Terra Nova e Labrador, Canada!. (Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada)!.

…nesta aventura rumo ao norte, não seguimos o mapa do tesouro, do pirata da perna de pau, do papagaio falante, seguimos sim, um mapa moderno, na esperança de ver o cenário que os nossos avós viveram naqueles anos distantes, em que se aventuraram na pesca do peixe bacalhau, lá na gelada região da Terra Nova e do Labrador, Canada!. 

…in this adventure heading north, we don’t follow the treasure map, the peg-legged pirate, the talking parrot, we follow a modern map, hoping to see the scenery that our grandparents lived in those distant years, when they ventured out fishing for cod fish, there in the freezing region ofNewfoundland and Labrador, Canada!. 

…e, embarcando no navio Highlanders, na cidade portuária de Sydney, na Ilha Cape Breton, na província de Nova Escócia, que é uma das províncias marítimas do leste do Canadá no Oceano Atlântico, parecia que navegámos tal como qualquer famoso pirata das histórias, que viveram durante a Era de Ouro da Pirataria, sobre as águas do Golfo de São Lourenço, que é a saída dos Grandes Lagos da América do Norte através do Rio São Lourenço para o Oceano Atlântico!. 

…and, boarding the ship Highlanders,in the port city of Sydney, on Cape Breton Island, in the province of Nova Scotia, which is one of the maritime provinces of eastern Canadain the Atlantic Ocean, it seemed that we sailed just like any famous pirate in history, who lived during the Golden Age of Piracy, over the waters of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, which is the exit of the Great Lakes of North America through the Saint Lawrence River into the Atlantic Ocean!.

…nós no 9.º andar e a nossa “White Fox” (caravana) no 3.º andar daquele navio que, derivado ao nevoeiro no canal, apitava periodicamente um som forte e lento, não sabemos se arrogante ou de súplica, mas o certo é que, muitas, mesmo muitas horas depois, o nevoeiro ia desaparecendo e já havia terra à vista!.

…we were on the 9th floor and our “White Fox” (caravan) on the 3rd floor of that ship which, due to the fog in the channel, periodically beeped a strong and slow sound, we don’t know if it was arrogant or pleading, but the truth is that, many, even many hours later, the fog was disappearing and land was already in sight!.

…estávamos no porto de Channel-Port aux Basques, cujo cenário nos fazia lembrar as tais aldeias que eram saqueadas pelos já referidos piratas!. No entanto não, não vimos nenhuma dessas personagens, com uma perna de pau, correndo aos saltos, atrás de alguma jovem aldeã, levando uma grande espada numa mão e na outra uma extravagante garrafa de qualquer licor,  que normalmente era “rum” de fraca qualidade!.

…we were in the port of Channel-Port aux Basques,whose scenery reminded us of the villages that were plundered by the aforementioned pirates!. However, no, we didn’t see any of these characters, with one peg leg, running in leaps and bounds, after some young village girl, carrying a large sword in one hand and in the other an extravagant bottle of some kind of liquor, which was usually low-quality “rum”!

…o desembarque foi feito normalmente, saindo para terra, conduzindo a nossa “White Fox” (caravana)!. Finalmente estávamos na província de Terra Nova e Labrador, que é a província mais oriental do Canadá, situada na região atlântica do país, que compreende a ilha de Terra Nova e o continente de Labrador a noroeste e…, no nosso percurso, fomos parando aqui e ali, apreciando um cenário de pequenas aldeias piscatórias, muito parecido com os cenários que normalmente vimos nos parques ou filmes do Walt Disney!. 

…the disembarkation was done normally, leaving for land, driving our “White Fox” (caravan)!. Finally we were in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador,which is the easternmost province of Canada,located in the Atlantic region of the country, which comprises the island of Newfoundland and the continent of Labrador to the northwest and…, on our route, we stopped here and there, enjoying a scenery of small fishing villages, very similar to the scenes we normally saw in Walt Disney parks or films!. 

…e bendizendo a oportunidade de poder visitar esta província, onde se podia apreciar um estilo de vida documental, diferente, levando para aqui espectadores dos quatro cantos do nosso planeta, para descobrir e aprender sobre todos os tipos de peixes exóticos e misteriosos, culturas, num cenário com belas paisagens e pessoas diferentes, que abrem as portas para suas vidas e compartilham as suas histórias com os visitantes!.

…and blessing the opportunity to visit this province, where one could enjoy a different, documentary lifestyle, taking viewers from the four corners of our planet here, to discover and learn about all types of exotic and mysterious fish, cultures, in a setting with beautiful landscapes and different people, who open the doors to their lives and share their stories with visitors!.

…íamos percorrendo o nosso percurso, até que chegamos à área da aldeia de “Portugal Cove”, que é uma comunidade de litoral rural, localizada na Baía de Concepção, sendo o local de um terminal de pequenos navios que fornece acesso diário de e para a Ilha de Bel, e nós e…, nunca esquecendo a relação dos portugueses com a Terra Nova, que é secular e carrega consigo muitas memórias de aventuras da faina da pesca do bacalhau, pois a história diz-nos que estas terras nunca foram colonizadas por Portugal, apesar das várias viagens de exploração realizadas a estes águas e territórios, talvez impedidos por corsários de outras nações com maior potência militar!.

…we were following our route, until we arrived at the area of the village of “Portugal Cove”,which is a rural coastal community, located in Conceição Bay,being the location of a small ship terminal that provides daily access to and from Bel Island,and we and…, never forgetting the Portuguese relationship with Newfoundland,which is centuries old and carries with it many memories of adventures in cod fishing, as history tells us that these lands were never colonized by Portugal, despite several exploration trips made to these waters and territories, perhaps prevented by privateers from other nations with greater military power!.

…e também sendo nós oriundos de Portugal, parámos para visitar com mais pormenor esta aldeia que dá pelo nome de “Portugal Cove”!. Sim “Portugal Cove” e porquê este nome?. Talvez porque no século XV ou princípios do século XVI, os portugueses daquele tempo, chamavam mesmo à área da Terra Nova, a Terra dos Bacalhaus ou Terra dos Corte Reais!. Mais tarde, por volta dos anos de 1850, em Portugal, uma empreza da cidade de Lisboa chegou a mandar para os bancos pesqueiros da Terra Nova, 19 veleiros, com um total de aproximadamente 325 homens!. 

…and also as we come from Portugal, we stopped to visit in more detail this village called “Portugal Cove”!.Yes “Portugal Cove”and why this name?. Maybe because in the 15th century or early 16th century, the Portuguese at that time even called the Terra Nova area the Land of Bacalhaus or Land of Corte Reais!. Later, around the 1850s, inPortugal,a company from the city of Lisbon sent 19 sailboats to the fishing banks of Newfoundland, with a total of approximately 325 men!. 

…andámos por aqui e falando com alguns habitantes, ficavam admirados ao dizermos que éramos de descendência portuguesa  e iam descrevendo aquilo que sabiam, que o lema da aldeia é “onde o sol encontra o mar’!. Este lema é irónico, já que devido ao posicionamento da Ilha de Bell, na baía, o sol poente nunca encontra o mar a qualquer momento, mas é o seu lema, vai lá saber-se porquê!.

…we walked around and spoke to some inhabitants, they were surprised when we said that we were of Portuguese descent and they described what they knew, that the village’s motto is “where the sun meets the sea”! This motto is ironic, since due to the positioning of Bell Island,in the bay, the setting sun never meets the sea at any time, but it is their motto, let’s find out why!.

…também nos disseram que “Portugal Cove” é uma comunidade onde existem pequenas quintas, lojas de conveniência, restaurantes ou cafés, lojas de artigos de construção, centros de jardinagem, salões de beleza, garagens e estações de serviço, um serviço de táxi e algumas casas que dão dormida e pequeno almoço, o que já não é pouco!. 

…we were also told that “Portugal Cove” is a community where there are small farms, convenience stores, restaurants or cafes, home improvement stores, garden centers, beauty salons, garages and service stations, a taxi service and some houses that provide overnight accommodation and breakfast, which is no small feat! 

…na história, a comunidade é uma das mais antigas da Terra Nova, com uma história muito rica, fundada pelos portugueses e, foi uma das primeiras aldeias estabelecidas no novo mundo!. Tem sido históricamente católica romana, sendo servida pela Igreja do Santo Rosário!. Foi o local da primeira estrada construída fora da capital St. John’s!.

…in history, the community is one of the oldest in Newfoundland,with a very rich history, founded by the Portuguese and was one of the first villages established in the new world!. It has historically been Roman Catholic, being served by theChurch of the Holy Rosary!. It was the site of the first road built outside the capital St. John’s!.

…a hoje Enseada de Portugal, tem um grande corpo de tradições folclóricas, pois dizem-nos que a área, já habitada, foi atacada e queimada pelos franceses, no distante ano de 1697 e, foi aqui que a lenda da Lula Gigante ou Kraken, (legendário monstro do mar, parecendo a figura de uma lula gigante), foi descoberta e documentada!. Depois, o nome de Enseada de Portugal, foi dado pelos pescadores Portugueses, por volta do século 17, no entanto outros povos por aqui viveram como pescadores oriundos do oeste da Inglaterra, da Irlanda ou das Ilhas do Canal, como por exemplo Jersey!.

…today Cove of Portugal,has a large body of folklore traditions, as we are told that the area, already inhabited, was attacked and burned by the French, in the distant year of 1697 and, it was here that the legend of the Giant Squid or Kraken, (legendary sea monster, resembling the figure of a giant squid), was discovered and documented!. Afterwards, the name Portugal Cove was given by Portuguese fishermen, around the 17th century, however other people here lived as fishermen from the west of England, Ireland or the Channel Islands, such as Jersey!.

…e também nos informaram que existe outro local com o nome de Enseada de Portugal do Sul, que posteriormente visitámos!. Uma curiosidade, quando pronunciam o nome Portugal, dizem com sotaque de voz em Português!.

…and they also informed us that there is another place called South Portugal Cove, which we later visited!. Interestingly, when they pronounce the name Portugal,they say it with an accent in Portuguese!

…Icefields Parkway, Alberta, Canada!.

…chegamos à província de Alberta, Canadá, que possui duas grandes cidades, uma é Calgary, a maior cidade e a capital financeira, e a outra, que é Edmonton, a capital política e também industrial!.Alberta possui uma das economias mais fortes e influentes do Canadá, onde as suas quintas abastecem todo o país!. Em outras palavras…, dizem que é a província de Alberta que dá de comer ao Canadá!.

…we arrived in the province of Alberta, Canada, which has two large cities, one is Calgary, the largest city and the financial capital, and the other, which is Edmonton, the political and industrial capital!. Alberta has one of the strongest and most influential economies in Canada, where its farms supply the entire country!. In other words…, they say that it is the province of Alberta that feeds Canada!.

…e nós, pela manhã com um “frio de rachar”, continuámos a nossa rota em direcção ao norte, pela estrada #2, onde íamos cumprindo as novas regras de velocidade, que é de 100 km/h (62 mph), e em áreas urbanas varia de 50 km/h (31 mph) a 100 km/h (62 mph), e já viajando na estrada rápida #1, parámos nos arredores da cidade de Calgary para comprar alguns géneros alimentícios e gasolina, que também se vende ao litro!. 

…and we, in the morning with a “bitter cold”, continued our route towards the north, along road #2, where we were complying with the new speed rules, which are 100 km/h (62 mph), and in urban areas it varies from 50 km/h (31 mph) to 100 km/h (62 mph), and already traveling on fast highway #1, we stopped on the outskirts of the city of Calgary to buy some food and gasoline, which was also sells by the liter!. 

…todavia, o nosso destino era chegar ao “Banff Nacional Parque” na região das “Rocky Mountains”, que é considerada uma reserva de biosfera!. Assim, rumo ao oeste e viajando na Alberta Provincial Highway 1, que normalmente é referida como Highway 1 e é uma grande estrada leste-oeste no sul da província de Alberta, que forma parte do Trans-Canada Highway, chegamos a Banff, entrando no “Parque Nacional Rocky Mountains”, onde nos ofereceram um passaporte para percorrer todos os Parques Nacionais do Canada durante a nossa visita a este lindo e, para nós acolhedor País!.

…however, our destination was to reach “Banff National Park” in the “Rocky Mountains” region, which is considered a biosphere reserve!. So, heading west and traveling on Alberta Provincial Highway 1, which is normally referred to as Highway 1 and is a large east-west road in the south of the province of Alberta, which forms part of the Trans-Canada Highway, we arrived in Banff, entering the “Rocky Mountains National Park”, where we were offered a passport to tour all of Canada’s National Parks during our visit to this beautiful and, for us, welcoming country!.

…e continuando rumo ao norte, agora na estrada número 93, que também lhe chamam “Banff-Windermere Parkway” ou “Icefields Parkway”, onde depois de qualquer curva nos aparece um cenário em que temos de parar a nossa “White Fox” (caravana), admirar e tirar fotos, porque não é só o cenário de montanha, são os Glaciers, os lagos, a neve sobre as rochas, em alguns lugares entrando na água cristalina, as  florestas ou os animais selvagens que nos aparecem constantemente!. Enfim, se pensamos demorar 4 horas para atravessar esta estrada, nem em 8 horas se consegue ver o mínimo!.

…and continuing towards the north, now on road number 93, which is also called “Banff-Windermere Parkway” or “Icefields Parkway”, where after any curve a scene appears in which we have to stop our “White Fox” (caravan), admire and take photos, because it’s not just the mountain scenery, it’s the Glaciers, the lakes, the snow on the rocks, in some places entering the crystal clear water, the forests or the wild animals that constantly appear to us!. Anyway, if we think it will take 4 hours to cross this road, you won’t even be able to see the slightest in 8 hours!

…uma das nossas paragens foi em Lago Louise, a quem deram o nome, em homenagem à princesa Louise Caroline Alberta, a quarta filha da rainha Victoria!. Era assim no passado, tudo o que era importante, levava o nome de reis, rainhas, princesas ou duques!. No entanto, a aldeia era originalmente chamada Laggan, e era uma das várias estações que existem ao longo da rota do “Canadian Railway do Pacífico”!. 

…one of our stops was at Lake Louise, which they named after Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, the fourth daughter of Queen Victoria!. It was like that in the past, everything that was important was named after kings, queens, princesses or dukes! However, the village was originally called Laggan, and was one of several stations that exist along the route of the Canadian Pacific Railway. 

…mas voltando ao Lago Louise, é um dos lagos mais visitados do mundo!. A seu lado está o emblemático hotel  Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, que é património Mundial da UNESCO e que normalmente aparece em fotos, no cinema, na televisão, revistas ou em livros de romance, sempre rodeado por algumas montanhas, onde se destaca o Victoria Glacier, e claro, o já citado lago com cor esmeralda, cintilante e também majestoso!.  

…but back to Lake Louise, it is one of the most visited lakes in the world!. Next to it is the emblematic Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise hotel, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and which normally appears in photos, cinema, television, magazines or romance books, always surrounded by some mountains, where the Victoria Glacier stands out. , and of course, the aforementioned emerald-colored lake, sparkling and also majestic!.

…também passámos pelo Lago Moraine, que fica localizado a algumas  milhas do Lago Louise, que nos oferece uma vista panorâmica do Vale dos Dez Picos!. Esta cena foi retratada no verso das notas de 20 dólares do Canadá, na série de 1969-1979 “Scenes of Canada”!.

…we also passed Moraine Lake, which is located a few miles from Lake Louise, which offers a panoramic view of the Valley of the Ten Peaks!. This scene was depicted on the back of Canadian $20 bills in the 1969-1979 series “Scenes of Canada”!

…seguindo sempre em direção ao norte, através duma região com um cenário de  montanha, onde as florestas são dominadas pelo pinheiro em altitudes mais baixas, com lagos e riachos correndo revoltosos aqui e ali e, se olhar-mos para cima da linha das árvores, admiramos principalmente rochas e gelo, que lá devem de estar talvez à milhares de anos!. 

…heading ever northwards, through a region with mountain scenery, where the forests are dominated by pine at lower altitudes, with lakes and streams running wildly here and there, and if we look up the line From the trees, we admire mainly rocks and ice, which must have been there for perhaps thousands of years!. 

…é constante o aparecimento de mamíferos como o urso pardo, o puma, o alce ou o carneiro selvagem, além de centenas de espécies de aves, que vivem por aqui, naquelas montanhas formadas a partir de rochas sedimentares que foram empurradas para o leste por estratos rochosos mais recentes, entre 80 e 55 milhões de anos atrás, pois talvez nos últimos milhões de anos, as geleiras cobriram a maior parte do parque, mas hoje são encontradas apenas nas encostas das montanhas, embora incluam o “Columbia Icefield”, a maior massa glacial ininterrupta das Montanhas Rochosas, onde a erosão da água e do gelo esculpiu as montanhas nas suas formas atuais!.

…the appearance of mammals such as the brown bear, the puma, the elk or the wild sheep is constant, as well as hundreds of species of birds, which live here, in those mountains formed from sedimentary rocks that were pushed into the east by more recent rock strata, between 80 and 55 million years ago, as perhaps in the last few million years, glaciers covered most of the park, but today they are found only on the mountainsides, although they include the “Columbia Icefield.” , the largest uninterrupted glacial mass in the Rocky Mountains, where water and ice erosion sculpted the mountains into their current forms!.

…continuando, dizem-nos, de que em Julho ou Agosto, mais de 100,000 veículos circulam por esta estrada em cada mês, pois a estrada 93, é uma estrada com duas vias, uma em cada sentido, dividida ao meio por aquelas marcas amarelas, que quase todos os condutores conhecem mas, de tantos em tantos quilómetros, tem pistas de passagem ocasionais!. Isto  minimiza o atraso nas viaturas que rolam mais devagar para os seus ocupantes apreciarem melhor o cenário!. Já nos esquecíamos de vos dizer que quando virem muitos veículos parados na berma da estrada, é certo que estão apreciando algum animal selvagem, que resolveu atravessar a sua estrada, pois o local é deles, ou então resolveu vir “mostrar-se”!.

This minimizes delay in vehicles that move slower so that their occupants can better appreciate the scenery! We already forgot to tell you that when you see many vehicles stopped on the side of the road, it is certain that they are enjoying some wild animal, which decided to cross your road, as the place is theirs, or else it decided to come and “show itself”!. 

…wow, wow, wow,… tanta história da natureza para ainda hoje se poder admirar!.

…continuando, ainda com algum cenário de montanha, entrámos na estrada rápida #16, que acompanha de perto o caminho para norte do país, no mesmo alinhamento da “Canadian National Railway”, que nos levou até perto da cidade de Hinton, ainda na província de Alberta, onde pernoitámos num parque de RV!.

…Interstate 70 no estado do Colorado!. (…Interstate 70 in the state of Colorado)!.

…viajar num corredor de montanha, através do Interstate 70, no estado do Colorado, que pode ir desde as comunidades de Fruita, Grand Junction ou Palisade, até à cidade de Denver, é muito mais do que apenas uma viagem de um lugar para outro!. Realizá-la é…, acima de qualquer dúvida, uma excelente experiência!. Este trecho de estrada é de tirar o fôlego!. Oferece-nos um dos passeios mais belos dos USA e…, é muito mais do que apenas uma bela rota!.

…traveling in a mountain corridor, through Interstate 70, in the state of Colorado, which can go from the communities of Fruita, Grand Junction or Palisade, to the city of Denver, is much more than just a trip from one place to another!. Carrying it out is…, beyond any doubt, an excellent experience! This stretch of road is breathtaking! It offers us one of the most beautiful walks in the USA and…, it is much more than just a beautiful route!.

…nós veteranos, consideramo-nos uns privilegiados porque já tivemos a felicidade de fazer esta viajem e…, estrategicamente ou não, depois de por simples acaso ter parado para pernoitar num parque de RV na cidade de Fruita, no estado do Colorado!.

…we veterans, consider ourselves privileged because we have already had the good fortune to make this trip and…, strategically or not, after by simple chance having stopped to spend the night in an RV park in the city of Fruita, in the state of Colorado!.

…e claro, estando na área, aproveitámos a oportunidade para subir a montanha e visitar o Parque do Monumento Nacional do Colorado, que foi estabelecido pela primeira vez no ano de 1911 e apresenta desfiladeiros com paredes íngremes e formações rochosas únicas!.

…and of course, being in the area, we took the opportunity to climb the mountain and visit Colorado National Monument Park, which was first established in 1911 and features steep-walled canyons and unique rock formations!. 

…tal como no parque de RV onde pernoitamos nos informaram, o  parque é melhor sendo avistado durante uma viagem pela “Rim Rock Drive” (estrada), que serpenteia ao longo da encosta do planalto onde se situa numa área desértica no alto do planalto do Colorado, com florestas de pinheiros e zimbro!.

.…just like the RV park where we stayed the night, we were told, the park is best seen while traveling along the “Rim Rock Drive”, which winds along the slope of the plateau where it is located in a desert area high on the Colorado plateau, with pine and juniper forests!..

…além das vistas deslumbrantes da natureza, este parque abriga uma grande variedade de vida selvagem, incluindo falcões de cauda vermelha, águias douradas, corvos, gaios, carneiros selvagens do deserto e coiotes, onde se pode fazer caminhadas panorâmicas que serpenteiam ao longo do planalto!.

…in addition to stunning views of nature, this park is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including red-tailed hawks, golden eagles, ravens, jays, desert bighorn sheep and coyotes, where you can take scenic hikes that meander along the plateau!.

…uma curiosidade!. Um rebanho de bisões foi introduzido e mantido de 1925 a 1983, depois de uma tentativa fracassada de introduzir alces, no entanto, o  rebanho cresceu para até 45 animais, mas geralmente o rebanho era mantido em cerca de 20-25 animais, numa área de 20.500 acres (32 milhas quadradas) que agora é o Monumento Nacional do Colorado que abrange seis desfiladeiros, cada um com falésias distintas e monólitos de arenito!.

…a curiosity!. A herd of bison was introduced and maintained from 1925 to 1983, after a failed attempt to introduce elk, however, the herd grew to up to 45 animals, but generally the herd was maintained at around 20-25 animals, in a 20,500-acre (32 square mile) area that is now the Colorado National Monument encompassing six canyons, each with distinctive cliffs and monoliths of sandstone!.

…voltamos à Interstate 70!. Ainda no oeste, esta estrada passa por um terreno árido e acidentado do vale do Rio Colorado, onde existem algumas cidades notáveis ​​e já mencionadas ao longo do seu percurso, que segue de perto o Rio Colorado e serve como uma importante rota de acesso para áreas como o também já mencionado Monumento Nacional do Colorado!.

…we’re back on Interstate 70!. Still in the west, this road passes through the arid and rugged terrain of the Colorado River valley, where there are some notable and already mentioned cities along its route, which closely follows the Colorado River and serves as an important access route to areas such as the also already mentioned Colorado National Monument!.

…e nós, agora viajando para leste por esta estrada, que nos ia mostrando lindos cenários que iam passando por elevações que chegavam a 11.000 pés ou…, umas tantas milhas à frente, seguia paralela ao Rio Colorado ou à antiga linha principal da Ferrovia Ocidental de Denver e Rio Grande (agora Union Pacific)!.

…and we, now traveling east along this road, which showed us beautiful scenery that passed through elevations that reached 11,000 feet or…, a few miles ahead, ran parallel to the Colorado River or the old main line of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad (now the Union Pacific)!.

…também íamos passando por vários túneis, construídos para traçar a estrada através das Montanhas Rochosas!. Este projecto de túneis apresenta uma parede lateral curva, incomum em túneis nos USA, onde a maioria dos túneis apresenta um tecto curvo e paredes laterais planas!. Os engenheiros pegaram emprestado um projeto europeu para dar maior resistência ao túnel!. 

…we were also passing through several tunnels, built to trace the road through the Rocky Mountains!. This tunnel design features a curved sidewall, unusual in tunnels in the USA, where most tunnels feature a curved roof and flat sidewalls!. The engineers borrowed a European project to give the tunnel greater resistance!.

…we are told that the federal and state transportation departments praised the engineering achievements necessary to build this road through a narrow gorge while preserving its natural beauty!

…existe mesmo uma seção de aproximadamente 19 km de estrada que apresenta o Túnel Sem Nome, o Túnel do Lago Suspenso, o Túnel de Curva Reversa, 40 pontes e viadutos e quilómetros de muros de contenção!.

…there is even an approximately 19 km section of road that features the Nameless Tunnel, the Hanging Lake Tunnel, the Reverse Curve Tunnel, 40 bridges and viaducts and kilometers of retaining walls!.

…em alguns túneis, como o Eisenhower-Johnson, não é permitido parar, mas passar por esse sistema de túneis de 2,6 quilómetros de extensão é bastante espetacular por si só, alguns atingindo uma altitude máxima de 11.158 pés!. Esses túneis estão entre os túneis veiculares mais altos do mundo, sendo também o ponto mais alto do sistema interestadual dos USA!.

…in some tunnels, like the Eisenhower-Johnson, stopping is not permitted, but passing through this 1.6-mile-long tunnel system is quite spectacular in itself, some reaching a maximum altitude of 11,158 feet!. These tunnels are among the tallest vehicular tunnels in the world, and are also the highest point on the US interstate system!

…tudo através de uma parte significativa do desfiladeiro, onde as pistas no sentido leste estendem-se em balanço sobre o Rio Colorado e as pistas no sentido oeste são suspensas em um viaduto vários metros acima do fundo do desfiladeiro, e ao longo deste percurso, a estrada abraça a margem norte do Rio Colorado, enquanto o Corredor Central da Ferrovia Union Pacific (antiga Ferrovia Oeste de Denver e Rio Grande) ocupa a margem sul!.

…all through a significant portion of the canyon, where the eastbound lanes cantilever over the Colorado River and the westbound lanes are suspended from an overpass several feet above the canyon floor, and along this route, the road hugs the north bank of the Colorado River, while the Central Corridor of the Union Pacific Railroad (formerly the Denver and Rio Grande West Railroad) occupies the south bank!.

…à medida que continuávamos para o leste, subindo nas Montanhas Rochosas, passámos pelas principais cidades de esqui como Vail, Avon ou Frisco, onde a estrada cruza a Continental Divide através do Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel, que, com mais de 11.000 pés de altitude, e como já mencionámos anteriormente, é um dos túneis de veículos mais altos do mundo!.

…as we continued east, climbing into the Rocky Mountains, we passed major ski towns like Vail, Avon or Frisco, where the road crosses the Continental Divide through the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel, which, at over 11,000 feet in elevation, and as we previously mentioned, is one of the highest vehicle tunnels in the world!.

…parámos para nos abastecer de gasolina, água e biscoitos, na cidade de Georgetown, onde nos disseram que ainda lá existe uma das viagens de trem mais pitorescas do país, numa ferrovia de bitola estreita  e que foi uma das primeiras atrações turísticas do estado, viajando entre Georgetown e o antigo campo de mineração de prata de Silver Plume!.

…we stopped to stock up on gasoline, water and biscuits, in the city of Georgetown, where we were told that there is still one of the most picturesque train journeys in the country, on a narrow gauge railway and that it was one of the first tourist attractions in the state, traveling between Georgetown and the old silver mining camp of Silver Plume!.

…toda esta região é conhecida por declives íngremes, condições climáticas em rápida mudança e fortes nevascas no inverno, exigindo actividades frequentes de remoção de neve durante os meses de inverno!.

…this entire region is known for steep slopes, rapidly changing weather conditions and heavy winter snowfall, requiring frequent snow removal activities during the winter months!.

 …abreviando tudo isto num pequeno resumo, a estrada, em algumas áreas tem faixas mais baixas, passa lá no fundo, entre montanhas, junto da linha do caminho de ferro e do rio, alternando-se, em outras zonas, em que passa o rio em baixo, o caminho de ferro e a estrada por cima, ou ainda em outras áreas onde tudo segue lado a lado, com pequenas subidas ou descidas que logo se transformam em zonas planas, pelo menos quando se entra nos vários túneis que nos vão aparecendo!. 

…abbreviating all of this in a short summary, the road, in some areas has lower lanes, passes deep down, between mountains, next to the railway line and the river, alternating, in other areas, where the river passes below, the railway and the road above, or in other areas where everything runs side by side, with small climbs or descents that soon turn into flat areas, at least when you enter the various tunnels that go to you appearing!

…e para terminar, ao descer das montanhas, esta estrada entra na área metropolitana de Denver, servindo como uma importante rota urbana através do centro de Denver, fornecendo conexões com outras rotas importantes!. Depois, atravessa a “High Plains”, passando por comunidades agrícolas, onde a paisagem fica mais plana e a estrada torna-se mais linear e menos montanhosa!.

…and finally, as it descends from the mountains, this road enters the Denver metropolitan area, serving as an important urban route through downtown Denver, providing connections with other important routes!. Then, it crosses the “High Plains”, passing through agricultural communities, where the landscape becomes flatter and the road becomes more linear and less mountainous!

…Cove Fort, Utah!.

…vindos do norte, viajando no Highway #15 na direção sul, chegámos à região do condado de Millard, no Utah!. Parámos em Cove Fort, que é um lugar mais conhecido para o terminal ocidental do Highway  I-70, que termina próximo, sendo mencionado como um lugar de controle, em sinais de auto-estradas, embora o Cove Forte seja histórico e, não tenha população permanente!.

…coming from the north, traveling on Highway #15 in a southerly direction, we arrived in the region of Millard County, Utah!. We stopped at Cove Fort, which is a more well-known place for the western terminus of Highway I-70, which ends nearby, being mentioned as a control place, on highway signs, although Cove Fort is historic and has no permanent population!.

…hoje é um lugar histórico, sendo fundado no ano de 1867 por Ira Hinckley (o avô paterno de Gordon B. Hinckley) a pedido de Brigham Young, e uma das suas características distintivas é a utilização de rocha vulcânica na construção das paredes, em vez da madeira utilizada em muitos fortes ocidentais de meados do século XIX. Esta diferença na construção é a razão pela qual é um dos poucos fortes deste período que ainda sobrevivem!.

…today it is a historic place, being founded in 1867 by Ira Hinckley (Gordon B. Hinckley’s paternal grandfather) at the request of Brigham Young, and one of its distinctive features is the use of volcanic rock in the construction of the walls, instead of the wood used in many western forts of the mid-19th century!. This difference in construction is the reason why it is one of the few forts from this period that still survive!.

…e, uma das principais razões porque este lugar foi selecionado pelo já acima mencionado Brigham Young, (que foi um líder religioso e político, sendo o segundo presidente da Igreja de Jesus Cristo dos Santos dos Últimos Dias, desde 1847 até sua morte em 1877, e que também serviu como o primeiro governador do Território de Utah de 1851 até sua renúncia em 1858), foi a sua estratégica localização, a meio caminho entre Fillmore, antiga capital do Território de Utah, e a cidade mais próxima, Beaver, proporcionando assim uma estação de caminho, para pessoas que viajavam pelo Corredor Mormon!. 

…and, one of the main reasons why this site was selected by the aforementioned Brigham Young, (who was a religious and political leader, being the second president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, from 1847 until his death in 1877, and who also served as the first governor of the Utah Territory from 1851 until his resignation in 1858), was its strategic location, midway between Fillmore, the former capital of Utah Territory, and the nearest city, Beaver, thus providing a way station for people traveling the Mormon Corridor!.

…o Cove Fort,  é um quadrado com 30 m de cada lado!. As paredes são construídas com rocha vulcânica negra e calcário escuro, ambos extraídos das montanhas próximas!. As paredes têm 18 pés de altura e 4 pés de espessura na base, afinando para 2 pés de espessura no topo!. O forte tem dois conjuntos de grandes portas de madeira nas extremidades leste e oeste, originalmente preenchidas com areia para impedir flechas e balas, e contém 12 salas internas, seis na parede norte e seis na parede sul!.

…the Cove Fort, is a square with 30 m on each side!. The walls are built from black volcanic rock and dark limestone, both quarried from nearby mountains!. The walls are 18 feet high and 4 feet thick at the base, tapering to 2 feet thick at the top!. The fort has two sets of large wooden doors at the east and west ends, originally filled with sand to stop arrows and bullets, and contains 12 internal rooms, six in the north wall and six in the south wall!.

…naquela época, como uma paragem diária para duas linhas de diligências, bem como muitos outros viajantes, Cove Fort foi fortemente usado por muitos anos, muitas vezes habitando e alimentando até 75 pessoas por dia, além de dar um lugar para descansar, um ferreiro/agricultor residia no forte, que calçava cavalos e bois e também reparava rodas de carroças e diligências. Também tinha um escritório de telégrafo e era uma paragem do Pony Express!.

…at that time, as a daily stop for two stagecoach lines as well as many other travelers, Cove Fort was heavily used for many years, often housing and feeding up to 75 people a day, as well as providing a place to rest, a blacksmith/farmer resided in the fort, who shod horses and oxen and also repaired wagon and stagecoach wheels. It also had a telegraph office and was a Pony Express stop!.

…uma amável pessoa foi o nosso guia, que nos ia abrindo as portas e explicando com algum pormenor todas as instalações deste forte, que como acima já explicámos, foi uma estação intermediária para pessoas que viajavam pela Estrada Mormon. No entanto, já anteriormente uma aldeia ou cidade teria sido construída no local de Cove Fort, mas o abastecimento de água era inadequado para sustentar uma população considerável!.

…a kind person was our guide, who opened the doors to us and explained in some detail all the facilities of this fort, which, as we explained above, was an intermediate station for people traveling along the Mormon Road!. However, previously a village or town would have been built on the site of Cove Fort, but the water supply was inadequate to support a sizeable population!.

…e, um dos fatores chave para a seleção deste local foi a existência anterior de um forte com paliçada de madeira, o Forte Willden, que depois forneceu abrigo e segurança para as equipes de trabalho que construíram o Forte Cove!.

…and, one of the key factors in the selection of this site was the previous existence of a wooden palisaded fort, Fort Willden, which later provided shelter and security for the work crews who built Fort Cove!.

…já vamos longe na nossa descrição, no entanto, ainda existe espaço para mencionar que, foi construído pelos membros de A Igreja de Jesus Cristo dos Santos dos Últimos Dias como um refúgio seguro entre Fillmore, a antiga capital do Território de Utah, e as cidades vizinhas de Beaver e Kanos, e Cove Fort serviu como uma estação importante à medida que Utah e o resto do Ocidente se tornavam mais estabelecidos!. No entanto, devido ao abastecimento inadequado de água que seria necessário para sustentar uma cidade ou aldeia, ela nunca foi totalmente povoada!. 

…we’re already far enough into our description, however, there’s still room to mention that it was built by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as a safe haven between Fillmore, the former capital of Utah Territory, and the neighboring cities of Beaver and Kanos, and Cove Fort served as an important station as Utah and the rest of the West became more established! However, due to the inadequate supply of water that would be needed to sustain a city or village, it was never fully populated! 

…para terminar e como curiosidade, no ano de 1988, a família Hinckley comprou o forte e doou-o à Igreja. A Igreja restaurou o forte, transportou a cabana de Ira Hinckley em Coalville, Utah, para o local, construiu um centro de visitantes e reabriu o forte como local histórico!. O local oferece visitas guiadas gratuitas diariamente, começando por volta das 8h até meia hora antes do pôr do so!l.

…to finish and as a curiosity, in 1988, the Ira Hinckley family bought the fort and donated it to the Church. The Church restored the fort, moved Ira Hinckley’s cabin in Coalville, Utah, to the site, built a visitor center, and reopened the fort as a historic site! The site offers free guided tours daily, starting at around 8am until half an hour before sunset.

”Terceira Expedição ao Antigo Oeste”!. (13) ”Third Expedition to the Old West”!. (13)

…no último dia da nossa “Terceira Expedição ao Antigo Oeste”, passando pelos estados de Louisiana, Mississippi e Alabama…,  finalmente chegámos à Flórida, onde vivemos e regressámos de novo!. O tempo foi de quase céu azul com algumas nuvens brancas!. O que “pretendíamos era viajar para leste, ou seja, chegar a casa”!.  Como tal, a história do dia…, não tem história!. 

…on the last day of our “Third expedition to the Old West”, passing through the states of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama…, we finally came to Florida, where we lived and returned again!. The weather was almost blue sky with some white clouds!. What we “intended was to travel east, that is, to get home”!.  As such, the story of the day…, there is no history!. 

…e finalmente…, chegamos a casa!. Foram 13 dias e noites, 7.446 milhas percorridas, 2.112 fotos e atravessando 22 estados nos USA!. Passamos por cidades, vilas, aldeias, estradas de montanha, (onde mesmo sendo verão, havia neve no seu cume e  só estavam abertas ao publico dois a três meses ao ano), parques nacionais, com temperaturas de calor algumas vezes infernal, algum frio, chuva, lama, poeira, pedra miúda, reparações ou desvios de estradas destruídas por avalanches, ou até ventos fortes tal qual tornados, e…, também lindos dias de céu azul, através de planícies, rios ou pequenos riachos!.

…and finally…, we got home!. It was 13 days and nights, 7,446 miles traveled, 2,112 photos and crossing 22 states in the USA!. We passed through cities, villages, villages, mountain roads (where even if it is summer, there was snow on its summit and only two to three months old a year were open), national parks, with temperatures of heat sometimes infernal, some cold, rain, mud, dust, stone, repairs or deviations of roads destroyed by avalanches, or even strong winds, and…, also beautiful days of blue sky, sky, sky blue sky through plains, rivers or small streams!.

…foi uma viagem panorâmica semelhante a uma viagem no tempo, aprendendo sempre, muitas vezes sendo atraídos por aventuras ao ar livre, explorando lugares históricos ou simplesmente mergulhando numa atmosfera descontraída, tendo  oportunidade de poder explorar exposições e artefactos que nos ofereceram informações sobre o passado, que às vezes abrigava tesouros históricos, proporcionando-nos uma apreciação mais profunda do seu significado cultural!. 

…it was a panoramic trip similar to a time trip, always learning, often being attracted to outdoor adventures, exploring historical places or simply plunging into a relaxed atmosphere, having the opportunity to explore exhibitions and artifacts that offered us information about the past, which sometimes housed historical treasures, providing us with a deeper appreciation of its cultural meaning!.

…ao longe víamos grandes ou pequenas montanhas com alguma  neve, outras cobertas com floresta, estradas com duas vias e rápidas, outras pequenas, com curvas e precipícios, com o piso em lama e água!. Parávamos aqui e ali, para admirar a natureza pura, com os animais ou aves selvagens no seu próprio território, onde nós sim…, éramos os intrusos que ocupávamos o seu espaço!. 

…in the distance we saw large or small mountains with some snow, some covered with forest, two -way and fast roads, some small, curved and cliffs, with the floor in mud and water!. We stopped here and there, to admire pure nature, with the animals or wild birds in their own territory, where we yes…, we were the intruders we took up their space!. 

…vimos e fomos convivendo com pessoas de outras latitudes, mas com o mesmo sentido de aventura, muitas vezes debaixo de um sol radiante, outras, tal como acima já descrevemos, frio, chuva, lama ou poeira e nuvens escuras e…, não sabendo onde era o nosso destino para esse dia, ou onde pernoitaríamos!.

…we saw and were living with people of other latitudes, but with the same sense of adventure, often under a radiant sun, others, as we already describe, cold, rain, mud or dust and dark clouds and…, not knowing where it was our destination for that day, or where we would stay!.

…e coisas assim, só acontecem a quem anda na estrada e adora ver cenários deslumbrantes, onde não existe vontade de sair deles, e…, dormindo sempre na nossa “White Fox” (caravana) e…, acordando com vista para lagos, cujo cenário, só se vê em revistas de propaganda das agências de viajem!. Enfim, uma experiência única, na vida de qualquer pessoa!.

…and things like that, only those who walk on the road and love to see stunning scenarios, where there is no desire to get out of them, and…, always sleeping in our “White Fox” (caravan) and…, waking up with lakes, whose scenery, only finds itself in propaganda magazines of travel agencies!. Anyway, a unique experience, in anyone’s life!.

…e, consideramo-nos uns privilegiados, porque depois desta aventura…, chegámos a casa!. Até um dia destes, companheiros de jornada!.

…and we consider ourselves privileged, because after this adventure…, we arrived home!. Until one of these days, companions of journey!

”Terceira Expedição ao Antigo Oeste”!. (12) ”Third Expedition to the Old West”!. (12)

…no último resumo desta nossa odisseia, mencionámos que…, “aceitamos todas estas contrariedades, porque fazem parte da nossa aventura”!. É a verdade!. Porquê?. Porque quem vive na estrada, percorrendo milhares de milhas contínuas, em parte vive da sorte!. E nós, consideramo-nos uns privilegiados com alguma sorte!. Como tal, aceitamos qualquer contrariedade, porque ela faz parte da nossa aventura e felizmente…,“aceitar todas estas contrariedades”, ajuda-nos a ainda andar por cá!.

…in the last summary of our Odyssey, we mentioned that…, “we accept all these setbacks, because they are part of our adventure”!. It’s the truth!. Why?. Because those who live on the road, traveling thousands of continuous miles, partly lives on luck!. And we consider ourselves privileged with some luck!. As such, we accept any contrary, because it is part of our adventure and fortunately…, “Accepting all these setbacks”, helps us still walk here!.

…hoje foi um dia agradável!. Saímos da cidade de Beaumont, Texas, em direcção ao leste na estrada “Interstate 10”, (que vem lá da California e nos há-de levar de novo à Florida)!. Paramos para visitar mais uma vez a cidade de Nova Orleães, no estado de Louisiana, onde nos acomodámos num excelente parque de RV, dentro da cidade e com acesso a quase todas as facilidades!.

…today was a pleasant day!. We left the city of Beaumont, Texas, towards the east on the “Interstate 10” road (which comes from California and will take us again to Florida)!. We stopped to visit the city of New Orleans, in the state of Louisiana, where we accommodated in an excellent RV park, inside the city and with access to almost all facilities!.

…fizemos um “tour” pela cidade, vimos barcos na água, no entanto disseram-nos que a cidade está localizada abaixo do nível do mar e, por causa disso, a cidade é cercada por diques, ou seja represas ou açudes, que são uma obra de engenharia hidráulica com a finalidade de manter determinadas áreas secas, através do apresamento de águas correntes!.

…we took a ”tour” of the city, we saw boats in the water, however they told us that the city is located below sea level and, because of this, the city is surrounded by dikes, ie dams or dams, which are a hydraulic engineering work to maintain certain dry areas, through the hurry of current water!.

 …apreciámos as casas históricas na também parte histórica da cidade, tal como o seu famoso cemitério, que às vezes é vedeta de filmes de Hollywood, procurando talvez o…, fantasma do Pirata Jean Lafitte, que nos dias de hoje, ainda ninguém sabe se foi um pirata ou um herói nacional, onde nasceu ou onde morreu, pois tudo isso permanece um mistério, no entanto continua sendo um dos nomes mais reconhecidos, quando se fala sobre figuras na história de Nova Orleães, e claro, da Louisiana!. 

…we appreciated the historic houses in the historical part of the city, just like its famous cemetery, which is sometimes a storm of Hollywood movies, perhaps looking for the…, Pirate Jean Lafitte’s ghost, which these days, nobody has been a pirate or a national hero, where it was born or died, because all this remains one of the most recognized names when it comes to the most recognized names Figures in the history of New Orleans, and of course, from Louisiana!.

…e nós, viajantes do mundo, tal como quase todos aqueles que visitam Nova Orleães, é no “Bairro Francês”, que é designado por “French Quarter”, onde a culinária “Créole”, o Rio Mississippi, ou outras tantas atracções turísticas, e claro, também o Pirata Jean Lafitte, que é uma figura de um tempo romântico e brutal que simplesmente faz parte do maravilhoso folclore do sul da Louisiana!.

… and we travelers of the world, like almost all those who visit New Orleans, is in the “French neighborhood”, which is called “French Quarter”, where the “Créle” cuisine, the Mississippi River, or many other tourist attractions, and of course, also the Pirate Jean Lafitte, who is a figure of a romantic and brutal time that is simply part of the wonderful Folklore of the South of the South Louisiana!.

…no ano de 2005, o maldito Furacão Katrina, passou por aqui,  devastando a Costa do Golfo, particularmente Nova Orleans, Louisiana e partes do Mississippi!. A cidade e o seu povo sofreram, pois estiveram debaixo d’água por dias a semanas, com 80% da cidade inundada, no entanto sobreviveu e os seus negócios cresceram, pelo menos é o que nos pareceu!.

…in 2005, the damn Hurricane Katrina, passed by, devastating the Gulf Coast, particularly New Orleans, Louisiana and parts of Mississippi!. The city and its people suffered, as they were underwater for days to weeks, with 80% of the flooded city, however survived and its business grew, at least that’s what it seemed to us!.

…pois no nosso roteiro, andámos pela área do “Bairro Francês”, que como acima já explicámos, é designado por “French Quarter”, e o custo de qualquer coisa,… custa mais do dobro do que em qualquer outro lugar, e claro, não querendo parafrasear e voltando ao Pirata Jean Lafitte, onde também na sua época, o seu negócio cresceu, com os seus corsários organizando embarques e venda de mercadorias contrabandeadas, obtendo um lucro fabuloso para aquela época!.

…because in our script, we walked through the “French neighborhood” area, which as we have already explained above, is designated by “French Quarter”, and the cost of anything,… it costs more than twice than anywhere else, and of course, not wanting to paraphrase and returning to the Pirate Jean Lafitte, where also in its time, its business has grown, with its orstanding shipments and sale smuggled, making a fabulous profit for that time!..

…e também como acima já explicámos,“aceitamos todas estas contrariedades, porque fazem parte da nossa aventura”!. E até compreendemos toda esta exorbitância nos preços das coisas, porque nos encontramos numa zona caracterizada pela sua arquitectura histórica de inspiração francesa e espanhola, marcada pela exuberância das suas varandas em ferro forjado, pela intensidade da sua vida nocturna, existência de numerosos estabelecimentos de diversão, restaurantes, com uma culinária assente na cultura “Créole”, que se refere aos imigrantes brancos e negros que vieram para a Louisiana, das colónias francesas nas Antilhas, a Martinica e o Haiti, que chegaram no século XVIII!.

…and also as we have explained above, “we accept all these setbacks, because they are part of our adventure”!. And we even understand all this exorbitance in the prices of things, because we find ourselves in an area characterized by its historical architecture of French and Spanish inspiration, marked by the exuberance of its forged iron balconies, the intensity of their night life, existence of numerous fun establishments, restaurants, with a “Créle” culture, which refers to white and black immigrants that came to the black Louisiana, from the French colonies in the Antilles, Martinica and Haiti, who arrived in the eighteenth century!.

…passámos um bom tempo, caminhamos, entrando aqui e ali, em alguns lugares de diversão, ouvindo “jazz”, vendo desfiles, pessoas alegres e com um riso tranquilizante e alguns diziam-nos, que Nova Orleães, está assombrada e que o fantasma do famoso pirata que talvez fosse francês, Jean Lafitte, continua passear-se pelas ruas estreitas do “French Quarter”!. 

…we spent a long time, walked, entering here and there, in some places of fun, listening to “jazz”, seeing parades, happy people and with a reassuring laugh and some told us, that New Orleans, is haunted and that the ghost of the famous pirate who may be French, Jean Lafitte, continues to walk the stretch streets of “French Quarter”. 

…se isto é verdade não sabemos!. Talvez tivesse passado por nós despercebido, com um copo de bebida numa mão, a máquina fotográfica na outra, lembrando que esta cidade, fundada por volta do ano de 1718, por um tal Jean Baptiste le Moyne, que foi o governador da Colónia Francesa de Louisiana, em homenagem a Filipe, Duque de Orleães, que na altura era o chefe de estado da França!.

…if this is true we don’t know!. Perhaps he had gone unnoticed, with a glass of drink in one hand, the camera in the other, remembering that this city, founded around 1718, by such a Jean Baptiste Le Moyne, who was the governor of the French colony of Louisiana, in honor of Philip, Duke of Orleães, who at the time was the head of state of France!.

…já a noite ia avançada quando regressámos muito felizes, ao nosso parque de RV!.

…already the night was advanced when we returned very happy, to our RV! Park!.

”Terceira Expedição ao Antigo Oeste”!. (5) ”Third Expedition to the Old West”!. (5)

…já era o quinto dia que viajem!. Já por aqui tínhamos viajado por outras vezes e gostaríamos de por cá passar mais tempo, mas esse tempo estava controlado e tínhamos que seguir viagem, não havendo oportunidade para apreciar este maravilhoso cenário, agora com um céu às vezes azul, vendo os pequenos pormenores, com planícies, montanhas, desfiladeiros, vida selvagem, tudo numa região muito rica em história, formações geológicas impressionantes, cultura e beleza natural!.

…it was already the fifth day that travels!. Already here we had traveled sometimes and would like to spend more time, but this time was controlled and we had to go on, with no opportunity to enjoy this wonderful scenario, now with a blue sky, seeing the small details, with plains, mountains, canyons, wildlife, all very rich in history, impressive geological formations, culture and natural beauty!.  

…todo este maravilhoso cenário, são exemplos da odisseia, da terra prometida, da aventura dos colonos a caminho do Oeste, para onde seguiam pessoas das mais variadas origens, procurando novos rumos, para onde alguns levavam na sua mente o tal espírito de aventura, que todos nós temos e que às vezes é só “querer estar onde não estamos”!.

…all this wonderful scenario are examples of Odyssey, Promised Land, the adventure of the settlers on their way to the West, where people of various origins follow, looking for new directions, where some carried in their mind such an adventure spirit, which we all have and sometimes ”just want to be where we are not”!.

…continuando, tínhamos pernoitado num parque de RV, muito próximo da pequena cidade de Red Lodge, Montana, aninhada nas montanhas de Beartooth e cercada pela floresta nacional de Custer Gallatin, onde muitos anos atrás habitava a “Nação dos índios Crow”, no entanto, por volta do ano de 1870, foram encontrados ricos depósitos de carvão e até ouro foi descoberto nas proximidades!. 

…continuing, we had stayed overnight in a RV park, very close to the small town of Red Lodge, Montana, nestled in the mountains of Beartooth and surrounded by the National Gallatin Forest, where many years ago inhabiting the “Crow Indian nation”, however, around 1870, rich coal and even gold deposits were found nearby!. 

…contudo, no final do século XIX, muitos novos colonos chegaram a Red Lodge, onde a sua maioria veio da Itália, das Ilhas Britânicas, Finlândia, Noruega, Suécia, Alemanha e Áustria-Hungria, que por aqui foram ficando e hoje, pelo menos no seu centro histórico, existem lojas, hotéis e restaurantes, com experiências gastronómicas excepcionais, sendo, onde começa a histórica Estrada Beartooth, que é uma das unidades panorâmicas mais de tirar o fôlego nos USA, enrolando montanhas acidentadas e oferecendo vistas inspiradoras a cada momento!. 

…however, in the late nineteenth century, many new settlers arrived in Red Lodge, where most came from Italy, the British Isles, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Germany and Austria-Hungary, which were staying here and today, at least in his Historic Center, there are shops, hotels and restaurants, with exceptional gastronomic experiences, where the historic Beartooth Road begins, which is one of the most breathtaking panoramic units in the USA, wrapping rugged mountains and offering inspiring views every moment!.

…e como acima já explicámos, por outras vezes já tentámos viajar nesta histórica estrada, mas sempre havia chuva, inundações ou neve e estava fechada para normal circulação, mesmo assim ainda percorremos algumas partes, mas atravessando-a totalmente não!. Hoje, o nosso programa era atravessá-la totalmente e…, viver essa para nós, grande odisseia!. 

…and as we explained above, sometimes we have tried traveling on this historic road, but there was always rain, flooding or snow and was closed to normal circulation, yet we still traveled some parts, but crossing it totally not!. Today, our program was to cross it totally and…, to live this one for us, great odyssey!. 

…a Estrada Beartooth, estende-se por aproximadamente 68 milhas ao longo da Rota 212 dos EUA!. Esta estrada icónica, aberta somente alguns meses no verão com bom tempo, pois devido à sua elevação e às duras condições de inverno, a Estrada Beartooth, geralmente está aberta apenas do final de Maio a meados de Outubro, dependendo da queda de neve!.  Conecta a cidade de Red Lodge, Montana, até à entrada nordeste do Parque Nacional de Yellowstone, em Wyoming, todavia podemos seguir nela até à entrada norte do já referido Parque Yellowstone, na Silver Gate, em Montana, e felizmente foi o que fizemos!. 

…Beartooth Road extends to approximately 68 miles along the US Route 212!. This iconic road, opened only a few months in summer with a good time, because due to its elevation and the harsh winter conditions, the Beartooth Road is usually open from late May to mid -October, depending on snowfall!.  Connects the city of Red Lodge, Montana, to the northeast entrance of Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, but we can continue to it to the north entrance of the Yellowstone Park in Silver Gate, in Montana, and fortunately that’s what we did!. 

…também é conhecida como “A estrada mais bonita da America”, sobe a uma elevação de quase 10.947 pés no “Beartooth Pass, (onde estivemos e…, como adoramos caminhar, na companhia da nossa dedicada esposa Isaura, fizemos um passeio numa pequena trilha de aproximadamente meia milha, e nesta já um pouco avançada idade, felizmente sem qualquer sintoma fora do normal), tornando-a a rodovia pavimentada mais alta das Montanhas Rochosas do Norte!.

… It is also known as “the most beautiful road in America”, rises to a rise of almost 10,947 feet on the “Beartooth Pass”, (where we were and …, as we love to walk, in the company of our dedicated wife Isaura, we took a walk in a small trail of approximately half a mile, and in this one a little age, fortunately without any unusual symptoms), making it the highest roller coast from the north!.

…o local do”Beartooth Pass” é um passe de montanha alto, localizado nas montanhas rochosas, especificamente na Estrada Beartooth!.  Está a uma altitude de 10.947 pés, tornando-se no ponto mais alto desta estrada!. Como acima já referimos, este passe conecta a Cidade de Red Lodge, Montana e a entrada nordeste do Parque Nacional de Yellowstone!.

 …the place of “Beartooth Pass” is a high mountain pass, located in the rocky mountains, specifically on Beartooth! Road.  It is at an altitude of 10,947 feet, becoming at the highest point of this road!. As we have mentioned above, this passes the city of Red Lodge, Montana and the northeast entry of Yellowstone!. 

…no entanto, a própria Estrada Beartooth abrange partes de Montana e Wyoming, enquanto a passagem está localizada no cimo destas montanhas e na fronteira entre esses dois estados!. Como tal, o “Beartooth Pass” está localizado na fronteira entre Montana e Wyoming, ou seja,a cénica Estrada Beartooth, percorrendo os dois estados e subindo para o passe de alta elevação a quase 11.000 pés!.

…however, Beartooth Road itself covers parts of Montana and Wyoming, while the passage is located at the top of these mountains and on the border between these two states!. As such, the Beartooth Pass is located on the border between Montana and Wyoming, that is, the Beartooth Road, traveling the two states and rising to the high elevation pass to almost 11,000 feet.

…esta histórica estrada, representa um paraíso para os entusiastas da natureza e os buscadores de aventura!. Picos imponentes, lagos glaciais, quedas de água em cascata e paisagens alpinas de tundra, que dominam todo o seu cenário!.

…this historic road represents a paradise for nature enthusiasts and adventure search engines!. Imposing peaks, glacial lakes, waterfall waterfalls and tundra alpine landscapes, which dominate all their scenario!.  

…e mais, durante os meses de verão, a rota é revestida com flores silvestres vibrantes, enquanto a neve pode permanecer o ano todo nas elevações mais altas!. Os avistamentos da vida selvagem são comuns, com oportunidades de identificar marmotas, cabras da montanha e até ursos pardos no seu habitat natural!.

…and more, during the summer months, the route is covered with vibrant wild flowers, while snow can stay all year in the highest elevations!. Wildlife sightings are common, with opportunities to identify marmotes, mountain goats and even brown bears in their natural habitat!.

…a sua rota oferece-nos inúmeras retiradas para trilhas e  caminhadas, tal como oportunidades de fotos, incluindo vistas espetaculares como o Beartooth Pass Vista Point!. Para os viajantes que vão para Yellowstone, serve como uma introdução dramática à beleza selvagem do ecossistema do Grande Yellowstone, tornando-a uma experiência obrigatória para quem explora o Oeste Americano!.

… Its route offers us numerous withdrawals for trails and hiking, such as photo opportunities, including spectacular views like Beartooth Pass Vista Point!. For travelers who go to Yellowstone, it serves as a dramatic introduction to the wild beauty of the great Yellowstone ecosystem, making it a mandatory experience for those who explore the West American!.

…anos atrás, já tínhamos entrado no estado de Wyoming e quase todos os viajantes com quem nos cruzávamos nos diziam que conseguiram chegar até à comunidade de Cooke City, em Montana, mas daí para diante a estrada estava mesmo interdita, portanto voltavam!.

…years ago, we had already entered the state of Wyoming and almost all travelers we crossed told us that they managed to reach the Cooke City community in Montana, but from then on the road was really prohibited, so they came back!.

…desta vez cruzámos esta cidade de Cooke City, em Montana, com bom tempo!. O cenário que serpenteia pela Floresta Nacional Shoshone e pelas montanhas, também tem história porque em algumas partes segue a rota seguida pelo “Chefe Joseph” para fora do hoje Parque Nacional de Yellowstone e para Montana, no ano de 1877, durante a sua tentativa de fugir da Cavalaria dos EUA e escapar para o Canadá!. 

…this time we crossed this city of Cooke City, in Montana, with good time!. The scenario that serpents through the National Shoshone Forest and the Mountains also has history because in some parts follows the route followed by “Chief Joseph” out of today Yellowstone National Park and to Montana, in 1877, during his attempt to escape the US cavalry and escape to Canada!.

…a sua localização geográfica é remota, por estar cercada por altos picos e passagens de montanhas e o único acesso rodoviário durante todo o ano é a partir da localidade de Gardiner,  Montana, que está localizada na entrada nordeste do Parque Nacional Yellowstone!. Todavia, também tem acesso rodoviário a partir de Red Lodge, Montana, mas como já explicámos anteriormente, é sazonal, abrindo a Estrada Beartooth, apenas do final de Maio a meados de Outubro, dependendo da queda de neve!.  

…its geographical location is remote, being surrounded by high peaks and mountain passages and the only road access throughout the year is from the locality of Gardiner, Montana, which is located at the northeast entrance of Yellowstone!. However, it also has road access from Red Lodge, Montana, but as we explained earlier, it is seasonal, opening the Beartooth Road, only from late May to mid -October, depending on snowfall!.

…uma curiosidade, é que só por volta de 1869-70, os primeiros mineiros começaram a descobrir ouro na área e no início desta comunidade, onde os lotes de terreno de esquina foram vendidos inicialmente por 20 dolares e os lotes internos por 10 dolares e por aqui havia cerca de 35 homens e uma mulher nesta nova comunidade de Cooke City, onde começaram a construir casas de toras de madeira…, no local onde o que hoje é a rua principal!.

…a curiosity, is that only around 1869-70, the first miners began to discover gold in the area and at the beginning of this community, where the lots of land were initially sold by 20 dollars and the internal lots for 10 dollars and around 35 men and a woman in this new Cooke City community, where they started building houses of wooden logs…, where today is the main street!

…e finalizando o resumo deste nosso quinto dia de odisseia rumo ao Oeste, seguimos para norte, (quase como muito anos atrás fez o “Chefe Joseph” para fora do hoje Parque Nacional de Yellowstone e para o norte de Montana, no ano de 1877, durante a sua tentativa de fugir da Cavalaria dos EUA e escapar para o Canadá), onde já o dia ia longo, indo pernoitar num parque de RV, já na cidade de Helena, em Montana!.

…and finishing the summary of our fifth day of Odyssey towards the West, we went to the north, (almost as much years ago did the “Chief Joseph” out of today Yellowstone National Park and north of Montana, in 1877, during his attempt to escape the US cavalry and escape to Canada), where the day was already going to stay in a RV park, already in the city of Helena, already in the city of Helena, in the city of Helena, in Montana!.

…estamos no ano de 2025!. (…it is the year 2025)!

…estamos no ano de 2025 e…, se vocês estão sentindo o impacto da inflação dos últimos anos, podem crer que não estão sozinhos!. Principalmente os idosos, tal como nós, também temos sentido e muito esse impacto!.

…it is the year 2025 and…, if you are feeling the impact of inflation in recent years, you can believe that you are not alone!. Especially the elderly, just like us, have also felt this impact a lot!. 

…presentemente, não importa em que parte do mundo se vive, a causa que esta mega-inflação tem nas nossas vidas cremos que se iniciou nas interrupções da cadeia de suprimentos causadas pela pandemia, que tornaram mais difícil e mais caro obter produtos nas prateleiras dos super-mercados, tal como o aumento dos custos de produção, desde matérias-primas até à mão-de-obra, e claro…, quem paga é o consumidor!.

…currently, no matter where in the world you live, the cause of this mega-inflation in our lives we believe began with the interruptions in the supply chain caused by the pandemic, which made it more difficult and more expensive to get products on supermarket shelves, as well as the increase in production costs, from raw materials to labor, and of course…, the consumer is the one who pays! 

…é uma situação frustrante, mas entender as razões por trás destes aumentos de preços, a nós, e repetimos já idosos, que normalmente vivemos do que amealhámos enquanto estávamos no mercado de trabalho e duma reforma onde o governo nunca acompanhou esta inflação constante, não nos pode ajudar a navegar nestes tempos desafiadores!.

…it is a frustrating situation, but understanding the reasons behind these price increases, for us, and we repeat, already elderly, who normally live off what we saved while we were in the job market and from a pension where the government never kept up with this constant inflation, cannot help us navigate these challenging times! 

…felizmente, temos moradia e o fogão na cozinha ainda vai trabalhando pelo menos uma vez ao dia, mas milhares ou mesmo milhões de pessoas em todo o mundo nada disto têm!. E cada dia que passa a inflação aumenta!. Por exemplo, no ano de  1989, o preço médio de uma casa por aqui onde presentemente vivemos era de US $46.000, hoje, são mais de $420.000, uma dúzia de ovos eram $0.78, hoje, são mais de $6.85!. 

…fortunately, we have housing and the stove in the kitchen still works at least once a day, but thousands or even millions of people around the world have none of this!. And every day that passes, inflation increases!. For example, in 1989, the average price of a house here where we currently live was US $46,000, today, it is more than $420,000, a dozen eggs were $0.78, today, it is more than $6.85!.

…sim, também sabemos que o salário de um trabalhador era menor, mas a diferença não era assim tão grande e…, quer isto dizer que existiu uma tempestade perfeita de fatores e o custo de vida aumentou e continua a aumentar todos os dias na maioria dos lugares nos últimos anos, tornando cada vez mais difícil para muitas pessoas pagarem uma casa ou a sua renda, tal como os bens de primeira necessidade, tornando a normal vida numa questão complexa e desafiadora que requer muita atenção e…, para nós pessoas idosas, cremos mesmo que qualquer mudança…, já vêm tarde!.

…yes, we also know that the salary of a worker was lower, but the difference was not that great and…, this means that there was a perfect storm of factors and the cost of living has increased and continues to increase every day in most places in recent years, making it increasingly difficult for many people to pay for a house or their rent, as well as basic necessities, making normal life a complex and challenging matter that requires a lot of attention and…, for us elderly people, we really believe that any change…, is already too late!. 

…e terminamos dizendo que o momento que hoje se vive, é uma questão complexa que requer uma abordagem cuidadosa, porque o preço da energia, particularmente petróleo, gás e electricidade, têm uma influência maciça na economia, e claro, faz aumentar o custo dos bens essenciais para se viver, e quando os custos da energia aumentam, de imediato contribui para o aumento de todos preços em geral!.

…and we end by saying that the current situation is a complex issue that requires a careful approach, because the price of energy, particularly oil, gas and electricity, has a massive influence on the economy, and of course, increases the cost of essential goods for living, and when energy costs increase, it immediately contributes to the increase of all prices in general!

…”WOW”, a nossa dedicada esposa Isaura, foi fazer as compras da semana ao super-mercado local e chegou mesmo agora e disse: “venho “perdida”, vê lá tu que uma dúzia de ovos custou $7.65”!. (o preço já subiu outra vez).

…”WOW”, our devoted wife Isaura, went to do the weekly shopping at the local supermarket and just arrived and said: “I’m “lost”, just look, a dozen eggs cost $7.65”!. (the price has already gone up again).

…comunidades remotas em Montana!. (…remote communities in Montana)!.

…estávamos em Red Lodge, Montana e chovia!. Era nossa intenção, mais uma vez tentar viajar pela Highway 212, que é a panorâmica Beartooth Highway, no entanto, parte dela estava interdita porque o temporal causou algumas inundações mas, vagarosamente íamos prosseguindo parando aqui e ali, onde outros viajantes que se cruzavam com nós também paravam e trocávamos informação de como a estrada estava e até onde se podia chegar!.

…we were in Red Lodge, Montana and it was raining!. It was our intention, once again, to try to travel along Highway 212, which is the scenic Beartooth Highway, however, part of it was closed because the storm caused some flooding, but we slowly continued stopping here and there, where other travelers who crossed paths with We also stopped and exchanged information on how the road was and how far we could get!.

…era a famosa e panorâmica Beartooth Highway, que entra ao norte do estado de Wyoming, como tal havia que tentar prosseguir porque o cenário, mesmo com um tempo de chuva era deslumbrante!. Prosseguimos, já tínhamos entrado no estado de Wyoming e quase todos os viajantes com quem nos cruzávamos nos diziam que conseguiram chegaram até à comunidade de Cooke City, em Montana, mas daí para diante a estrada estava mesmo interdita, portanto voltavam!.

…it was the famous and panoramic Beartooth Highway, which enters the north of the state of Wyoming, so we had to try to continue because the scenery, even in rainy weather, was stunning! We continued, we had already entered the state of Wyoming and almost all the travelers we met told us that they had managed to reach the community of Cooke City, in Montana, but from then on the road was closed, so they returned!

…nós tentámos fazer o mesmo, como tal prosseguimos, seguindo para oeste/norte entrando de novo em Montana, chegando à já mencionada comunidade de Cooke City, que nos pareceu um local muito pitoresco e o cenário desta estrada que serpenteia pela Floresta Nacional Shoshone e pelas montanhas, também tem história porque em algumas partes segue a rota seguida pelo “Chefe Joseph” para fora do hoje Parque Nacional de Yellowstone e para Montana, no ano de 1877, durante a sua tentativa de fugir da Cavalaria dos EUA e escapar para o Canadá!. 

…we tried to do the same, so we continued, heading west/north back into Montana, arriving at the aforementioned community of Cooke City, which seemed like a very picturesque place and the setting for this road that winds through the Shoshone National Forest and through the mountains, it also has history because in some parts it follows the route taken by “Chief Joseph” out of what is now Yellowstone National Park and into Montana in 1877, during his attempt to escape the US Cavalry and escape to Canada!. 

…toda esta área era relativamente desconhecida para os homens brancos até o final da década de 1860, quando garimpeiros rondavam a área em busca de ouro, no entanto hoje, a principal indústria da comunidade de Cooke City, é o turismo, que durante o inverno inclui esqui e snowmobile!. A  famosa e panorâmica Beartooth Highway, passa pelo seu centro, levando a sudoeste até o Parque Nacional de Yellowstone, numa rota panorâmica que sobe a 10.947 pés (3.337 m) de altitude através das montanhas e do Planalto Beartooth!, para continuar a sudeste de volta ao Wyoming no vale do rio Clarks Fork Yellowstone!.

…this entire area was relatively unknown to white men until the late 1860s, when prospectors prowled the area in search of gold, however today, the Cooke City community’s main industry is tourism, which during the winter includes skiing and snowmobiling!. The famous and scenic Beartooth Highway passes through its center, leading southwest to Yellowstone National Park on a scenic route that climbs 10,947 feet (3,337 m) in elevation through the mountains and Beartooth Plateau!, to continue southeast of back to Wyoming in the Clarks Fork Yellowstone River Valley!.

…a sua localização geográfica é remota, por estar cercada por altos picos e passagens de montanhas e o único acesso rodoviário durante todo o ano é a partir da localidade de Gardiner,  Montana, que está localizada na entrada nordeste do Parque Nacional Yellowstone!. Todavia, também tem acesso rodoviário a partir de Red Lodge, Montana, (que foi seguido por nós), mas é sazonal, abrindo no final da primavera e fechando bem no início do inverno!.

…a despovoação em alguns territórios no ocidente era normal, porque as possíveis minas de ouro estavam geralmente localizadas em locais remotos e como tal despovoados, no entanto foi a mineração que alimentou os motores da colonização e da “civilização” no ocidente!. Assim, Cooke City era remota,  ficava a muitos dias de dolorosas caminhadas em trilhas difíceis do assentamento mais próximo, que era a hoje cidade de Bozeman, Montana!. 

…depopulation in some territories in the West was normal, because possible gold mines were generally located in remote and therefore unpopulated locations, however it was mining that fueled the engines of colonization and “civilization” in the West!. Thus, Cooke City was remote, it was many days of painful hiking on difficult trails from the nearest settlement, which was today the city of Bozeman, Montana!. 

…só por volta de 1869-70, os primeiros mineiros começaram a descobrir ouro na área e no início desta comunidade, os lotes de terreno de esquina foram vendidos inicialmente por 20 dolares e os lotes internos por 10 dolares e por aqui havia cerca de 35 homens e uma mulher nesta nova comunidade de Cooke City, onde começaram a construir casas de toras de madeira…, onde o que hoje é a rua principal!.

…it wasn’t until around 1869-70 that the first miners began to discover gold in the area and in the early days of this community, corner lots were initially sold for $20 and interior lots for $10 and around here there were about 35 men and a woman in this new community of Cooke City, where they began to build log homes…, where what is now Main Street!.

…e depois de por algum tempo permanecermos por aqui, voltamos pela mesma rota em direcção ao local de onde saímos pela manhã…, que era Red Lodge, Montana, onde continuava a  chover!.

…and after staying here for some time, we returned along the same route towards the place where we left in the morning…, which was Red Lodge, Montana, where it continued to rain!.

“viajem das Christmas de 2024 ao norte”, (“Christmas 2024 trip to the north”)

…fomos ao norte, porque às vezes é necessário retornar à infância, ao seio da família, o único porto de abrigo e…, caminhámos na neve das montanhas de Pennsylvania, porque a experiência de vida diz-nos que nada vive para sempre, só talvez as montanhas e os rios que correm para o mar vivem até o sol se apagar…, depois tudo ficará escuro e já não haverá olhos para ver!.

…we went to the north, because sometimes it is necessary to return to childhood, to the heart of the family, the only haven of shelter and…, we walked in the snow of the mountains of Pennsylvania, because life experience tells us that nothing lives forever, only Maybe the mountains and the rivers that flow to the sea live until the sun goes out…, then everything will be dark and there will be no more eyes to see!.

…depois dum confortável e aconchegante convívio com parte da família nessas montanhas, descemos para o gelo das planícies de Nova Jersey, recebendo de novo o calor da outra parte da família, porque infelizmente o ser humano vivendo fechado ao egoísmo, só se preocupa com o seu interior, querendo fazer valer a sua vontade ao resto do mundo, não se lembrando que o calor da família, ainda é quase tudo na vida!.

…after a comfortable and cozy get-together with part of the family in these mountains, we descended to the ice of the New Jersey plains, once again receiving the warmth of the other part of the family, because unfortunately the human being, living closed to selfishness, only cares about the your inner self, wanting to assert your will to the rest of the world, not remembering that the warmth of family is still almost everything in life!.

…num breve resumo desta viajem das “Christmas de 2024 ao norte”, para lá, passámos pelo estado de Georgia, que se situa a norte do estado da Florida onde presentemente vivemos e a leste do Oceano Atlântico, ainda era madrugada, com um tráfico moderado, o que valeu à nossa dedicada esposa Isaura tirar algumas fotos ao nascer do sol!. 

…in a brief summary of this “Christmas 2024 trip to the north”, there, we passed through the state of Georgia, which is located north of the state of Florida where we currently live and east of the Atlantic Ocean, it was still dawn, with traffic moderate, which meant our dedicated wife Isaura took some photos at sunrise!. 

…entrando e de seguida entrámos no estado da Carolina do Sul, que no século passado experimentou um desenvolvimento económico significativo e onde a Interstate 95 segue por uma distância de aproximadamente 200 milhas e em algumas áreas perto ou com acesso ao Oceano Atlântico!.

…de seguida surge-nos a torre do ”South of the Border”, que é uma atração na Interstate 95,anunciando que entramos no estado de Carolina do Norte, onde a sua primeira evidência de ocupação humana remonta a 10.000 anos!. No entanto hoje, principalmente nas suas áreas metropolitanas, experimentou um aumento constante no crescimento populacional, criando assim um grande desenvolvimento, principalmente nos setores financeiro, bancário e de tecnologia!.

…then we see the “South of the Border” tower, which is an attraction on Interstate 95, announcing that we have entered the state of North Carolina, where the first evidence of human occupation dates back 10,000 years!. However today, especially in its metropolitan areas, it has experienced a constant increase in population growth, thus creating great development, mainly in the financial, banking and technology sectors!.

…e já era no final da tarde quando entrámos no estado da Virgínia onde pernoitámos!. Este estado, faz parte da Planície Atlântica e a Península Média forma a foz da Baía de Chesapeake, tal como a região do sopé das montanhas Blue Ridge, que atravessam as partes oeste e sudoeste do estado!. No fértil Vale do Shenandoah promove os condados agrícolas mais produtivos do estado, enquanto a economia é impulsionada por empresas de tecnologia e agências governamentais federais dos EUA e, temos também de lembrar a Hampton Roads que abriga o principal porto marítimo da região e a Estação Naval de Norfolk, a maior base naval do mundo!. 

…and it was already late afternoon when we entered the state of Virginia where we spent the night!. This state is part of the Atlantic Plain and the Middle Peninsula forms the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, as does the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, which run through the western and southwestern parts of the state!. The fertile Shenandoah Valley boasts the most productive agricultural counties in the state, while the economy is driven by technology companies and US federal government agencies, and we also have to remember Hampton Roads, which is home to the region’s main seaport and Naval Station of Norfolk, the largest naval base in the world!.

…ao outro dia, pela madrugada, atravessando a cidade de Washington, entrámos no estado de Maryland, que é um estado do Meio Atlântico definido por seus abundantes cursos de água e costas na Baía de Chesapeake e no Oceano Atlântico!. A sua maior cidade é Baltimore, (que atravessámos), tem uma longa história como importante porto marítimo!. Fort McHenry, local de nascimento do hino nacional dos EUA, fica na foz do Inner Harbor de Baltimore, onde fica o Aquário Nacional e o Centro de Ciências de Maryland!.

…the other day, at dawn, crossing the city of Washington, we entered the state of Maryland, which is a Mid-Atlantic state defined by its abundant waterways and coasts in the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean!. Its largest city is Baltimore, (which we passed through), it has a long history as an important seaport!. Fort McHenry, birthplace of the US national anthem, is at the mouth of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, home to the National Aquarium and the Maryland Science Center!.
