…nesta um pouco avançada idade, tentamos fugir das cidades ou de alguns lugares que nos parecem antros de porcaria, onde existe lixo, desautorização, falta de respeito ou poluição constante, que nos causa desânimo e desorientação!. Essa é a razão que sempre que surge a oportunidade de viajar, fugimos para o oeste ou para norte, sempre norte e oeste, os nossos lugares de culto, porque o nosso lema é: ”Se isso nos assusta, pode ser uma boa coisa para tentar”!.

…já há alguns anos que procurávamos a aventura de viajar, pela hoje histórica “Route 66”, também conhecida como “Will Rogers Highway”, a “Main Street of America” ou a “Mother Road”, que foi uma das estradas originais no sistema de estradas dos EUA, tornando-se numa das estradas mais famosas, que partia originalmente da  Rua Adams, na cidade de Chicago, estado de Illinois, através dos estados de Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma,Texas, Novo México e Arizona antes de terminar no Cais de  Santa Monica, no Condado de Los Angeles, Califórnia, cobrindo um total de 2.448 milhas (3.940 km)!.

…na cultura popular foi reconhecida pela música, “Get Your Kicks on Route 66”, com um sucesso na época fora do vulgar, cuja letra pode ser lida como um mini-diário de viagem sobre as principais paragens ao longo desta hoje famosa rota, mencionando as passagens pelas várias cidades e vilas e aldeias pelas quais a Rota 66 passa, ou pela série de televisão “Route 66”, que foi ao ar na CBS, desde 1960 a 1964, ou mesmo no clássico romance americano de John Steinbeck, The Grapes of Wrath (As Vinhas da Fúria), porque naquela época, a estrada “Route 66” simbolizava a fuga e a perda!.

Porque, a “Route 66” serviu como rota principal para aqueles que migraram para o oeste, especialmente durante o ‘“Dust Bowl dos anos 30”, que foi um período de severas tempestades de poeira, que danificou muito a ecologia e a agricultura das pradarias americanas e canadenses, causando uma seca severa e uma falha na aplicação de métodos de cultivo de sequeiro, que se prolongou por quase 10 anos em algumas regiões!.

…e, com o movimento dos viajantes, que afinal eram quase todos migrantes forçados que seguiam para o oeste, a estrada sustentava as economias das comunidades pelas quais passava!. As pessoas que faziam negócios ao longo da rota tornaram-se prósperas devido à crescente popularidade da estrada, e essas mesmas pessoas, mais tarde lutaram para manter a estrada viva, diante da crescente ameaça de serem ignoradas pelo novo sistema de Estradas Rápidas interestaduais!.

…para nós, amantes da aventura, a oportunidade surgiu-nos e até a repetimos por duas vezes, onde depois de alguns preparativos, entrámos nesta hoje histórica estrada, na Rua Adams, na cidade de Chicago, no estado de Illinois, começando a percorrer a que é única e simplesmente a estrada mais famosa dos USA, que gerações de viajantes romantizaram, como um símbolo de mobilidade ilimitada e liberdade de circulação e não só!.

(…for us, adventure lovers, the opportunity came to us and we even repeated it twice, where after some preparations, we entered this now historic road, on Adams Street, in the city of Chicago, in the state of Illinois, starting to travel the one that is uniquely and simply the most famous road in the USA, which generations of travelers have romanticized, as a symbol of unlimited mobility and freedom of movement and beyond)!.

…claro, durante a sua história, a ‘Route 66”, sofreu muitas melhorias e realinhamentos ao longo da sua vida útil, mas pouco a pouco, oficialmente e  por volta do ano de 1985, foi removida do Sistema de Estradas dos USA, após ter sido substituída na sua totalidade por segmentos do Sistema de Estradas Rápidas Interestaduais!.

…e hoje é histórica!. Todavia, ainda existem pessoas aventureiras como nós, que apreciam a natureza e adoram viajar por partes desta estrada que, ao passaram pelos estados de Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Novo México, Arizona e Califórnia, viajam pelas tais partes que foram designadas comunalmente como “National Scenic Byway” (Atalhos Cênicos Nacionais), pelo nome “Historic Route 66”, retornando ao seu original nome e reeditando alguns mapas!. Vários estados adotaram secções ignoradas significativas da antiga “Route 66”, colocando-as nas suas redes de estradas estaduais, como o nome de “State Route 66”!.

Na época da sua inauguração, logo se tornou a estrada preferida para oeste, tornando uma nação em movimento, e claro, não era tão longa quanto algumas outras rotas transcontinentais, como a Yellowstone ou a Lincoln Highway, rapidamente ganhando fama como a rota mais curta, onde se podia viajar durante todo o ano entre o Centro-Oeste e a Costa do Pacífico, ao atravessar a lendária paisagem deste país, que é o Sudoeste americano!.

A “Route 66”, era a estrada mais conhecida numa rede nacional de estradas públicas que conseguiu unir uma nação enorme e dispersa num todo coeso, onde durante o seu auge, espelhava o clima desta nação!.

…e, como acima explicámos, veio a “Grande Depressão”, tornando-se no “Caminho de Voo” para as famílias de agricultores que escapavam do “Dust Bowl dos anos 30”, sendo baptizada como “Mother Road” (Estrada Mãe), e carrega esse apelido desde então!. Mesmo esse êxodo monumental foi apenas uma única onda no movimento de massas dos humanos na história desta nação!. Outro foi o movimento pós-Segunda Guerra Mundial de ex-IGs e suas famílias, para ingressar no crescente mercado de trabalho da Califórnia!.

…naquela época, os problemas mecânicos eram muito frequentes na tecnologia de transporte relativamente nova e, é por esse motivo que estes novos alinhamento por onde nós viajámos, passavam por pequenas vilas e aldeias, pois já naquela época a “Route 66” era a estrada mais movimentada, talvez porque a corrida ao álcool estava em pleno andamento, como resultado, estava direccionada para contornar comunidades maiores e mais congestionadas!.

…aqui e ali, surgiam-nos alguns sinais e oportunidade de ver um cenário, que nos mostrava “o folclore do grande corredor de néon”, com placas e murais comerciais da época, alusivas à “Histórica Route 66”, que estavam lá, que nos fazia lembrar a história, como esperando ser descobertos!.

…durante esta nossa viajem até ao estado da Califórnia, houve frio, calor, nevoeiro, céu azul, chuva miudinha ou torrencial, vento normal ou ciclónico, sol temperado ou tórrido, tudo consoante quanto mais nos aproximávamos do oeste e, em muitos troços que estavam descontinuados, tentando viajar por eles, encontrámos algum pó, lama e pequenas pontes improvisadas!. Muitas comunidades, mantêm pelo menos na área por onde a estrada passa, muito “folclore” alusivo à histórica estrada, tornando-a numa viajem emocionante de peregrinação, onde se pode descobrir o desconhecido e experimentar o incomum, pois a “Route 66”, é sinônimo de diversão e aventura!.

(…during our trip to the state of California, there was cold, heat, fog, blue skies, small or torrential rain, normal or cyclonic wind, temperate or scorching sun, depending on how far we got closer to the west and, in many sections were discontinued, trying to travel through them, we found some dust, mud and small makeshift bridges! Many communities maintain, at least in the area where the road passes, a lot of “folklore” alluding to the historic road, making it an exciting pilgrimage journey, where you can discover the unknown and experience the unusual, as “Route 66”, is synonymous with fun and adventure)!.

…foi uma estrada construída sobre Trilhas Antigas, traçadas pelos primeiros exploradores, tornando-se na versão do século XX da Trilha do Oregon, o caminho de ouro para a terra prometida, como a de St. Louis, Missouri, a Las Vegas, Novo México, que era a rota principal da rede Ozark Trails, ou da a estrada Postal de Fort Smith, Arkansas, até Amarillo, Texas!. No entanto para nós, amantes da natureza, não importa como nasceu, tivémos um passeio nostálgico e, em certas ocasiões viajando por aqui, sem o notar, sentimos a idade de ouro desta estrada sussurrar para nós através de sinais de néon coloridos, motéis pitorescos, cinemas drive-in e pequenas cidades amigáveis!.

(…was a road built on Ancient Trails, drawn by early explorers, becoming the 20th century version of the Oregon Trail, the golden path to the promised land, like St. Louis, Missouri, to Las Vegas , New Mexico, which was the main route of the Ozark Trails network, or the Postal Road from Fort Smith, Arkansas, to Amarillo, Texas!. However for us nature lovers, no matter how you were born, we had a nostalgic ride and, on occasions traveling here, without noticing it, we felt the golden age of this road whisper to us through colorful neon signs, picturesque motels , drive-in cinemas and friendly small towns)!.

…em alguns dias, seguíamos ouvindo música na rádio da nossa “White Fox” (caravana), bebendo café, comendo biscoitos ou fruta, lembrando aquela famíla que nos anos trinta do século passado, para se prepararem para a sua viagem até à Califórnia, meteram tudo da sua quinta num calhambeque de 50 dólares, matando os seus dois últimos porcos para fazer um barril de carne de porco salgada, para alimentar as 14 pessoas a bordo do seu calhambeque!.

(…in a few days, we continued listening to music on the radio from our “White Fox” (caravan), drinking coffee, eating cookies or fruit, remembering that family that in the thirties of the last century, to prepare for their trip to California, they put everything from their farm in a $50 clunker, killing their last two pigs to make a barrel of salt pork, to feed the 14 people aboard their clunker)!.

…atravessámos alguns trechos de estrada meio prósperos e meio abandonados, que nos contavam parte da história da vila ou cidade, os seus dias de negócios, os seus dias de declínio ou os seus dias de avivamento, que nos parecia crescente!.

…depois de passar pelo Meio Oeste e pelas Grandes Planícies do Sul e Oeste, cruzámos as montanhas negras de Mohave, que era a única maneira de chegar à aldeia de Oatman, e vimos os burros selvagens, que são os descendentes de burros trazidos para aqui pelos primeiros mineiros de ouro nos anos de 1800, que quando os mineiros desanimados com a sua prospecção, deixaram a aldeia e foram soltos e abandonados!.

…a aldeia de Oatman é um antigo lugar de mineração, onde os viajantes em tempos usaram a hoje Histórica Estrada 66, localizada numa elevação de 2700 ft / 896m, começando como um acampamento de barracas, logo depois que dois prospectors encontraram um achado de ouro de $10 milhões por volta do ano de 1915, embora a área tivesse sido estabelecida já por alguns anos!.

…atravessámos o deserto de Mojave, com temperaturas altas, entre 100 ou 110 graus, viajando com alguma lentidão na linha da direita, saindo num qualquer desvio sempre que era possível, chegando finalmente em frente ao Oceano Pacífico, caminhando pelo Cais de Santa Monica, tirando fotos, alegrando-nos por termos terminado esta aventura de cruzar o território dos USA, do Leste ao Oeste, do Atlântico ao Pacífico!.

(…we crossed the Mojave desert, with high temperatures, between 100 or 110 degrees, traveling with some slowness on the right line, taking any detour whenever possible, finally arriving in front of the Pacific Ocean, walking along the Santa Monica Pier, taking pictures, rejoicing that we have finished this adventure of crossing the US territory, from East to West, from the Atlantic to the Pacific)!.

…viajando pela famosa “Estrada 66”, na nossa “White Fox” (caravana), vendo a dificuldade que os nossos avós tiveram no passado ao viajar nesta estrada, acampando e comendo aqui e ali, apreciando montanhas e rios, animais e paisagens exóticas, vendo pessoas diferentes, amáveis aqui e menos amáveis acolá, alguma chuva e vento, outras vezes céu azul e sol radiante, mas sempre na esperança de chegar e ver o Oceano Pacífico!.

…e, nunca esqueceremos que tivémos a felicidade de ver todo este cenário porque éramos viajantes da hoje “Histórica Route 66”, apreciadores da principal rota leste-oeste de Chicago a Los Angeles, porque viajar por esta famosa estrada, é como dar um passo atrás para um tempo mais simples, lembrando a hoje “Histórica Route 66”, despida das suas placas e removida dos mapas das estradas, que vai renascendo, quando parecia destinada a tornar-se uma nota de rodapé esquecida na história, onde quase 2.500 milhas de calçada, o grande corredor de néon, estava desbotado, menos percorrido e, em alguns lugares, mais difícil de encontrar, mas ainda está lá, esperando ser redescoberto!.

(…and, we will never forget that we were fortunate to see all this scenery because we were travelers of today’s “Historic Route 66”, lovers of the main east-west route from Chicago to Los Angeles, because traveling along this famous road is like taking a step back to a simpler time, reminiscent of today’s “Historical Route 66”, stripped of its license plates and removed from road maps, which is reborn when it seemed destined to become a forgotten footnote in history, where nearly 2,500 miles by the sidewalk, the great neon corridor was faded, less traveled and, in places, harder to find, but it’s still there, waiting to be rediscovered)!.

…a hoje “Histórica Route 66”, incorpora a cultura da aventura, mostrando-nos o cenário dos espaços abertos oferecidos pelo oeste americano, numa rota que serpenteia através das partes mais românticas e célebres desse mesmo oeste, conectando as pequenas vilas e aldeias do centro-oeste com as da Costa do Oceano Pacífico e que, em outra época deu esperança aos migrantes que iam a caminho do oeste, para encontrar uma nova vida, definindo uma geração em busca de aventura e liberdade!.
