St. Louis, Missouri.

…a terra e o céu, bosques e campos, lagos e rios, a montanha e o mar, são excelentes professores e, às vezes ensinam-nos mais do que podemos aprender dos livros!. 

(…the land and the sky, woods and fields, lakes and rivers, the mountains and the sea, are excellent teachers and, sometimes they teach us more than we can learn from books)!.

…e, se pensam que as aventuras, conhecer novas culturas ou novos lugares remotos, são coisas perigosas, então tentem a rotina: vai matar-vos!.

(…and, if you think that adventures, getting to know new cultures or new remote places, are dangerous things, then try the routine: it will kill you)!.

…adoramos a natureza pura e selvagem!. As cidades para nós são apenas para se passarem, ou seja, quase parte da nossa rota na estrada mas, quando encontramos uma diferente e agradável, ficamos quase sem palavras e depois, “transforma-nos num contador de histórias”!. Hoje vamos falar de São Louis, no estado do Missouri, que também faz parte da nossa história, porque somos emigrantes vindos do leste a caminho do oeste!. 

(…we love pure and wild nature!. The cities for us are just for passing, that is, almost part of our route on the road, but when we find a different and pleasant one, we are almost speechless and then, “transform us into a storyteller”!. Today we are going to talk about Saint Louis, in the state of Missouri, which is also part of our history, because we are emigrants coming from the east on the way to the west)!.

…esta linda cidade, que se situa nas margens dos rios Mississippi e Missouri, tem o seu nome em homenagem ao rei Louis IX, sendo fundada no ano de 1764 como uma vila francesa de comércio de peles e, para nós tem sido um roteiro nas nossas viajens para oeste, tal como há mais de duas centenas de anos e à medida que o país passou a expandir-se em direcção ao oeste, o Missouri passou a ser uma das principais escalas dos emigrantes!.

(…this beautiful city, which is located on the banks of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers, is named after King Louis IX, founded in 1764 as a French fur trading village and, for us, it has been an itinerary in the our travels to the west, just as it did more than two hundred years ago and as the country started to expand towards the west, Missouri became one of the main stopovers of emigrants)!.

…no entanto, parar e apreciar a cidade, foi sòmente por duas vezes que tivemos algum tempo para dispender por aqui, numa cidade cujo cognome é, “Mother of the West”, a mãe do oeste, sendo adquirida pelos Estados Unidos na “Compra da Louisiana”, no ano de 1803, quando entre outras, a indústria agropecuária do Missouri fazia grande uso do “trabalho escravo”!.

(…however, stopping and enjoying the city, it was only twice that we had some time to spend here, in a city whose name is, “Mother of the West”, the mother of the west, being acquired by the United States in the “Purchase of Louisiana”, in 1803, when, among others, the agricultural industry in Missouri made great use of “slave labor”!.

…mas deixemos a sua história e vamos continuar, porque desta vez parámos, estacionando a nossa “White Fox” (caravana), na área portuária e, quase sem o notar lembrámos aquele musical “Meet Me in St. Louis”, (encontre-me em São Luis), estrelado por Judy Garland, que se passa nesta cidade e conta a história de uma família que não quer sair da cidade, por uma nova vida em Nova York!.

(…but let us leave its history and we will continue, because this time we stopped, parking our “White Fox” (caravan), in the port area and, almost without noticing it we remembered that musical “Meet Me in St. Louis”,  starring Judy Garland, which takes place in this city and tells the story of a family that does not want to leave the city, for a new life in New York)!.

…não sabemos bem porquê, mas também não queríamos sair da cidade!. Talvez, porque gostamos de cerveja e aqui é o local onde vive a cervejaria Anheuser Busch desde o ano de 1852, onde se podem ver os célebres  Clydesdales, (cavalos de raça Escocesa, grandes e poderosos, que a Anheuser-Busch usa uma equipe combinada de oito para sua publicidade), e que são a sua marca registrada, ou então porque ainda gostamos de bolos e, é aqui que servem um bolo de manteiga pegajoso, tradicionalmente feito e inventado em São Louis na década de 1930, depois que um padeiro por engano ter adicionado açúcar demais a uma receita de bolo de manteiga!.

(…we don’t really know why, but we also didn’t want to leave the city!. Perhaps, because we like beer and this is the place where the Anheuser Busch brewery has lived since 1852, where you can see the famous Clydesdales, (Scottish horses, big and powerful, that Anheuser-Busch uses a combined team eight for your advertising), and that are your trademark, or because we still like cakes and, this is where they serve a sticky butter cake, traditionally made and invented in St. Louis in the 1930s, after a baker mistakenly added too much sugar to a butter cake recipe)!.

…já íamos por outros caminhos!. Estávamos na área do porto fluvial, que naquela época era o maior porto do rio Mississippi, com a sua população a expandir-se depois da guerra civil Americana, chegando a ser a quarta cidade maior dos Estados Unidos no século desanove!.

(…we were already going on other paths!. We were in the area of ​​the river port, which at that time was the largest port on the Mississippi River, with its population expanding after the American civil war, becoming the fourth largest city in the United States in the uninhabited century)!.

…onde o monumento ”The Gateway to the West” está localizado, que é o local da fundação de St. Louis, na margem oeste do rio Mississippi, sendo a peça central do Parque Nacional Gateway Arch, tornando-se num símbolo internacionalmente reconhecido de St. Louis, bem como um destino turístico popular!.

(…where the “The Gateway to the West” monument is located, which is the foundation site of St. Louis, on the west bank of the Mississippi River, being the centerpiece of Gateway Arch National Park, becoming an internationally recognized symbol of St. Louis, as well as a popular tourist destination)!.

…foi projetado pelo arquiteto finlandês-americano Eero Saarinen no ano de 1947, revestido em aço inoxidável e construído na forma de um arco catenário ponderado!. É o arco mais alto do mundo e o mais alto monumento feito pelo homem no hemisfério ocidental, sendo construído como um monumento à expansão para o oeste dos Estados Unidos e oficialmente dedicado ao “povo americano”, avistando-se a milhas de distância!.

(…was designed by the Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen in 1947, clad in stainless steel and built in the shape of a weighted catenary arc!. It is the tallest arch in the world and the tallest man-made monument in the western hemisphere, being built as a monument to the westward expansion of the United States and officially dedicated to the “American people”, seen from miles away)!.

…no seu pedestral, tem um museu com motivos do oeste, e exemplificando o que os emigrantes faziam e usavam a caminho do oeste, depois de terem viajado, talvez por anos, no rio Mississippi, vindos dos portos de Boston, New York ou Philadelphia, que depois de saírem de São Luis, levavam outros tantos anos a chegar à Califórnia, ou mesmo ao sul, viajando pela “Santa Fé Trail”, que também era conhecida pelo “Caminho Real”, que era um caminho que os levava às regiões do sul, junto à fronteira do México!.

(…in its pedestral, it has a museum with western motifs, and exemplifying what emigrants did and used on the way west, after having traveled, perhaps for years, on the Mississippi River, coming from the ports of Boston, New York or Philadelphia, which after leaving São Luis, took another many years to reach California, or even to the south, traveling on the “Santa Fé Trail”, which was also known for the “Caminho Real”, which was a path that took them to the southern regions, near the border of Mexico)!.

…andámos entre outras áreas, pelo seu porto fluvial, onde existem barcos típicos, (alguns funcionam como casinos), imitando os movidos a vapor, que chegaram a esta hoje cidade por volta do ano de 1817 e, onde na década de 1850 mais 5.000 barcos a vapor viajavam pelo rio a cada ano!.

(…we walked among other areas, through its river port, where there are typical boats, (some work like casinos), imitating those powered by steam, which arrived in this city today around the year 1817 and, where in the 1850s 5,000 more steamboats traveled the river each year)!.

…caminhando, parámos aqui e aqli, parece que este porto tem magia, ao ponto de para nós ser difícil abandonar este local, dá-nos a sensação que tem fascínio, tem história, em cada local faz nascer lembranças, o rio está lá, a correr em direcção ao sul, naquela curva a água pára, faz um remoínho, a lembrar-nos que era ali que as pessoas ficavam rodando em redor umas das outras depois de desembarcarem, e não sabiam qual a direcção que tomariam, sabiam sómente que iam à aventura, por anos, percorrendo caminhos selvagens, construindo os seus próprios utensílios, carros rudimentares, que com a ajuda de animais, viajavam, nasciam filhos que chegavam já grandes ao local de destino, quando havia destino!.

(…walking, we stopped here and there, it seems that this port has magic, to the point that it is difficult for us to leave this place, it gives us the feeling that it has fascination, it has history, in each place it gives birth to memories, the river is there, running towards the south, in that curve the water stops, makes a whirlwind, reminding us that it was there that people were spinning around each other after disembarking, and they did not know which direction they would take, they only knew that they went on adventure, for years, traveling wild paths, building their own utensils, rudimentary cars, which, with the help of animals, traveled, children were born who had already arrived at their destination, when there was a destination)!.

…está localizada na confluência do rio Mississippi e do rio Missouri, funcionando naqueles anos como entreposto comercial, e claro, devido à sua localização foi motivo de guerras entre franceses e ameríndios, passando mais tarde para as mãos espanholas, todavia, juntamente com o resto do território da Louisiana, foi devolvida à França, tendo a cidade sido adquirida à França pelos Estados Unidos, com a “Compra da Louisiana”, tal como acima já mencionámos!. 

(…is located at the confluence of the Mississippi River and the Missouri River, functioning in those years as a commercial warehouse, and of course, due to its location it was the cause of wars between the French and the Amerindians, passing later on to the Spanish hands, however, together with the rest of Louisiana’s territory was returned to France, and the city was acquired from France by the United States, with the “Purchase of Louisiana”, as mentioned above)!.

…a sua localização era estratégica para a época, convertendo-se num ponto de partida de exploradores do Oeste Americano e colonizadores que emigravam para Oeste e, hoje quem se aproxime da cidade, mesmo a muitas milhas de distância, pode avistar o “Gateway Arch”, que tal como acima mencionámos, dizem que é o mais alto monumento em solo norte americano!. 

(…its location was strategic for the time, becoming a starting point for explorers from the American West and colonizers who emigrated to the West and, today anyone who approaches the city, even from many miles away, can see the “Gateway Arch”, which, as mentioned above, is said to be the tallest monument on North American soil)!.

…talvez sem o notar voltámos à história, no entanto este grandioso arco, também serviu de guia para nós, que seguimos o nosso rumo para oeste, procurando nossas aventuras por estas planícies quase desertas, atravessando os estado do Missouri e do Kansas, pelo menos até às montanhas do Colorado!.

(…perhaps without noticing it we returned to history, however this great arch also served as a guide for us, who followed our course to the west, looking for our adventures in these almost desert plains, crossing the states of Missouri and Kansas, at least to the mountains of Colorado)!.
