…”Quarta Expedição ao Wild West”!. (Dia 4) …”Fourth Expedition to the Wild West”!. (Day 4)

…still early in the morning, now in the state of Colorado, we were traveling on the Highway #70 heading west, which was almost deserted, its traffic slowly increased, already seeing itself in the distance, towards the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, in the valley of the South Platte river, right there on the western edge of the High Plains, the most populous city in the state of Colorado, which goes by the name of Denver!.

…Denver, which due to its proximity to the mountains, many travelers coming from the east, observe that the city is a real gateway to the aforementioned mountains and…, not its main attraction, as many believe!. We, with some difficulty, guided by the GPS on our dedicated wife Isaura’s phone, moved forward and…, surprise, because almost without noticing it, we were on Avenue 16 in the city!. This area is home to some of the most popular places to visit in the city, such as Denver Union Station or the Lower Downtown historic district!.

…this avenue is almost like a historic neighborhood in the city of Denver!. It’s full of old warehouses, which now house many breweries, sports bars, restaurants or cafes, and while we’re here, we can still buy some “cowboy boots or pants”, or even a western shirt with snap buttons, in the store where they were invented!.

…it is also a “street food” area, where you can enjoy a craft beer at Wynkoop Brewing Company, Denver’s first brewery, opened by John Hickenlooper, who among other positions, was a US senator, because Denver is also famous for its craft beer, and we are told that it produces more beer than any other city in the USA!.

…and the adventure continued, now traveling south on highway 25, just before the city of Colorado Springs, where we entered state highway 24 that would take us to an area now known as Garden of the Gods and which was initially called Red Rock Corral by European emigrants, who in August 1859, helped found the city of Colorado City, and who explored this place!.

…here, we wind our way through all these red garden rocks that must have been created millions of years ago, perhaps during an event of geological turbulence of every conceivable and inconceivable shape and size, all bright red, all motionless and silent, with a strange appearance of having been stopped and held back, perhaps at the climax of some supernatural catastrophe!.

…archaeological evidence shows that prehistoric people visited what is now called the Garden of the Gods around 1330 BC. Around 250 BC, Native Americans camped in the park, believing they were attracted to the wildlife and plants in the area and used ledges created by the rocks for shelter!. Many native peoples have reported a connection to the Garden of the Gods, such as the Apache, Cheyenne, Comanche, Kiowa, Lakota, Pawnee, Shoshone, and Ute peoples!.

…until we reached the dangerous “Pikes Peak Highway” in Colorado, which is one of the most stunning and exciting mountain driving adventures in the USA!. Surrounded by rugged slopes, dramatic clouds and magnificent alpine scenery, this winding road offers unforgettable views at almost every turn!

…and the higher we traveled, the smaller the world below seemed, creating a wonderful feeling of driving above the clouds!. The journey became increasingly challenging as the winding road climbed towards the summit where we encountered steep inclines, hairpin bends and exposed sections that could make even seasoned travelers like us a little nervous!.

…looking down from the road revealed deep valleys and huge mountain sides, while the vehicles below looked tiny against the vast Colorado landscape!. Weather conditions at Pikes Peak could change surprisingly quickly, adding another level of excitement and danger, where a clear, peaceful afternoon could suddenly become cloudy, cold or foggy at higher elevations!

…when the clouds started to cross the road, visibility could quickly decrease, so careful driving and full attention were essential throughout the trip, because despite its intimidating curves and the steep edges of those mountains, the road was full of extraordinary natural beauty, where the green forests gradually disappear as the road reaches the rocky alpine zone, where scattered rocks and open slopes dominate the landscape!.

…each bend offered a new perspective, making us want to pause and admire the breathtaking surroundings. In short, driving the Pikes Peak Highway is much more than a road trip, it’s an adventure full of beauty, wonder, excitement and fear! The dramatic climb, unpredictable weather and magnificent panoramic views created memories that will linger long after the end of this wonderfully beautiful and genuinely scary trip, making it one of the most unforgettable mountain roads in the USA!.

…continuing our route, almost late in the afternoon, we visited Red Rocks Park and Amphitheater, which is carved into imposing red rock monuments, and is one of the most renowned concert venues in the world and has hosted everyone from the Beatles to Bruce Springsteen!. Listening to a concert here is on every true music fan’s “bucket list”!

…there was a concert on the day we visited and traffic was constant with people heading in groups to the top of the mountain as the location of this park offers stunning views of red rock formations, hiking trails and a unique amphitheater that stands out for its incredible acoustics, magical atmosphere and the unforgettable experience of being able to attend a concert in this iconic location!.

…we spent the night, already traveling west, at any exit from highway 70, in an RV park, at the top of the Rocky Mountains, a few miles from the city of Denver!.
