”, where it was intended to introduce a mode of production where Guinea had to produce surpluses to pay this tax!. However, these surpluses would later be marketed by the settlers, and whose profits should be invested in the territory, but not…, profits were sent to Portugal!. Of course, all this immediately revolted the Guinean people…, against the laws of the invaders!.

…e quem não pagasse o tal “imposto de palhota”, (quase nenhum guinéu produzia excedentes, portanto quase nenhum pagava o imposto), era submetido a trabalho forçado, trabalho esse usado principalmente na construção de carreiros e estradas com piso em terra, desbravando aquelas selvas e pântanos, tudo feito com mão de obra forçada e só podiam ser utilizadas na época seca!. 

…and those who did not pay such a “Palhota Tax” (almost no guinea produced surpluses, so almost none paid the tax), was subjected to forced labor, which is mainly used in the construction of carclims and roads with ground floor those jungles and marshes, all made with forced labor and could only be used in dry season!. 

…como tal, nada foi investido, não foi construído nenhum hospital, escola superior ou nenhuma barragem!.  Só fortalezas para defesa e alguns edifícios foram sendo feitos para albergar os serviços coloniais, pequenos templos de religião católica, (e os guinéus não eram católicos), bem como algumas casas para os colonos em locais estratégicos onde podiam recolher madeiras ou produtos que a terra dava…, tudo isto para enviar para Portugal!.

…as such, nothing has been invested, no hospital, higher school or no dam!.  Only fortresses for defense and some buildings were being made to host colonial services, small temples of Catholic religion (and the Guinea were not Catholics), as well as some houses for the settlers in strategic locations where they could collect wood or products that the earth It was… all this to send to Portugal!.

…Denali National Park and Preserve, Alaska!.

…a cidade de Fairbanks tinha ficado para trás pelo retrovisor!. Íamos rumo ao sul, agora pela “Parks Highway” (estrada #3), com bom tempo, atravessando algumas pontes sobre rios ou riachos, apreciando um cenário de alguma montanha com longas retas e curvas suaves até ao “Denali National Park and Preserve”!.

…the city of Fairbanks had been behind the rearview mirror!. We were going to the south, now for “Parks Highway” (road #3), with a good time, crossing some bridges on rivers or streams, enjoying a scenario of some mountain with long straight and soft curves to the “Denali National Park and Preserve”!.

…aqui, já em expedições anteriores tínhamos conduzido a nossa “White Fox” (caravana) até onde era autorizado no Parque Denali!. Isto era uma coisa, no entanto viajar para dentro do parque, era outra!. Porquê?. Porque a estrada que nos leva ao Parque Denali é uma das estradas mais bonitas onde provavelmente já viajamos!. Ela mergulha em algumas milhas na natureza selvagem do Alaska e…, ao conseguirmos chegar cada vez mais perto do Grande Denali, ou Monte McKinley,se preferirem, a montanha mais alta dos USA, é quase certo que vamos ter alguns encontros inesquecíveis com a vida selvagem ao longo deste caminho!. 

…here, in previous expeditions we had led our “White Fox” (caravan), as far as it was authorized in Denali Park!. This was one thing, however, traveling into the park, it was another!. Why?. Why the road that takes us to Denali Park is one of the most beautiful roads where we probably already travel!. She plunges into a few miles in the wild of Alaska and…, as we get closer and closer to Greater Denali, or Monte McKinley, if you prefer, the highest mountain of the USA, it is almost certain that we will have some unforgettable meetings with life Wild along this path!.

…então porque razão não o podemos fazer na nossa “White Fox” (caravana)?. Simplesmente porque não nos é permitido!. Após as primeiras 18 ou 20 milhas, a circulação de veículos particulares é restrita!. Para além do Savage River, ou seja, para lá da pequena ponte que o atravessa, aproximadamente na milha 15 ou 16, a estrada é de terra e cascalho, e apenas camionetas aprovadas pelo parque são permitidas!.

…so why can’t we do it in our “White Fox” (caravan)?. Simply because it is not allowed!. After the first 18 or 20 miles, the circulation of private vehicles is restricted!. In addition to the Savage River, that is, beyond the small bridge that crosses it, approximately in mile 15 or 16, the road is of land and gravel, and only van approved by the park are allowed!.

…como tal, vindos do norte e chegamos ao Centro de Visitas do Parque e prontos para o explorar, informaram-nos que para isso era necessário pagar pela viajem, que seria feita em camionetas do parque!. Apesar de na nossa já um pouco avançada idade todos os centavos contam, no entanto, comprámos os bilhetes com todos aqueles descontos permitidos pela idade e…, lá fomos pela estrada que começa ganhando alguma elevação depois de deixar o Centro de Visitas, mergulhando instantaneamente nas profundezas da natureza!. 

…as such, coming from the north and we arrived at the Park Visit Center and ready to explore it, informed us that it was necessary to pay for the trip, which would be made in park!. Although in our already a little advanced age all cents count, however, we bought the tickets with all those discounts allowed by age and…, we went through the road that starts gaining some elevation after leaving the center of visits, diving instantly in depths of nature!.

…e era verdade!. Durante as quase cinco horas de viajem, percorremos parte dos mais de seis milhões de acres de terras selvagens, da montanha mais alta da América do Norte, com cerca de 20.310 pés, cortada ao meio apenas por uma única estrada de terra e cascalho, com mais de 100 milhas de extensão!. Parando aqui e ali, com explicações do condutor/guia, umas vezes dando prioridade aos animais para atravessar a estrada outras atravessando áreas de precipícios ou cruzando pequenos riachos, percorremos vales, montanhas grandes com neve, outras mais pequenas com lindos cenários e ovelhas Dali pastando!. Vimos ursos pardos e negros, lobos, caribus e alces, bem como águias douradas e carecas, e muitas outras formas de vida selvagem, incluindo as já mencionadas ovelhas Dali!. Valeu a pena!.

…and it was true!. During the nearly five hours of travel, we traveled part of the more than six million in the savage lands, from the highest mountain in North America, with about 20,310 feet, cut in half by a single dirt and gravel road, with More than 100 miles of extension!. Stopping here and there, with explanations of the driver/guide, sometimes giving priority to the animals to cross the road other crossing areas or crossing small streams, we travel valleys, large mountains with snow, others smaller with beautiful scenarios and sheep grazing ! We saw brown and black bears, wolves, caribus and alces, as well as gold eagles and bald eagles, and many other wildlife forms, including the aforementioned sheep there!. It was worth it!.

…estamos no ano de 2025!. (…it is the year 2025)!

…estamos no ano de 2025 e…, se vocês estão sentindo o impacto da inflação dos últimos anos, podem crer que não estão sozinhos!. Principalmente os idosos, tal como nós, também temos sentido e muito esse impacto!.

…it is the year 2025 and…, if you are feeling the impact of inflation in recent years, you can believe that you are not alone!. Especially the elderly, just like us, have also felt this impact a lot!. 

…presentemente, não importa em que parte do mundo se vive, a causa que esta mega-inflação tem nas nossas vidas cremos que se iniciou nas interrupções da cadeia de suprimentos causadas pela pandemia, que tornaram mais difícil e mais caro obter produtos nas prateleiras dos super-mercados, tal como o aumento dos custos de produção, desde matérias-primas até à mão-de-obra, e claro…, quem paga é o consumidor!.

…currently, no matter where in the world you live, the cause of this mega-inflation in our lives we believe began with the interruptions in the supply chain caused by the pandemic, which made it more difficult and more expensive to get products on supermarket shelves, as well as the increase in production costs, from raw materials to labor, and of course…, the consumer is the one who pays! 

…é uma situação frustrante, mas entender as razões por trás destes aumentos de preços, a nós, e repetimos já idosos, que normalmente vivemos do que amealhámos enquanto estávamos no mercado de trabalho e duma reforma onde o governo nunca acompanhou esta inflação constante, não nos pode ajudar a navegar nestes tempos desafiadores!.

…it is a frustrating situation, but understanding the reasons behind these price increases, for us, and we repeat, already elderly, who normally live off what we saved while we were in the job market and from a pension where the government never kept up with this constant inflation, cannot help us navigate these challenging times! 

…felizmente, temos moradia e o fogão na cozinha ainda vai trabalhando pelo menos uma vez ao dia, mas milhares ou mesmo milhões de pessoas em todo o mundo nada disto têm!. E cada dia que passa a inflação aumenta!. Por exemplo, no ano de  1989, o preço médio de uma casa por aqui onde presentemente vivemos era de US $46.000, hoje, são mais de $420.000, uma dúzia de ovos eram $0.78, hoje, são mais de $6.85!. 

…fortunately, we have housing and the stove in the kitchen still works at least once a day, but thousands or even millions of people around the world have none of this!. And every day that passes, inflation increases!. For example, in 1989, the average price of a house here where we currently live was US $46,000, today, it is more than $420,000, a dozen eggs were $0.78, today, it is more than $6.85!.

…sim, também sabemos que o salário de um trabalhador era menor, mas a diferença não era assim tão grande e…, quer isto dizer que existiu uma tempestade perfeita de fatores e o custo de vida aumentou e continua a aumentar todos os dias na maioria dos lugares nos últimos anos, tornando cada vez mais difícil para muitas pessoas pagarem uma casa ou a sua renda, tal como os bens de primeira necessidade, tornando a normal vida numa questão complexa e desafiadora que requer muita atenção e…, para nós pessoas idosas, cremos mesmo que qualquer mudança…, já vêm tarde!.

…yes, we also know that the salary of a worker was lower, but the difference was not that great and…, this means that there was a perfect storm of factors and the cost of living has increased and continues to increase every day in most places in recent years, making it increasingly difficult for many people to pay for a house or their rent, as well as basic necessities, making normal life a complex and challenging matter that requires a lot of attention and…, for us elderly people, we really believe that any change…, is already too late!. 

…e terminamos dizendo que o momento que hoje se vive, é uma questão complexa que requer uma abordagem cuidadosa, porque o preço da energia, particularmente petróleo, gás e electricidade, têm uma influência maciça na economia, e claro, faz aumentar o custo dos bens essenciais para se viver, e quando os custos da energia aumentam, de imediato contribui para o aumento de todos preços em geral!.

…and we end by saying that the current situation is a complex issue that requires a careful approach, because the price of energy, particularly oil, gas and electricity, has a massive influence on the economy, and of course, increases the cost of essential goods for living, and when energy costs increase, it immediately contributes to the increase of all prices in general!

…”WOW”, a nossa dedicada esposa Isaura, foi fazer as compras da semana ao super-mercado local e chegou mesmo agora e disse: “venho “perdida”, vê lá tu que uma dúzia de ovos custou $7.65”!. (o preço já subiu outra vez).

…”WOW”, our devoted wife Isaura, went to do the weekly shopping at the local supermarket and just arrived and said: “I’m “lost”, just look, a dozen eggs cost $7.65”!. (the price has already gone up again).
