…a manhã estava com céu azul e a temperatura agradável para o mês de Janeiro que tem sido um pouco frio no norte leste da Flórida!. Havia a notícia de que foram encontrados Manatees gêmeos no “Blue Spring State Park” que é um parque formado por uma trilha que segue ao lado do rio Waihou e serpenteia por um pântano, regenerando florestas nativas, abastecidas pelos 104 milhões de galões de água com uma temperatura de 72 graus!.

…the morning was with blue skies and a pleasant temperature for the month of January, which has been a little cold in the north east of Florida!. There was news that twin Manatees were found in the “Blue Spring State Park” which is a park formed by a trail that follows the side of the Waihou River and winds through a swamp, regenerating native forests, supplied by the 104 million gallons of water with a temperature of 72 degrees!.

…que surgem à superfície, vindas de uma nascente natural subterrânea, incrivelmente clara, filtrada de todas as impurezas vinda de uma profundidade de 120 pés, e que ninguém sabe de onde vem toda essa água!. É a mãe natureza em toda a sua plenitude!.

…that come to the surface, coming from a natural underground spring, incredibly clear, filtered of all impurities from a depth of 120 feet, and nobody knows where all that water comes from!. It is mother nature in all its fullness!.

…resultado!. É o paraíso, sobretudo para os Manatees, que não toleram temperaturas de água inferiores a 68 graus por longos períodos de tempo e, durante o inverno procuram santuários de águas mais quentes como o “Blue Spring State Park”!. 

…result!. It is paradise, especially for the Manatees, who cannot tolerate water temperatures below 68 degrees for long periods of time and, during the winter, they seek sanctuaries of warmer waters such as the “Blue Spring State Park”!.

…à entrada do parque havia o letreiro de que tinham sido vistas nessa manhã 399 Manatees, para uma população de aproximadamente 700 que normalmente por aqui são encontradas!. E mais, alguns pesquizadores confirmam que uma mãe Manatee está criando um par raro de gêmeos, dizendo que eles têm exatamente o mesmo tamanho, e é por isso que realmente acreditam que são gêmeos!.

…at the entrance to the park there was a sign that 399 Manatees had been seen that morning, for a population of approximately 700 that are normally found here!. What’s more, some researchers confirm that a Manatee mother is raising a rare pair of twins, saying that they are exactly the same size, which is why they really believe they are twins!.

 …no momento da nossa visita, um helicóptero de uma estação de televisão andava no ar, talvez surpreendidos com o movimento que circulava ao redor com visitantes onde nos incluíamos, e que eram compostos sobretudo por crianças que recebiam classes dos professores que os acompanhavam, segurando nas mãos questionários onde iam marcando o que viam!.

…at the time of our visit, a helicopter from a television station was in the air, perhaps surprised by the movement that circled around with visitors, including us, and who were mainly composed of children who received classes from the teachers who accompanied them, holding in their hands questionnaires where they were marking what they saw!.

…nós também vimos e pareciam tal qual, todavia um pouco à frente também surgiam outros exemplares que nos pareciam os anteriores já mencionados!.

…era agradável toda esta excitação nas crianças e, sem qualquer dúvida esta mãe Manatee, uma fêmea em idade reprodutiva, com talvez 900 libras, que possivelmente teve os seus filhotes durante o verão, vinda do rio St. Johns para este santuário de águas mais quentes de quase meia milha do “Blue Spring State Park”, onde passa a maior parte do seu tempo devido como anteriormente já mencionámos, à temperatura mais quente da água!.

…it was nice all this excitement in the kids, and without a doubt this mother Manatee, a female of reproductive age, perhaps 900 pounds, who possibly had her young over the summer from the St. Johns River to this sanctuary of warmer waters of almost half a mile from the “Blue Spring State Park”, where she spends most of her time due as previously mentioned, to the warmer temperature of the water!.

…nós simples visitantes, estamos hesitantes em dizer que são gêmeos, porque obviamente cremos que ninguém os viu nascer, mas que estes dois filhotes são exatamente do mesmo tamanho e estão sempre com a mesma mãe, e vêm e vão juntos, é verdade, porque vimos!.

…we simple visitors are hesitant to say that they are twins, because obviously we believe that nobody saw them born, but that these two puppies are exactly the same size and are always with the same mother, and they come and go together, it is true, because saw!.

…resumindo, passámos uma agradável manhã, num ambiente de água e floresta tropical, percorrendo este passadiço em madeira, com entradas para observatórios junto à água, vendo também outros animais e aves no seu território ainda selvagem!.

…in short, we spent a pleasant morning, in an environment of water and tropical forest, walking this wooden walkway, with entrances to observatories next to the water, also seeing other animals and birds in their still wild territory!.

…pela manhã tínhamos caminhado no trail do canal!. Chegados a casa a nossa dedicada esposa Isaura mostra-nos um vídeo postado pelo escritório do xerife local mostrando uma baleia “orca assassina”, deitada de lado na praia enquanto as ondas batiam nela, dizendo-nos que a queria ir ver!.

…in the morning we had walked on the canal trail)!. Arriving home, our dedicated wife Isaura shows us a video posted by the local sheriff’s office showing a “killer orca” whale, lying on its side on the beach while the waves beat it, telling us that he wanted to go see it!.

…andando pelo estado do Alaska e navegando por um canal de água salgada, já tínhamos visto algumas baleias “orcas assassinas” saltando fora da água e, diziam-nos que estes animais estão entre os maiores e mais poderosos mamíferos marinhos do oceano!. Como tal dicidimos ir vê-la!.

…walking through the state of Alaska and navigating through a saltwater channel, we had already seen some “killer killer whales” jumping out of the water and, we were told that these animals are among the largest and most powerful marine mammals in the ocean!. As such we decided to go see her!.

…porque estas “orcas assassinas” são o maior membro da família dos golfinhos e são o principal predador do oceano, estimando-se que existam apenas 50.000 orcas em todo o mundo, vivendo em todos os oceanos, mas são mais abundantes em águas mais frias como a Antártica, Noruega ou Alasca, mas às vezes também são encontradas em águas tropicais e subtropicais!.

…because these “killer killer whales” are the largest member of the dolphin family and are the ocean’s top predator, with an estimated only 50,000 killer whales in the world, living in all oceans but more abundant in colder waters such as Antarctica, Norway or Alaska, but are sometimes also found in tropical and subtropical waters!.

…fomos para lá!. A rua de ascesso à praia (Jungle Hut Road) foi fechada para o tráfego, mas com autorização e recomendação para obedecer às ordens do pessoal encarregue pela operação de remover o animal, que eram especialistas de uma equipa do SeaWorld Research Institute, da Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, que trabalhavam árduamente no controle das escavadoras, carregadores compactos e mão de obra que envolviam várias dezenas de pessoas para levar a baleia para fora da praia!.

…we went there!. The access road to the beach (Jungle Hut Road) was closed to traffic, but with authorization and recommendation to obey the orders of the personnel in charge of the operation to remove the animal, who were specialists from a team from the SeaWorld Research Institute, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, who worked hard to control the excavators, compact loaders and labor that involved several dozen people to take the whale off the beach!.

…assistimos a tudo, fazendo parte da concentração da multidão que veio para ver a baleia, ao lado de várias equipas de comunicação social que utilizavam drones e máquinas de filmar potentes!.

…we watched everything, being part of the concentration of the crowd that came to see the whale, alongside several social communication teams using drones and powerful filming machines!.

…esta baleia, uma fêmea adulta “orca assassina” gigante de 21 pés, (6,4 metros) pesando cerca de 3 toneladas e meia, (7.000 libras) morreu depois de encalhar na praia, sendo a primeira baleia assassina encalhada no sudeste dos USA, havendo muito interesse em tentar fazer uma amostragem extensiva para determinar, porquê ela talvez podesse ter ficado doente e porque encalhou, porque parecia que ainda estava viva, mas morreu antes que uma equipe chegasse para ajudar!.

…this whale, a giant 21-foot (6.4-metre) adult female “killer orca” weighing about 3.5 tons (7,000 pounds) died after running aground on the beach, the first killer whale beached in the southeastern United States, with much interest in trying to do an extensive sampling to determine why she might have gotten sick and why she ran aground, because it looked like she was still alive, but died before a team arrived to help!.

…e lá seguiu devidamente acomodada num camião, para o laboratório do SeaWolrd Research Institute na cidade de Orlando, para que a sua carcassa seja analizada e se descubra o motivo porque por aqui encalhou e a causa da sua morte!. E nós, regressámos a casa um pouco tristes pela perda de mais um destes animais que…, cada vez vão sendo mais raros!.

…and there it was properly accommodated in a truck, to the laboratory of the SeaWolrd Research Institute in the city of Orlando, so that its carcass is analyzed and the reason why it ran aground here and the cause of its death!. And we returned home a little saddened by the loss of another one of these animals that…, are becoming rarer and rarer!.

…era a névoa do mar que desceu ao canal!. Não havia sol e os pássaros chilreavam nas árvores, não querendo voar pelo céu cinzento e nós, caminhando ao longo do canal, o cenário era de outra manhã de nevoeiro!. 

…it was the sea mist that descended to the channel!. There was no sun and the birds were chirping in the trees, not wanting to fly across the gray sky and we, walking along the canal, the scenery was of another foggy morning!.

…sussurrámos para a nossa dedicada esposa Isaura, companheira por mais de cinquenta anos, abrindo os braços e bem dizendo o nevoeiro, que adoramos!. Ela balançou a cabeça dizendo, “talvez o nevoeiro faça bem às dores que vou sentindo nas pernas”!.

…we whispered to our dedicated wife Isaura, companion for more than fifty years, opening our arms and well saying the fog, that we love!. She shook her head saying, “maybe the fog will be good for the pain I’m feeling in my legs”!.

…todo este cenário não era mais do que uma névoa de evaporação porque uns dias antes tinham sido frios e com o aquecimento normal do ambiente, aquela neblina era o resultado da sua condensação perto da água do canal, que gerava um cenário de nevoeiro!.

…tthis whole scenario was nothing more than an evaporation mist because the days before had been cold and with the normal heating of the environment, that mist was the result of its condensation near the water of the channel, which generated a fog scenario!.

…onde uma forte neblina por toda parte do caminho ia cobrindo tudo num vasto manto branco e engolindo o maravilhoso cenário que normalmente vemos com céu azul!. 

…where a strong fog everywhere covered everything in a vast white mantle and swallowed the wonderful scenery that we usually see with blue skies!.

…era um fantasma branco que segurava aquela manhã de nevoeiro, onde alguém passando por nós disse, “bom dia, não gosto, odeio nevoeiro”!. Nós rimos baixinho porque como acima já mencionámos, gostamos de nevoeiro, daquela névoa misteriosa, magnífica e silenciosa que pinta cada objecto no seu caminho com um tom cinza esfumaçado!.

…it was a white ghost that held that foggy morning, where someone passing by us said, “Good morning, I don’t like it, I hate fog”!. We laughed softly because, as mentioned above, we like fog, that mysterious, magnificent and silent mist that paints every object in its path with a smoky gray tone!.

 …já quase no final da nossa caminhada, o nevoeiro ia desaparecendo e o sol abria o seu caminho através da névoa, limpando-a, indo ficando claro e visível e nós, agora era quem agradecíamos à Mãe Natureza, que também ia limpando alguma névoa que com a idade, vai existindo dentro de nós!. 

…almost at the end of our walk, the fog was disappearing and the sun opened its way through the mist, cleaning it, becoming clear and visible and we, now, were the ones who thanked Mother Nature, who was also clearing some fog (which with age, will exist within us!.

…e, logo pela noite a lua vai brilhar alta, tal como o sol que virá pela madrugada, dando-nos a inevitável maturidade que culminará nesta já prolongada e adorada velhice!. 

…and, soon at night the moon will shine high, just like the sun that will come at dawn, giving us the inevitable maturity that will culminate in this already prolonged and beloved old age!.

…a mãe natureza às vezes fica zangada, fazendo explodir na véspera do Natal um frio tão gelado aqui no norte e centro da Flórida, só comparado com aquele que existe lá no Alaska, e claro, recebemos uma rodada de frio que nos dizem que foi a mais fria dos últimos anos!. Foi uma frente fria…, mesmo muito fria, trazendo consigo aquele potencial frio a que resistimos por algumas décadas quando viviamos no norte!. Foi o resultado de uma tremenda tempestade de inverno no nordeste, que arrastou uma frente muito fria do Ártico até aqui ao “Sunshine State”!. 

…mother nature sometimes gets angry, causing a blast on Christmas Eve so icy cold here in north and central Florida, only compared to that there is in Alaska, and of course, we get a round of cold that we are told it was the coldest in recent years!. It was a cold front…, even very cold, bringing with it that cold potential that we resisted for a few decades when we lived in the north!. It was the result of a tremendous winter storm in the northeast, which dragged a very cold front from the Arctic here to the “Sunshine State”!.

…continuando e resumindo um pouco do que foi para nós o ano de 2022, concluímos que a desumanização da sociedade continua uma realidade, parecendo que somos todos ilhas à deriva e…, de todas aquelas histórias que armazenámos nesta já longa vida de oito décadas, poderíamos contar outras histórias de há cinquenta, trinta ou de um passado recente ou até mesmo de antes dos vinte!. Com toda a certeza que teríamos inumeráveis narrativas para sair do buraco, que é o armazém da nossa existência!. 

…continuing and summarizing a bit of what the year 2022 was for us, we conclude that the dehumanization of society is still a reality, it seems that we are all islands adrift and…, of all those stories that we have stored in this already long life of eight decades, we could tell other stories from fifty, thirty or the recent past or even before twenty!. We would certainly have countless narratives to get out of the hole, which is the storehouse of our existence!.

…no entanto, vamos falar do presente e, como sempre vivemos na ânsia de permanecer livres, longe de possíveis egoísmos, palavras rudes ou frias, ou até daqueles silêncios de uma solidão despida de gente, onde infelizmente quase já não existem crianças e…, embora não tendo nexo, mas é do sem nexo que vivemos ultimamente e são elas, as crianças, que pagam o preço mais elevado!.

…however, let’s talk about the present and, as we always live in the eagerness to remain free, far from possible selfishness, rude or cold words, or even those silences of a solitude devoid of people, where unfortunately there are almost no children anymore and…, although there are no having a connection, but it is the nonsense that we have been living lately and it is they, the children, who pay the highest price!.

…sentir-nos-iamos menos cobardes nos dias de hoje, ao presenciar uma realidade que até parece que é desconhecida, mas que infelizmente continua a andar por aí e que a todos envolve por uma zangada revolta de quem nos sustenta…, que é a mãe natureza, neste planeta magnífico chamada Terra, assim, somos obrigados a prosseguir mencionando sempre aquilo que julgamos que não é tão justo aos nossos olhos!. 

…we would feel less cowardly these days, when witnessing a reality that seems to be unknown, but that unfortunately continues to walk around and that involves everyone in an angry revolt of those who support us…, which is the Mother Nature, on this magnificent planet called Earth, so we are forced to continue by always mentioning what we think is not so fair in our eyes!.

…e, nesta já longa idade, sabemos que não se pode viver com medo, porque nos faz imaginar o que ainda não aconteceu e vamos sofrer em dobro, assim, também é preciso relaxar um pouco, tentando aproveitar os pequenos momentos da vida e agradecer por tudo o que temos, mas se olharmos pelos vidros da janela, os dias parecem-nos mais cinzentos e o alerta não é nosso, é de muitas instituições de bem fazer!. E, não somos nós que o dizemos, é o Papa Francisco, que alertou  durante a homilia da Missa do Galo celebrada na Basílica de São Pedro, para a existência de uma humanidade insaciável de dinheiro, poder e prazer que devora os mais fracos e provoca as guerras!.

…and, in this already long age, we know that we cannot live in fear, because it makes us imagine what has not yet happened and we will suffer twice as much, so we also need to relax a little, trying to enjoy the small moments of life and be grateful for everything we have, but if we look through the window panes, the days seem grayer to us and the alert is not ours, it is that of many institutions of good doing!. And, it is not us who say it, it is Pope Francis, who warned during the homily of the Midnight Mass celebrated in Saint Peter’s Basilica,for the existence of an insatiable humanity of money, power and pleasure that devours the weakest and provokes wars!.

…o ano velho está quase a passar, no entanto, infelizmente vamos continuar a ver algumas personalidades com responsabilidade para nos governar a perder a inteligência e a consciência moral e…, aqueles bons costumes do antigamente, vão continuar dissolvidos e em debandada e os bons princípios corrompidos, porque as pessoas na sua normal prática de vida, agora têm por única direcção…, a conveniência!.

…the old year has already passed, however, unfortunately we will continue to see some personalities with responsibility to govern us to lose intelligence and moral conscience and…, those good customs of the past, will continue dissolved and in rout and the good ones corrupted principles, because people in their normal practice of life, now have convenience as their only direction!.

…em suma, já quase ninguém se respeita!. Não há nenhuma solidariedade entre os cidadãos e ninguém crê na honestidade dos homens!. Alguns agiotas tiram vantagem do sistema e exploram, subindo o preço dos bens excenciais quando vamos ao super-mercado, alterando o custo de vida!. Assim, principalmente a classe onde nos inserimos, que são os idosos, ignora-se e tenta-se abater progressivamente!.

…in short, almost nobody respects themselves anymore!. There is no solidarity between citizens and no one believes in the honesty of men!. Some moneylenders take advantage of the system and exploit it, raising the price of essential goods when we go to the supermarket, changing the cost of living!. Thus, mainly the class we belong to, which are the elderly, is ignored and tries to be progressively slaughtered!.

…o desprezo pelas pessoas, principalmente os idosos, aumenta em cada dia, parecendo que vivemos todos ao acaso numa perfeita e absoluta indiferença de cima a baixo!. Toda a vida espiritual e até intelectual já não existe, porque o medo e até o tédio, invadiram todas as almas e a pouca mocidade que ainda existe, arrasta-se envelhecida pelas mesas e esplanadas dos cafés, sem falarem uns com os outros, entretidos no telemóvel com internet!.

…the contempt for people, especially the elderly, increases every day, it seems that we all live at random in a perfect and absolute indifference from top to bottom!. All spiritual and even intellectual life no longer exists, because fear and even boredom have invaded all souls and the little youth that still exists, dragging themselves aged around the tables and terraces of cafes, without talking to each other, entertained on mobile phone with internet!.

…e para finalizar e voltando aos idosos que presentemente vivem da sua reforma, porque trabalharam quando novos, às vezes consideram o estado como um quase ladrão, porque na sua acção fiscal não tem qualquer contemplação na colecta dos impostos, autorizando, sobretudo os bancos e as companhias de seguro a aumentar os seus prémios, sempre que o entendam, tornando ainda mais miserável a vida, sobretudo de nós, os idosos!.

…and finally, and returning to the elderly who are currently living off their retirement, because they worked when they were young, sometimes they consider the state to be almost thief, because in its fiscal action it does not have any contemplation in the collection of taxes, authorizing, above all, banks and Insurance companies increasing their premiums whenever they see fit, making life even more miserable, especially for us elderly people!.

…numa das nossas viajens pelo norte, muito perto do Canadá, numa estrada quase remota e em determinado cruzamento onde havia estação de abastecimento, parámos para comprar água, biscoitos e gasolina!. Vimos algumas pessoas, mesmo casais, alguns com crianças, “à boleia”!. Era no verão, a temperatura estava quente, distribuimos algumas garrafas de água que comprámos!. 

…on one of our trips through the north, very close to Canada, on an almost remote road and at a certain intersection where there was a filling station, we stopped to buy water, biscuits and gasoline!. We saw some people, even couples, some with children, “hitchhiking”!. It was summer, the temperature was hot, we distributed some bottles of water that we bought!.

…eram simpáticos, falámos com um casal, que nos pediu boleia, todavia não havia espaço na caravana, onde só existem dois lugares sentados e com cinto de segurança!. Disseram-nos que andavam na estrada há muito tempo e não tinham pressa de chegar de novo ao estado do Alabama, de onde eram oriundos!.

…they were friendly, we spoke to a couple, who asked us for a ride, however there was no space in the caravan, where there are only two seats with seat belts!. They told us that they had been on the road for a long time and were in no hurry to get back to the state of Alabama, where they came from!.

…como nós também gostamos da aventura, falámos um pouco, perguntando se podíamos ajudar monetáriamente, querendo saber alguns pormenores!. Disseram que tinham começado a aventura de percorrer o território dos USA, no princípio do ano, mesmo no dia 1 de Janeiro e até à data em que os encontrámos, eram felizes “o suficiente”, aceitávam o que lhe quizéssemos dar, que o usariam “o suficiente” e os dias também iam passando…, vivendo “o suficiente”!. 

…as we also like the adventure, we talked a little, asking if we could help monetaryly, wanting to know some details!. They said that they had started the adventure of traveling through the USA, at the beginning of the year, even on the 1st of January and until the date we found them, they were happy “enough”, they accepted whatever we wanted to give them, that they would use it “enough” and the days were passing by…, living “enough”!.

…sempre que falavam mencionavam a palavra “suficiente”!. Eram pessoas simples, pareciam não ter “ganância”, queriam viver o “dia a dia”, usar o que o mundo lhes podesse dar, contentando-se com o tal “suficiente”!.

…whenever they spoke, they mentioned the word “enough”!. They were simple people, they seemed to have no “greed”, they wanted to live “day by day”, use what the world could give them, settling for “enough”!.

…para nós, agora já nesta idade um pouco avançada, foi uma das histórias mais fascinantes que ouvimos!. É o que pretendemos da vida, viver os dias o melhor possível, consumindo “o suficiente”, sem exageros, para que a natureza nos facilite “comida suficiente” e o sistema, principalmente de saúde seja bom o “o suficiente” não só para nós, como para todos no mundo, principalmente para as crianças!.

…for us, now at this slightly advanced age, it was one of the most fascinating stories we have heard!. It is what we intend in life, to live our days as best as possible, consuming “enough”, without exaggeration, so that nature provides us with “enough food” and the system, especially in terms of health, is good “enough” not only for us, as for everyone in the world, especially for children!.

…nos últimos anos, periódicamente fazemos o “trail da água”, que é como carInhosamente chamamos a um pequeno circuito composto pela praia e pelas ondas de água salgada do oceano Atlântico, onde por vezes alguns golfinhos tendem em aparecer!. E caminhando, umas vezes dentro d’água, outras pela areia, passamos por um canal entre duas ilhas barreira e o continente, ligando o Oceano Atlântico e o extremo sul do Rio Matanzas, que é o paraíso de muitas aves selvagens!.

…in recent years, we periodically make the “water trail”, which is how we affectionately call a small circuit made up of the beach and the salt water waves of the Atlantic Ocean, where sometimes some dolphins tend to appear!. And walking, sometimes in the water, sometimes on the sand, we pass through a channel between two barrier islands and the mainland, connecting the Atlantic Ocean and the southern end of the Matanzas River, which is a paradise for many wild birds!.

…o nome da praia, para muitas pessoas não é lá muito bonito!. Chama-se Matanzas?. Matanzas, é uma área onde desagua o Rio Matanzas, cuja entrada não é estabilizada por molhes e, o governo federal, não deixa fazer obras, colocar pedras ou fazer molhes de protecção, por tal, a configuração da praia e sua área, modifica-se conforme as tempestades tropicais por aqui passam, formando pequenos lagos, outras vezes extensos areais, outras vezes derrubando árvores que, por aqui ficam segurando as dunas de areia, cujas raíses voltam a florescer, criando uma vegetação que poderá viver por anos, ou só até à próxima tempestade tropical!.

…the name of the beach, for many people it is not very beautiful!. Is it called Matanzas?. Matanzas, is an area where the Matanzas River flows, whose entrance is not stabilized by breakwaters and, the federal government, does not allow works to be carried out, to place stones or to build protection breakwaters, therefore, the configuration of the beach and its area, modified if as the tropical storms pass through here, forming small lakes, sometimes extensive sandy beaches, sometimes knocking down trees that, around here, are holding the sand dunes, whose roots flourish again, creating a vegetation that can live for years, or just until the next tropical storm!.

…neste momento o ascesso à praia está fechado para se reparar os estragos feitos nas dunas e nos passadiços, pela Tempestade Tropical Nicole, de Novembro passado,que evoluiu para a categoria de furacão antes de atingir a nossa costa Atlântica!. Assim, entramos e saímos pelo lado da baía do Rio Matanzas, que como acima já explicámos, usufruímos de uma vista previlegiada!.

…caminhando devagar, passámos por baixo da ponte, fomos ver a praia, ver a cor da água salgada que se enrola, formando pequenas ondas que deslizam até às dunas de areia!. O céu azul, proporciona um cenário digno de um quadro pintado, demonstrando que ainda existe “natureza”, alguma selvagem, onde as aves de arribação, que começam a deslocar-se para sul, fazem deste maravilhoso local, que é a entrada no continente do Rio Matanzas, num dos sítios mais deslumbrantes e naturais da costa Atlântica, no estado da Flórida!.

…esta área está sempre sujeita a mudanças e, como exemplo, existem mapas históricos feitos por militares espanhóis no século XVIII, que nos mostram que a enseada hoje se deslocou muitas centenas de metros para sul, do que era a sua localização durante a época do Império Espanhol!.

…mas continuando, a nossa dedicada esposa Isaura encontrou um pequeno búzio, coberto pelas águas revoltas de anos, talvez séculos, de ventos do norte e tempestades oceânicas, onde navegaram barcos de corsários, que davam à costa, na procura, entre outras coisas, talvez esconderem arcas que continham tesouros, que eram o espólio da pilhagem de algumas aldeias da costa marítima do mar das Caraíbas!.

…but still, our dedicated wife Isaura found a small whelk, covered by the turbulent waters of years, perhaps centuries, of northerly winds and oceanic storms, where corsair boats sailed, which landed on the coast, in search, among other things, of perhaps hiding chests that contained treasures, which were the spoils of the looting of some villages on the maritime coast of the Caribbean Sea!.

…infelizmente não havia pessoas!. A praia estava deserta, naquele momento, a água do oceano era azul, fazendo diversos desenhos no areal, querendo levar consigo alguma areia, pequenas pedras, conchas e búzios, que entendia que eram suas, levando-as de volta ao oceano!.

…unfortunately there were no people!. The beach was deserted, at that moment, the ocean water was blue, making several drawings on the sand, wanting to take some sand, small stones, shells and whelks, which he understood were his, taking them back to the ocean!.

…todavia nós, seguíamos caminhando se possível pela água, as gaivotas e as garças, voavam ao sentirem a nossa presença próxima e, onde devia haver água, havia um grande areal, aqui e ali, pequenas áreas mais fundas onde um qualquer pequeno cardume de peixe miúdo se sentia aflito por ter ficado ali, preso a ver a água a desaparecer!.

…caminhando por aqui e, não é muito simples de explicar, mas ao longo dos anos, a vida dá-nos muitas razões para meditar-mos e fazer alguma busca na nossa alma, numa  reflexão silenciosa, talvez parando por momentos e ler a nossa história, deixando que tudo seja mais simples e transparente, pois este maravilhoso cenário representa a natureza ainda pura, que felizmente o homem não pode alterar!.

…era tal qual como quando no passado o “circo vinha à cidade” e, recomendávam-nos chegar cedo para evitar correrias!. Depois procurar um lugar disponível, explorando ambos os lados do Intracoastal Waterway, (canal de água salgada), que passa perto do lugar onde vivemos!.

…as pessoas em romaria, aproximavam-se, levando uma cadeira portátil ou qualquer outro utensílio que lhes podesse dar algum conforto enquanto esperavam pelo maravilhoso defile de barcos iluminados!.  É um espectáculo incrível poder admirar o cenário dos barcos passando, as pessoas aplaudindo, tirando fotos, ouvindo a música do Pai Natal, as decorações de alguns com as luzes sentilando e, quando os aplausos eram maiores, o capitão fazia soar aquele som característico dos barcos do mar!.

…people in pilgrimage, approached, taking a portable chair or any other utensil that could give them some comfort while they waited for the wonderful defile of illuminated boats!. It is an incredible spectacle to be able to admire the scenery of the boats passing by, people applauding, taking pictures, listening to Santa Claus music, the decorations of some with the lights being felt and, when the applause was bigger, the captain made that characteristic sound of the sea ​​boats!.

…chegamos ao canal ainda de dia, a noite chegou e a lua apareceu, iluminando um pouco o cenário e, na companhia da nossa dedicada esposa Isaura, levando um lanche, água e algum equipamento fotográfico, juntámo-nos às centenas, talvez milhares de pessoas, alinhadas nos mais escondidos lugares entre árvores e arbustos, algumas empoleiradas em pequenos precipícios, quase em contacto com a água, testemunhando ao longo do canal, as luzes, a música e as decoracões de Natal que os barcos participantes levavam, saindo da Bacia de Cimmaron, navegavam vagarosamente rumo ao sul!.

…we arrived at the canal while it was still daylight, night came and the moon appeared, illuminating the scenery a little and, in the company of our dedicated wife Isaura, taking a snack, water and some photographic equipment, we joined the hundreds, perhaps thousands of people, lined up in the most hidden places among trees and bushes, some perched on small precipices, almost in contact with the water, witnessing along the canal, the lights, music and Christmas decorations that the participating boats carried, leaving the Basin from Cimmaron, sailed slowly towards the south!.

…era o 39.º Desfile Anual de Barcos de Férias de Palm Coast, com um número sem precedentes de setenta e quatro barcos registrados e já considerado o maior desfile de barcos comunitários do estado da Flórida que passando pelas Tidelands, Marina Cove, Hammock, Yacht Harbour Village, Palm Coast Legacy Resort, por debaixo da Ponte Hammock Dunes, ao longo da trilha de St. Joe’s e da trilha Canopy, pelas Ilhas de  Estates, Waterfront Park e depois virando na área de Grand Haven, onde encerra a sua rota!.

…was the 39th Annual Palm Coast Vacation Boat Parade, with an unprecedented seventy-four boats registered and already considered the largest community boat parade in the state of Florida passing through the Tidelands, Marina Cove, Hammock, Yacht Harbor Village, Palm Coast Legacy Resort, underneath the Hammock Dunes Bridge, along the St. Joe’s and the Canopy trail, through the Estates Islands, Waterfront Park and then turning in the Grand Haven area, where its route ends!.

…é uma experiência única que celebra a temporada de Festas do Natal, bem ao estilo da Flórida, porque num espaço de aproximadamente duas milhas de ambos os lados, podemos assistir ao desfile de uma flotilha de barcos brilhantemente decorados, onde o barco principal do desfile deste ano, foi sem qualquer dúvida o “SunShine”, um Viking de 15 metros de largura, que iluminava o Intracoastal Waterway,  anunciando o Natal com imagens e música ao estlo desta época festiva, para que todos podessem experimentar a magia e a tradição de um evento memorável!.

…um pouco fora do contexto e como já por algumas vezes mencionámos, ao assistir a este desfile de barcos bonitos, (alguns eram iates de luxo, que devem de ser dispendiosos no seu consumo e manutenção) e brilhantemente decorados, sentimos alguma alegria com estas manifestações em época de Natal, no entanto, também nos lembramos que ainda existe uma grande parte da população mundial que sobrevive com menos de US $1,90 por dia, e claro, ameaça destruir muitos anos de progresso na luta contra a pobreza ou as desigualdades, pondo em risco o futuro de uma ou mais gerações, principalmente nas crianças!. 

…a little out of context and as we have mentioned a few times, watching this parade of beautiful boats (some were luxury yachts, which must be expensive to consume and maintain) and brilliantly decorated, we felt some joy with these demonstrations at Christmas time, however, we are also reminded that there is still a large part of the world’s population that survives on less than US $1.90 a day, and of course, threatens to destroy many years of progress in the fight against poverty or inequalities , endangering the future of one or more generations, especially children!.

…foi uma tempestade, um ataque de corsários (vulgo “piratas”) britânicos e a má sorte de um cientista que fizeram parte de uma cadeia de eventos que fez com que os USA não adoptassem o Sistema Métrico Decimal!.

…há aproximadamente cinco décadas, quando chegámos a este continente, uma das muitas outras dificuldades de adaptação foi o sistema de medir a distância ou a quantidade de liquidos e peso daquilo que se queria adequir!. Em outras palavras começámos a medir a distância em milhas, a comprar a gasolina por galão e os hamburgueres por um quarto de libras, ou seja, eram milhas, galões e libras, em vez de quilómetros, litros e quilos!.

No entanto, uma tremenda tempestade tirou o navio de Dombey da sua rota, levando-o para o mar do Caribe, colocando-o nas garras dos tais “corsários” britânicos!.

Para ser-mos mais exactos, esses “corsários” britânicos eram na realidade “piratas”, basicamente criminosos aquáticos, tacitamente apoiados pelo governo britânico e tinham por tarefa atacar navios inimigos!. Assim, levaram Joseph Dombey como prisioneiro para a ilha de Montserrat, na esperança de obter um resgate por ele!. Infelizmente para os ‘piratas”, e também para Dombey, ele morreu em cativeiro!.

…mas continuando com a história e voltando um pouco atrás, logo após a sua captura, saquearam todo o seu equipamento tal como o restante conteúdo do seu navio e tudo foi leiloado, como era uso normal naquela época!. No entanto, a França enviou um segundo emissário para promover o sistema métrico, mas quando a substituição chegou, os USA tinham um novo secretário de Estado que, aparentemente não se importava muito com medições!. E assim, à medida que o resto do mundo adotava o sistema métrico, os USA continuaram a lidar com as unidades imperiais herdadas dos britânicos!.

…but continuing with the story and going back a little, soon after his capture, all his equipment was looted as well as the rest of his ship’s contents and everything was auctioned, as was normal use at that time!. Já com alguma idade, escapou de uma prisão espanhola e voltou para França, para encontrar o seu país no auge da revolução e vários dos seus amigos aristocratas na fila para a guilhotina!.

Porquê?. Porque “boas colheitas”, quer dizer tudo!. Alguma fartura que as colheitas nos deram, paz, saúde ou amor entre as pessoas, entre outras coisas!.

Alguns “peregrinos”, foram à praia para ver se encontravam casas ou pessoas, mas só viram alguns índios, que fugiram deles!. No entanto, encontraram algumas cabanas de índios e um pouco de milho enterrados em buracos no chão”!. Tristes e desapontados voltaram para o navio “Mayflower”, repetindo outros desembarques por três vezez em diferentes lugares até que encontraram um lugar bonito para morar, onde havia “campos e pequenos riachos”!. Ali, finalmente todos os“peregrinos” desembarcaram do navio num local agora chamado de Plymouth Rock”!.

…pronto, este, além de poder estar mais uma vez junto da família, é o motivo porque viajámos de longa distância, tal como uns “perigrinos”, vindo ver os ninhos que no norte e nesta época do ano estão vazios, ouvindo em alguns momentos simplesmente o canto das codornizes entre os feixes de palha ou em campos que foram de colheitas, agora esperando de novo a primavera, neste dia de Acção de Graças que, indo do leste para oeste, do norte para sul, todos viajam para se encontrar com a família, abraçarem-se, sentarem-se à volta de uma mesa, saborearem o cardápio, trazendo de volta o passado, dividindo entre si um perú assado, agradecendo ao Criador, dando assim as boas-vindas a uma colheita que para nós até foi feliz, porque continuamos por cá!.

…éramos onze, sentados em redor de uma grande mesa, ouvindo  histórias uns dos outros, algumas engraçadas, principalmente das crianças, como por exemplo, “o perú que a avó confeccionou, e era tão grande que nem cabia no forno, estava mesmo bom, yum… yum”!. Enfim foi dia divertido que vai ficar no nosso pensamento para o resto da nossa vida!.

…there were eleven of us, sitting around a large table, listening to each other’s stories, some of them funny, mainly from the children, such as, for example, “the turkey that grandma cooked, and it was so big that it couldn’t even fit in the oven, it was really good , yum… yum”!.
