…pela manhã, o tempo era de chuva miudinha com algumas abertas e…, o frio ia desaparecendo de acordo como nos íamos aproximando do paralelo 48º, ou seja, do sul!. Como tal, viajando mais uma vez na hoje famosa e “Histórica Alaska Highway”, agora no sentido leste, ou seja, em direção à cidade de Dawson Creek, na província de British Columbia!. Íamos também contando as milhas no contador da nossa “White Fox” (caravana)!.
…in the morning, the weather was light rain with some rain and…, the cold disappeared as we approached the 48th parallel, that is, from the south!. …as milhas e milhas ia passando e…, o tempo ia melhorando!. Já havia algum sol e algumas nuvens brancas, mesmo raras, que tentavam encobrir um adorável céu azul!. Continuávamos a bendizer a sorte, porque o cenário era magnífico para fotos!. Como tal fomos fotografando as montanhas junto do Lago Kluane!.
…the miles and miles went by and…, the weather got better!. There was already some sun and some white clouds, even rare, that tried to cover up a lovely blue sky!. …nós veteranos, consideramo-nos uns privilegiados porque já tivemos a felicidade de fazer esta viajem e…, estrategicamente ou não, depois de por simples acaso ter parado para pernoitar num parque de RV na cidade de Fruita, no estado do Colorado!.

…e claro, estando na área, aproveitámos a oportunidade para subir a montanha e visitar o Parque do Monumento Nacional do Colorado, que foi estabelecido pela primeira vez no ano de 1911 e apresenta desfiladeiros com paredes íngremes e formações rochosas únicas!.

Um rebanho de bisões foi introduzido e mantido de 1925 a 1983, depois de uma tentativa fracassada de introduzir alces, no entanto, o rebanho cresceu para até 45 animais, mas geralmente o rebanho era mantido em cerca de 20-25 animais, numa área de 20.500 acres (32 milhas quadradas) que agora é o Monumento Nacional do Colorado que abrange seis desfiladeiros, cada um com falésias distintas e monólitos de arenito!.
…a curiosity!. A herd of bison was introduced and maintained from 1925 to 1983, after a failed attempt to introduce elk, however, the herd grew to up to 45 animals, but generally the herd was maintained at around 20-25 animals, in a 20,500-acre (32 square mile) area that is now the Colorado National Monument encompassing six canyons, each with distinctive cliffs and monoliths of sandstone!.

Este projecto de túneis apresenta uma parede lateral curva, incomum em túneis nos USA, onde a maioria dos túneis apresenta um tecto curvo e paredes laterais planas!. Os engenheiros pegaram emprestado um projeto europeu para dar maior resistência ao túnel!.
…we were also passing through several tunnels, built to trace the road through the Rocky Mountains!. This tunnel design features a curved sidewall, unusual in tunnels in the USA, where most tunnels feature a curved roof and flat sidewalls!. …existe mesmo uma seção de aproximadamente 19 km de estrada que apresenta o Túnel Sem Nome, o Túnel do Lago Suspenso, o Túnel de Curva Reversa, 40 pontes e viadutos e quilómetros de muros de contenção!.

…as we continued east, climbing into the Rocky Mountains, we passed major ski towns like Vail, Avon or Frisco, where the road crosses the Continental Divide through the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel, which, at over 11,000 feet in elevation, and as we previously mentioned, is one of the highest vehicle tunnels in the world!.

…we stopped to stock up on gasoline, water and biscuits, in the city of Georgetown, where we were told that there is still one of the most picturesque train journeys in the country, on a narrow gauge railway and that it was one of the first tourist attractions in the state, traveling between Georgetown and the old silver mining camp of Silver Plume!.

…abreviando tudo isto num pequeno resumo, a estrada, em algumas áreas tem faixas mais baixas, passa lá no fundo, entre montanhas, junto da linha do caminho de ferro e do rio, alternando-se, em outras zonas, em que passa o rio em baixo, o caminho de ferro e a estrada por cima, ou ainda em outras áreas onde tudo segue lado a lado, com pequenas subidas ou descidas que logo se transformam em zonas planas, pelo menos quando se entra nos vários túneis que nos vão aparecendo!.

…and finally, as it descends from the mountains, this road enters the Denver metropolitan area, serving as an important urban route through downtown Denver, providing connections with other important routes!. Then, it crosses the “High Plains”, passing through agricultural communities, where the landscape becomes flatter and the road becomes more linear and less mountainous!
…com algum cuidado e vindos do norte, viajando na nossa “White Fox” (caravana), pela estrada que atravessa o desfiladeiro de Zion, e que tem quase 10 km de comprimento, terminando no templo de Sinawava, que recebeu o nome do Deus Coiote dos índios Paiute, íamos admirando este maravilhoso parque, pois a elevação associada à criação do planalto do Colorado, elevou esta região para aproximadamente 10.000 pés (3.000 m), a partir de 13 milhões de anos atrás!.

…reparada, fez-se de novo ao mar e um tempo depois, atracou numa das Marianas, onde três homens desertaram!. Depois rumou para nordeste na tentativa de chegar aos ventos de oeste, mas não os encontrou, provavelmente por causa das monções de verão e…, entretanto o “escorbuto” (doença mortal) instalou-se a bordo matando 30 homens e deixando apenas 17 para navegar no navio e…, finalmente chegou às Molucas!.

…porque é impossível esquecer situações num cenário de combate, onde a lama dos rios e pântanos lá na Guiné eram constantes, onde as condições para se tentar recuperar um qualquer morto ou ferido eram quase impossíveis, pois as vítimas, deviam ser puxados para algum tipo de posição onde houvesse alguma segurança e…, levar um homem ferido ou morto, requer até quatro homens como portadores, o que logo enfraquecia uma unidade militar num momento crítico, portanto, esses infelizes militares quando eram atingidos, alguns deles, por lá ficaram para sempre!.

…e também porque muitas vezes, as tropas Portuguesas encontravam-se na pior posição para avançar e identificar com precisão a sua localização no terreno, onde ou existia selva cerrada, pântanos ou canais, com água, lama e tarrafo, algumas vezes até animais perigosos, como por exemplo giboias ou crocodilos, onde em algumas situações o inimigo, tirando alguma vantagem, surgia de todos os lados, atacando, disparando, sem dar qualquer oportunidade para que se recuperasse os nossos mortos ou feridos!.

Lembramo-nos de como a vida se tornava de alguma forma menor, à medida que nos isolávamos sistematicamente, daqueles que nós amávamos e deixávamos em Portugal!.

…nesta já avançada idade, tornou-se claro que o custo de uma guerra é ainda maior do que nós possamos imaginar, porque a guerra tem um apetite insaciável pela morte, e infelizmente, ainda hoje continua a matar pessoas, continua a fazer vítimas, não só em quem participou activamente na mesma, pois as pessoas começam com sentimentos de confusão, depois move-as um longo pensamento de raiva e, finalmente vem a indiferença, mas aquele esgotamento escuro e emocional ainda se encontra de pé, mesmo à beira de um abismo, convidando-nos a saltar, pensando que com essa estúpida atitude, todos os sentimentos vão acabar, mas infelizmente não, cada vez estão mais presentes!.

…ainda hoje não sabemos e talvez nunca saberemos porque a idade já vai longa, quem foram os verdadeiros heróis, se foram os que por lá ficaram enterrados em valas comuns junto do nosso “posto avançado” naquela selva pantanosa, ou aqueles que eram apelidados de activistas e vistos como simpatizantes antipatrióticos e…, ainda em Portugal diziam: “claro que não, não iremos para a Guerra Colonial em África, vamos fugir para França”, o que era muito vulgar naquela época!.

Porque a emoção toma conta de nós, é mais forte, o som do “catra-pum-pum-pum”, começa a zumbir nos nossos ouvidos, parece que vamos a fugir para o nosso abrigo preferido!.

Morreu crivado de balas daquela perigosa arma a que nós chamávamos “costureirinha”, que era uma arma metralhadora, que o inimigo usava em cima de um tripé com duas rodas em ferro, que a ajudava a transportar para a zona de combate e normalmente era usada em emboscadas onde havia capim, fazendo fogo muito rasteiro, com cadência de tiro e som que a identificava e…, quase sempre no fim da emboscada os guerrilheiros, talvez desesperados, às vezes abandonavam-na, ou pelo menos abandonavam o tripé, preocupando-se com os seus feridos!.

…dias depois de tudo isto acontecer, o “Zargo”, explicou-nos alguns pormenores da morte do “Zé Pesca”, onde estavam já a algumas horas, esperando, numa “operação de destruição de um acampamento inimigo”, cobertos com a típica capa camuflada impermeável, (já com muitos buracos), portanto molhados “até aos ossos”, por uma chuva miudinha e…, já era noite quando sairam do “posto avançado” onde também nós estávamos acantonados!.

…todos tinham bebido muito café, não sabiam se estavam sobre influência, mas estavam nervosos e queriam acção!. Passou um grupo de guerrilheiros perto, onde não deviam intervir, pois em caso de fogo toda a operação que estava a ser desenvolvida, seria denunciada!. O “Zé Pesca” já aí queria intervir, todavia, os companheiros seguraram-no!. Foram avançando e já próximo do objectivo, ele, o “Zé Pesca”, não esperou por nada, avançou quase sozinho na frente, gritando, disparando, talvez amaldiçoando a sua própria alma, onde os companheiros surpresos, ouviram a tal “costureirinha”, fazendo suar o seu maldito som, do “catra-pum-pum-pum-pum”, que crivou o “Zé Pesca”, fazendo o seu corpo, rodopiar em zig-zague, caindo uns metros à frente, encolhido, crivado de balas!.

…a operação continuou!. Capturaram algum material de guerra e o pequeno acampamento inimigo foi destruído!. No regresso, transportando o corpo do “Zé Pesca”, trazendo também algumas mulheres guerrilheiras transportadoras de material de guerra, que depois de feitas prisioneiras acompanharam os militares, por uma certa distância, para serviam de escudo e compreendia-se, pois enquanto acompanhassem os militares, os guerrilheiros não atacavam e, já a manhã ia alta, perto do local onde deviam ser recolhidos, as libertaram!.

São entre outras…,, as distâncias entre as localidades ou as tempestades de chuva e vento, principalmente quando nos aproximamos do sul, ou seja, do Golfo do México!. É uma viagem panorâmica semelhante a uma viagem no tempo, que serpenteia por pitorescas aldeias ou vilas repletas de prédios e casas históricas, onde na “Main Street”, (rua principal), está lá tudo, desde a farmácia, banco, quartel dos bombeiros ou da policia, estação de gasolina ou a loja de supermercado!.

…até às grandes metrópoles, como por exemplo as cidades de Dallas ou Houston, onde se gastam horas e muita paciência para as atravessar, pois o tráfico é intenso, existem os camiões de longo curso, algumas luzes de control que se têm que respeitar e…, todos querem ser os primeiros a de lá sair, gerando aquela “barafunda”, quando os condutores começam por dizer: “que tráfico mais caótico”!. Enfim, tudo isto nos aconteceu mas…, sobrevivemos!.

…pernoitámos aqui, no meio desta área do quase selvagem “Parque Estadual Dead Horse Point”, onde as preocupações de segurança incluem o isolamento relativo do parque!. Por exemplo: gás, alimentos e assistência médica está a mais de 30 milhas de distância, lá em baixo na cidade de Moab, sem mencionar o perigo de raios, chuva, ventos fortes ou as falésias não vedadas!.
…we stayed the night here, in the middle of this almost wild area “Dead Horse Point State Park”, where safety concerns include the relative isolation of the park!. For example: gas, food and medical care is over 30 miles away, down in the town of Moab, not to mention the danger from lightning, rain, high winds or the unsealed cliffs!
…mas todas estas pequenas grandes coisas…, fazem parte da nossa aventura e, se nos sentarmos em uma qualquer rocha, daquelas que por aqui existem, podemos ver o cenário de uma península de rochas no alto de falésias de arenito, conectadas ao planalto por uma estreita faixa de terra a que chamam garganta ou pescoço…, se assim o entenderem!.
…but all these little big things… are part of our adventure and, if we sit on any rock, one of those that exist around here, we can see the scenery of a peninsula of rocks on top of sandstone cliffs, connected to the plateau by a narrow strip of land that they call a throat or neck…, if you will!.
…wow, que maravilha!. Era manhã, e o sol aparecia de um lado diferente do de ontem que era da parte da tarde quando aqui chegámos!. Como tal, e devido à visão geral e dramática deste maravilhoso parque, torna-se um local muito popular para tirar fotografias!.

…é um cenário que espera para ser descoberto, como por exemplo no local “Big Chief Overlook”, que está localizado num topo muito inclinado do parque, mas é um local óptimo, de onde se obtém incríveis vistas panorâmicas dos dois lados do parque!. Não nos surpreende que esta área foi usada na cena do Grand Canyon no final do filme de 1991, Thelma & Louise!.
…it’s a scenery waiting to be discovered, for example at the “Big Chief Overlook” site, which is located on a very steep top of the park, but it’s a great spot, from where you can get incredible panoramic views of both sides of the park!. …era meia manhã quando começámos a descer a montanha em direção à cidade de Moab, para nos abastecer de gasolina e alguns alimentos e…, sempre que viajamos pelo oeste, é quase obrigatório usarmos a estrada #128, que é uma estrada estadual de aproximadamente 45 milhas, onde toda a extensão da estrada foi designada como Scenic Byway no Alto Colorado River, como parte do programa Utah Scenic Byways!. Esta estrada também faz parte da Estrada Pré-Histórica de Diamantes de Dinossauros, como uma Via Nacional Panorâmica!.

…hoje é quase usada como um passeio panorâmico e os residentes da região de Moab frequentemente se referem a esta estrada como “a estrada do rio”, porque o rio Colorado, segue a seu lado em quase toda a sua extensão, que começa ao norte de Moab, através de um desfiladeiro estreito e íngreme, descrito como espetacular pela National Geographic, cujas paredes de arenito são recomendadas pela sua beleza em guias de viagens!.

…at the eastern end of the valley, the Colorado River and this wonderful road form the southern border of Arches National Park, but there is no access to the park, however there are trails along the road and other popular attractions that include Canyons and Arches or a beautiful view of the Fisher Towers, which are a set of dark red pinnacles, which become an attraction for photography lovers, like us!.
…depois deste lindo cenário do rio Colorado e das suas margens, e querendo continuar a seguir este rio, olhámos para trás pelo retrovisor, entrando na auto-estrada I-70, viajando no sentido leste!.

…chegámos de novo ao estado do Colorado e…, viajando por esta auto-estrada, o cenário e constante!. Tem longas retas e curvas suaves com monumentos históricos, grandes zonas rochosas, pequenas montanhas e alguns túneis!.

…até que tem mesmo que passar por entre altas montanhas onde passa, o rio Colorado, o caminho de ferro e…, esta estrada que vai ao lado do rio, começa a desviar-se por cima do rio, ao lado do caminho de ferro, ao lado, por baixo ou por cima da outra via da estrada que vem do leste, entra num túnel e sai por cima do rio e…, aqui e ali ainda tem desvios para zonas descanso, porque também existem cheias ou acidentes!. Que maravilhosa “barafunda”!.

…tudo isto é na área quando serpenteia pelo Glenwood Canyon, onde se concluiu um dos projetos rodoviários mais extraordinários já construídos nos USA, que é uma rede de viadutos, pontes e túneis de aproximadamente 12,5 milhas de comprimento construída através de um desfiladeiro extraordinariamente estreito e ambientalmente sensível no oeste do Colorado, que marcou um marco na história do transporte desta nação!.
…all of this is in the area as it winds through Glenwood Canyon, where one of the most extraordinary highway projects ever built in the USA was completed, which is a network of viaducts, bridges and tunnels approximately 12.5 miles long built through an extraordinary canyon narrow and environmentally sensitive site in western Colorado that marked a milestone in this nation’s transportation history!.
…fomos ver a história desta maravilhosa “barafunda” e…, para a sua realização tiveram que construir duas estradas, uma quase em cima da outra, incluindo 40 pontes e viadutos que se estendiam por mais de 6 milhas entre seções da estrada!. A estrada tem 15 milhas de muros de contenção e um túnel de 4.000 pés de comprimento com furos para o tráfego em ambos os sentidos!. Os muros de contenção são fixados com tirantes ancorados e âncoras de solo, e a rodovia é pavimentada com lajes de pavimento pós-tensionadas moldadas no local, em balanço de 6 pés para além dos muros de contenção!.
…we went to see the history of this wonderful “mess” and…, to make it happen they had to build two roads, one almost on top of the other, including 40 bridges and viaducts that stretched for more than 6 miles between sections of the road!. The road has 15 miles of retaining walls and a 4,000 foot long tunnel with holes for traffic in both directions! The retaining walls are secured with anchored ties and ground anchors, and the highway is paved with cast-in-place post-tensioned pavement slabs, cantilevered 6 feet beyond the retaining walls!.

…já vamos longe na escrita!. Resumindo um pouco, continuámos viajando no sentido leste, atravessando mais uma vez a cidade de Denver, e pernoitando num parque de RV, na pequena cidade de Limon, ainda no estado do Colorado!.
…we’re already a long way in writing! To summarize a little, we continued traveling east, crossing the city of Denver once again, and spending the night in an RV park, in the small town of Limon, still in the state of Colorado!.
…o relógio da nossa “White Fox” (caravana), marcava 7 horas e 34 minutos da manhã quando abandonámos a pequena cidade de Valdez rumo ao norte!. Eventualmente, a luz do sol desapareceu e as montanhas pararam de brilhar com as suas cores brilhantes e…, para tornar a viagem com um pouco mais de aventura, aquele céu que no dia anterior estava simplesmente mágico desapareceu, e o tempo chuvoso chegou!.
…the clock of our “White Fox” (caravan), showed 7 hours and 34 minutes in the morning when we left the small city of Valdez heading north!. Eventually, the sunlight disappeared and the mountains stopped shining with their brilliant colors and…, to make the trip a little more adventurous, that sky that was simply magical the day before disappeared, and the rainy weather arrived!.
…no entanto, mesmo com o céu a desintegrar-se, havia que prosseguir rumo ao norte, pelo menos até à cidade de Fairbanks!. Escolhemos a rota do Oleoduto Trans-Alaska que quase nos acompanhou a cada subida, descida ou curva da estrada, revelando-nos a imensidão da paisagem, nas encostas, os abetos escuros retorcendo-se no meio de alguns álamos verdes aqui e ali, mostrando vestígios de incêndios ou secas de verão!.
…however, even with the sky disintegrating, we had to continue heading north, at least to the city of Fairbanks!. We chose the route of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, which almost followed us at every climb, descent or bend in the road, revealing to us the immensity of the landscape, on the hillsides, the dark fir trees twisting amidst a few green aspen trees here and there, showing traces of fires or summer droughts!.
…era um pouco da “Tundra do Ártico”, no verdadeiro interior do Alaska, num local a norte deste “calhau” a que chamam planeta Terra, mas é um lugar fascinante e, antes de começar esta longa jornada, não conseguíamos evitar a sensação de que íamos deixar algo que talvez nunca mais iríamos ver, porque experimentar o ártico no seu pico de vida, compreendemos totalmente a sua beleza, mas ao mesmo tempo a sua fragilidade!.
…it was a bit of the “Arctic Tundra”, in the true interior of Alaska, in a place north of this “pebble” that they call planet Earth, but it is a fascinating place and, before starting this long journey, we couldn’t avoid the feeling that we were leaving something that we would perhaps never see again, because experiencing the Arctic at its peak of life, we fully understood its beauty, but at the same time its fragility!.
…chovia com algumas abertas!. Prosseguíamos lentamente, pois a visibilidade era deficiente e a estrada apresentava alguns buracos, até que eventualmente as árvores iam desaparecendo, deixando uma paisagem pintada por plantas, rochas e neve que se estendiam por todo o lado, onde há muitas dezenas de anos atrás, alguns pioneiros na preservação da natureza, exploraram as partes desta cordilheira montanhosa, indo a pé, de barco ou de trenó!.
…it was raining with some open!. We proceeded slowly, as visibility was poor and the road had some holes, until eventually the trees disappeared, leaving a landscape painted by plants, rocks and snow that spread everywhere, where many decades ago, some Pioneers in nature preservation, they explored parts of this mountain range, going on foot, by boat or by sled!.
…é uma estrada acidentada e os serviços são extremamente limitados, mas nós sabíamos ao viajar por aqui, que tínhamos que ser auto-suficientes e bem preparados, porque para aqueles que são atraídos por espaços vazios e exóticos tal como nós, esta rota oferece-nos uma oportunidade incomparável de descobrir um pedaço de deserto ártico e alguma vida selvagem que por aqui existe!.
…it is a bumpy road and services are extremely limited, but we knew when traveling here that we had to be self-sufficient and well prepared, because for those who are attracted to empty and exotic spaces like us, this route offers- We have an incomparable opportunity to discover a piece of Arctic desert and some of the wildlife that exists here!.
…íamos parando aqui e ali, passando pelo Lago Paxson, quase coberto de gelo, perto da pequena cidade com o mesmo nome, onde nos dizem que ainda vivem cerca de uma dúzia de residentes e com algumas cabanas propriedade de pessoas de Fairbanks, que fica lá no norte, ou de outras partes do Alaska!. Entre os residentes durante todo o ano estão os condutores de cães, onde se podem ver e ouvir os canis cheios de cães de trenó, quando por lá parámos!.
…we stopped here and there, passing Lake Paxson, almost covered in ice, near the small town of the same name, where we are told that about a dozen residents still live and with a few cabins owned by people from Fairbanks, which is up north, or from other parts of Alaska! Among the year-round residents are dog drivers, where you can see and hear the kennels full of sled dogs when we stopped there!.
…todo este cenário está no coração do Alaska, onde as florestas estão repletas de vida selvagem, desde o formidável urso pardo a grandes manadas de caribu, tal como vistas espetaculares de paisagens montanhosas, um pouco encobertas pela chuva miudinha que estava caindo nesse momento!. Todo este Interior do Alaska, foi o lar original dos povos atabascanos, mineiros de ouro, agricultores e caçadores de peles que descobriram as riquezas desta região!.
…this entire scenario is in the heart of Alaska, where the forests are full of wildlife, from the formidable grizzly bear to large herds of caribou, as well as spectacular views of mountainous landscapes, somewhat obscured by the light rain that was falling at the time!. This entire Interior of Alaska was the original home of the Athabascan people, gold miners, farmers and fur hunters who discovered the riches of this region!.
…algum tempo depois surge-nos o Lago Summit, também quase coberto de gelo, localizado acima da linha das árvores na encosta sul da Cordilheira do Alaska, a uma altitude de 3.300 pés, alimentado por glaciares que vão derretendo e por vários riachos!. Dizem-nos que este maravilhoso lago tem até 91 m de profundidade e está coberto de gelo até 1,5 m de espessura desde Novembro até meados de Junho!.
…some time later Summit Lake appears, also almost covered in ice, located above the tree line on the southern slope of the Alaska Range, at an altitude of 3,300 feet, fed by melting glaciers and several streams!. We are told that this wonderful lake is up to 91 m deep and is covered in ice up to 1.5 m thick from November until mid-June!.
…esta área é conhecida pela corrida anual de esqui e máquinas de neve “Arctic Man Summit Lake Classic”, com a participação de muitos visitantes todos os meses de abril, se o tempo o permitir!. Foi para nós muito gratificante esta passagem pelas montanhas do interior do Alaska!. Valeu a pena!.
…this area is known for the annual “Arctic Man Summit Lake Classic” ski and snow machine race, attended by many visitors every April, weather permitting!. This trip through the mountains of the interior of Alaska was very rewarding for us!. Worth it!.
…até que descendo, descendo, chegámos à pequena cidade de Delta Junction, onde as placas de sinalização nos dizem que chegámos ao fim do “Histórico Alaska Highway”, e que está localizada a uma curta distância ao sul da confluência do rio Delta com o rio Tanana!. Andámos por lá e tirámos fotografias, no entanto o Marco Histórico que assiná-la o fim da famosa estrada foi removido para reparação!. No lado sul está o parque da “Sullivan Roadhouse”, onde admirámos entre outras coisas os diversos veículos antigos, que foram utilizados na construção desta hoje famosa estrada!. Também visitámos o Centro de Visitas recebendo valiosa informação!.
…until down, down, we reached the small town of Delta Junction, where the signposts tell us we have reached the end of the “Historic Alaska Highway”, and which is located a short distance south of the confluence of the Delta River with the Tanana River!. We walked around and took photographs, however the Historical Marker that marked the end of the famous road was removed for repairs! On the south side is the “Sullivan Roadhouse” park, where we admired, among other things, the various old vehicles that were used in the construction of this now famous road!. We also visited the Visitor Center and received valuable information!
…e a nossa aventura rumo ao norte continuava, porque a luz do dia podia prolongar-se até 22 horas ou mais, como tal parámos na pequena cidade de North Pole,percorrendo a rua principal e entrámos no estabelecimento de vendas do Pai Natal, que é a encarnação moderna de um posto comercial!. É uma paragem agradável para quem viaja na Estrada Richardson em direcção ao norte que olhando à sua esquerda, vê uma figura gigante do Pai Natal!.
…and our adventure heading north continued, because daylight could last up to 10 pm or more, so we stopped in the small town of North Pole, walked along the main street and entered Santa Claus’s sales establishment, which It is the modern incarnation of a trading post! It is a pleasant stop for those traveling on the Richardson Road heading north who, looking to their left, see a giant figure of Santa Claus!.
…sempre rumo ao norte, finalmente chegámos à cidade de Fairbanks!. Aqui, ainda com luz do dia, seguimos em direção a Fox, uma pequena povoação ao norte, onde existe um parque chamado “The Trans Alaska Oil Pipeline”, onde podemos caminhar até ao Pipeline, admirar a sua dimensão, ver partes do seu actual funcionamento, tocá-lo, ler informação, e tirar fotografias!.
…always heading north, we finally arrived in the city of Fairbanks!. Here, still with daylight, we head towards Fox, a small town to the north, where there is a park called “The Trans Alaska Oil Pipeline”, where we can walk to the Pipeline, admire its size, see parts of its current operation, touch it, read information, and take photos!.
…e um pouco ainda mais para norte, havia o famoso “Turtle Club Restaurante”, que também visitámos, e não é necessário ler o “cardápio”, é só olhar para a mesa ao lado e dizer:“quero um igual àquele”, onde nos serviram o maior bife de búfalo que jamais tínhamos visto!. Finalmente regressámos à cidade de Fairbanks onde pernoitámos num parque de RV, onde já tínhamos estado em anos anteriores!.
…and a little further north, there was the famous “Turtle Club Restaurant”, which we also visited, and it is not necessary to read the “menu”, just look at the table next to it and say: “I want one like that”, where we were served the biggest buffalo steak we had ever seen!. Finally we returned to the city of Fairbanks where we spent the night in an RV park, where we had been in previous years!.

…por outras atravessando planícies e pequenas vilas e aldeias, com troços em reparação e control de velocidade quando pelas ditas vilas e aldeias passávamos!.

…e, finalmente chegámos ao local desejado para percorrer e admirar, que dá pelo nome de “Going-to-the-Sun Road”, que é uma estrada pitoresca de montanha nas Montanhas Rochosas, e é a única estrada que atravessa o Parque Glacier em Montana, cruzando a Continental Divide através de Logan Pass a uma altitude de 6.646 pés!.
…and finally we arrived at the desired place to travel and admire, which is called “Going-to-the-Sun Road”, which is a picturesque mountain road in the Rocky Mountains, and is the only road that crosses Glacier Park in Montana, crossing the Continental Divide through Logan Pass at an elevation of 6,646 feet!.
… na sua entrada, a guarda florestal, depois de nos identificar-mos como viajantes do mundo, amavelmente nos disse que a estrada está fechada para reparação das avalanches mas…, nos deixava percorrer uma distância à volta de 30 a 35 milhas, claro, tudo com nossa responsabilidade!. Agradecendo-lhe…, foi o que fizemos!.
…at the entrance, the ranger, after identifying ourselves as world travelers, kindly told us that the road is closed for avalanche repairs but…, allowed us to travel a distance of around 30 to 35 miles, of course , all under our responsibility! Thanking you…, that’s what we did!
…esta maravilhosa estrada, originalmente construída para promover o turismo e encorajar as pessoas a visitar os parques nacionais da América, tem alcançado o seu objetivo desde sua conclusão no ano de 1932, com uma artéria de aproximadamente 60 milhas que atravessa o “Parque Nacional Glacier de Montana”, atravessando as Montanhas Rochosas e sobre o Continental Divide em Logan Pass!.
…this wonderful road, originally built to promote tourism and encourage people to visit America’s national parks, has achieved its purpose since its completion in 1932, with an approximately 60-mile artery running through “Glacier National Park” of Montana”, across the Rocky Mountains and over the Continental Divide at Logan Pass!.
…recomendam-nos para nos certificar de tomar cuidado com curvas cegas e quedas dramáticas, e evitar passar nela nos meses de inverno, (nós estávamos em MAIO-FLORES), quando os bancos de neve podem chegar a 80 pés de profundidade!. A estrada eleva-se a uma altitude de 6.646 pés, com vistas amplas, cabras de montanha pastando e coberta de prados de flores silvestres em tons de arco-íris!. Valeu a pena!.
…we are advised to be sure to watch out for blind curves and dramatic drops, and to avoid going through them in the winter months, (we were in MAY-FLOWERS) when the snowbanks can be up to 80 feet deep!. The road rises to an elevation of 6,646 feet, with expansive views, grazing mountain goats and covered in rainbow-hued wildflower meadows!. Worth it!.
…continuando, estávamos perto da fronteira com o Canada, que atravessámos…, depois da simpática guarda de fronteira nos pedir os documentos e fazer aquelas perguntas regulamentares, incluindo se transportávamos “marijuana”!. A todas as perguntas, respondemos “NÃO”, e ela, com um sorriso nos entregou os documentos e nos desejou “boa viajem”!.
…continuing, we were close to the border with Canada, which we crossed…, after the friendly border guard asked us for our documents and asked those regulatory questions, including whether we were carrying “marijuana”!. To all the questions, we answered “NO”, and she, with a smile, handed us the documents and wished us “have a good trip”!
…e assim acabámos por ao sétimo dia de viagem atravessar a fronteira para o Canadá!. Como tal, vamos fazendo algum progresso e lentamente nos vamos aproximando do objectivo que é o…, Alaska!.

…próximo da cidade de Cardston, na província de Alberta, pernoitámos num parque de RV, para amanhã continuar a nossa rota em direcção ao norte por estradas boas ou más, e isto faz-nos pensar que as viagens nunca acabam…, só os viajantes acabam!. Assim, nós veteranos vamos tentando prolongá-las em memórias, em lembranças, em narrativas…, agora, para os mais novos!.
