…São Francisco!. (…San Francisco)!.

…estamos confinados em casa, esperando a nossa vez para tomar a segunda vacina contra o maldito “Coronavírus19”, que nos tornará em potenciais candidatos a um novo rosto da comunidade de imunização, dando assim a nossa contribuição para a saúde pública!. No entanto, com todo este estado de confinação, estamos a correr o risco de gastar algum tempo da nossa vida sem fazer o que gostamos e, isso também nos assusta!.

(…we are confined at home, waiting for our turn to get the second vaccine against the damn “Coronavirus19”, which will make us potential candidates for a new face in the immunization community, thus making our contribution to public health!. However, with all this state of confinement, we are at risk of spending some time of our life without doing what we like, and that scares us too)!.

…é como que, “já tivemos liberdade e agora não temos”, mas  continua a existir dentro de nós um desejo enorme, nem que seja de a comprar, claro, um desejo idiota, porque a liberdade não está à venda e, quando qualquer um de nós se considera um viajante do mundo, como no nosso caso, o tal mundo é a nossa casa, porque em certos momentos, na nossa verdadeira casa, “nos sentimos desconfortáveis por estar confortáveis demais”!.

…enquanto tudo isto acontece vivemos de recordações e, na esperança de num futuro próximo encontrar-mos de novo a aventura pendurada numa corda ao lado de uma montanha!. Até lá, vamos vivendo os obstáculos do dia-a-dia da vida!. Como tal, hoje vamos contar-vos a história de uma maravilhosa viajem pela Califórnia, mais propriamente pela cidade de San Francisco!. Porquê?.

Until then, we are going through the obstacles of daily life!. As such, today we are going to tell you the story of a wonderful trip through California, more specifically through the city of San Francisco!. Because?.

…porque San Francisco é uma das cidades mais ecléticas dos USA, talvez até de todo o mundo!. É o lar de liberais, hippies ou imigrantes, a “Golden Gate”, (aquela grande ponte vermelha), a ilha de Alcatraz, os frutos do mar no Cais dos Pescadores, enfim, um lugar mágico e um dos lugares favoritos para se visitar, pelo menos para nós Europeus, pois as ruas e avenidas da cidade têm declives, ou seja, são a subir ou a descer e, onde passam “eléctricos”, e claro, onde sempre existe algo de novo e empolgante que está acontecendo ao nosso lado!. Cá vai:

(…because San Francisco is one of the most eclectic cities in the USA, perhaps even in the world!. It is home to liberals, hippies or immigrants, the “Golden Gate”, (that big red bridge), the island of Alcatraz, the seafood at Fisherman’s Wharf, in short, a magical place and one of the favorite places to visit, at least for us Europeans, because the streets and avenues of the city have slopes, that is, they are going up or down and, where “trams” pass, and of course, where there is always something new and exciting that is happening to our side!. Here it goes):

…era ao fim de tarde, o carro era um “utilitário” alugado na cidade de Los Angeles, numa agência onde os funcionários vivem nos “Barrios” e, não gostam lá muito dos “Gringos”, fazendo sempre um preço mais em conta às pessoas que falam ou tentam falar o seu idioma!. Seguimos o nosso rumo em direção ao norte, não havia GPS, íamos guiados pelo mapa, quase sempre ao lado do oceano Pacífico, onde no mapa parece tudo muito fácil, no entanto, no terreno com um tráfico intenso e algumas distâncias sem qualquer placa de sinalização, era um pouco mais difícil!. 

(…it was in the late afternoon, the car was a “utility” rented in the city of Los Angeles, at an agency where employees live in the “Barrios” and, they don’t like the “Gringos” there, always making a price more tell people who speak or try to speak your language!. We followed our course towards the north, there was no GPS, we were guided by the map, almost always next to the Pacific Ocean, where on the map everything seems very easy, however, on the ground with intense traffic and some distances without any sign of signaling, it was a little more difficult)!.

…seguíamos pela estrada número 1, a quem também chamam, entre outros nomes “Cabrillo Highway”, (em homenagem ao navegador e explorador Português, João Rodrigues Cabrilho), por esta estrada seguir sempre encostada ao oceano Pacífico, no entanto, próximo da cidade de São Francisco, junta-se a uma outra, que é rápida, e dá pelo nome de Highway 101!. 

(…we were going on road number 1, which they also call, among other names “Cabrillo Highway”, (in honor of the Portuguese navigator and explorer, João Rodrigues Cabrilho), because this road is always close to the Pacific Ocean, however, close from the city of San Francisco, it joins another, which is fast, and calls Highway 101)!.

…próximo da cidade de San Francisco, parámos numa estação de serviço, perguntando qual a maneira mais rápida e funcional de atravessar a ponte “Golden Gate”!. A funcionária, sorrindo, disse-nos, “é para aquele lado, mas nunca lá fui”!. Uma outra simpática senhora ao lado, logo nos disse, “é fácil, quando entrarem na cidade, basta seguir os sinais com desenhos da ponte, que aparecem em quase todas as ruas ou cruzamentos do percurso”!. E logo em seguida, fazendo uns gestos esquisitos com ambos os braços, continuou, “a ponte às vezes balança e treme, que horror!. Vivo em São Francisco há mais de 20 anos e, só atravessei a ponte duas vezes, quando fui visitar uma tia que vive no norte”!. 

(…near the city of San Francisco, we stopped at a service station, asking for the quickest and most functional way to cross the “Golden Gate” bridge!. The employee, smiling, told us, “it is that way, but I never went there”!. Another nice lady at the side, soon told us, “It’s easy, when entering the city, just follow the signs with drawings of the bridge, which appear on almost every street or intersection of the route”!. And immediately afterwards, making strange gestures with both arms, she continued, “the bridge sometimes rocks and trembles, what a horror!. I have lived in San Francisco for more than 20 years and I only crossed the bridge twice, when I went to visit an aunt who lives in the north”)!.

…demorou algum tempo o nosso percurso, mas conseguimos!. Fomos ao outro lado da baía e regressámos, era uma vista agradável, mesmo muito agradável e, na nossa ideia logo ficou a determinação que iríamos fazer de novo este percurso, mas caminhando, ou seja, atravessar a ponte a pé!. Claro, foi precisamente o que fizémos ao outro dia!.

(…our journey took some time, but we did it!. We went to the other side of the bay and came back, it was a pleasant view, even very pleasant and, in our idea, it was soon determined that we would do this route again, but walking, that is, crossing the bridge on foot!. Of course, that’s exactly what we did the other day)!.

…entretanto, procurámos um daqueles motéis onde se dorme e que pela manhã servem um café com um biscoito, que normalmente chamam de “B and B”, (bed and breakfast), que quer dizer mais ou menos, cama e pequeno almoço, que na cidade de São Francisco, pelo menos na zona da parte sul da ponte, próximo da área do Cais dos Pescadores existem muitos!.

(…meanwhile, we looked for one of those motels where you sleep and in the morning serve a coffee with a cookie, which you usually call “B and B”, which means more or less, bed and breakfast, that in the city of São Francisco, at least in the southern part of the bridge, close to the Fisherman’s Wharf area there are many)!.

…aqui, juntámos à nossa informação, uma pequena lista dos principais lugares com interesse na cidade de São Francisco, que é uma cidade onde os espanhóis, por altura do ano de 1776, se estabeleceram numa pequena fortaleza no “Golden Gate”, numa missão chamada “Francisco de Assis” e, nessa pequena lista que entretanto selecionámos, onde a escolha era algo difícil, sempre sobressaía a “Golden Gate Bridge”, o “Fisherman’s Wharf” e o “Chinatown”!.

(…here, we added to our information, a short list of the main places of interest in the city of San Francisco, which is a city where the Spaniards, around 1776, settled in a small fortress in the “Golden Gate”, on a mission called “Francisco de Assis” and, in that short list that we selected in the meantime, where the choice was difficult, the “Golden Gate Bridge”, “Fisherman’s Wharf” and “Chinatown” always stood out)!.

…mas voltando ao pequeno resumo da história da cidade de São Francisco, entre outras, a corrida ao ouro na Califórnia, por volta do ano de 1848, impulsionou a cidade com um período rápido de crescimento, pois a sua população no espaço de um ano cresceu de 1.000 para 25.000 habitantes, tornando-se naquela época a maior cidade da costa oeste dos USA, todavia, algumas dezenas de anos depois, em 1906, três quartos da cidade foi destruída por um terramoto seguido de incêndio, mas foi reconstruída rapidamente com avenidas e ruas já com configuração moderna!.

(…but going back to the small summary of the history of the city of San Francisco, among others, the gold rush in California, around the year 1848, propelled the city with a rapid period of growth, as its population within a year it grew from 1,000 to 25,000 inhabitants, becoming at that time the largest city on the west coast of the USA, however, some tens of years later, in 1906, three quarters of the city was destroyed by an earthquake followed by fire, but it was quickly rebuilt with avenues and streets with a modern configuration)!.

…hoje, é uma cidade muito visitada!. É costume dizer-se, que todos conhecem San Francisco até antes de visitar a cidade, devido às fotos, películas de Hollywood, anúncios de TV e outros meios de comunicação que existem!. Esta cidade, também foi e é protagonista de uma história que merece ser mencionada, pois durante a “Segunda Guerra Mundial”, a cidade de São Francisco foi o porto de embarque para a “Guerra do Pacífico”, e com o fim da guerra, o retorno dos militares, a emigração em massa, atitudes de liberalização e outros factores que levaram ao “Verão do Amor” e ao movimento pelos direitos dos homossexuais, fazendo da cidade de São Francisco um centro de activismo liberal dos USA!.

(…today, it is a very visited city!. It is customary to say that everyone knows San Francisco even before visiting the city, due to the photos, Hollywood films, TV ads and other media that exist!. This city was also and is the protagonist of a story that deserves to be mentioned, because during the “Second World War”, the city of San Francisco was the port of embarkation for the “War of the Pacific”, and with the end of the war, the return of the military, mass emigration, liberalization attitudes and other factors that led to the “Summer of Love” and the movement for the rights of homosexuals, making the city of San Francisco a center of liberal activism in the USA)!.

…continuando, começámos a aventura de atravessar a ponte “Golden Gate” a pé, caminhando, que liga São Francisco à cidade de Sausalito, que fica situada do lado de lá, ao norte, mas dentro da área da baía de São Francisco, onde a ponte termina, sobre o estreito de “Golden Gate” e que é uma das mais conhecidas construções dos USA, considerada uma das sete maravilhas do mundo moderno, cujo comprimento, depende do que nós quisermos medir, mas dizem que o vão principal da suspensão entre as torres é de 1280 metros, o que fez da ponte “Golden Gate” a maior ponte suspensa do mundo, até que a Ponte Verrazano Narrows foi construída em Nova York, no ano de 1964, com um projeto que foi deliberadamente feito 60 metros mais longo para definir esse recorde mundial!.

(…continuing, we started the adventure of crossing the “Golden Gate” bridge on foot, walking, which connects San Francisco to the city of Sausalito, which is located there, to the north, but within the San Francisco Bay area, where the bridge ends, over the “Golden Gate” strait and is one of the best known buildings in the USA, considered one of the seven wonders of the modern world, the length of which depends on what we want to measure, but they say the main span of the suspension between the towers is 1280 meters, which made the “Golden Gate” bridge the longest suspension bridge in the world, until the Verrazano Narrows Bridge was built in New York in 1964, with a project that was deliberately made 60 meters longest to set that world record)!.

…iniciámos a nossa aventura sabendo que as forças da natureza colidem na área da ponte todos os dias, pois estamos quase a 70 metros acima da superfície do Oceano Pacífico e da Baía de São Francisco, bem no meio de uma abertura estreita na escala de uma costa montanhosa, onde a “Golden Gate”, é a única abertura ao nível do mar que leva a milhares de quilómetros quadrados de vales ou montanhas, com o continente e o oceano, onde o calor se refresca durante o dia, que pode mudar a pressão do ar de expansão para contracção, que por sua vez pode causar ventos fortes, onde a atmosfera se ajusta às diferentes pressões de ar da terra e do oceano!. 

(…we started our adventure knowing that the forces of nature collide in the bridge area every day, as we are almost 70 meters above the surface of the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, right in the middle of a narrow opening in the scale of a mountainous coast, where the “Golden Gate” is the only opening at sea level that leads to thousands of square kilometers of valleys or mountains, with the continent and the ocean, where the heat is cooled during the day, which can change the expansion air pressure for contraction, which in turn can cause strong winds, where the atmosphere adjusts to the different air pressures of land and ocean)!.

…também existem marés fortes para dentro e fora da “Golden Gate” área, misturando água fresca dos grandes rios que desaguam na baía, com a água salgada e turbulenta do Oceano Pacífico, que podem ter diferentes temperaturas, assim como o ar acima da água pode ser também de diferentes temperaturas, que causam variações na direcção dos ventos diários, que causam o tradicional nevoeiro, que pode existir por horas ou por alguns minutos, tanto seja pela manhã como pela tarde!. 

(…there are also strong tides in and out of the “Golden Gate” area, mixing fresh water from the great rivers that flow into the bay, with the salty and turbulent water of the Pacific Ocean, which can have different temperatures, as well as the air above of the water can also be of different temperatures, which cause variations in the direction of the daily winds, which cause the traditional fog, which can exist for hours or for a few minutes, either in the morning or in the afternoon)!.

…levávamos equipamento para enfrentar todas estas anomalias, sentindo a brisa na cara, surgindo pela frente, céu azul, nevoeiro, alguns chuviscos, vento e, de novo céu azul, parando aqui e ali, tirando fotos, vendo a cidade ao longe, de diversas posições, tudo isto do lado leste da ponte, que enfrenta a cidade de São Francisco e a Baía, porque na parte oeste em dias de semana é geralmente reservado para as equipas de manutenção!. 

(…we took equipment to face all these anomalies, feeling the breeze on our faces, appearing ahead, blue sky, fog, some drizzle, wind and, again blue sky, stopping here and there, taking pictures, seeing the city from a distance, from different positions, all of this on the east side of the bridge, which faces the city of San Francisco and the Bay, because in the western part on weekdays it is generally reserved for maintenance teams)!.

…também existem duas passagens abaixo do tabuleiro da ponte, uma é um amplo túnel na extremidade sul e a outra é uma passagem estreita no extremo norte, para os caminhantes terem a oportunidade de atravessar entre as duas passagens, dando aos visitantes acesso a grandes oportunidades para fotos dramáticas de ambos os lados da ponte, que como dizíamos antes, com uma vista fabulosa, com vistas para a cidade de São Francisco, para a ilha de Alcatraz e outras áreas da parte leste da Baía, assim como alguns barcos passando, com os golfinhos fugindo na frente!.

…já no regresso, ao meio da ponte, pudemos admirar os cabos gigantescos que descem ao nível do convés, o que nos permite ver o quão grosso são!. Quando passamos ao lado das torres, existe uma pequena curva, produzindo uma “sacada”, para mais pontos de vista e fotos!. O círculo branco ao redor da base da torre da ponte é uma barreira de concreto que desvia as poderosas correntes de maré, e a protege contra os navios que podem, por qualquer razão, ficar fora do seu curso!. E nós, viajantes do mundo, ficamos gratos, gravando na memória um cenário, que nos ficou no pensamento para toda a vida!.

(…on the way back, in the middle of the bridge, we were able to admire the giant cables that descend to the deck level, which allows us to see how thick they are!. When we pass by the towers, there is a small curve, producing a “balcony”, for more views and photos!. The white circle around the base of the bridge tower is a concrete barrier that deflects powerful tidal currents, and protects it against ships that may, for whatever reason, be off course!. And we, the world travelers, are grateful, engraving a scenario in our memory, which has remained in our thoughts for a lifetime)!.

…atravessámos a ponte nas duas direcções, parando por umas horas do lado de lá, onde existe um ponto privilegiado de observação, para repouso e admirar a paisagem!. Só mais um pormenor, a cor da ponte “Golden Gate” é chamada de “laranja internacional”, que não se vende nas lojas, pois é única!.

(…we crossed the bridge in both directions, stopping for a few hours on the other side, where there is a privileged point of observation, to rest and admire the landscape!. Just one more detail, the color of the “Golden Gate” bridge is called “international orange”, which is not sold in stores, as it is unique)!.

…continuando, deixámos a ponte, chegámos ao lado sul da baía de San Francisco e, falando com algumas pessoas que nos acompanharam na travessia da ponte, verificámos que, quando lhes falam no “Fisherman’s Wharf”, que quer dizer mais ou menos Cais dos Pescadores, que é uma zona na cidade junto da sua baía, local onde nos encontrávamos, o seu sentimento é de amor e ódio!.

…queixam-se do gosto duvidoso das suas lojas, que vendem recordações baratas, do preço um pouco acima da média dos seus restaurantes, os museus, que os turistas adoram e dizem que é “novidade”, mas para eles é uma novidade há muito desgastante, os eléctricos sempre cheios de turistas, bloqueando a visão da baía e da ilha de Alcatraz, mas, lá no fundo, no fundo, muito secretamente, eles gostam muito do seu Cais dos Pescadores!.

…e, sempre que algum convidado os visita, de fora da cidade, é uma desculpa perfeita para de uma forma, talvez um pouco cínica, se “forçarem” a si mesmos para irem para essa zona, para terem um bom tempo, evitando as linhas de espera nos museus, mas vestindo uma simples T-shirt, mesmo dizendo em letras muito pequeninas, “Eu sou um estúpido”, e andam por lá, fazendo parte de alguns milhões de visitantes que visitam esta zona por ano, usufruindo de algumas das melhores vistas da cidade, comendo, entre outras iguarias, o caranguejo “Dungeness” fresco, que nós conhecemos pelo nome de “sapateira do pacífico”, mas para nós, o que mais gostámos, foi do ensopado de mexilhões servidos dentro de um pão de massa fermentada!. 

(…and whenever a guest visits them from outside the city, it is a perfect excuse to in a way, perhaps a little cynical, if they “force” themselves to go to that area, to have a good time, avoiding waiting lines in museums, but wearing a simple T-shirt, even saying in very small letters, “I am stupid”, and they walk around, being part of a few million visitors who visit this area every year, enjoying of some of the best views in the city, eating, among other delicacies, the fresh “Dungeness” crab, which we know by the name “shoe crab of the pacific”, but for us, what we liked most, was the stew of mussels served inside a fermented dough bread)!.

…mas ainda não explicámos o que é o “Fisherman’s Wharf”, da cidade de São Francisco!. Simples, é o principal destino turístico desta cidade, mas a sua história é muito mais rica e mais importante do que as atrações típicas de hoje sugerem, onde muitas das teses dos pontos turísticos bem conhecidos, foram desenvolvidos somente nas últimas décadas!.

(…but we haven’t yet explained what “Fisherman’s Wharf” is from San Francisco!. Simple, it is the main tourist destination of this city, but its history is much richer and more important than the typical attractions of today suggest, where many of the theses of the well-known tourist spots, were developed only in the last decades)!.

…este cais, no lado sul da baía de São Francisco, originalmente era conhecido como “Meiggs Wharf”, recebeu as suas características de nome e de vizinhança, desde os primeiros dias da cidade, em meados da década de 1800, para mais tarde, quando os pescadores emigrantes italianos chegaram à cidade pela baía, para tirar proveito do afluxo de população, devido à corrida do ouro, onde um tal Achille Paladini encontrou sucesso com o negócio de peixe grosso local, como proprietário do Paladini Fish Company, onde veio a ser conhecido como o “rei dos peixes”!. 

(…this pier, on the south side of San Francisco Bay, was originally known as “Meiggs Wharf”, has received its name and neighborhood characteristics, since the early days of the city, in the mid-1800s, for more late, when Italian migrant fishermen arrived in the city by the bay, to take advantage of the population influx, due to the gold rush, where one Achille Paladini found success with the local big fish business, as owner of the Paladini Fish Company, where came to be known as the “king of fish”)!.

…este lugar hoje turístico, já foi a principal porta de entrada para São Francisco, sendo nessa época um lugar extremamente laborioso, com mercadoria, principalmente madeira, alimentos, com todos os emigrantes a chegaram aqui, com o caminho de ferro a vir direito à beira da água para carregar os suprimentos de construção para a cidade, que cresceu rapidamente, onde os pescadores trabalhadores, tanto chineses como italianos, muitas vezes acompanhados por suas esposas, aqui se estabeleceram para ganharem a vida na captura de peixe e caranguejo em pequenas embarcações construídas neste mesmo cais!. 

(…this place, nowadays touristic, was once the main gateway to San Francisco, being at that time an extremely laborious place, with merchandise, mainly wood, food, with all emigrants arriving here, with the railway coming straight to at the water’s edge to load construction supplies into the rapidly growing city, where hardworking fishermen, both Chinese and Italians, often accompanied by their wives, settled here to earn a living catching fish and crab on small boats built on this same pier)!.

…hoje é um dos lugares mais famosos da cidade de São Francisco, mesmo uma das atrações mais movimentadas e bem conhecidos turísticamente do oeste dos Estados Unidos, onde entre as muitas atracções, podemos admirar a Doca 39 (Pier 39), onde existe uma colónia de leões do mar (as típicas focas), que se apoderaram de uma grande parte da doca, onde fixaram residência permanente sobre docas de madeira que eram originalmente destinadas aos barcos, desde a Praça de Ghirardelli, até à Doca número 35, sempre encostada à baía, sendo a maior parte da zona, com casas construídas sobre estruturas na água, onde na avenida que passa na sua frente, circulam os típicos “eléctricos”!.

(…today it is one of the most famous places in the city of San Francisco, even one of the busiest and most well-known tourist attractions in the western United States, where among the many attractions, we can admire Dock 39 (Pier 39), where there is a colony of sea lions (the typical seals), which took over a large part of the dock, where they took up permanent residence on wooden docks that were originally intended for boats, from Ghirardelli Square, until Dock number 35, always leaning against the bay, most of the area, with houses built on structures in the water, where on the avenue that passes in front of you, the typical “trams” circulate)!.

…em toda a área existem diversões, como museus, o Aquário da Baía de São Francisco, o submarino da segunda guerra mundial “UUS Pampanito”, restaurantes famosos, que muitas vezes se vêm nas películas de Hollywood, como o Forbes Island Restaurant, o Fisherman’s Grotto, o Joe’s Crab Shack, ou o Bubba Gump Shrimp Company!. O local onde as pessoas se juntam mais é na “Pier 39”, onde além de muitas e variadas diversões, foi onde se filmou algumas cenas do filme de James Bond, “A View to a Kill”, onde num restaurante local se vêm fotos de muitas cenas do filme!.

(…in the whole area there are amusements, such as museums, the San Francisco Bay Aquarium, the WWII submarine “UUS Pampanito”, famous restaurants, which are often seen in Hollywood films, such as the Forbes Island Restaurant , Fisherman’s Grotto, Joe’s Crab Shack, or Bubba Gump Shrimp Company!. The place where people get together most is at “Pier 39”, where in addition to many and varied diversions, it was where some scenes from the James Bond film, “A View to a Kill” were filmed, where pictures are seen in a local restaurant many scenes from the movie)!.

…andando por aqui, também nos podemos única e simplesmente sentar num dos muitos bancos que existem na margem da baía e admirar, mesmo ali, no meio da baía, a ilha de Alcatraz, onde está a casa, longe do que era a sua casa em Chicago, de algumas personagens infames, como por exemplo, Al Capone ou Robert “o Birdman” Stroud, entre outros, tendo sido um monte de coisas desde a sua criação em 1853, incluindo um forte exército dos EUA, uma prisão militar e uma alta penitenciária de segurança, local que visitámos uns dias depois, durante um pequeno cruzeiro pela baía!.

…andámos pela cidade, caminhando ou utilizando os veículos de turismo, onde se compra um bilhete que dá para um certo tempo de utilização, entrando aqui e saindo ali, visitando o famoso bairro Chinatown, que única e simplesmente é a Chinatown mais antiga da América do Norte e o maior enclave chinês fora da Ásia!.
