Harpers Ferry, West Virginia

…a tarde já ia avançada, quando chegámos ao vale de Shenandoah na confluência dos rios Potomac e Shenandoah, onde se juntam os  estados de Maryland, Virgínia e West Virgínia!. Pernoitámos por ali e, ao outro dia caminhámos pelas ruas calcetadas em pedra, pelas encostas agrestes e pela margem dos rios, parecendo-nos que viajávamos no tempo!.

…the afternoon was already late, when we arrived in the Shenandoah valley at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers, where the states of Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia join!. We spent the night there and, the other day we walked through the cobbled streets, the rough slopes and the riverside, looking like we were traveling in time!.

…já lá iam uns anos em que a curiosidade em visitar esta simpática cidade museu crescia em nós!. Porquê? Porque a sua história, pelo menos durante a Guerra Civil Americana, foi considerada o ponto mais ao norte do território controlado pelos confederados, embora um pouco mais a norte, mesmo a muito pouca distância, era unionista, e claro, falando da Guerra Civil, era considerado “o melhor ponto estratégico de todo o Sul”!.

…there were some years when the curiosity to visit this nice museum city grew in us!. Because? Because its history, at least during the American Civil War, was considered the most northerly point in the territory controlled by the Confederates, although a little further north, even at a very short distance, it was unionist, and of course, speaking of the Civil War, it was considered “the best strategic point in the whole South”!.

…caminhando por aqui, verificamos que as características geográficas de Harpers Ferry, são as principais razões para sua colonização e eventual desenvolvimento, tornando este local como um centro de transporte natural, situado na encosta de um grande rio, o Shenandoah, que se junta ao Rio Potomac, dando-nos a entender que Harpers Ferry guardava a entrada do grande Vale Shenandoah, na Virgínia, enquanto o rio Potomac proporcionava fácil acesso à capital  Washington!. 

…walking here, we find that the geographical characteristics of Harpers Ferry, are the main reasons for its colonization and eventual development, making this place as a center of natural transport, located on the side of a large river, the Shenandoah, which joins the Potomac River, implying that Harpers Ferry guarded the entrance to the great Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, while the Potomac River provided easy access to the capital Washington!.

…e mais, os vales dos rios possibilitaram a construção do canal de Chesapeake e Ohio, (que nunca foi concluído), e depois os caminhos de ferro de Baltimore e Ohio, logo seguidos dos caminhos de ferro de Winchester e Potomac, perfazendo assim o primeiro entroncamento ferroviário nos USA, sendo a primeira e por muitos anos a única ponte ferroviária sobre o rio Potomac!.

…and more, the river valleys made it possible to build the Chesapeake and Ohio canal, (which was never completed), and then the Baltimore and Ohio railways, soon followed by the Winchester and Potomac railways, thus making the first rail junction in the United States, being the first and for many years the only railway bridge over the Potomac River!.

…e claro, seguiram-se as linhas telegráficas e todas as outras componentes de um progresso e, a palavra Ferry (balsa) que dá o nome à cidade, terminou, quando uma ponte rodoviária em madeira coberta foi construída e, nenhuma das pontes de Washington D.C. conectando com a Virgínia, transportava mais tráfego de cavalos, pelo menos até depois da Guerra Civil!.

…and of course, telegraph lines and all other components of progress followed, and the word Ferry that gives the city its name ended when a covered wooden road bridge was built and none of the bridges Washington DC connecting with Virginia, carried more horse traffic, at least until after the Civil War!.

…vale a pena caminhar por aqui, onde a parte inferior e original da cidade se situa numa planície de inundação criada pelos dois rios,  cercada por um terreno mais alto, fazendo parte do Parque Histórico Nacional Harpers Ferry, que inclui a área mais populosa, onde está incluído o distrito histórico, fazendo parte do Registro Nacional de Lugares Históricos e, adjacentes à cidade, estão o Baltimore e Ohio  Railroad Potomac River Crossing e a Igreja Católica Romana de São Pedro!.

…it is worth walking here, where the lower and original part of the city is located on a floodplain created by the two rivers, surrounded by higher ground, forming part of the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, which includes the most populous area, where the historic district is included, forming part of the National Register of Historic Places and, adjacent to the city, are the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Potomac River Crossing and the Roman Catholic Church of St. Peter!.

…vários presidentes dos USA visitaram Harpers Ferry e, Thomas Jefferson viu “a passagem do Potomac através do Blue Ridge” de uma rocha que agora leva seu nome!. …several presidents of the USA visited Harpers Ferry and, Thomas Jefferson saw “the passage of the Potomac through the Blue Ridge” of a rock that now bears his name!. This stop occurred when Jefferson was traveling to Philadelphia with his daughter Patsy, calling it “perhaps one of the most amazing scenes in nature”, stating that, “this scene is worth a trip across the Atlantic”!.

…e George Washington, viajou para Harpers Ferry durante o verão de 1785 para determinar a necessidade de canais de desvio e, em 1794,  a sua familiaridade com a área o levou a propor o local para um novo Arsenal dos USA!. Como tal, no ano de 1796, o governo federal comprou um terreno de 125 acres e, três anos depois iniciou a construção do Arsenal dos USA em Harpers Ferry!. Esta foi uma das duas únicas instalações nos USA, sendo a outra Springfield, Massachusetts, onde juntos, produziram a maioria das armas pequenas para o Exército dos USA!.

…and George Washington, traveled to Harpers Ferry during the summer of 1785 to determine the need for diversion channels and, in 1794, his familiarity with the area led him to propose the site for a new United States Arsenal!. As such, in the year 1796, the federal government purchased 125 acres of land and, three years later, began building the United States Arsenal on Harpers Ferry!. This was one of only two facilities in the US, the other being Springfield, Massachusetts, where together they produced most of the small arms for the US Army!.

…Brown foi rapidamente julgado em Charles Town, sede do condado de Jefferson, por traição contra a Comunidade da Virgínia, assassinato e fomento de uma insurreição de escravos, sendo condenado por todas as acusações!. Foi enforcado em 2 de dezembro de 1859!. As palavras de John Brown, tanto da sua entrevista com o governador da Virgínia, quanto do seu famoso “último discurso”, “capturaram a atenção da nação como nenhum outro abolicionista ou proprietário de escravos antes ou depois”!.

…Brown was quickly tried in Charles Town, Jefferson County, for treason against the Commonwealth of Virginia, murder and fomenting a slave uprising, and was convicted on all charges! He was hanged on December 2, 1859!. John Brown’s words, both from his interview with the governor of Virginia, and from his famous “last speech”, “captured the nation’s attention like no other abolitionist or slave owner before or after”!.

…devido sobretudo à sua localização estratégica, a cidade era “fácil de conquistar mas difícil de segurar”!. Assim a Guerra Civil foi desastrosa para Harpers Ferry, que mudou de mãos oito vezes entre 1861 e 1865, apresentando um quadro bastante sombrio, onde os melhores edifícios foram totalmente destruídos e nada restava, excepto as suas fundações para marcar o local onde eles estiveram!. O Arsenal foi totalmente queimado e aquela parte do prédio onde o velho John Brown fez uma resistência tão fatal, ainda permaneceu como um monumento à sua memória!. 

…due mainly to its strategic location, the city was “easy to conquer but difficult to insure”!. Thus, the Civil War was disastrous for Harpers Ferry, who changed hands eight times between 1861 and 1865, presenting a rather bleak picture, where the best buildings were totally destroyed and there was nothing left, except their foundations to mark the place where they were!. The Arsenal was totally burned and that part of the building where old John Brown made such a fatal resistance, still remained as a monument to your memory!.

…como acima já mencionámos, por causa da sua localização estratégica e do caminho de ferro da Baltimore & Ohio, no extremo norte do Vale Shenandoah, as tropas da União e dos Confederados  deslocavam-se com frequência através da Harpers Ferry e, a guarnição da cidade de 14.000 soldados federais atraiu 1.500 contrabandos (escravos fugidos) que infelizmente foram devolvidos à escravidão quando as forças confederadas tomaram Harpers Ferry por volta do ano de 1862!.

…as we have already mentioned, because of its strategic location and the Baltimore & Ohio railroad, at the northern end of the Shenandoah Valley, Union and Confederate troops frequently moved through Harpers Ferry and, the garrison of the the city of 14,000 federal soldiers attracted 1,500 smugglers (escaped slaves) who unfortunately were returned to slavery when the Confederate forces seized Harpers Ferry around 1862!.

…depois, a Guerra Civil prolongou-se, onde de acordo com a história,  Harpers Ferry desempenhou um papel fundamental e, em pouco mais de uma semana antes de uma das muitas batalhas, o general Robert E. …then the Civil War went on, where according to history, Harpers Ferry played a key role and, in just over a week before one of the many battles, General Robert E. Lee had lost more than half of his army and, during the siege of Petersburg in June 1864 to April 1865, Lee had about 60,000 hungry and demoralized men under his command to oppose more than 100,000 Union soldiers!. At that moment he observed that to avoid unnecessary destruction to the south, “there was nothing more to be done” than surrender to Lieutenant-General Ulysses S. …a cidade também é a sede da Appalachian Trail Conservancy, porque a Trilha dos Apalaches passa diretamente pela cidade, (e nós percorremos parte do seu pequeno percurso), que alguns consideram o ponto médio psicológico desta famosa trilha, embora o ponto médio físico exacto seja mais ao norte, no estado da Pennsilvânia, (que era o nosso destino original), todavia, excepcionalmente, as cidades de Harpers Ferry e Bolivar fizeram parceria com a Appalaches Trail Conservancy, para serem declaradas uma Comunidade unida da Trilha dos Apalaches!.

…the city is also the headquarters of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, because the Appalachian Trail passes directly through the city, (and we cover part of its short route), which some consider the psychological midpoint of this famous trail, although the exact physical midpoint be further north, in the state of Pennsilvania, (which was our original destination), however, exceptionally, the cities of Harpers Ferry and Bolivar have partnered with the Appalaches Trail Conservancy, to be declared a united Community of the Appalachian Trail!.

…e, alguns dos edifícios históricos da cidade, são usados ​​pelo National Park Service para um de seus quatro centros de treinamento nacionais, sendo hoje o National Park Service, o maior empregador da Harpers Ferry do século XXI!.

…Parque Nacional da Floresta Petrificada, Arizona!. (…Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona!.)

…viajando sentimos alguma tranquilidade!. Sim, tranquilidade ao apreciar um trecho de estrada deserta ou um qualquer pássaro ou animal selvagem rodeado de folhas secas, porque viajamos no oeste, no estado do Arizona, em direcção ao mar Atlântico, ou seja, em direcção à nossa Flórida, no entanto continuávamos a parar aqui e ali, nem que fosse para apreciar um qualquer conjunto de cores violeta, amarelo ou laranja, em qualquer lugar ou em qualquer pôr do sol, porque o dia já ia longo!.

…traveling we feel some tranquility!. Yes, tranquility when enjoying a deserted road or any wild bird or animal surrounded by dried leaves, because we travel in the west, the state of Arizona, towards the Atlantic sea, that is, towards our Florida, but we would still stop here and there, even to enjoy any set of violet, yellow or orange colors, anywhere or in any sunset, the day far away!.

…e já passava do meio dia, no entanto estava no nosso roteiro visitar o Parque Nacional da Floresta Petrificada, assim abandonámos a estrada rápida I-40, saindo na cidade de Holbrook, Arizona, entrando numa estrada com uma ainda linha de postes telefónicos em troncos de madeira que marca o leito da hoje histórica “Route 66” dentro deste parque!.

E para quê?. Carregar connosco tantos milhões de anos!.

…more words for what?. We, who often mention that “in the face of various scenarios we become in storytellers”, here, after walking, observing, and of course, photographing all this wonderful scenario, we can only mention what the various signs who often appear to us, who mention “Collecting Petrified Wood Is Prohibited”!. Mexican Hat Rock, Utah!.

…quando viajamos numa qualquer estrada, a experiência diz-nos que para lá daquela pequena nuvem ou do cume daquela montanha ainda coberta com alguma neve que encobre milhões de anos de vida, existe sempre um cenário com imagens que não se dissipam da nossa memória!.

…when we travel on any road, the experience tells us that beyond that small cloud or the summit of that mountain still covered with some snow that covers millions of life, there is always a scenario with images that do not dissipate our memory!.

…foi o que nos aconteceu quando viajávamos em direcção ao sul pela estrada U.S. #163, um pouco antes, mas ainda fora dos limites da Navajo Nation e do Monument Valley, ao lado esquerdo, reparando neste unusual monumento em arenito vermelho, a que dão o nome de “Chapéu Mexicano”, que vem de uma rocha curiosamente em forma de “sombrero” na extremidade nordeste da cidade com o mesmo nome!.

…this is what happened to us when we traveled south by the U.S. #163, just before, but still outside the boundaries of Navajo Nation and Monument Valley, on the left, noticing this unusual monument in red sandstone, which gives the “Mexican hat”, which comes from a rock curiously in the northeast end of the city with the same end name!.

…esta rocha mede 18 metros de largura por 3,7 m e, existem duas rotas de escalada que podemos usar para subir até junto do monumento!. Este nome de “Chapéu mexicano” tem sido frequentemente observado em listas de nomes de lugares incomuns!.

…ainda um pouco antes de entrar na área do “Chapéu Mexicano”, seguindo na mesma direcção, virando também à esquerda atravessamos a ponte do rio San Juan, dirigindo com algum cuidado e virando à esquerda no San Juan River, existem alguns estabelecimentos comercias e um Posto Comercial, embora exista uma grande seta apontada na direção oposta!.

...just before entering the area of “Chapéu Mexicano”, going in the same direction, also turning left, we cross the bridge of the river San Juan, driving with some care and turning left on the San Juan River, there are some establishments stores and a Trading Post, although there is a large arrow pointing in the opposite direction!.

…aqui, das margens do rio San Juan, podemos admirar uma vista maravilhosa,  especialmente ao pôr do sol!. Nós admirámos e recomendamos!.

…o Kit Carson do velho oeste!. (…the Old West Kit Carson)!.

…viajando pelo inesquecível coração do oeste/centro/leste americano, seguindo numa qualquer estrada às vezes deserta, podemos explorar a sua rica história, onde as expectativas são mais elevadas de encontrar  paisagens deslumbrantes ou até a beleza da vida selvagem, dos riachos ou das montanhas, sejam elas pequenas ou grandes, com curvas amplas e vistas deslumbrantes, e claro, com muita beleza de imprevisível!.

…traveling through the unforgettable heart of the West/Centro/Eastern American, following a sometimes deserted road, we can explore its rich history, where expectations are higher of finding dazzling landscapes or even the beauty of wildlife, streams or mountains, whether small or large, with large curves and stunning views, and of course, with great beauty!.

…e foi mais ou menos o que hoje fizemos quando passámos pelo estado do Colorado, viajando por estradas que atravessam transversalmente “pradarias” em direcção ao sul/leste, onde seguíamos em plena “pradaria aberta”, passando pela pequena cidade de Kit Carson!.

Hoje, a cidade está mais silenciosa do que no passado e os bares desapareceram e restam apenas alguns cafés e hotéis, mas andando por aqui, quase se pode ouvir esporas tilintando, os cavalos relinchando e os copos tilintando, tal como se vê em alguns filmes de Hollywood!. 

…the city was founded in 1838, and was once the western terminal of Union Pacific Railroad, however, its location made it a shopping center with vast expiration of pastures and around four hundred oil and gas wells, and it is not surprised that agriculture, livestock and oil production are the main industries in the area!. …”viva”, a família visitou-nos!. (…”hurray”, the family visited us)!. 

…apesar de já estar-mos em Fevereiro deste novo ano, no silêncio da madrugada, acordamos com as imagens que nos ficaram do verão passado e que nos marcaram, porque recebemos de novo a maravilhosa visita da família!. 

…although it is already February of this new year, in the silence of the early morning, we woke up with the images that we have from last summer and that have left a mark on us, because we received the wonderful visit of the family again!.

…hoje sábado, para lá dos vidros da janela, o azul do tempo e do convívio durante a visita da nossa filha Sandy e da nossa neta Leila, tal como num filme, deu um pouco lugar ao cinzento, voltando a cruzarem-se sensações de alguma alegria!.

…constantemente pede a comida feita pela avó e, sem qualquer dúvida que as crianças onde os avós compartilham histórias sobre a sua infância dão às crianças o conhecimento de que elas são parte de algo maior e, aquelas que conhecem mais histórias de família podem crescer com maior auto-estima e sofrer menos de depressão e ansiedade no futuro!.

…constantly asks for food made by grandmother and, without a doubt, children whose grandparents share stories about their childhood give them the knowledge that they are part of something bigger and, those who know more family stories can grow up with greater self-esteem and suffer less from depression and anxiety in the future!.

 …o mundo continua lá fora, no entanto, a vida e a juventude desta criança inocente e da nossa filha Sandy, que estão aqui tão perto, reforçam a nossa noção do mundo dos humanos, onde teremos que viver em paz e convívio constante, deixando para lá o outro mundo, onde continua a tragédia da aniquilação de gerações!.

…Denali National Park and Preserve, Alaska!.

…a cidade de Fairbanks tinha ficado para trás pelo retrovisor!. Íamos rumo ao sul, agora pela “Parks Highway” (estrada #3), com bom tempo, atravessando algumas pontes sobre rios ou riachos, apreciando um cenário de alguma montanha com longas retas e curvas suaves até ao “Denali National Park and Preserve”!.

…the city of Fairbanks had been behind the rearview mirror!. We were going to the south, now for “Parks Highway” (road #3), with a good time, crossing some bridges on rivers or streams, enjoying a scenario of some mountain with long straight and soft curves to the “Denali National Park and Preserve”!.

…aqui, já em expedições anteriores tínhamos conduzido a nossa “White Fox” (caravana) até onde era autorizado no Parque Denali!. Isto era uma coisa, no entanto viajar para dentro do parque, era outra!. Porquê?. Porque a estrada que nos leva ao Parque Denali é uma das estradas mais bonitas onde provavelmente já viajamos!. Ela mergulha em algumas milhas na natureza selvagem do Alaska e…, ao conseguirmos chegar cada vez mais perto do Grande Denali, ou Monte McKinley,se preferirem, a montanha mais alta dos USA, é quase certo que vamos ter alguns encontros inesquecíveis com a vida selvagem ao longo deste caminho!.

…então porque razão não o podemos fazer na nossa “White Fox” (caravana)?. Simplesmente porque não nos é permitido!. Após as primeiras 18 ou 20 milhas, a circulação de veículos particulares é restrita!. Para além do Savage River, ou seja, para lá da pequena ponte que o atravessa, aproximadamente na milha 15 ou 16, a estrada é de terra e cascalho, e apenas camionetas aprovadas pelo parque são permitidas!.

…como tal, vindos do norte e chegamos ao Centro de Visitas do Parque e prontos para o explorar, informaram-nos que para isso era necessário pagar pela viajem, que seria feita em camionetas do parque!. Apesar de na nossa já um pouco avançada idade todos os centavos contam, no entanto, comprámos os bilhetes com todos aqueles descontos permitidos pela idade e…, lá fomos pela estrada que começa ganhando alguma elevação depois de deixar o Centro de Visitas, mergulhando instantaneamente nas profundezas da natureza!.

…e era verdade!. Durante as quase cinco horas de viajem, percorremos parte dos mais de seis milhões de acres de terras selvagens, da montanha mais alta da América do Norte, com cerca de 20.310 pés, cortada ao meio apenas por uma única estrada de terra e cascalho, com mais de 100 milhas de extensão!. Parando aqui e ali, com explicações do condutor/guia, umas vezes dando prioridade aos animais para atravessar a estrada outras atravessando áreas de precipícios ou cruzando pequenos riachos, percorremos vales, montanhas grandes com neve, outras mais pequenas com lindos cenários e ovelhas Dali pastando!. Vimos ursos pardos e negros, lobos, caribus e alces, bem como águias douradas e carecas, e muitas outras formas de vida selvagem, incluindo as já mencionadas ovelhas Dali!. Valeu a pena!.

…comunidades remotas em Montana!. (…remote communities in Montana)!.

…estávamos em Red Lodge, Montana e chovia!. Era nossa intenção, mais uma vez tentar viajar pela Highway 212, que é a panorâmica Beartooth Highway, no entanto, parte dela estava interdita porque o temporal causou algumas inundações mas, vagarosamente íamos prosseguindo parando aqui e ali, onde outros viajantes que se cruzavam com nós também paravam e trocávamos informação de como a estrada estava e até onde se podia chegar!.

…we were in Red Lodge, Montana and it was raining!. It was our intention, once again, to try to travel along Highway 212, which is the scenic Beartooth Highway, however, part of it was closed because the storm caused some flooding, but we slowly continued stopping here and there, where other travelers who crossed paths with We also stopped and exchanged information on how the road was and how far we could get!.

…era a famosa e panorâmica Beartooth Highway, que entra ao norte do estado de Wyoming, como tal havia que tentar prosseguir porque o cenário, mesmo com um tempo de chuva era deslumbrante!. Prosseguimos, já tínhamos entrado no estado de Wyoming e quase todos os viajantes com quem nos cruzávamos nos diziam que conseguiram chegaram até à comunidade de Cooke City, em Montana, mas daí para diante a estrada estava mesmo interdita, portanto voltavam!.

…it was the famous and panoramic Beartooth Highway, which enters the north of the state of Wyoming, so we had to try to continue because the scenery, even in rainy weather, was stunning! We continued, we had already entered the state of Wyoming and almost all the travelers we met told us that they had managed to reach the community of Cooke City, in Montana, but from then on the road was closed, so they returned!

…nós tentámos fazer o mesmo, como tal prosseguimos, seguindo para oeste/norte entrando de novo em Montana, chegando à já mencionada comunidade de Cooke City, que nos pareceu um local muito pitoresco e o cenário desta estrada que serpenteia pela Floresta Nacional Shoshone e pelas montanhas, também tem história porque em algumas partes segue a rota seguida pelo “Chefe Joseph” para fora do hoje Parque Nacional de Yellowstone e para Montana, no ano de 1877, durante a sua tentativa de fugir da Cavalaria dos EUA e escapar para o Canadá!. 

…we tried to do the same, so we continued, heading west/north back into Montana, arriving at the aforementioned community of Cooke City, which seemed like a very picturesque place and the setting for this road that winds through the Shoshone National Forest and through the mountains, it also has history because in some parts it follows the route taken by “Chief Joseph” out of what is now Yellowstone National Park and into Montana in 1877, during his attempt to escape the US Cavalry and escape to Canada!. 

…toda esta área era relativamente desconhecida para os homens brancos até o final da década de 1860, quando garimpeiros rondavam a área em busca de ouro, no entanto hoje, a principal indústria da comunidade de Cooke City, é o turismo, que durante o inverno inclui esqui e snowmobile!. A  famosa e panorâmica Beartooth Highway, passa pelo seu centro, levando a sudoeste até o Parque Nacional de Yellowstone, numa rota panorâmica que sobe a 10.947 pés (3.337 m) de altitude através das montanhas e do Planalto Beartooth!, para continuar a sudeste de volta ao Wyoming no vale do rio Clarks Fork Yellowstone!.

…this entire area was relatively unknown to white men until the late 1860s, when prospectors prowled the area in search of gold, however today, the Cooke City community’s main industry is tourism, which during the winter includes skiing and snowmobiling!. The famous and scenic Beartooth Highway passes through its center, leading southwest to Yellowstone National Park on a scenic route that climbs 10,947 feet (3,337 m) in elevation through the mountains and Beartooth Plateau!, to continue southeast of back to Wyoming in the Clarks Fork Yellowstone River Valley!.

…a sua localização geográfica é remota, por estar cercada por altos picos e passagens de montanhas e o único acesso rodoviário durante todo o ano é a partir da localidade de Gardiner,  Montana, que está localizada na entrada nordeste do Parque Nacional Yellowstone!. Todavia, também tem acesso rodoviário a partir de Red Lodge, Montana, (que foi seguido por nós), mas é sazonal, abrindo no final da primavera e fechando bem no início do inverno!.

…its geographical location is remote, as it is surrounded by high peaks and mountain passes and the only year-round road access is from the town of Gardiner, Montana, which is located at the northeast entrance of Yellowstone National Park!. …a despovoação em alguns territórios no ocidente era normal, porque as possíveis minas de ouro estavam geralmente localizadas em locais remotos e como tal despovoados, no entanto foi a mineração que alimentou os motores da colonização e da “civilização” no ocidente!. Assim, Cooke City era remota,  ficava a muitos dias de dolorosas caminhadas em trilhas difíceis do assentamento mais próximo, que era a hoje cidade de Bozeman, Montana!. 

…depopulation in some territories in the West was normal, because possible gold mines were generally located in remote and therefore unpopulated locations, however it was mining that fueled the engines of colonization and “civilization” in the West!. Thus, Cooke City was remote, it was many days of painful hiking on difficult trails from the nearest settlement, which was today the city of Bozeman, Montana!. 

…só por volta de 1869-70, os primeiros mineiros começaram a descobrir ouro na área e no início desta comunidade, os lotes de terreno de esquina foram vendidos inicialmente por 20 dolares e os lotes internos por 10 dolares e por aqui havia cerca de 35 homens e uma mulher nesta nova comunidade de Cooke City, onde começaram a construir casas de toras de madeira…, onde o que hoje é a rua principal!.

…não esquecemos Homer Spit, Alaska!. (…we haven’t forgotten Homer Spit, Alaska)!.

…foi a quarta vez que visitámos “Homer Spit” porque para nós continua a ser um dos nossos lugares preferidos!. Por aqui ficamos alguns dias, dizendo sempre…, que na próxima oportunidade cá estaremos de novo, porque encontramos um maravilhoso cenário de docas com águas profundas ou rasas e as cores das mais 1.500 embarcações comerciais e de lazer!.

…it was the fourth time we visited “Homer Spit” because for us it continues to be one of our favorite places!. We stayed here for a few days, always saying… that next time we will be here again, because we found a wonderful scenery of docks with deep or shallow waters and the colors of over 1,500 commercial and leisure vessels!.

…”Homer Spit” é um fenómeno geográfico muito estranho!. O terreno circundante do continente é acidentado, mas a ponta em si não é muito mais do que um banco de areia, embora seja um banco de areia incrível que se estende por quase sete quilómetros até a Baía de Kachemak!. Ninguém sabe exatamente como se formou, seja por correntes de maré complexas ou pelo recuo de antigas geleiras!.

…”Homer Spit” is a very strange geographical phenomenon!. The terrain surrounding the mainland is rugged, but the point itself isn’t much more than a sandbar, although it is an incredible sandbar that stretches nearly seven kilometers into Kachemak Bay!. No one knows exactly how it was formed, whether by complex tidal currents or the retreat of ancient glaciers!.

…existem outras atracções adicionais, como por exemplo, o “The Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon”, que é um “buraco de pesca” artificial, acampamentos, hotéis e restaurantes!. O “Salty Dawg Saloon”, é provavelmente o marco mais notável de “Homer Spit”  porque o seu exterior peculiar, (um farol de madeira combinado com um galpão rústico), faz com que se destaque, mas o verdadeiro charme está no interior onde a atmosfera é verdadeiramente única, é mal iluminada, sempre movimentada, e cada centímetro das paredes e do teto está coberto de notas de dólar deixadas por visitantes de todo o mundo!.

…there are other additional attractions, such as “The Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon”, which is an artificial “fishing hole”, campsites, hotels and restaurants!. The “Salty Dawg Saloon”, is probably “Homer Spit’s” most notable landmark because its quirky exterior, (a wooden lighthouse combined with a rustic shed), makes it stand out, but the real charm is inside where the atmosphere is truly It’s unique, it’s dimly lit, always busy, and every inch of the walls and ceiling is covered in dollar bills left by visitors from all over the world!.

“viajem das Christmas de 2024 ao norte”, (“Christmas 2024 trip to the north”) (#2)

…olá!. Ainda se lembram da primeira parte do resumo desta  viajem das “Christmas de 2024 ao norte”?. Cá vai a parte final!.

…entretanto entrámos no estado de Delaware, viajando apenas por uma pequena parte deste pequeno estado do Meio Atlântico dos EUA, que fica em uma península marcada por praias com dunas que margeiam o Oceano Atlântico, o Rio Delaware e a Baía de Delaware!.

…however, we entered the state of Delaware, traveling only through a small part of this small state in the Mid-Atlantic USA, which is located on a peninsula marked by beaches with dunes that border the Atlantic Ocean, the Delaware River and the Delaware Bay!.

…desviando-nos para norte, entrámos no estado de Pennsylvania, onde parte do seu território é montanhoso, abrangendo as regiões do Meio-Atlântico, Nordeste, Apalaches e Grandes Lagos dos USA!. A Pennsylvania desempenhou um papel vital e histórico na Revolução Americana e na busca bem-sucedida pela independência de o Império Britânico, hospedando o Primeiro e o Segundo Congresso Continental na Filadélfia que formou o Exército Continental e nomeou George Washington como seu comandante no ano de 1775, e adotou por unanimidade a Declaração de Independência no ano seguinte!.

…turning north, we enter the state of Pennsylvania, where part of its territory is mountainous, covering the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast, Appalachian and Great Lakes regions of the USA!. Pennsylvania played a vital and historic role in the American Revolution and the successful quest for independence from the British Empire, hosting the First and Second Continental Congresses in Philadelphia that formed the Continental Army and named George Washington as its commander in the year 1775. , and unanimously adopted the Declaration of Independence the following year!.

…por aqui passámos a véspera de Natal, no meio da montanha de Pocono, convivendo com parte da família e vendo cair a neve que cobria o chão da floresta!.

…here we spent Christmas Eve, in the middle of Pocono Mountain, spending time with family and watching the snow fall that covered the forest floor!.

…pela manhã e descendo a montanha, viajámos para a planície do estado de Nova Jersey, visitando e convivendo com a outra parte da família!.

…in the morning and descending the mountain, we traveled to the plains of the state of New Jersey, visiting and spending time with the other part of the family!.

…Nova Jersey é um estado do nordeste dos EUA com uma grande área de costa Atlântica!. Jersey City, do outro lado do rio Hudson, em Lower Manhattan, é o local do Liberty State Park, onde as balsas embarcam para a vizinha Ellis Island, com seu histórico Museu da Imigração e a icónica Estátua da Liberdade!. A costa de Jersey inclui cidades turísticas notáveis, como o histórico Asbury Park e Cape May, com seus edifícios vitorianos preservados!.

…New Jersey is a northeastern US state with a large area of ​​Atlantic coastline!. Jersey City, across the Hudson River in Lower Manhattan, is the site of Liberty State Park, where ferries board to nearby Ellis Island, with its historic Immigration Museum and iconic Statue of Liberty!. …na cidade de Elizabeth, onde vivemos por longos anos, quase todos os dias éramos convidados com gentileza a sairmos e ir-mos visitar amigos de longa data, todavia o tempo era pouco, mas deu para visitar o casal Natércia e Jorge, amigos de muitas dezenas de anos, confraternizando e recordando episódios de quando éramos jovens!.

…in the city of Elizabeth, where we lived for many years, almost every day we were kindly invited to go out and visit long-time friends, however time was short, but we were able to visit the couple Natércia and Jorge, friends from many decades, socializing and remembering episodes from when we were young!.

…e era tempo de regresso!. A viagem foi de alguma chuva gelada e nevoeiro, todavia, conforme íamos viajando para sul o tempo ia aquecendo, chegando à nossa casa na Florida onde sentimos alguma segurança…, um pouco livres deste mundo de pura solidão e onde o vazio enche quase tudo!.

…and it was time to return! The trip was filled with freezing rain and fog, however, as we traveled south the weather warmed up, arriving at our home in Florida where we felt some safety…, a little free from this world of pure loneliness and where emptiness fills almost everything!

“viajem das Christmas de 2024 ao norte”, (“Christmas 2024 trip to the north”)

…fomos ao norte, porque às vezes é necessário retornar à infância, ao seio da família, o único porto de abrigo e…, caminhámos na neve das montanhas de Pennsylvania, porque a experiência de vida diz-nos que nada vive para sempre, só talvez as montanhas e os rios que correm para o mar vivem até o sol se apagar…, depois tudo ficará escuro e já não haverá olhos para ver!.

…we went to the north, because sometimes it is necessary to return to childhood, to the heart of the family, the only haven of shelter and…, we walked in the snow of the mountains of Pennsylvania, because life experience tells us that nothing lives forever, only Maybe the mountains and the rivers that flow to the sea live until the sun goes out…, then everything will be dark and there will be no more eyes to see!.

…depois dum confortável e aconchegante convívio com parte da família nessas montanhas, descemos para o gelo das planícies de Nova Jersey, recebendo de novo o calor da outra parte da família, porque infelizmente o ser humano vivendo fechado ao egoísmo, só se preocupa com o seu interior, querendo fazer valer a sua vontade ao resto do mundo, não se lembrando que o calor da família, ainda é quase tudo na vida!.

…after a comfortable and cozy get-together with part of the family in these mountains, we descended to the ice of the New Jersey plains, once again receiving the warmth of the other part of the family, because unfortunately the human being, living closed to selfishness, only cares about the your inner self, wanting to assert your will to the rest of the world, not remembering that the warmth of family is still almost everything in life!.

…num breve resumo desta viajem das “Christmas de 2024 ao norte”, para lá, passámos pelo estado de Georgia, que se situa a norte do estado da Florida onde presentemente vivemos e a leste do Oceano Atlântico, ainda era madrugada, com um tráfico moderado, o que valeu à nossa dedicada esposa Isaura tirar algumas fotos ao nascer do sol!. 

…in a brief summary of this “Christmas 2024 trip to the north”, there, we passed through the state of Georgia, which is located north of the state of Florida where we currently live and east of the Atlantic Ocean, it was still dawn, with traffic moderate, which meant our dedicated wife Isaura took some photos at sunrise!. 

…entrando e de seguida entrámos no estado da Carolina do Sul, que no século passado experimentou um desenvolvimento económico significativo e onde a Interstate 95 segue por uma distância de aproximadamente 200 milhas e em algumas áreas perto ou com acesso ao Oceano Atlântico!.

…de seguida surge-nos a torre do ”South of the Border”, que é uma atração na Interstate 95,anunciando que entramos no estado de Carolina do Norte, onde a sua primeira evidência de ocupação humana remonta a 10.000 anos!. No entanto hoje, principalmente nas suas áreas metropolitanas, experimentou um aumento constante no crescimento populacional, criando assim um grande desenvolvimento, principalmente nos setores financeiro, bancário e de tecnologia!.

…then we see the “South of the Border” tower, which is an attraction on Interstate 95, announcing that we have entered the state of North Carolina, where the first evidence of human occupation dates back 10,000 years!. However today, especially in its metropolitan areas, it has experienced a constant increase in population growth, thus creating great development, mainly in the financial, banking and technology sectors!.

…e já era no final da tarde quando entrámos no estado da Virgínia onde pernoitámos!. Este estado, faz parte da Planície Atlântica e a Península Média forma a foz da Baía de Chesapeake, tal como a região do sopé das montanhas Blue Ridge, que atravessam as partes oeste e sudoeste do estado!. No fértil Vale do Shenandoah promove os condados agrícolas mais produtivos do estado, enquanto a economia é impulsionada por empresas de tecnologia e agências governamentais federais dos EUA e, temos também de lembrar a Hampton Roads que abriga o principal porto marítimo da região e a Estação Naval de Norfolk, a maior base naval do mundo!. 

…and it was already late afternoon when we entered the state of Virginia where we spent the night!. This state is part of the Atlantic Plain and the Middle Peninsula forms the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, as does the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, which run through the western and southwestern parts of the state!. The fertile Shenandoah Valley boasts the most productive agricultural counties in the state, while the economy is driven by technology companies and US federal government agencies, and we also have to remember Hampton Roads, which is home to the region’s main seaport and Naval Station of Norfolk, the largest naval base in the world!.

…ao outro dia, pela madrugada, atravessando a cidade de Washington, entrámos no estado de Maryland, que é um estado do Meio Atlântico definido por seus abundantes cursos de água e costas na Baía de Chesapeake e no Oceano Atlântico!. A sua maior cidade é Baltimore, (que atravessámos), tem uma longa história como importante porto marítimo!. Fort McHenry, local de nascimento do hino nacional dos EUA, fica na foz do Inner Harbor de Baltimore, onde fica o Aquário Nacional e o Centro de Ciências de Maryland!.

…the other day, at dawn, crossing the city of Washington, we entered the state of Maryland, which is a Mid-Atlantic state defined by its abundant waterways and coasts in the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean!. Its largest city is Baltimore, (which we passed through), it has a long history as an important seaport!. Fort McHenry, birthplace of the US national anthem, is at the mouth of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, home to the National Aquarium and the Maryland Science Center!.
