…estávamos no estado do Utah!. Viajávamos por longas rectas, com placas de sinalização avisando que podia haver fortes ventos e onde há muitos anos viviam duas tribos nativas, que eram os “Utes” e os “Navajos” e onde por volta do ano de 1850, o Congresso dos USA, criou o Território de Utah, tendo nomeado este território numa homenagem à tribo nativa “Ute” que vivia na região!.

…we were in the state of Utah!. We traveled through straight lines, with signs of signaling warning that there could be strong winds and where many years ago there were two native tribes, which were the “Utes” and the “Navajos” and where around 1850, the USA Congress, created the territory of Utah, having named this territory in a tribute to the native “ute” that lived in the region!.

…íamos quase em pleno deserto em direcção ao sul pela estrada #191, onde aqui e ali havia algumas formações rochosas mais salientes, que já se podiam ver a milhas de distância!. Parámos num local que dá pelo nome de Hole N” The Rock, que é uma área com uma casa muito original, considerada histórica e esculpida numa enorme rocha, onde também existe uma loja de presentes e um posto de comércio, onde os viajantes tal como nós, por vezes param para admirar coisas e locais não muito comuns, tal como este!.

…we were almost in full desert towards the south by road #191, where here and there were some more protruding rock formations, which could already see miles away!. We stopped in a place that gives the name of Hole n ”The Rock, which is an area with a very original house, considered historical and carved in a huge rock, where there is also a gift store and a trade station, where travelers like us, sometimes stop to admire not very common things and places, like this!.

…continuando a nossa rota no sentido sul pela estrada #191, viajávamos por uma área que podia ser considerada de planície montanhosa, tal como o local onde se situa o famoso “Wilson Arch”, que é um arco natural que recebeu o nome de Joe Wilson, um pioneiro local que tinha uma cabana próxima em Dry Valley!. 

…continuing our route south by road #191, we traveled through an area that could be considered as a mountainous plain, such as the place where the famous “Wilson Arch” is located, which is a natural bow that was named after Joe Wilson, a local pioneer who had a nearby Cabana in Dry Valley!. 

…este arco é facilmente acessível, bonito e definitivamente vale a caminhada de quatro ou cinco minutos por uma pequena colina, necessários para lá chegar!. É uma formação em arenito que com o tempo sofreu rachaduras superficiais, e o gelo formado nessas fissuras, derretido sob extremo calor do deserto, onde o vento, a água e o tempo foram limpando as partículas soltas, formando este bonito arco!.

…this bow is easily accessible, beautiful and definitely worth the four or five minute walk through a small hill, necessary to get there!. It is a sandstone formation that over time suffered superficial cracks, and the ice formed in these cracks, melted under the extreme heat of the desert, where the wind, water and time were cleaning the loose particles, forming this beautiful arch!.

…e a nossa odisseia continuava pela estrada #191, agorapassando um pouco ao lado da cidade de Bluff,  parando nos majesticamente cénicos pilares de rocha, conhecidos como “Gêmeos Navajos”,  que estão empoleirados num ligeiro promontório!. Estas obras primas geológicas são nomeadas para os “gêmeos míticos de heróis da lenda Navajo”, esculpidos pelo vento e pela água em muitos milénios!. 

…and our odyssey was still on the #191 road, now passing a little by the city of Bluff, stopping in the majestically pillars of rock, known as “navajos twins”, which are perched on a slight promontorium!. These geological masterpieces are named to the “mythical twins of legend of the legend Navajo”, carved by wind and water in many millennia!. 

…estas torres permaneceram de guarda por inúmeras civilizações, a primeira das quais possivelmente foi estabelecida há aproximadamente 650 anos!. Estes “Gêmeos Navajos” silenciosos, agora vigiam uma cidade de 250 pioneiros modernos, que optam por chamar a esta cidade, o seu lar!.

…these towers remained guarded by numerous civilizations, the first of which was possibly established about 650 years ago! These silent “navajos twins” now watch out a city of 250 modern pioneers, who choose to call this city, their home!.

…já na estrada #163, que nos havia de levar um pouco para oeste, mas. sempre rumo ao sul, atravessámos o Rio San Juan, que é um afluente significativo do Rio Colorado, próximo da “Rocha do Chapéu Mexicano”, um lugar um pouco fora do limite norte da Nação Navajo, mas onde se pode observar o que a erosão, durante milhões de anos, onde o vento, a água e o tempo esculpiram um unusual monumento em arenito vermelho, a que dão o nome de “Chapéu Mexicano”, ou seja, mais propriamente, naquilo a que hoje também chamam ”Rocha do Chapéu Mexicano!.

…already on road #163, which had to take us a little west, but, always heading south, we crossed the San Juan River, which is a significant tributary of the Colorado River, near the “Mexican hat rock”, a place slightly out of the north limit of the Navajo Nation, but where erosion can be observed for millions of years, where the wind, water and time sculpt Red sandstone monument, which name “Mexican Hat”, that is, more properly, in what they also call “Rock of the Mexican Hat!.

…continuando a viajar pela estrada #163, a milhas de distância já  se avistavam as torres doavisando-nos que estávamos perto da fronteira com o estado do Arizona, e claro, dentro da nação Navajo, possuindo um profundo significado cultural e espiritual para este povo, onde parámos para visitar o já mencionado “Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park”, comprando o bilhete antes de entrar no Centro de Boas-Vindas e outras instalações, fazendo algum sol, onde tirámos algumas fotos!.

…continuing to travel along road #163, miles away were already spotted the towers of the “Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park”, warning us that we were near the border with the state of Arizona, and of course, within the Navajo nation, having a deep cultural and spiritual meaning for this people, where we stop to visit the afore mentioned “Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park”, buying the note before facilities, making some sun, where we took some pictures!.

…como acima já mencionámos, o “Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park” encontra-se dentro da reserva da Nação do Navajo, mostrando-nos uma paisagem de tirar o fôlego, com imponentes torres de arenito vermelho, cujas formações maciças aumentam dramaticamente do piso do deserto, algumas com alturas de mais de 1.000 pés, moldadas por milhões de anos de erosão, com vibrantes tons vermelhos do vale que vêm de óxido de ferro na rocha!. É para nós, sem qualquer dúvida representa o oeste definitivo, onde os espíritos ancestrais infundem paisagens rudes e diferentes, que nos parecem estranhas!.

…as we mentioned above, the “Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park” is within the Navajo nation reserve, showing us a breathtaking landscape, with imposing red sandstone towers, whose massive formations increase dramatically from the desert floor, some with heights of more than 1,000 feet, shaped by millions of erosion, with vibrant red tones that come from oxide iron in the rock!. It is for us, without any doubt it represents the definitive West, where ancestral spirits infuse rude and different landscapes that seem strange to us!.

…toda esta área já nos foi apresentada em inúmeros filmes, fotografias e obras de arte, simbolizando o ”Oeste Selvagem”, onde os visitantes podem explorar através de visitas guiadas ou mesmo fazendo caminhadas por trilhas assinaladas, onde entre outras, podem ver. o nascer do sol ou o pôr do sol a lançaram luz mágica e longas sombras no vasto deserto!. O “Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park” continua sendo uma das maravilhas naturais mais icónicas e inspiradoras do sudoeste, situado no planalto do Colorado!.

…this whole area has already been presented to us in numerous movies, photographs and works of art, symbolizing the “Wild West”, where visitors can explore through guided tours or even walking through marked trails, where among others, they can see the sunrise of the sun or sunset they cast it magical light and long shadows in the vast desert!. The “Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park” remains one of the most iconic and inspiring natural wonders of the southwest, located in the Plateau do Colorado!.

…voltando à estrada #163, sempre em direção ao sul, entrámos no estado do Arizona, parando por alguns momentos e fotografando o “Agathla Peak”, que é um remanescente de uma estrutura vulcânica antiga, emaranhada há cerca de aproximadamente 25 milhões de anos!. Tudo o que resta é um plugue vulcânico que severamente tenha sofrido erosão e que consiste em brechas vulcânicas cortadas por diques de uma rocha vulcânica!.

…returning to Road #163, always southwards, we entered the state of Arizona, stopping for a few moments and photographing the “Agathla Peak”, which is a remnant of an old volcanic structure, tangled about 25 million years ago!. All that remains is a volcanic plug that severely suffered erosion and consists of volcanic breaches cut by dikes of a volcanic rock!.

…a temperatura no deserto que era quase todo o território da “Nação Navajo” por onde seguíamos, era alta!. Felizmente connosco levávamos água fresca, fruta e alguma comida ligeira de viagem!. E, aproximando-nos do sul, estávamos junto do “Canyon de Chelly Nacional Monumento”, quepreserva  importantes recursos arqueológicos que abrangem mais de 4.000 anos de ocupação humana!.

…the temperature in the desert that was almost the entire territory of the “Navajo nation” where we followed, it was high!. Fortunately we had fresh water, fruit and some light food food!. And, approaching south, we were with the “Canyon of Chelly National Monument”, which preserves important archaeological resources that cover over 4,000 years of human occupation!. 

…aqui, depois de receber alguma informação no centro de visitas, entrámos no parque, percorrendo-o na sua totalidade, tendo a oportunidade de visitar uma das formações rochosas mais maravilhosas do sudoeste e que poucas pessoas conhecem ou chegam a este destino!. Parecia que éramos os únicos na terra, era um sentimento indescritível ao apreciar o cenário destes desfiladeiros, onde os antigos “Puebloans” encontraram um local ideal para plantar colheitas e criar famílias!.

…here, after receiving some information at the Center of Visits, we entered the park, traveling it in its entirety, having the opportunity to visit one of the most wonderful rock formations in the southwest and that few people know or reach this destination!. It seemed that we were the only ones on Earth, it was an indescribable feeling in enjoying the scenario of these canyons, where the old “Puebloans” found an ideal place to plant harvests and create families!.

…e nós, por ali quase sozinhos, apreciando um cenário de milhões de anos de elevação de terras e corte de riachos que criaram as coloridas paredes do penhasco do “Canyon de Chelly”!. Fontes naturais de água e solo rico forneceram uma variedade de recursos valiosos, aos descendentes dos “Puebloans”, os “Hopi”, quemigraram para estes desfiladeiros para plantar campos de milho e pomares de pêssegos ou plantas e animais que sustentaram famílias por milhares de anos!. 

…and we, almost alone there, enjoying a scenario of millions of years of land elevation and cutting streams that created the colored walls of the “Canyon de Chelly” cliff!. Natural sources of water and rich soil have provided a variety of valuable resources to the descendants of the “Puebloans”, the “Hopi”, who migrated to these canyons to plant corn fields and peaches of peaches or plants and animals that have sustained families for thousands of years!.

…vimos casas esculpidas nas rochas que os primeiros colonos construíram e que foram substituídas por casas mais sofisticadas, à medida que mais famílias migraram para esta área e mais casas foram construídas em alcovas para aproveitar a luz solar e a proteção natural, onde as pessoas prosperaram até meados dos anos de 1300, quando os “Puebloans” deixaram estes desfiladeiros para buscar melhores terras agrícolas nos planaltos a oeste!. Todavia, muitos descendentes dos “Hopi” ainda hoje vivem por aqui e ainda se apegam a muitas das suas tradições!.

…we saw carved houses on the rocks that the first settlers built and which were replaced by more sophisticated houses as more families migrated to this area and more houses were built in alcoves to enjoy sunlight and natural protection, where people thrived until the mid 1300s, when the “Puebloans” left these parales to look for better agricultural lands in the plateaus to the west!. However, many descendants of the “Hopi” still live here and still cling to many of their traditions!.

…deixando este maravilhoso parque, viajámos para norte, para ver uma vez mais, o monumento das “Quatro Esquinas”, ou dos “Quatro Cantos”, depende como lhe queiram chamar, que se situa onde se encontram os estados  de Utah, Arizona, Colorado e New Mexico, sendo o único ponto nos USA compartilhado por quatro estados!. 

…leaving this wonderful park, we traveled to the north, to see once again, the monument of the “four corners”, which is where the states of Utah, Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico are located, being the only point shared by four states!. 

…e como curiosidade, as origens dos limites do estado marcados pelo monumento ocorreram imediatamente antes e durante a guerra civil americana, quando o Congresso dos USA agiu para formar governos na área para combater a disseminação da escravidão para a região, sendo hoje um exemplo de um limite político, que  é um destino turístico por si só, onde os viajantes como nós apreciam visitar!. 

…and as a curiosity, the origins of the monument marked by the monument occurred immediately before and during the American Civil War, when the USA Congress acted to form governments in the area to combat the spread of slavery to the region, being an example of a political limit, which is a tourist destination in themselves, where travelers like us like to visit!. 

…continuando, e como o final do dia se aproximava, já viajando em direção ao leste, ou seja, entrando no estado de Novo Mexico, ainda a milhas de distância e com o sol a esconder-se, nós conduzindo e a nossa dedicada esposa Isaura ia fotografando um monumento de uma formação vulcânica impressionante, imponente e pelo significado cultural do local, que é sagrado para o Povo Navajo, chamada de Shiprock!.

…continuing, and as the end of the day was approaching, already traveling towards the east, that is, entering the state of New Mexico, still miles away and with the sun hiding, we lead and our dedicated wife Isaura was photographing a monument of impressive, imposing volcanic formation and the cultural meaning of the place, which is sacred to the Navajo people, called SHIPROCK!.

…onde é proibido escalar, fazer caminhadas ou chegar à base do Shiprock, pois é um local sagrado, e os visitantes devem respeitar o seu significado cultural. No entanto, de estradas próximas, vale a pena visitar, ver e fotografar o monumento que serve como um marco marcante na região de quatro cantos do Novo México, embora o acesso direto à formação seja restrito para se proteger o seu estado sagrado!. 

…where it is forbidden to climb, walk or reach the base of Shiprock, as it is a sacred place, and visitors must respect its cultural meaning!. However, from nearby roads, it is worth visiting, seeing and photographing the monument that serves as a remarkable milestone in the region of four corners of New Mexico, although direct access to training is restricted to protect its sacred state!. 

…e, já era noite quando chegámos à cidade de Farmington, Novo Mexico, onde pernoitámos num parque de RV, posteriormente reservado!. 

…and it was night when we arrived at the city of Farmington, Novo Mexico, where we stayed overnight in a later reserved RV park!.

…ainda o dia não tinha nascido, já viajávamos na estrada rápida #15, em direcção ao norte!. E quando o dia começou a nascer, e como nos aproximávamos do sul do paralelo 49, ou seja, da zona onde se situa a vila de Saint Mary, que era o nosso destino, (quase na fronteira com o Canadá), o sol, nascendo muito forte e surgindo baixo do lado norte, dificultava-nos a visão!. Como tal, parámos na próxima saída, comprando café, biscoitos e enchendo o tanque com gasolina na nossa “White Fox” (caravana)!. 

…still the day had not been born, we were already traveling on the Interstate #15, towards the north!. And when the day began to be born, and as we approached southern parallel 49, that is, the zone where the village of Saint Mary, which was our destination, (almost on the Canada border), the sun, being very strong and appearing low on the north side, made our vision difficult!. As such, we stopped in the next exit, buying coffee, cookies and filling the tank with gasoline in our “White Fox” (caravan)!. 

…e porquê a vila de Saint Mary?. Porque é lá que começa a histórica estrada que dá pelo nome de Going-to-the-Sun Road, (estrada indo para o sol),  e que atravessa o Glacier National Park, em Montana, que é uma estrada pitoresca de montanha nas Montanhas Rochosas, e é a única estrada que atravessa o Parque Glacier, cruzando a Continental  Divide através de Logan Pass a uma altitude de 6.646 pés, e que nós em viagens anteriores, em pelo menos três vezes a tentámos atravessar, sendo sempre impedidos porque se encontrava encerrada ao público e…, hoje era o nosso destino!.

…and why the village of Saint Mary?. Because this is where the historic road that gives the name of Going-To-The-Sun Road begins, and crossing the Glacier National Park, in Montana, which is a picturesque mountain range road, and is the only road that crosses the Glacier Park, crossing the continental divides through Logan Pass at a 6,646 feet, and we previous trips, at least three times we tried to cross, always being prevented because it was closed to the public and…, today was our destiny!.

…e, o sol pela manhã nasceu forte mas…, desapareceu!. Como tal, nesta histórica estrada que dá pelo nome de Going-to-the-Sun Road, (estrada indo para o sol), não havia sol!.  Havia chuviscos e nevoeiro, às vezes cerrado, mas seguimos viagem,  aproveitando a oportunidade de a estrada se encontrar aberta ao público!.

…and, the sun in the morning was born strong but…, disappeared!. As such, in this historic road that gives the name of Going-To-The-Sun Road, there was no Sun!.  There were drizzle and fog, sometimes closed, but we went on, taking advantage of the opportunity for the road to be open to the public!.

…claro, por algumas horas levámos no pensamento, aquilo que parecia que estávamos viajando pela estrada do sol, que tinha tudo para nos oferecer imagens de montanhas, lagos e desfiladeiros, no entanto e na verdade, apesar de estar-mos no verão e viajando em direcção ao sol, subindo para o seu ponto mais alto, o incrível passe de Logan, o tempo às vezes não parecia muito claro, mesmo que a neve em alguns lugares derivasse da sua altitude, mas ainda tiramos algumas fotos e vimos um urso atravessando a estrada no nevoeiro cerrado!.

…of course, for a few hours we took it in the thought, what it seemed like we were traveling along the Sun Road, which had everything to offer us images of mountains, lakes and canyons, however, and in fact, although we were in summer and traveling to the sun, rising to its highest logon, time sometimes did not seem very clear, even if snow in some places derived from their altitude, we still took some pictures and saw a bear crossing the road in the cerrado fog!.

…originalmente, esta histórica estrada foi construída para promover o turismo e encorajar as pessoas a visitar os parques nacionais dos USA, e na verdade, o objectivo foi alcançado desde a sua conclusão em 1932!.

…originally, this historic road was built to promote tourism and encourage people to visit the US national parks, and in fact, the objective was achieved since its conclusion in 1932!. 

…no marcador da nossa caravana, marcou a distância de 57 milhas do seu começo ao seu fim, que percorremos com algum pormenor, atravessando as Montanhas Rochosas sobre o Continental Divide em Logan Pass, parando dezenas de vezes quando havia oportunidade de espaço próprio para estacionar!. 

…in the marker of our caravan, it marked the distance of 57 miles from its beginning to its end, which we traveled with some detail, crossing the rocky mountains over the continental divides into Logan Pass, stopping dozens of times when there was an opportunity for its own space to park!. 

…onde íamos progredindo  com muito cuidado, porque existiam curvas cegas, subidas ou descidas com algum grau de sensibilidade, nuvens baixas que cobriam a estrada e as montanhas, túneis com alguma água no piso, oriunda das quedas de água dramáticas que em alguns locais nos mostravam vistas amplas, podendo ver-se em algumas ocasiões cabras de montanha pastando em alguns lugares onde até havia flores silvestres em tons de arco-íris!.

…where we were progressing very carefully, because there were blind curves, climbs or descents with some degree of sensitivity, low clouds that covered the road and the mountains, tunnels with some water on the floor, from the dramatic water falls that showed us wide views, and can see each other in some places where there were even wild flowers in shades rainbow!.

…parámos próximo do lago Iceberg, aninhado neste parque, que é um deslumbrante lago alpino cercado por penhascos e icebergs flutuantes, onde mesmo no verão, oferece-nos uma caminhada gratificante através de prados cheios de flores silvestres e terrenos acidentados. É um destino sereno e de tirar o fôlego para os amantes da natureza, e claro, para nós que adoramos caminhar!.  

…we stopped near the iceberg lake, nestled in this park, which is a stunning alpine lake surrounded by floating cliffs and icebergs, where even in summer, offers us a rewarding walk through meadows full of wild flowers and injured land. It is a serene and breathtaking destination for nature lovers, and of course, for us who love to walk!.  

…como acima já explicámos, já tínhamos estado na entrada desta histórica estrada por três vezes, sempre impedidos de entrar porque se encontrava encerrada ao público, como tal,  esta era a quarta tentativa de atravessar o Glacier Nacional Parque, dado que a abertura desta histórica estrada varia anualmente com base nas quedas de neve ou chuva torrencial que provocam avalanches, todavia normalmente abre no final de Junho ou início de Julho, encerrando no final de Setembro, mas devemos ter em atenção que as condições da estrada podem mudar rapidamente!. 

…as we have already explained above, we had been in the entrance of this historic road three times, always prevented from entering because it was closed to the public, as such, this was the fourth attempt to cross Glacier Nacional Park, since the opening of this historic road varies annually based on snowfalls or torrential rain that provoke avalanches, but usually opens at the end of June or early July, but we must have in late September, in view of the road conditions can change quickly!.

…parámos e visitámos uma pequena vila ao lado do maior lago do Parque Nacional Glacier que é o lago McDonald, que tem aproximadamente 10 milhas de comprimento e 464 pés de profundidade e possui um cenário deslumbrante de montanhas e pedras coloridas, quase à saída desta histórica estrada, onde entre outras atrações, existe um hotel e um pequeno porto, onde há barcos de recreio para navegar no extenso e maravilhoso lago, e dizem-nos que é um dos destinos mais populares a oeste do rio Mississippi, atraindo milhares de viajantes, ansiosos para explorar esta bonita paisagem alpina!.

…we stopped and visited a small village next to the largest lake of Glacier National Park, which is the McDonald Lake, which is approximately 10 miles long and 464 feet deep and has a stunning scenario of mountains and colorful stones, almost at the exit of this historic road, where there is a hotel and a small port, where there are recreational boats to navigate the wide and wonderful lake, and one of them are telling us that it is one most popular destinations west of the Mississippi River, attracting thousands of travelers, eager to explore this beautiful alpine landscape!.

…e para finalizar, esta histórica estrada já foi vedeta em diversos filmes de Hollywood e motivo para canções de artistas com algum sucesso!. O dia já ia avançado quando viajámos em direcção ao sul, iniciando uma viajem que podemos chamar de retorno, pois é nossa intenção iniciar lá no oeste/sul, outra odisseia, esta com o nome de: “Wild South West” (Sudoeste selvagem)!. Era quase noite quando paramos para pernoitar num parque de RV, na cidade de Butte, Montana!.

…and finally, this historic road has been a star in several Hollywood movies and a reason for songs by artists with some success!. The day was already advanced when we traveled south, starting a trip we can call a return, because it is our intention to start there in the west/south, another odyssey, with the name of: “Wild South West”!. It was almost night when we stopped to stay overnight in a RV park in the city of Butte, Montana!.

…estávamos no estado de Dakota do Sul, bem situado no coração dos USA, um lugar histórico, uma verdadeira  “jóia do oeste”, bem conhecido por essa distinção, que para nós, é o lar de algumas das histórias mais coloridas que podemos encontrar no oeste americano, pelo menos para quem não adora apenas uma boa história de pioneiros ou de  sobrevivência!. Porquê?.

…we were in the state of South Dakota, well situated in the heart of the USA, a historical place, a true “west jewel”, well known for this distinction, which for us is the home of some of the most colorful stories we can find in the West American, at least for those who don’t just love a good story of pioneers or survival!. Why?.

…porque além de outras razões, Dakota do Sul está marcado para sempre pela exploração precoce de ”Lewis e Clark”, dos anos selvagens da corrida ao ouro na década de 1870 ou pela determinação e espírito dos primeiros pioneiros, que como milhares de outros, escolheram por aqui se estabelecer e desenvolver a terra para o bem do país e da expansão dos seus territórios!.

…because in addition to other reasons, South Dakota is forever marked by the early exploitation of “Lewis and Clark”, the wild years of the Gold Running in the 1870s or the determination and spirit of the first pioneers, which like thousands of others, chose here to establish and develop the land for the good of the country and the expansion of their territories!.

…iniciando uma rota à volta da estrada rápida #90, que nos havia de levar para Oeste, parámos por algum tempo na cidade de Sioux Falls, Dakota do Sul,  aproveitando particularmente a descida do rio Big Sioux e a sua vibrante área que é uma atração popular pelas suas formações rochosas e vistas do rio, que vai caindo sobre uma série de grandes rochas, na área do Falls Park, que inclui uma torre de observação e as ruínas do moinho de abelhas Queen do século XIX!. 

…initially a route around the Interstate #90, which had to take us west, we stopped for some time in the city of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, I take a descendant of the Big Sioux River and its vibrant area that is a popular attraction its rock and views of the river, which is falling on a series of large rocks, in the Falls Park area, which includes a tower of observation and as nineteenth -century ruins!. 

…estas “quedas de água”, são famosas pela sua beleza natural, mesmo ali ao norte do centro da cidade, no já mencionado Falls Park, que é composto por mais de 128 acres ao longo do rio Big Sioux, onde uma média de 7.400 galões de água caem 100 pés ao longo das quedas a cada segundo. Nós, simples visitantes, aproveitámos as quedas, vistas das muitas plataformas de visualização diferentes, incluindo a torre de observação de cinco andares!.

…these “waterfalls” are famous for their natural beauty, to the north of the city center, in the aforementioned Park Falls, which consists of over 128 acres along the Big Sioux River, where an average of 7,400 gallons of water falls 100 feet along the falls every second!. We simple visitors take advantage of the falls, seen from the many different visualization platforms, including the five -story observation tower!.

…seguindo a nossa rota rumo ao oeste, parámos na cidade de Mitchel, South Dakota, visitando o “Palácio de Milho”, anunciado como o “único palácio de milho do mundo” e, na verdade, o “Mitchell Corn Palace”, é uma arena multiusos!. Este edifício mourisco é decorado com arte cultivada, onde os murais e desenhos que cobrem o edifício são feitos de milho e outros grãos, e um novo design é construído a cada ano, sendo o “Palácio de Milho” um destino turístico popular, visitado por até 500.000 pessoas a cada ano!.

…following our route to the west, we stopped in the city of Mitchel, South Dakota, visiting the “corn palace”, announced as the “only corn palace of the world” and, in fact, “Mitchell Corn Palace”, is a multipurpose arena!. This Moorish building is decorated with cultivated art, where murals and designs that cover the building are made of corn and other grains, and a new design is built each year, with the “corn palace” a popular tourist destination, visited by up to 500,000 people each year!.

…a história diz-nos que no final do século XIX, várias cidades das grandes planícies construíram “palácios de cultivo” (também conhecidos como “palácios de grãos”) para se promover a si mesmos e aos seus produtos!. Como tal, servindo a comunidade da cidade de Mitchel, também surgiu um “palácio de grãos”, que ao mesmo tempo é um local para concertos, eventos desportivos, exposições e outros eventos da comunidade e a cada ano, o “Palácio de Milho” é comemorado com um festival em toda a cidade, designado como, “Festival do Palácio de Milho”!. 

…history tells us that in the late nineteenth century, several cities of the great plains built “cultivation palaces” (also known as “grain palaces”) to promote themselves and their products!. As such, serving the community of the city of Mitchel, there was also a “grain palace”, which is at the same time a place for concerts, sports events, exhibitions and other community events and each year, the “Palace of Corn” is celebrated with a festival throughout the city, designated as “festival of the corn palace”. 

…e continuando a nossa rota ruma ao oeste, sempre viajando na estrada rápida #90, surge-nos um ótimo lugar para parar e descansar, após longas horas na estrada e de vistas sobre a planície!. Há aqui muita história para ver e ler sobre a estátua de Sacagawea que é incrível!. Além da estátua, existe um museu, uma grande área de descanso e uma curta passarela para ver o Missouri River!.!. Vendo a estátua de frente, é impressionante!.

…and continuing our route to the west, always traveling on the Interstate #90, we come to us a great place to stop and rest after long hours on the road and sight over the plain!. There is a lot of history here to see and read about the Sacagawea statue that is amazing!. In addition to the statue, there is a museum, a large resting area and a short catwalk to see Missouri River!. Seeing the statue from the front, it’s impressive!.

…a história diz-nos que Sacagawea, na adolescência, ajudou a expedição de “Lewis e Clark” a alcançar seus objetivos de missão, explorando o território da Louisiana, onde Sacagawea viajou com a expedição a milhares de quilómetros desde Dakota do Norte ao Oceano Pacífico, ajudando a estabelecer contactos culturais com o povo dos nativos americanos e contribuindo para o conhecimento da história natural da expedição em diferentes regiões!.

…the story tells us that Sacagawea in adolescence helped the expedition of “Lewis and Clark” to achieve his mission goals, exploring the Louisiana territory, where Sacagawea traveled to the expedition to thousands of kilometers from North Dakota to the Pacific Ocean, helping to establish cultural contacts with the people of American natives and contributing to the knowledge of the expedition’s natural history in different history regions!.

…e a nossa odisseia rumo ao oeste continuava!. Umas milhas mais na estrada rápida #90 e eis-nos num perfeito ambiente do “Oeste Americano”, com “teatro de rua ao vivo” e tudo!. O lugar, no meio de uma planície deserta, dava pelo nome de “1880 Town”!.  Aqui, “os bandidos assaltavam o banco, levando os sacos de ouro, matavam o xerife e os seus ajudantes, aparecendo depois três raparigas bonitas, que por sua vez matavam os bandidos e fugiam em cavalos brancos, com os sacos do ouro!.” Era uma perfeita cena de ”roubar o ouro aos bandidos”!.

…and our Odyssey toward the west was still!. A few miles more on the Interstate #90 and here are a perfect environment of the “West American”, with “live street theater” and everything!. The place, in the middle of a deserted plain, was named “1880 Town”!.  Here, “the bandits robbed the bench, taking the gold bags, killed the sheriff and his helpers, then appeared three beautiful girls, who in turn killed the bad guys and ran away in white horses, with the gold bags!”. It was a perfect scene of “stealing gold to the bad guys”!.

…e a história diz-nos que naquela época, uma empresa de cinema chegou a uma pequena cidade próxima para filmar um filme da era de 1880!. Um conjunto de “rua principal” foi construído a partir de edifícios antigos e várias relíquias e antiguidades indianas!. O inverno instalou-se, as filmagens foram abandonadas e a empresa de cinema voltou para casa, dando a ”Main Street Set” a alguém para o uso dos seus artefactos!. Anos depois, todo este ”set de filmagem”, foi transferido para estes 80 acres e a cidade de 1880 nasceu!.

…and the story tells us that at that time, a movie company came to a small nearby town to film a 1880!. A set of “main street” was built from old buildings and various relics and Indian antiques!. Winter has settled, filming was abandoned and the movie company returned home, giving the “Main Street Set” to someone to use their artifacts!. Years later, all this “set of footage” was transferred to these 80 acres and the city of 1880 was born!.

…continuado sempre na rota do oeste e desviando-nos um pouco para sul, eis-nos na entrada do “Parque Nacional Badlands”, que também se situa em Dakota do Sul, onde as suas paisagens dramáticas abrangem formações rochosas em camadas, desfiladeiros íngremes e torres imponentes, onde habitam bisons, ovelhas bighorn, veados, cães de pradaria, coiotes e raposas, tal como cascavéis da pradaria lá nas suas pastagens amplas!. Embora aparentemente, os Badlands perdem uma polegada a cada ano para erosão. Por outro lado, as colinas negras de 1,6 milhão de anos corroem uma polegada a cada 10.000 anos!.

…always continued on the West Route and diverting us a little south, we are at the entrance of the Badlands National Park, which is also located in South Dakota, where its dramatic landscapes cover rock formations in layers, steep canons and imposing towers, where they live Bisons, Bighorn sheep, deale, coyware and fox dogs and coyotes like there in your wide pastures!. Although apparently, the Badlands lose an inch every year for erosion. On the other hand, the 1.6 million years old black hills run one inch every 10,000 years.

…percorremos a estrada que faz um circuito a quase todo o parque, num passeio que é longo e sinuoso. com desvios para  várias trilhas, com vários centros de visita e ajuda de informação com exibições de fósseis descobertos no parque!. O tempo estava quente de verão, mas as vistas em torno de cada curva e à nossa frente valeram a pena!. Planícies com grama, rochas pintadas, montes amarelos, parecendo-nos tal como viajar por uma paisagem que é estranhamente lunar em uma área, mas com as pastagens familiares em outra!.

…we traveled the road that makes a circuit to almost the entire park, on a walk that is long and winding, with deviations for multiple trails, with various visiting centers and information help with fossil displays discovered in the park!. The weather was hot summer, but the views around each curve and in front of us were worth it!. Plains with grass, painted rocks, yellow hills, looking like traveling through a landscape that is strangely lunar in one area, but with family pastures in another!.

…era já ao final do dia quando pernoitámos num parque de RV, já na cidade de Rapid City, que fica a leste de Black Hills National Forest, no oeste de Dakota do Sul e é conhecida como uma porta de entrada para o Monte Rushmore, a enorme escultura icónica de 4 presidentes dos EUA!.

…it was already at the end of the day when we stayed overnight in a RV park, already in the city of Rapid City, which is east of Black Hills National Forest, in western South Dakota and is known as a gateway to Mount Rushmore, the huge iconic sculpture of 4 US presidents!.

…o que nos torna tão persistentes em viajar…, é que as viagens nunca acabam, só os viajantes acabam!. Como tal, nós veteranos vamos tentando prolongá-las em memórias, em lembranças, em narrativas que constantemente se transformam em imagens que não se dissipam da nossa memória, que agora tentamos descrever…, principalmente para os mais novos!. 

…what makes us so persistent to travel…, is that the trips never end, only the travelers are over!. As such, we veterans are trying to prolong them in memories, memories, narratives that constantly become images that do not dissipate our memory, which we now try to describe…, especially for the younger ones!. 

…como sempre fazemos, ao entrar em qualquer estado, sendo possível com luz do dia, paramos para fotografar a sua placa de  identificação e, também sendo possível, visitar o seu centro de boas vindas, colhendo informação, que sempre é muito útil, para quem como nós, adoramos a história e a natureza!.

…as we always do, when entering any state, being possible with daylight, we stop to photograph your identification plate and, also being possible, to visit its welcome center, gathering information, which is always very useful, for those who like us, we love history and nature!.

..vamos então iniciar a continuação da nossa ”Terceira Expedição ao Antigo Oeste”!. Hoje é o segundo dia que andamos na estrada e…, fazendo algum progresso, lentamente nos aproximando do objectivo que são…, as longas planícies e montanhas, que apesar de ser a época do verão, para lá daquelas pequenas nuvens, existem no cume ou até nos  desfiladeiros daquelas montanhas ainda cobertas com alguma neve, que continuam a encobrir milhões de anos de vida, lá nos estados de Dakota do Sul, Wyoming e Montana!. 

…let’s then start the continuation of our ”third expedition to the old West”!. Today is the second day we walked on the road and…, making some progress, slowly approaching the goal they are…, the long plains and mountains, which despite being the summer time, beyond those small clouds, exist in the summit or even the parales of those mountains still covered with some snow, which continue to cover millions of years of life, there in the states of Dakota do Sul, Wyoming and Montana!. 

…continuando, vindos do estado de Kentucky, entrámos e saímos do estado de Illinois, apelidado de “o estado da pradaria”, numa região plana, marcado por terras agrícolas, florestas, colinas e pântanos, viajando nós por estradas que se cruzam, facilitando os viajantes que seguem para norte, sul, leste ou oeste do território e, com algum tráfico nos levou para oeste, até ao estado de Missouri, onde parámos por algum tempo na cidade de St. Louis!..

…continuing, coming from the state of Kentucky, we entered and left the state of Illinois, nicknamed “The State of the Praise”, in a flat region, marked by agricultural lands, forests, hills and swamps, traveling through roads that go to the north, south, east or west and, with some traffic, and with some traffic, with some traffic, with some traffic. To the state of Missouri, where we stopped for some time in the city of St. Louis!.

…cujo cognome é, “Mother of the West”, (a mãe do oeste), e nós, estacionando a nossa “White Fox” (caravana), na área portuária, quase sem o notar lembrámos aquele musical “Meet Me in St. Louis”, (encontre-me em São Luis), estrelado por Judy Garland, que se passa nesta cidade e conta a história de uma família que não quer sair da cidade, por uma nova vida em Nova York!.

…whose cognome is, “Mother of the West” (the Mother of the West), and we, parking our “White Fox” (caravan), almost without noticing it we reminded that musical “Meet Me in St. Louis”, (find me in São Luis), starring Judy Garland, who is going on in this city and tells the story of a family that does not want to leave the city, a new life in a new life. …não sabemos bem porquê, mas também não queríamos sair da cidade!. Estávamos na área do porto fluvial, que naquela época era o maior porto do rio Mississippi, com a sua população a expandir-se depois da guerra civil Americana, chegando a ser a quarta cidade maior dos USA no século dezanove!.

…we don’t know well why, but we didn’t want to leave town either!. We were in the river port area, which at that time was the largest port of the Mississippi River, with its population to expand after the American Civil War, becoming the fourth largest city of the USA century!.

…onde o monumento ”The Gateway to the West” está localizado no local que é da fundação de St. Louis, na margem oeste do rio Mississippi, sendo a peça central do Parque Nacional Gateway Arch, tornando-se num símbolo internacionalmente reconhecido de St. Louis, bem como um destino turístico popular!.

….e seguindo para oeste a planície continuou, numa região que constitui o estado de Kansas e era habitado por algumas tribos nativas, antes da chegada dos primeiros exploradores Europeus, entre as quais os “Kansa”, daí a origem do nome do estado, onde também existiam os “Osage”, os “Pawnee” e os “Whicita”, que viviam da caça do búfalo e do cultivo de milho, que ainda hoje podemos ver grandes plantações ao lado da estrada!.

…como em toda a história da humanidade, as povoações nasciam com a deslocação das pessoas para outras regiões, alguns procurando uma sobrevivência melhor, outras por outros motivos, como a célebre “Corrida ao Ouro”, parando onde houvesse um rio ou riacho com água e o terreno pudesse ser cultivado, onde houvesse vegetação, pudessem praticar a caça ou a pesca, onde o clima fosse agradável!.

...as in all the history of humanity, the villages were born with people’s displacement to other regions, some seeking better survival, some for other reasons, such as the famous “gold race”, stopping where there was a river or stream with water and the terrain could be cultivated, where there was vegetation, could practice hunting or fishing, where the climate was pleasant!.

…íamos vendo todo este cenário até à cidade de Kansas City, ainda no estado do Missouri, pois existem duas cidades com o nome Kansas City, uma no estado de Missouri, outra no estado de Kansas, onde depois de atravessar a cidade entrámos em  Kansas City, Kansas, regressando de novo Kansas City, Missouri!.

…we were seeing all this scenario to the city of Kansas City, still in the state of Missouri, as there are two cities with the name Kansas City, one in the state of Missouri, one in the state of Kansas, where after crossing the city we entered Kansas City, Kansas, returning again Kansas City, Missouri!.

…viajando agora rumo ao norte pela estrada rápida #29, entrando no estado de Iowa, que está localizado na região centro-oeste do país e que se limita ao norte com o Minnesota, a leste com o Wisconsin e o Illinois, ao sul com o Missouri e a oeste com o Nebrasca e Dakota do Sul!.

…traveling now towards the north along the Rapid Road #29, entering the state of Iowa, which is located in the Midwest region of the country and limited to the north with Minnesota, east with Wisconsin and Illinois, south with Missouri and to the west with Nebrasca and Dakota do Sul!.

…estado do Iowa, onde os primeiros “colonos” a instalaram-se na região, por volta do ano de 1833, cultivavam, além de aveia, legumes ou milho, com que criavam algum gado suíno e bobino e, também nos dizem que os primeiros europeus a explorarem a região que atualmente constitui o estado de Iowa, foram os franceses Louis Joliet e Jacques Marquette, que no longínquo ano de 1673, descreveram a região como verde e fértil!.

…State of Iowa, where the first “settlers” settled it in the region, around 1833, cultivated, in addition to oats, vegetables, with which they raised some pork and coil cattle, and also tell us that the first Europeans to explore the region that currently constitutes the state of Iowa were the French Louis Joliet and Jacques Marquette, which year 1673, they described the region as green and fertile!.

…e devia de ser verdade, porque hoje, podem ver-se grandes áreas de plantações de milho ou soja, ao longo da estrada, que fica um pouco mais alta que essas áreas, onde em algumas partes é mesmo alagadiça, produzindo forte nevoeiro, pelo menos pela parte da manhã!.

…e assim, finalmente entrámos no estado de Dakota do Sul, pernoitando num parque de RV, onde desejávamos ver alguns Parques Nacionais, monumentos e antigas cidades com algum pormenor e, que simboliza as grandes planícies americanas, grandes plantações de trigo, grandes rebanhos de gado bovino, as montanhas de “Black Hills”, localizada no oeste do estado, onde continuam a esculpir o gigante monumento ao chefe dos “Sioux”, Crazy Horse e onde se abriga a principal atração turística do estado, o Monte Rushmore, onde estão esculpidas os bustos de quatro presidentes americanos, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt e Abraham Lincoln!.

…and so, we finally entered the state of Dakota do Sul, staying overnight in a RV park, where we wanted to see some national parks, monuments and old cities with some detail and, which symbolizes the large American plains, large wheat plantations, large flocks of cattle, the “Black Hills” mountains, located in the west of the state, where they continue to sculpt the giant Monument to the chief of “Sioux”, Crazy Horse and where the state’s main tourist attraction is housed, Mount Rushmore, where the busts of four American presidents, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln!.

…ao longo da nossa já longa existência acumulámos inúmeras histórias, as quais nos ajudam a aguentar o tempo, e em parte é esse um dos motivos porque vos vamos contar parte da história desta para nós, “Terceira Expedição ao Antigo Oeste”, que começou saindo do estado da Florida, seguindo uma rota imaginária e transversal que nos levaria ao estado de Montana!.

…throughout our long existence we have accumulated numerous stories, which help us endure time, and in part this is one of the reasons because we will tell you part of the story to us, “Third Expedition to the Old West”, which began leaving the state of Florida, following an imaginary and transverse route that would lead us to the state of Montana!.

…e, deixando a nossa casa no estado da Flórida, tentando fazer uma vez mais um trajecto que apesar de já por diversas vezes termos visitado parte dos 50 estados deste maravilhoso país, alguns só de passagem e, por isto ou por aquilo, os cenários mais icónicos, mesmo jóias escondidas, ainda não tínhamos apreciado ao pormenor e…, esses fomos ver agora!. 

…and, leaving our house in the state of Florida, trying to do once a path that, although several times we have visited part of the 50 states of this wonderful country, some only passing through and, for this or for that, the most iconic scenarios, even hidden jewelry, we had not yet enjoyed detail and…, we went now!. 

…foi simples, mesmo muito simples!. Viajámos em direcção ao oeste, um pouco antes de começar uma curva para norte, depois outra vez para oeste, mas sempre no sentido norte até ao estado de Montana, viajando, dormindo e às vezes cozinhando, ou frequentando alguns restaurantes económicos em localidades rurais, usufruindo do conforto limitado da nossa “White Fox” (caravana), enquanto íamos vendo coisas novas e conhecendo novas pessoas!.

…it was simple, even very simple!. We traveled to the west, just before starting a north turn, then again west, but always north to the state of Montana, traveling, sleeping and sometimes cooking, or frequenting some economic restaurants in rural locations, enjoying the limited comfort of our “White Fox” (caravan), while we were seeing new things!.

…o destino era o “oeste do antigamente”, ainda um pouco selvagem, principalmente em Arizona, Novo México, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Dakota do Sul e Montana!. Como tal, foi tempo de quase nos ir “despedir”, tentando sempre seguir ao lado das montanhas, decidindo sempre por percorrer o caminho mais lento e panorâmico possível, para atrasar ao máximo o fim inevitável de ter que deixar este maravilhoso cenário!.

…the destination was the “west of the old”, still a little wild, especially in Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, South Dakota and Montana!. As such, it was time to almost “say goodbye”, always trying to follow the mountains, always deciding to go through the slowest and panoramic path possible, to make the most of the inevitable end of having to leave this wonderful scenario!.

…onde em algumas aldeias, ainda havia algumas cenas de “teatro de rua ao vivo”, em lugares históricos do oeste, onde “os bandidos assaltavam o banco, levando os sacos de ouro, matavam o xerife e os seus ajudantes, aparecendo depois três raparigas bonitas, que por sua vez matavam os bandidos e fugiam em cavalos brancos, com os sacos do ouro!.” Era uma perfeita cena de roubar o ouro aos bandidos!.

…where in some villages, there were still some scenes of “live street theater” in historic places of the west, where “the bandits robbed the Bank,, taking the gold bags, killed the sheriff and his helpers, then appeared three beautiful girls, who in turn killed the bad guys and fled in white horses, with the Gold Bakes!.” It was a perfect scene of stealing gold to the bad guys!.

…uau…, sentimo-nos uns abençoados pelas belezas que a natureza nos mostra!. Vamos de novo para oeste onde mais se vê a história do “oeste do antigamente”, onde sempre tentámos descobrir um lugar e desvendar a sua história, ou seja, conhecer o seu povo e os seus costumes!. 

…wow…, we feel some blessed by the beauties that nature shows us!. Let’s go to west again where the history of the “west of the old” is most seen, where we have always tried to discover a place and unravel its history, that is, to know its people and its customs!. 

…neste primeiro resumo, num dia de sol e chuviscos, iniciando  uma aventura de aproximadamente 7.000 milhas, viajando com uma velocidade controlada, (em algumas áreas as estradas iam sempre cheias e isto faz-nos pensar que as viagens nunca acabam), todavia continuávamos a viajar sem qualquer anomalia!.

…in this first summary, on a sunny day and drizzle, starting an adventure of approximately 7,000 miles, traveling with a controlled speed, (in some areas the roads were always full and this makes us think that the trips never end), but we kept traveling without any anomaly!.

…passando pelo estado da Georgia, com um intenso tráfico na região de Atlanta, entrando com uma velocidade moderada nas montanhas do Tennessee e, ainda antes de atravessar a ponte do rio Ohio, fomos acampar num parque de RV, já no estado de Kentucky, com algumas paragens de rotina para abastecimento de gasolina, exercícios de manutenção, tal como uma alimentação simples e controlada!. 

…passing through the state of Georgia, with intense trafficking in the Atlanta region, entering a moderate speed in the Tennessee mountains and, even before crossing the Ohio River bridge, we went to camp in a RV park, already in the state of Kentucky, with some routine stops for gasoline supply, maintenance exercises, such as simple and controlled feeding!.
